Welcome The summer season is nothing if not eclectic, ranging from our resident RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra to Ladysmith Black Mambazo, from Bryn Terfel to The High Kings, Beethoven to Fats Waller. So something for every musical taste! In July the National Concert Hall is delighted to present two iconic American female singer songwriters, Mary Chapin Carpenter and Emmylou Harris, and to host a special tribute to another, Carole King and her landmark 1971 album Tapestry. In August a special series ‘This must be the place’ features three significant but very different contemporary artists; Marc Almond (August 1), Sun Kil Moon (August 6) and Keaton Henson (August 15). The RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra completes its Beethoven Piano Concerto series with Michael McHale playing the Concerto No. 4 (July 3) and Hugh Tinney performing the Emperor concerto (July 10) and then rounds off its year before heading off on its well-earned annual holidays with an evening of Movie Classics (July 24). This sets the scene nicely for the RTÉ Concert Orchestra to take up Friday evening residence in August , with the great Welsh baritone Bryn Terfel kicking things off on July 31 in a series that also includes Marti Pellow (August 14) and two nights in the company of John Wilson celebrating the music of Hollywood legend John Williams (August 21 & 22). RTÉ’s Tuesday lunchtime orchestral concerts are a staple of the Hall’s summer programme, offering our audiences an hour of popular classics in the company of the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra in July and the RTÉ Concert Orchestra in August. Also at lunchtime, on Thursdays during August, the talented young Irish musicians that comprise Ensemble Avalon present a series of four concerts in the John Field Room.

Young musicians are also to the fore on July 12 when the National Youth Orchestra of Ireland presents its Summer Proms and the National Concert Hall is proud to launch a new initiative for emerging professional musicians in August, SinfoNua, which gives two performances under David Brophy with guest soprano Celine Byrne on August 12 and 14. Other summer highlights include the exhilarating Ladysmith Black Mambazo from South Africa (July 2); a colourful fiesta of Mexican music and dance (July 4) and American jazz musician Jason Moran presenting his inimitable tribute to fellow jazz legend Fats Waller (August 12). As August draws to a close, the National Concert Hall’s International Concert Season 2015/16 launches with the first visit to Ireland of Norway’s Bergen Philharmonic, one of the world’s oldest orchestras, this year celebrating its 250th anniversary and which comes to Dublin direct from the BBC Proms in London. Finally, as we head into autumn, we can look forward not only to the other delights in the International Concert Season but also to a special weekend celebrating W.B. Yeats, the start of the RTÉ NSO season and a host of great artists across all musical genres, from St. Etienne (September 8) to star violinist Nicola Benedetti (September 30). The National Concert Hall itself enters an exciting phase this Summer as work will start on the refurbishment of the Kevin Barry Room as a dedicated 130 seat Recital Room, with other ancillary facilities and services, due to be completed by Easter 2016. The first part of a major development programme, the new space will allow us to offer you, our audience, an ever more varied, exciting and engaging programme.
