Welcome to our What’s on Guide for September and October 2024.
The days may be getting shorter but there is still plenty of reason for good cheer at the National Concert Hall, with the first concerts in our exciting 2024/2025 season taking place in September. The International Orchestras & Recitals Series featuring the legendary Sir Simon Rattle and the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra commence proceedings on Saturday 7 September followed by the National Symphony Orchestra with globally-renowned mezzo-soprano Dame Sarah Connolly and conductor Mihhail Gerts on Friday 13 September. Our forthcoming season is jam-packed with delightful events for all.
The International Orchestras & Recitals Series also boasts two dates by the revered Philip Glass Ensemble as part of their NCH Residency on Thursday 10 and Friday 11 October, the second with the National Symphony Orchestra, and also a special Studio appearance by celebrated guitarist Sean Shibe on Tuesday 17 September. The NSO season continues with
numerous highlights including revered conductor Leonard Slatkin marking his 80th birthday on Friday 27 September, the highly-anticipated Family Concert: Our Precious Planet with the National Symphony Orchestra on Sunday 29 September and a Puccini centenary year gala concert with conductor Carlo Rizzi on Friday 25 October.
Other highlights over the coming months include the new Perspectives Series which kicks off with Grammy Award-winner Arooj Aftab on Sunday 13 October and performance artist CHRISTEENE with Peaches and David Hoyle, who pay tribute to Sinead O’Connor in The Lion, The Witch and The Cobra on Sunday 27 October. The NCH Talks series sees visits by celebrated chef Yotam Ottolenghi as part of his Comfort Tour on Wednesday 18 September and author extraordinaire Sally Rooney on Saturday 21 September.

Richter takes to the main stage on Wednesday 30 and Thursday 31
October, piano maestro Jamie Duffy makes a welcome return to The Studio on Wednesday 18 and Thursday 19
September, Saturday 28 September sees the legendary singer-songwriter Nick Lowe in concert and Camerata Ireland perform on Tuesday 15 October as part of their 25th Anniversary celebrations.
On Friday 20 September Culture Night activities include the National Symphony Orchestra with conductor Ryan McAdams performing Philip Glass’ magnificently moving Violin Concerto No. 1 and John Luther Adams’ Become Ocean plus our Learning & Participation Department have an exciting mix of workshops which run three times over the evening – Gamelan, Percussion and Pop-Up Choir.
September also sees the return of our beloved Chamber Series in the Kevin Barry Recital Room which opens
on Sunday September 15 with the lauded ConTempo Quartet and sees a welcome return by exquisite pianist Máire Carroll on Thursday 26 and Friday 27 September for two evenings of dazzling piano études.
Our Learning & Participation Department have a wide selection of activities over this time including new terms for Mini Music, Percussion Lab and Gamelan Ensemble. In addition, there will be two Composer Lab Public Workshops with the National Symphony Orchestra on Monday 16
September.

On Friday 13 September mezzo-soprano Dame Sarah Connolly will perform a programme of Mahler, Dvorˇák and Alma Mahler with the National Symphony Orchestra and conductor Mihhail Gerts.
Here are 5 Things To Know about the world-renowned singer:
1. Dame Sarah Connolly was born in County Durham and educated at Queen Margaret’s School, York, Clarendon College in Nottingham and then studied piano and singing at the Royal College of Music.
2. After spending five years with The BBC Singers, she made the move to the world of opera. Her breakthrough role was as Xerxes in the 1998 English National Opera production of Handel’s Serse (Xerxes), directed by Nicholas Hytner.
3. Dame Sarah has sung at numerous festivals including the Aldeburgh, Edinburgh, Lucerne, Salzburg and Tanglewood Festivals and the BBC Proms. Opera engagements have taken her to the Metropolitan Opera, the Royal Opera House, the Paris Opera, La Scala Milan, the Vienna and Munich State Operas and more.
4. A prolific recording artist, Dame Sarah’s many discs include Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas (OAE); Elgar’s Sea Pictures and The Dream of Gerontius (BBC Symphony Orchestra/Sir Andrew Davis – winner of a Gramophone Award); Britten’s Phaedra (BBC Symphony Orchestra/ Gardner) and Mendelssohn’s Elijah , Mozart’s Mass in C Minor and Haydn’s Scena di Berenice (Gabrieli Consort/McCreesh).
5. She was awarded a CBE in the 2019 New Year’s Honours and was made a DBE in the 2017 Birthday Honours. In 2020, she was made an Honorary Member of the Royal Philharmonic Society and in 2023, she was awarded The King’s Medal for Music, an award given annually to an outstanding individual who has had a major influence on the musical life of the nation.

On Sunday 13 October Grammy Award-winning musician Arooj Aftab makes her National Concert Hall debut as part of the Perspectives Series.
Here are 5 Things To Know about the Pakistani-American singer, composer and producer:
1. Arooj Aftab was born to Pakistani parents in Saudi Arabia and moved to Lahore, Pakistan when she was 11 years old. She moved to the USA in 2005 at the age of 19 to study music production and engineering at Berklee College of Music in Boston.
2. She has released four albums to date, the most recent being this year’s Night Reign (described as ‘wondrous’ by Pitchfork). Her music incorporates a range of influences from semi-classical Pakistani music and Urdu poetry to jazz harmonies and experimental music.
3. On the 75th diamond jubilee anniversary of Pakistan, President Arif Alvi awarded Aftab the Pride of Performance Award, Pakistan’s most prestigious award for excellence in the field of art and music.
4. In 2018 she won an Outstanding Politics and Government Documentary Emmy Award for her work as editor on Armed With Faith , a film that follows the daily travails of the Pakistani Bomb Disposal Unit.
5. Aftab was nominated for the Best New Artist Award and won the Best Global Music Performance Award for her song ‘Mohabbat’ at the 64th Annual Grammy Awards in April 2022. She became the first-ever Pakistani artist to win a Grammy Award. In 2024 she was nominated in the Best Alternative Jazz Album and Best Global Music Performance categories.

Explore the sound of fairy harp music with harpist Aisling Ennis.
Join Aisling as she tells the tale of King of the Fairies Dagha and his magic harp. Introducing us to the three different types of traditional tunes which encapsulate the emotional spectrum - goltraí (sorrowful), geantraí (lively and cheerful), and ending the concert with suantraí (the lullabies).
This is a relaxed event, where everybody is welcome to move about the space as they want.
This concert is designed for toddlers to 8-year-olds and their families, all are welcome.
Adults must be accompanied by a child.

Mini Music Term 1

Mini Music is an action-packed music workshop experience for youngsters aged 3 months to 8 years old. Each of the Mini Music sessions is 30 minutes long and is led by a highly trained workshop facilitator, using tuned and untuned percussion instruments and of course the one instrument we all have – the voice.
The sessions are held over three terms, each term lasting 10 weeks – so there is a real sense of development for all participants. With the exception of the Mini Maestros sessions, all children should be accompanied by an adult.
Cost: €120 for each ticket / €155 for each Mini Maestros ticket

A public workshop in which Composer Lab 2024 participants Amelia Clarkson, Barry Halpin, Finola Merivale and Yue Song each explore compositional ideas for their individual works-in-progress in the live orchestral setting.
Composer Lab is a professional development initiative delivered in partnership by the National Symphony Orchestra and the Contemporary Music Centre, Ireland, in association with RTÉ lyric fm.
