Are your clients insured? As a professional carpet cleaner, you are often called upon to remove specific stains from carpets and fabrics. As you know, total success cannot be guaranteed. However, although most clients don't realise it, they already have the perfect protection in the form of their Home Contents Insurance policy. Providing that the cover includes accidental damage, most policies will cover the cost of remedial treatment or replacement, subject to terms and conditions, thereby removing a risk element should a 'kill or cure' course of action be taken (with the insurers consent). It's best to discuss this with your client at the time of the initial enquiry, giving them time to speak to their insurers. You should still obtain a
New Health and Safety guidance for cleaning operatives The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has published new guidance on how cleaning operatives can manage musculoskeletal disorders. Cleaning work is demanding and labourintensive. Many tasks involve using cleaning machines, and heavy manual work, and cleaners are often required to work in awkward postures for long periods (which may lead to long-term damage). According to the guidance, Musculoskeletal disorders (muscular aches, pains and discomfort) are the most common work-related ill health/injury reported by cleaning operatives. If you haven’t, it’s not too late, just go to: and fill in the registration form at the bottom of the page, or phone Katie, Nicky or Lewis at the office on: 0116 271 9550. The event is being held on Saturday September 10th and celebrates the opportunities that this wonderful industry of ours has to offer. Some of the major industry manufacturers and suppliers will be attending, allowing you to see different solutions and developments all under one roof, as well as gain expert advice. There is also going to be a seminar and demonstration programme running throughout the day, designed to help you grow your business and update your skills. To see exactly what’s on offer, turn to the centre-page guide in Newslink this month. Just remember, the Carnival is the only FREE to attend annual showcase for our industry and that should make the decision to come along a ‘nobrainer’. The Carpet Cleaners Carnival is hosted by the NCCA and a lot of time and effort is devoted by the Directors and office staff to organise this annual event solely for your benefit. In addition to the exhibitors and seminars it provides you the opportunity to network with others in the industry and gain useful tips or contacts that can help you in the day-to-day running of your business.

Cleaning for health
Paul Pearce
Cleaning should never be strictly for appearance. It should also improve the IAQ (indoor air quality) of the property you are working on and without danger to the occupants of the building. So, what should you be doing to improve IAQ? The World Health Organisation's definition of cleaning includes 'the physical removal and proper disposal of soils and pollutants from the building'. To ensure this you will need to: ŸMaximise the extraction of pollutants from the building if 'healthy' cleaning is to be accomplished; otherwise dirt may be less visible, but still present, still doing its damage. ŸMinimise chemical residue - Most agents used in fabric cleaning are quite safe, but some leave residues that cause rapid re-soiling. ŸMinimise particle residue - Particles left behind after cleaning can become airborne and result in respiratory irritation. ŸMinimise moisture residue - Prolonged drying can result in rapid re-soiling and mould growth that may trigger allergies and asthma attacks. ŸMinimise human exposure to contaminants,
cleaning chemicals and cleaning residues. Both during and after cleaning make sure that neither you nor your customers are exposed to any potentially hazardous material. REMEMBER: Clean for health first and for appearance second. Fortunately when you clean for health, you also get outstanding appearance. But it doesn't necessarily follow that better appearance produces a healthy environment.

t doesn't matter whether you are an owner/operator or a multi-employee company, to get a permit to work in a commercial building you need to know about the procedures of supplying a risk assessment, a method statement and a COSHH assessment. If you are not being asked for this information, then the owner or manager of the business is not carrying out due diligence or duty of care to their employees or visitors. Even if you only do domestic cleaning, you will still have obligations when it comes to health and safety. You may not have to present the paperwork that is required for commercial cleaning, but it is still your responsibility to provide a safe working environment for the occupants of the building you are working in. You will also have an obligation to yourself and any employees you may have when it comes to health and safety. Are you up to date with manual handling or lone working for instance? Well, you can learn all this and more on the Health and Safety course I am running on 26th October. Health and Safety laws apply to all businesses no matter how small, even the selfemployed. The laws are there to prevent people from being harmed at work and to provide a

satisfactory working environment. They are also there to protect the public from workplace dangers. This course will take you through several policy and assessment documents, which are all on Microsoft Word templates and can be completed as required. I will walk you through step-by-step procedures to create your own documents. Many of these can be completed during the course so, if you have them, please bring your own laptops. You will be able to leave the course having started to implement your company's health and safety policy. The topics to be covered on the course include: ŸThe Law ŸManual Handling, ŸLone Working ŸEmergency Plans & Reporting Accidents ŸWork Environment Guidelines ŸSlips & Trips ŸFirst Aid Guidelines ŸThe importance of Training & Induction ŸRisk Assessment (inc. template on CD) ŸMethod Statement (inc. template on CD) ŸHealth & Safety Policy (inc. template on CD) ŸCOSHH Assessment (inc. template on CD) Ÿ30 Health & Safety PDF documents on the CD So, if you would like to join me on this course, then please go to: www.ncca.co.uk/training.php where you can either download a booking form or book online, or ring the NCCA office on 0116 271 9550. I look forward to seeing you there.

Respiratory sensitisation Paul Pearce
A
common respiratory problem is work related asthma, caused by breathing in substances called respiratory sensitisers. Approximately 1500 cases of staff absence are reported each year due to this problem, costing an employer hundreds of pounds. So, what exactly are respiratory sensitisers? Well, they are any substance which can trigger an allergic reaction when breathed in. Unfortunately once someone has this problem ANY exposure (no matter how small) can cause a reaction, and continued exposure can result in long-term lung damage. Often a person will not feel the effects of breathing in respiratory sensitisers straight away. In fact it can take months, or even years, of breathing in these substances before the effect is noticed. An employee may not be affected until well after their employment with you has ceased and so it is not always possible to associate the problem with the job. So, how can you avoid the problem and protect you and your staff? Well, it is easy to use the proper mask for the job. There is no point in issuing dust masks when a full-face respiratory charcoal mask is required. Nowadays there is no excuse for not using this equipment. More and more we are seeing cases of compensation claims being made well after the incident took place. Make sure this doesn’t happen to you!

Out and about... again

hen you reach a certain age it is said that you become invisible. I previously never really gave this much thought, but recently I've found that there appears to be an element of truth in this statement. I've done a few of these 'out and about' articles now and, so far, my penchant for wandering around the home furnishing departments of various stores (and taking photographs) has attracted no attention whatsoever. I really must be invisible‌ how exciting! I never tire of browsing around these stores and it's never a waste of time as there is always something new to see. So‌ what did I find this time? Well, I am amazed at the wide variety of rug styles around at the moment, most of which are really quite appealing. The first example is of a very attractive rug with a 100% Polyester pile (see top pic above). From a cleaning point of view this should be pretty straightforward. On reading the label on the back of the rug I found
some useful basic recommendations. One of the warnings... 'This rug contains Latex' was surprising, then again perhaps not. Nearby was one of the popular 100% Wool rugs (see pic directly above), another straightforward clean with just the differing pile heights to consider when extracting moisture. This one had a more detailed message about Latex on the label. It said 'Latex is used on the back of this rug. Please do not leave babies or young children unsupervised on this rug'. Although it didn't say it in so many words, I am presuming this warning is in reference to possible off-gassing from the Latex.
An attractive loop pile rug (see first pic below) caught my eye while I was out and about this time, so out came the camera for a quick shot. Labelled as a 'Chunky Jute' I can see the appeal... is that a cotton weft thread I see in there? This could obviously be a tricky one to clean as it contains all vegetable fibres. It would definitely need some consideration. In the same rack was this little beauty (see second pic below). As you can see it is very similar
on show (see top pic below), very similar to some of the Wool fabrics I have highlighted in previous articles. These shouldn't cause any problems when cleaning, unless you do something silly of course. My all-time favourite (I am joking) was this Polyester Shag Pile rug (see second pic below). Those of you who remember the Shag Pile carpets of yesteryear, with tufts 2.5 to 3 inches long, will remember what a nightmare they were
to the Chunky Jute, but I have a feeling that the main loop pile was Polyester. I can't be more certain as‌ a) There was no label, and b) I didn't have my lighter to carry out a burn test (At this point I do have to say that I am NOT encouraging NCCA members to do a burn test in the middle of a home furnishings department, however tempting it might be!). There were also several Wool flatweave style rugs
to clean. Teasing out the matted strands before cleaning seemed to take forever. And once they were cleaned, setting the long pile into some sort of order was a must! When combing out the fibres you can often see the backing grinning through so, if you end up working on one of these, just watch out for allowing too much moisture to penetrate. I think it's about time for a coffee and a sticky bun now. Have fun!

ULTIMATE FLOOR CARE UK LTD Ultimate Floor Care was formed in Ireland in 2007 by Terry Guilford, on the back of his experience with a previous company who specialised in the sales, fitting and finishing of wooden flooring. The decision to go floor sanding only was made when the benefits of dust free machinery became obvious, and by marketing this idea the company grew to thirteen outlets across Ireland. In 2011 Ultimate Floor Care entered the UK market using an Affiliate network strategy, recruiting and training existing floor maintenance experts in floor sanding and then going on to promote and support them with the aid of a leading German supplier of machines and floor finishing products. Their UK operation is now larger than the Irish one, but they still have territories available and are keen to meet anyone who thinks they may like to add floor sanding to their existing business. BUILDING RELATIONSHIPS TO GAIN REFERRALS FOR LIFE - DUNCAN WEBSTER (1PCS Web Design/SEO and BNI Executive Director for Northamptonshire and Leicestershire) Duncan Webster started out as a Lifeguard and then joined the RAF and served as a Medic for twelve years. He had an active part in the Gulf war and is a proud holder of the 'Liberation of Kuwait' medal. Within seven years he had progressed up the ranks to Director of Operations in a data processing bureau and was working with companies such as Barclays, World Vision, Global One, Texas Instruments, SAS Airlines and Swiss Air. He finally left two years later to set up his own web design agency, 1PCS. It was at this point that Duncan joined BNI as a member. Within the first two years of his membership he was awarded eighteen ‘Notable Networker’ certificates and took over one hundred and forty visitors to his chapter. He then became a Director Consultant, Area Director and then Executive Director for the Northamptonshire and Leicestershire region. Duncan was very passionate about helping people as a Medic in the RAF and now, as a BNI Director, is equally passionate about helping other businesses.

straightaway in your own business. Forty five minutes in, this seminar will save you HOURS each and every week from then on! You'd be mad to miss this one because you're 'too busy'! During his seminar Adam will take you through some of the issues you need to consider to successfully undertake this work and, ultimately, keep your customers happy. mainly with 'man and van' trades such as plumbers, electricians, joiners and carpet cleaners, he understands what service industries need in a website and how they need to project the right image to their potential clients. Not only that, he understands what's needed to get your site onto the first page of Google QUICKLY. With a proven track record of helping small businesses he's going to share with you the ten essential things your website MUST have, not only to look good, but to rank well on Google. COLOUR REPAIR (AND THE IMPORTANCE OF TRAINING TO YOUR BUSINESS) - JULIE ROBERTS (Modular Training Solutions) For over twenty years Julie Roberts worked for a major textile, hard floor and restoration chemical manufacturer, offering full time technical and sales support plus hands-on training to industry professionals throughout Europe. She has worked with IICRC, NCCA, CHSA, TACCA, is a Woolsafe Trainer and educated to degree level at York St John University. Julie is very well known in the industry and, by popular request, will be running a seminar at the CCC this year on Colour Repair (and the importance of training to your business). This will be both a theory and practical hands-on experience, as are most of Julie's training courses. Julie set up Modular Training Solutions earlier this year when she realised that training is where her heart is. She is keen to impart her knowledge to help keep the industry improving and to help those who work in it gain confidence in the services they offer. SAVE YOUR REPUTATION - GLYN CHARNOCK (Chameleon Cleaning) These days, with social media and internet reviews, your reputation is only as good as your last job. If your client isn't happy they can very quickly destroy the reputation you have spent
CCC years building. So, how do you make sure every client is delighted with your work? Glyn Charnock is the Training Director for the NCCA and helps 'man' the NCCA Technical Helpline, answering questions from members, non-member cleaners, the public and the trade, as well as dealing with complaints from consumers. One of the biggest reasons for both complaints and calls to the Technical Helpline is the failure to perform a thorough pre-clean survey. A detailed written survey will avoid the majority of potential problems and align clients' expectations with the likely outcome of the clean. Glyn will be discussing the best way to perform a pre-clean survey, with example forms to help you get it right and protect your reputation. COLLOIDAL CLEANING: AN UNDERSTANDING OF HOW THE PRODUCTS WORK AND THEIR BENEFITS IN CLEANING TODAY - GARY WEBBER (Ioniclean Solutions) Gary has run his own successful flooring and soft furnishing cleaning business for nineteen years. A few years ago he decided to change the chemical products he was using and, after extensive trials and testing, he switched to working with the Oleonix Solutions product range. Aware of the growing demand for these products and their excellent results, Gary then approached Oleonix Solutions about becoming a distributor. He now also runs Ioniclean Solutions, a distributorship of Oleonix Solutions and Concept Microfibre products, supplying products and providing training to a broad range of cleaning businesses. At the 2016 CCC Gary is going to talk about (and demonstrate) the effectiveness and application of Colloidal products, their affinity with microfibre and their green credentials.

What causes carpet buckling and rippling?
NCCA Library
H
ave you ever had a client who has wrinkling, rippling or buckling on their carpet and has questioned you on how it got there? Well, there are several reasons why this can occur‌. 1) Improper installation A common cause of carpet buckling is poor installation. If the carpet was not properly stretchedin during the fitting process, this could be a contributory factor. A tool called a power-stretcher should be used for the installation of large areas of carpeting. Unfortunately, a common shortcut adopted by some fitters is to use a knee-kicker instead. Using just a knee-kicker is much faster and will usually create enough tension to at least get the carpeting to lay flat. However, although the carpet may look great initially, long-term it could be prone to buckling. The temperature and humidity on the day of the installation may also be a contributory factor. If the carpet is installed in an area where the conditions are significantly different to where it was previously stored (for example, the carpet was stored in an unheated warehouse and is being installed in a heated home), it should be allowed to acclimatise prior to installation to reduce the possibility of buckling.
newslink
page 28
2) Incorrect underlay Sometimes carpet rippling will occur because the underlay is not dense enough to adequately support the carpet. This can allow too much flexibility, causing it to buckle. Always advise your customers to discuss this with their retailer when purchasing their carpet. 3) Humidity Buckling can occur when indoor humidity rises, for example when your client is doing the washing or cooking. What's actually happening is that latex materials used in the backing of the carpet are absorbing moisture. This causes the latex to expand, resulting in buckling if there is not sufficient tension on the carpet. Prominent ripples will appear within the carpet when humidity is high and then disappear when the
humidity then returns to normal. For the same reasons, moisture created during a carpet cleaning process can also cause buckling. However, the good news is that once the carpet is fully dry the ripples will usually settle down again. 4) Delamination Delamination occurs when the latex materials, used in the backing of the carpet, break down. This can cause the secondary backing to detach from the primary backing, resulting in a buckling and rippling effect on the carpet's surface. This will occur if the latex is too sparse and/or too hard/brittle (often due to a defect in its mixing or application during the manufacturing process).

Mmmmmm... carpet fibres are so tasty!
N
CCA member Gary North, of North Star in Kent, recently took a call from a customer about damage caused to his carpet by his pet hamster Erica. Apparently Erica had taken great delight in munching two big holes in the customer's carpet whilst he was cooking dinner. Her pouches were so swollen with fibres that he'd had to intervene to get her to release them so that she didn't choke!
Once little Erica's life was saved it was then time to look at saving the customer’s floor covering. Fortunately, Gary was able to repair the damage by using spare carpet to fill the holes and then blending the edges with the existing carpet. The results were much better than the customer expected and he was full of praise for the work that Gary had done (below are pictures of the damage, the end result and, of course, little Erica).
The two holes the size of a 2-pound coin

Help to stamp out logo misuse The NCCA logo and the name NATIONAL CARPET CLEANERS ASSOCIATION are officially registered trademarks. We need your help to ensure that only bone fide members of the Association use the coveted name and logo and to safeguard our good name from use by unscrupulous individuals or companies. If you become aware of an individual or company using our name and/or logo, and you have reason to believe that they are not members of the NCCA, please send us any evidence you can, together with any other information that might help us when we take a particular case to Trading Standards. We accept as evidence the appearance of our name or logo on websites or any
printed material. In the case of official publications we would need to know the date and name of the journal/directory in which misuse occurred. It is in everyone's interest to help us stamp out the illegal use of our name and logo, so please be vigilant. We assure you that, with the right evidence, we will press Trading Standards to prosecute offenders. One trader has already been successfully prosecuted for making a false statement by means of a leaflet bearing the NCCA logo. His County Council Trading Standards brought the prosecution and the company was fined and ordered to pay costs towards the prosecution. The company was further ordered to pay compensation to an aggrieved customer.
Customer advice on protective treatments
NCCA Library
C
ustomers are often under the misconception that carpet protectors don't work, simply because their expectations are too high. Of course, no protection treatment is bulletproof against stains, but what it CAN do is give the owner of the treated item time to deal with a spillage before it becomes a stain. They certainly work well within the constraints laid down by the manufacturers as a 'soil and stain resist' product (the key word here is 'resist')… providing, of course, that the treatment has been applied correctly in the first place. In order to overcome the misconceptions regarding carpet protectors, it is a good idea to provide your customer with a guide which will inform them how to get the best possible performance from their stain resist treatment. On this guide you should advise your customer to… ŸAllow 24 hours of cure time following the application of the protector prior to resuming full usage of the carpet.
newslink
page 32
ŸVacuum the carpet regularly to
remove the gritty soiling which, if left, will rub against the carpet fibres and scratch the protector. ŸBlot up spills immediately when they happen. Whilst the protector will protect the carpet fibres, spills that work their way to the carpet backing are more difficult to remove and may wick back to the surface over time. ŸAvoid vigorous agitation of the affected area, and/or the application of household stain removers, when removing the spillage. These actions will damage the protector and stop it from working. ŸSeek professional assistance if the spillage has not removed in a timely manner and has now become a stain.
ŸBe aware that, after a certain amount of time,
the carpet protector will naturally start to wear off in heavy-use areas. Once your customer knows how to care for their treated carpet, the performance of the protector will be improved and they are much more likely to be pleased with the results.
