It helps businesses of every size market better, quote clearer‌ and book more! The developers of this product still run their own carpet cleaning company and, with over twenty five years in the industry, they know the challenges of running a successful business. That's why they developed this software‌ to make it systemised and easier.
They've grown and streamlined their own carpet cleaning business into a multi-van operation with admin staff by using the marketing tools built into the software. Other carpet cleaners could see what a difference it had made to the developers' carpet cleaning business (especially in terms of an increase in their return on advertising spend and reduced administration) and, after repeated requests from those cleaners, in 2006 a decision was made to further develop the software and make it available to others within the same industry. Now, with hundreds of users, there is an edition to suit every size of business, from owner/operators through to multi-van operations with admin office support staff. So, if you want to free up time by reducing and streamlining your administration, and want more money by marketing more effectively, this could be the solution for you. The charity is currently working with underprivileged children to teach them the benefits of learning to create things themselves, using the materials around them, and how satisfying this can be. John has recently created his own loom and is using it to weave carpet utilising traditional weaving methods. This project has now become an integral part of his current work with Kirsty's Kids. At the Carnival this year John will be displaying his loom, so if you are interested in learning how to hand-knot your own rugs with your own handmade loom (and John's current work with Kirsty's Kids), pop along to their stand and have a chat. The company was formed using experience gained in the Galway region of Ireland by Terry with his previous company, Airc Flooring, who specialised in the sales, fitting and finishing of wooden flooring. The decision to go floor sanding only was made when the benefits of dust free machinery became obvious and by marketing this idea the company grew to thirteen outlets across Ireland. In 2011 Ultimate Floor Sanding entered the UK market using an Affiliate network strategy, recruiting and training existing floor maintenance experts in floor sanding and then going on to promote and support them with the aid of a leading German Continued on next page

A guide to customer complaints (part seven) NCCA Standards and Fair Trading Officer, Lewis Scroby, continues his series on dealing with customer complaints. This month's article focuses on unavoidable complaints and NCCA procedure.
F
ollowing the previous focus on surveying and inspecting items to identify potential issues, it should be acknowledged that some problems are destined to arise regardless of how much or how well you prepare. As I'm sure you all know, there can be several phenomena encountered during and after the cleaning of even the most standard carpets and soft furnishings. Patchiness, distortion and many other types of damage have been reported to the NCCA and sometimes there appears to be absolutely no explanation as to how or why it has occurred. In these situations it is important to understand the position that you are in. You may not specifically be responsible for the issue, but you certainly still need to address the matter and ensure the customer is made aware. Several members have put themselves in difficult situations by not accepting responsibility for an unexpected occurrence during or following cleaning. We obviously appreciate that unexplained damage and other phenomena can arise without any fault on the part of the technician or cleaning process. Unfortunately, however, these are a risk of the job. You may not have to accept liability, but you do still need to accept responsibility to either resolve the issue or appease the customer. This is the main reason the Association insists all our members have comprehensive insurance cover. We try to assist all members to become the best cleaner they can be, but also accept that there are some things you can't account for. These unexpected situations can be the most difficult to accept and put right, but the best cleaners will deal with problems as well as they deal with carpets. NCCA Chief Executive and Technical Director, Paul Pearce, has given up a lot of free time (like many former Directors, including John Claydon and Robert Olifent, along with current members of the Board) to assist members in dealing with complaints. Paul is the first point of contact within the Association for
Lewis Scroby
technical advice and has helped many companies address, solve and avoid issues with customers. It is a duty of the Association to assist both members of the NCCA and members of the public when a dispute arises. Often, if there is a complaint from a customer, members will respond accordingly and quickly to resolve the matter. Sometimes, however, these situations escalate and a formal complaint is made to the NCCA. Using the advice in previous articles, many complaints can be avoided or settled before they become disputes but, if the two parties cannot agree, the Association is available to arbitrate. The complaint procedure that is usually followed is to request both parties provide a full written report on the situation. This is then reviewed in the office and at least one of the NCCA Directors is involved to provide advice. If further information is required, either, or both, parties are consulted and the Association gathers as much information as possible before proceeding with an investigation. Once the issues have all been identified it is important for us to determine whether there was any fault or negligence on the part of the member. If so, we will hold them responsible to resolve the matter to the satisfaction of the customer (within reason obviously); if not, however, we will inform the customer of our position and confirm that we are unable to uphold the complaint. In some situations it is unfortunately very difficult to determine whether the member is responsible. In these cases we usually try to assist in a negotiation to resolve the matter. Though we always attempt to assist in reaching a reasonable conclusion, sometimes neither party can agree and the matter is taken out of our hands. Disputes almost always become more problematic when parties cannot agree and complaints are harder and harder to resolve as communication breaks down. Remaining calm and professional in these situations (even when a customer is not) is vital in ensuring the complaint does not escalate. Next month the series will continue with resolving complaints and the various outcomes.

Underfoot and overlooked, cleaning the Cragside carpet Part three - Product testing
Glyn Charnock
In February this year, the National Trust Textile Conservation Studio in Norfolk collected a 19th Century Templetons chenille dining room carpet (from Cragside House in Northumberland) for conservation. The carpet first needed to be cleaned in order to avoid additional damage and, following our successful tour of the Conservation Studio last year, NCCA Director Glyn Charnock was personally asked if he could undertake the cleaning work to be done. In June we featured the first in a series of articles on Glyn's time spent cleaning this delicate and historic carpet. This month we continue with investigation into the cleaning solutions to be used... and the carpet finally arrives. So, after almost a day of investigating cleaning methods, we worked out a system and it was time to look at which products were going to be most effective. I have quite a range of products in my armoury, as I like to have different options for different situations. I regularly use products from all the major manufacturers and I test products as I find out about them, looking for something more effective, easier to use or safer, so I was confident I would have the right product in my van for cleaning the Cragside carpet. Obviously some of my products were not suitable, such as those with a higher pH, but I was sure there were at least three or four possible options. The conservators also have a range of products they regularly use, so we decided to pick what we

each thought would be most effective and test them side by side using the methods we had already worked out. I had settled on a Woolsafe approved Oriental rug product from one of the NCCA corporate member suppliers. The conservators' product was a non-ionic surfactant (bought direct from the manufacturer - a large multinational chemical company) mixed with a suspension agent. I follow the supplier's instructions regarding the dilution rates for products. The conservators take a more rigorous approach, testing each batch of surfactant to work out its critical mycelle concentration (CMC), as this can vary from batch to batch. They then use the product at three to five times CMC, as this is the most effective dilution requiring least rinsing to remove excess product. The test carpet was a piece of old wool Axminster which had been laid in my Father's garage for about ten years, so was very heavily soiled. My Oriental rug shampoo did produce a slightly better visual result than the conservators' product, but they checked the contents and it was unfortunately rejected. I had a look through my van and came up with a couple of other suggestions, but these were also not considered suitable. Surprised at the rejection of all my preferred products, I asked what criteria the conservators use and discovered how strict they are. Obviously no Cationic surfactants or oxidising or reducing agents were allowed but, because they are looking to preserve items for at least the next fifty years, and the longer term effects of many cleaning agent

there and, much to my surprise, asked me to undertake the cleaning for them. This raised the problem of how to price the job. We agreed on a day rate, as we didn't have a clue how long it would take. There was a schedule in place for the delivery of the carpet, so I booked four days in my diary, as a guess, and the waiting began. Two of the conservators went to Cragside house to supervise the lifting and packing of the carpet ready for transport, which was to take two weeks. Due to its size and delicate condition, turning it over to roll it face out was a major undertaking. They had to find a roller long and stiff enough to support the carpet and work out a route to get it out of the house - no mean feat as, once rolled, it was over six metres long and almost a metre in diameter. Along with the roller and packing materials it took eight people to safely lift and manhandle. The process of packing the carpet for transport revealed some unexpected secrets. Cragside was the first house in the UK to have electricity installed, and this runs off a generator driven by a water wheel. When the carpet was lifted, some electrical sockets were discovered in the floor under the carpet which no one knew about and, of more concern to the conservators, there was a large water stain on the underside of the carpet which could indicate weaker areas in the backing. The face of the carpet was carefully vacuumed prior to turning over and it was then rolled with layers of acid free tissue, to protect the surface of the carpet, and sheets of Kapoc padding to help prevent crushing of the pile and other damage. Finally, wrapped in bubble wrap, it was ready for transport. (Next month, the clean finally starts)
