Why carpet is an excellent choice of flooring for your customers
H
ave you ever visited a customer who is toying with the idea throwing away their carpets and replacing them all with hard flooring? One of the reasons for this could be that they are concerned about the maintenance aspect of carpet. But do they know that hard flooring also Carpet adds beauty and style requires regular attention and upkeep to keep it looking good? It may also be that they have health concerns. It also has very good thermal insulating properties, efficiently retaining heat within its pile and backing material. 4) It provides a non-slip cushioned surface Carpet provides a cushioning effect and has excellent orthopedic properties. It also offers better traction than most It provides comfort and warmth other flooring options, reducing slips and falls. And, if falls do occur, the softer surface reduces their impact - an important consideration if your customer has small children or elderly people in their home. 5) It has very efficient sound reduction properties Carpet can make a big difference to the acoustics in a building by absorbing and dampening sounds. It creates a sound barrier between floors, reduces the noise from foot traffic on stairways, absorbs airborne sounds (such as talking) and even lessens noise transmission to adjoining neighbours. 6) It improves indoor air quality It is a common misconception that carpet is a poor choice of floor covering for maintaining good air quality, and that people who suffer from asthma and allergies should avoid having carpet in their home. In fact, the opposite is true. Although people might not normally associate carpet with
improved indoor air quality, it does actually have a very positive effect. Gravity causes common household particles, such as dust, pollen and pet and insect dander, to fall to the floor. Carpet fibres very efficiently trap these particles, reducing their circulation in the air, holding them until they can be properly removed through vacuuming and professional cleaning (providing these tasks are undertaken regularly of course). 7) It is a relatively low emitter of VOCs VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds) can contribute to what is known as 'sick building syndrome', causing occupants to experience a host of health problems (including sore throats, coughs and allergic symptoms). Carpet has lower VOC emissions than many other common flooring choices. In fact, it's one of the lowest emitting products used in new construction and renovation. Once they are in receipt of all the facts, you will find that your customer will be more inclined to keep their carpets (at least in some rooms) and will be much less likely to think that removing their carpets is the answer to all their flooring 'problems'. Potential problems when cleaning upholstery
Paul Pearce
W
e are all aware that there are potential problems arising from the cleaning of upholstery, especially if you use a more aggressive method of soil removal. At the same time, however, you will want to obtain optimum cleaning efficiency and so find yourself treading a very thin line. To avoid problems, the very first thing you should do is undertake some expert training so you are able to recognise the fabrics you will be working on. The next thing you should do is purchase some high-grade cleaning solutions and equipment, make sure you understand the products, and then experiment with them somewhere safe. My father always reminded me that 'practice makes perfect' and I truly think that the only way to understand how to clean something is to practice. Lastly you will need to carry out thorough testing, prior to starting the job, to identify any potential pitfalls. In this article I will identify some of the more common issues surrounding upholstery cleaning and how to avoid, or possibly reverse, problem situations.

page 6
Colour run or bleeding Colours which run into each other (bleeding) are a big problem for the upholstery cleaner and best avoided. Once bleeding occurs it is very difficult to correct and will usually result in an unacceptable appearance, which often means that reupholstering is necessary. Bleeding occurs when a fugitive dye from one fibre is loosened and migrates into another colour. Sometimes initial testing will not catch a 'bleeder' because of delayed reaction time. A ten minute period of unassisted drying will usually catch
delayed bleeding if it is going to be a problem; however it is worth remembering that results will sometimes not be fully conclusive until the fabric is completely dry. One of the things you should know is that acid tends to set dyes, while alkaline (especially high alkaline) tends to release dyes and can create colour problems. If you suspect a 'bleeder', always begin testing with the highest pH chemical you intend to use. Apply the solution to a white towel, and clamp the towel onto the coloured area for around ten minutes. Remember to always test in an inconspicuous area, probably the zip end, and make sure you test all of the colours. If you do see some transfer of colour you may need to move to a neutral or even an acid type cleaning solution to prevent problems. If there is no transfer to the towel then usually it is safe to continue. If the fabric continues to release colour then you may need to move to a dry cleaning process using an odourless mineral solvent. This would be rare though. If a bleeding problem does occur you must act quickly. Sometimes it is possible to use the same solution that caused the bleeding or even a strong alkaline chemical with some oxygen bleach to loosen the fugitive dye and flush it out. Set the remaining dyes with an acid solution. Don't use your client's furniture as your test lab though, as my guess is you probably don't need an extra sofa in your living room and the chances are that it wouldn't match your colour scheme anyway.
Fading This condition usually exists before the upholstery cleaner even touches the furniture, but is not visible as it is hidden by the soil. Consequently it will only show up once the cleaning process has taken place. It is important to ask your client questions about the age of the furniture and its history of exposure to sunlight. To convey how fading can occur, use denim as an example. Explain that, just as this particular fabric can fade in contact areas, so can certain upholstery fabrics. You won't really know if there is any fading until you start to clean it unless, of course, there is obvious evidence of sun fade. Fabrics such as cottons and linens, which may have been subjected to a printed dye process, are very susceptible to fading and dye crocking (the transfer of dye through agitation, either wet or dry). For example: red dye rubbing off onto a white skirt. As a piece of fabric begins to soil it is natural for the dyes to begin to break down. Think of the warmth and moisture from your body when sitting for a while, this is enough to move some dyes. Most fibres have a strong enough dye to resist heavy fading even after cleaning. The prints, however, are just surface dyes and they are easily abraded and faded by wear, sunlight and soil. When the cleaning begins, the loosened dyes may come out with the soil you are removing. Spot fading can also be a problem because of the tendency of some fabrics to fade when agitated. Continually trying to remove spots with Continued on next page

localised agitation can cause fading in that area. The sad thing is that once the dye is removed and sitting in your waste tank there is little more that you can do. Deterioration of Fabrics The sun is probably the worst cause of deterioration of fabrics, coupled with wear, moisture (sweat), soiling and age. However, how do you determine when a piece of upholstery is old or past its sell-by-date? There is no written rule to indicate when its life is up, but let's guess this would be when it's around seven to ten years old (especially if it hasn't been maintained or cleaned in that time). That should really start alarm bells ringing! Often your clients don't see, or realise, how soiled their fabrics are because they live with them day in and day out. They don't see the damage that can be hidden under the soil. It's your job to seek it out. My recommendation is that upholstery is cleaned at least every eighteen months to two years. The longer it has gone without cleaning or maintenance, and the older it is, the more deterioration you should expect. Soil is great for hiding the fact that a fabric is about to split or break up, so you will need to check carefully. Remember, once you put the cleaning solutions on and start to agitate it can be too late. If a fabric is weak in a particular area it doesn't mean that you can't clean it, but you may have to change from your normal method of cleaning. Perhaps consider using a piece of net curtain over the area and clean through it. I use a black polyester fly screen as it doesn't rot or stain, it's
newslink
page 8
very strong and it most certainly doesn't lose its colour. Once the damage has occurred then it usually means a professional upholsterer has to be contacted, because it's rare that it can be easily repaired. Texture Change This problem occurs more frequently with velvet type fabrics, of which there are plenty on the market in so many different fibre blends. Some are plastic fibres like polyester or nylon; others can be cottons, linens, rayon and so on. All have their own way of contributing to texture change. The plastic type can melt when using an iron, a hair dryer on a high setting or even when subjected to hot coffee. Texture change in cotton can result from something as simple as contact with water and not brushing the pile after cleaning or, worse still, using too high a temperature so the pile is reset. Rayon loses strength when wet cleaned and therefore expands or breaks down enough for the texture to be irreversibly changed. Texture change is another reason why it is so important to do a test, such as a burn or wet test, to see if the fibre distorts. Again, perform the test on the edge of a cushion preferably at the zip end. Always explain what you are doing so your client will understand. If the results don't look good you may need to perform a dry clean or simply just walk away. Once a pile fabric distorts it is very difficult to reverse, sometimes you can re-wet and do some brushing against the lay of the pile and then the
Diary Dates 2016
opposite way to reset it, but once you get to this stage your client will probably have lost some confidence in you. My advice is to educate yourself and then the client. If you do this you are much less likely to need to come back with an excuse.

AMAZING! They do say that as you get older you become invisible... it's true then! So‌ what did I find this time? Well, I found loads of lovely rugs of all different types and sizes. This time the range was a little cheaper than the one I encountered on my trip to John Lewis the other month. But, nevertheless, it was still very interesting. Firstly I came across several Peg rugs (see two pics directly above) with a 100% Wool pile made in India. If you are ever asked to clean one of these
especially if you go for the high alkaline option to clean them. I also saw some very interesting Dhurry rugs (see pic above). I haven't come across this type of rug for a couple of years now, but they are obviously still out there. These were again made in India, but had 100% Cotton face fibres (Cellulosic Browning to watch out for here PLUS possible buckling at the edges). Don't forget that there are two sides to these rugs (quite literally) so when cleaning them adjust your pricing accordingly.

One particularly nice rug (well I liked it anyway) I came across was a 100% Wool sculptured rug (see first pic below). I can see that consideration would need to be given to moisture absorption levels with this one, plus there could potentially be a loss of suction from the extraction machine due to the
quite thin so there could possibly be some differential shrinkage when cleaning. Finally I saw some very interesting Polyester cut pile rugs (see last pic), some with a semi-shag pile which is very soft to the feel. I can see this being very attractive for bedroom carpets. Poor
quite large difference in pile heights. The next rug I saw could make your work quite interesting (see pic directly above). How about a mixture of Cotton, Jute and Wool loop pile? I have to admit I do love a challenge and maybe I might just get the opportunity to have a go at one of these little beauties someday. I also came across several rugs and runners woven the Belgian Wilton style with Jute backing and complete with the 100% Polypropylene cut pile (see pic, top right hand column). These were
resilience, I am sure, will be quite evident in the form of distortion. Cleaning and setting the pile will improve the appearance (if only temporarily). I hope this article will remind you just how important it is to find out exactly what it is you are cleaning before you start the work. REMEMBER all is not what it may seem… so… CHECK! I did just about have time to pop into the café for a coffee and sticky bun before I left the store. I also took some pictures of various pieces of upholstery. I will share these with you next month…

Sunlight damage
NCCA Library
A
lmost every interior textile (carpets, rugs, upholstery, curtains and wall coverings) will lighten in colour or fade over a period of time. The extent of damage depends on the item's location, exposure to light and elements, colour intensity and the type of dyes and the dyeing method used. An interior textile which has been solution-dyed (or producer-coloured) is least susceptible to sunlight fading. The pigments are added to the polymer before the fibres are formed, sealing in the colour. Most olefins (polypropylene and polyethylene), many acrylics and some polyester and nylon fibres used in carpets are dyed using this method. Lighter shades will usually fade more quickly than darker shades because they contain less dye. Most dyes are composed of two or more colour components. If one colour is affected more than the other, the fading may appear as a colour change rather than a lightening of the colour. For example, many greenish hues are made from yellow and blue dyes. If the yellow dye is affected and the blue is not, the green textile may seem to be turning blue. To confirm this process for yourself visit a museum and examine antique tapestries with trees and grass. These green colours now appear very blue because the yellow dye has faded. In other instances colours may fade uniformly, appearing as a lighter shade of the original colour. In severe cases the colour may be completely

removed, appearing to be 'bleached' white. The fibre itself may also deteriorate. This is especially problematic with silk textiles. The effects of sunlight damage may be disguised by soiling, only becoming evident once the cleaning work has been carried out. So... always check carefully for signs of colour loss/change during your pre-clean survey and always make sure that you present (in writing) the results of your inspection to the client.

The Carpet Cleaners Carnival is an unmissable industry event. But don't just take our word for it, see what some of the visitors said about CCC last year... “I had a great day at the 2015 Carnival! I met up with some old friends and picked up more valuable ideas from Allan Simmon's marketing seminars, even though I have seen them a few times before… you never stop learning! Well done to everyone involved in organising the event, particularly Allan Simmons who I know put a lot of time and effort into getting the exhibitors there.” - Dean Haywood (Five Star Furnishing Care Consultants) ******************************************************* “I had a great time at the CCC as always. It's a great laugh and a chance to catch up with old and new friends!” - Andrew Southan (Executive Carpet Care) ******************************************************* “Another enjoyable event, many thanks to everyone.” - Keith Sanderson (Derby Carpet Cleaners) ******************************************************* “My family and I had a great day at the NCCA Carnival at Wicksteed Park. Thank you for another brilliant day… to everyone involved in the organisation of the event, to the NCCA Corporate members and other exhibitors and to all the people who attended with their friends and family. It was so lovely to catch up with old friends and make new ones. Thank you all so much.” - Peter Collins (Collins Cleaning Company) ******************************************************* “Congratulations on a fantastic day! It was very informative and it was great to meet everyone.” Paul Waite (Careful Clean) ******************************************************* “Thanks for hosting the event. It was a really enjoyable day.” - Sean O'regan (Sor Clean) ******************************************************* “I had a great time at the Carnival. The seminars were excellent! “Dear NCCA team, many thanks for a great day at Wicksteed Park on Saturday - my first visit. My colleague and I (with a mere 66yrs in carpet cleaning between us) were asking ourselves, on the way to the venue, where all the enthusiastic suppliers of our products and the cleaners are these days (there just doesn't seem to be anyone). Then, on arrival, we met Richard from Chemspec, Derek Bolton, followed by Tony Abbott, Alan Cox and Paul Pearce (they made us experienced cleaners look like mere amateurs!). Paul's presentation on viscose carpets reassured us. Thank you Paul, you seemed to be speaking for only ten minutes (although I know it was a lot longer). The way you communicate the knowledge you have to both new and old carpet cleaners is a testimony to the enthusiasm you have for your subject. Your presentation alone was well worth the visit. We went away with more knowledge than we came with and a renewed enthusiasm for our profession. Many thanks NCCA!” - Alan Arnold (AA Carpet, Curtain and Upholstery Cleaners Ltd) ******************************************************* “I had a great day, meeting old friends and welcoming new ones. I can't wait until next year's event already.” - Billy Russell (Mavis Russell Cleaning Ltd) ******************************************************* “Thank you for putting on another great event. We all had a great time, especially our son Harry.” - Ian Hayter (Herts Pro Carpet Cleaning) ******************************************************* “I wanted to say what a wonderful day I had at the 2015 Carnival. I arrived early (before the Exhibitors had set up) for a coffee and bacon sarnie and was, I believe, the last attendee to leave. There was so much to see and learn. Allan Simmons and his advice on marketing (the 'Black Art' as Nicky described it) was fantastic! I also got some great ideas on rug cleaning from John Bryden and a 'freebie' from Paul Pearce (some Sebo dry carpet powder)… these things alone were more than worth the hour's drive! A great day out, and 'all for nowt'! I will certainly be there next year.” - Tom Laity (ServiceMaster)

ne of the most important elements in any business transaction is making that first impression a memorable one. Whether it is an interview for a job, a meeting with a potential client to discuss a new contract or merely a lady (did I say 'merely'?) who wants her carpets or upholstery cleaned. I was picked up from home and Whichever one it is, shuttled to their office to that initial contact and complete the paperwork and the image you portray collect a vehicle. It was an excellent car, but after a week I with a replacement vehicle for a couple of weeks was only just about coming to terms with SOME whilst mine was repaired. Traffic this time. I was collected and taken to the office, and once again, the vehicle was immaculate and provided a comfortable ride. Whilst the transaction was taking place I couldn't help but notice that all the staff, ladies as well as gents, wore smart suits complete with ties (a tie is something of a rarity these days!). Everything about them oozed total professionalism. I was also treated with the utmost curtesy throughout and they really couldn't do enough to help. When I attended my first NCCA training course (all those years ago) the Training Team all wore dark blue blazers, grey flannel trousers, white shirts, polished black shoes and, YES, a tie. When I joined the team I was asked if I had a blazer‌. it was, apparently, a requirement for the job! The training course promoted professionalism, so obviously we had to look the part. Creating a good first impression with a smart appearance should be an integral part of the marketing strategy for ANY company. So, like Enterprise Rent-a-car, you should think carefully about your dress code. A clean vehicle with a clean and tidy interior is also very important. After all we are selling 'CLEAN' aren't we? Another well-known retail company used to (I'm not sure if they still do) always have a mirror situated between the staff room and the shop area so that all staff could check their appearance before meeting the public. They obviously realised just how important first impressions really are.
Help to stamp out logo misuse The NCCA logo and the name NATIONAL CARPET CLEANERS ASSOCIATION are officially registered trademarks. We need your help to ensure that only genuine members of the Association use the coveted name and logo and to safeguard our good name from use by unscrupulous individuals or companies. If you become aware of an individual or company using our name and/or logo, and you have reason to believe that they are not members of the NCCA, please send us any evidence you can, together with any other information that might help us when we take a particular case to Trading Standards. We accept as evidence the appearance of our name or logo on websites or any printed material. In the case of official publications we would need to know the date and name of the journal/directory in which misuse occurred. It is in everyone's interest to help us stamp out the illegal use of our name and logo, so please be vigilant. We assure you that, with the right evidence, we will press Trading Standards to prosecute offenders. One trader has already been successfully prosecuted for making a false statement by means of a leaflet bearing the NCCA logo. His County Council Trading Standards brought the prosecution and the company was fined and ordered to pay costs towards the prosecution. The company was further ordered to pay compensation to an aggrieved customer.

Learning to remove those spots and stains Ray Austin (Ray and Jackie Austin, Shropshire)
O
ur daughter joined our business nine months ago straight from school. She is doing an apprenticeship with us (a government sponsored training course on customer services) and has also attended the NCCA Carpet and Upholstery Cleaning course. More recently she attended the NCCA Advanced Spot and Photograph ©NCCA Stain Removal course. I have also done this course several times over the years. So… did I learn something new every time? Well, yes I did! It was good to go over the different types of spots and stains that we may come across and the different chemicals that can be used to remove
them. I particularly liked learning about bleaches, including what they are used for and how to apply them properly and safely. It doesn't matter how long you have been in this industry you can always learn something new. And, as it's never a good idea to do all your learning on a client's carpets and upholstery (I'm sure you probably don't want more soft furnishings to add to the existing collection in your home!), it is always worthwhile attending a training course to keep your knowledge up to date. Although it will initially cost you time and money, it will actually save you both of these things in the long run.

Never underestimate the value of good customer service David Coker
I
n the October issue of Newslink I wrote an article entitled 'Another reason not to market by price'. In it I referred to a restaurant that I had been to many times. They were more expensive than most but the food was good and the service and atmosphere friendly. It was busy most of the time. However, things had changed and they began heavily discounting in order to attract clients. I reported that the service and atmosphere had changed dramatically. Since than I have returned to give them one more try. Here's my experience… As I had difficulty booking a table the last time, I decided to phone up several days in advance to secure a table. Success! I managed to book a table at the front of the restaurant where it's quieter, just as I wanted. The person who answered the phone seemed a little hurried, but at least I had my table booked. However, upon arrival I found a queue at the entrance which was unusual. What was more unusual was the length of time we had to stand and wait before we were seen to. It was well in excess of five minutes. And then… no booking! It

had not been entered into the book. After a few minutes we were told that there were no seats at the front of the restaurant and that we would have to sit at the rear. Upon being seated, I noticed something that I had never seen before. We were in a walkway area and the carpet was absolutely thick with grease. Presumably they can't afford to have their carpets cleaned anymore. So… it looks as if the writing's on the wall! They've obviously entered the 'commodity market', trying to compete based on a low price. They've wrongly assumed that their customers come to their restaurant just to eat food and don’t care about anything else. It's already affected their customer service and the level of cleanliness. This will lead to more of their
'traditional' clients leaving, leading to more discounted offers leading to lower profits, a lower class of untrained staff and lower service. So, the lessons are clear: ŸNEVER allow your business to become a commodity. ŸIt's very hard to make a profit if you're attracting customers based on price.

Managing an ageing workforce Mike Robinson, chief executive of the British Safety Council, writes about our ageing workforce and why the BSC support the new Healthy Workplaces for All Ages campaign... The European workforce is ageing fast. By 2030 employees aged over 55 are expected to make up 30% or more of the total workforce in many EU countries. In the UK 30% or more of the total workforce is already over 50 years' old, while employees aged 60 and over constitute 23% of the workforce, and this figure is set to rise to 30.7% by 2020. This demographic trend creates significant challenges and opportunities for both employers and their workforces. That's why the European Agency for Safety & Health at Work (EU-OSHA) has launched the Healthy Workplaces for All Ages campaign. It is set to alert European employers to the urgency of the situation and the need to respond to it in a positive way. The British Safety Council, the champion of health & safety in Britain and the thought leader of the sector, gives its wholehearted support to this initiative. The official retirement age in EU Member States is increasing. In the next two decades a large proportion of employees over 50 will leave work for ever, taking their market expertise, professional experience and skills with them. Meanwhile the demographic data suggests that there is unlikely to be a sufficient supply of

younger people in Britain who would replace retiring workers. These facts cannot be ignored by any employer. Retaining older workers will become not only an economic but also a social imperative. The companies that would be prepared to retain older employees will remain more competitive and diverse, with a greater pool of skills and talent. However, longer working lives would mean greater exposure to a variety of health-related risks. The management of issues such as disability prevention, rehabilitation and return to work will increase in importance. Older workers are also more vulnerable to certain hazards, particularly in an industrial work environment. Therefore the introduction of specific measures to ensure work safety and the efficiency of older employees, as well as agesensitive risk assessments, would have to become a key part of occupational health and safety policies. The sustainable management of an ageing workforce is challenging: some existing employment practices need to be reconsidered, management training is necessary and in some cases it is essential to influence existing mindsets that equate older employees with higher than average costs and illness. Truly modern employers understand that by providing an age-friendly working environment, they are creating a committed and motivated
