APRIL HIGHLIGHT
Liking The Vikings The Danish String Quartet promotes its Viking ancestry but aspires only to capturing the hearts and minds of music audiences with its brilliant individualism.

NATIONAL CONCERT HALL BOX OFFICE TEL: 01 417 0000 • www.nch.ie
Vikings are not what they used to be. Time was when they tied up on our local rivers, jumped out of longboats and swooped down on our women and silverware. Simple stuff really. Not any more if we are to judge by the Danish String Quartet, rising stars of the chamber world, who now intend to capture only hearts and minds with the quality of their music. This four-man group revels in the “Vikingness’’ of its imagery and proudly promotes it. True, there is an absence of horns and helmets, swords and shields of the olden days, but they do promise to be “a string quartet with above average amounts of beard... which finds itself at the core of classical repertoire, and can also play an odd folk gig.’’ It cannot go unremarked either that these hirsute heroes of classical genre are arriving in Dublin with perfect timing - they’re playing at the National Concert Hall on April 22, the eve of the millennium of that embarrassing little event around Clontarf . The group has played in Belfast this year to rave reviews. Whatever about the genealogy of this foursome, they are now being lauded for doing for chamber music what the original Fab Four did for pop music - giving it a good shake-up. The group comprises violinists Rune Tonsgaard Sørensen and Frederik Øland Olse, violist Asbjørn Nørgaard and Norwegian cellist Fredrik Sjölin. Says Sorensen, “We are three Danes and one Norwegian, making this a truly Scandinavian endeavour. We often joke about ourselves being modern Vikings – perhaps a touch more harmless than our ancestors.’’ The quartet formed in Denmark in 2002, and it soon established itself at home with a distinctive and adventurous style and it did not take long to make a name for itself at home while making excursions to neighbouring states to carry off lucrative prizes - just like their forbears. Its first major break came when it was chosen as Danish Radio’s quartet-in-residence in 2006, capturing a wide-ranging home audience while also grabbing the opportunity to record Carl Nielsen’s string quartets and releasing them on two CDs, both of which were widely praised. The New York Times remarked that “they played Nielsen’s quartets as if they owned them’’.
But even this was a preliminary step on their way to a sensational break-through in 2009 when, against awesome opposition, the beardies scooped five major awards including overall winner - at the prestigious London International String Quartet Competition at Wigmore Hall, a triennial event. Since their London breakthrough the quartet soared in the rankings by winning Denmark’s most prestigious cultural award, the Nielsen Prize, while soon after that it was invited to join the Chamber Music Society of the Lincoln Center in New York, an honour generally regarded as an entrée to every leading concert hall on the American continent. Also, nearer to home, their London triumph led to their selection as BBC New Generation Artists for 2013-15, an enormous boost not just in stage bookings but in development of their discography. Says Sørensen, “Three of us met very early in our lives in the Danish countryside at an amazing summer camp for enthusiastic amateur musicians. Not yet teenagers, we were the youngest players, so we hung out all the time playing football and chamber music together. During the regular school year we would get together often to play music and just have fun. The music grew and so did our friendship.” The emerging group came under the notice of a professor at the Royal Academy of Music in Copenhagen who recognised their abilities and began coaching them regularly. “All of the sudden, at the ages of 15 and 16, we were a serious string quartet. It all happened so fast that none of us seemed to be aware of the transition. We were up and running before we even noticed”. “Playing string quartets is our job, and it’s hard work, but we mostly do it for pleasure, like we always did. There is so much amazing music to delve into, and our hope is to continue our travels through life and music together as a quartet”. By Dick O’Riordan, classical music columnist of The Sunday Business Post The Danish String Quartet plays music by Haydn, Nielsen and Beethoven in the National Concert Hall International Concert Series on April 22. Verdi’s Missa da Requiem is every bit as intense, fervent, vital and theatrical as any of his operas. Verdi’s Requiem is a thrilling blend of orchestra, chorus and soloists with energetic rhythms, uplifting melodies and drama. Premiered in 1874 (Church of San Marco, Milan) to mark the first anniversary of the Italian poet/novelist Alessandro Manzoni’s death, it featured female soloists and choristers - almost unheard of at the time for liturgical oratorio.

The Danish String Quartet - made its debut in the Copenhagen Summer Festival in 2002. In the course of remarkably short time the quartet drew attention to itself for its highly committed musicianship and enthralling style, and the ensemble quickly established itself as the most promising news in the classical music world in Denmark. “I cannot imagine a more involved performance” The New York Times

MAY HIGHLIGHT
Printer Clips Paul Noonan 30
NATIONAL CONCERT HALL BOX OFFICE TEL: 01 417 0000 • www.nch.ie
Just when you thought that the members of highly regarded Irish group BellX1 might be taking it nice, handy and easy following the release of last year’s superlative Chop Chop album, along comes a curve ball in the slim but manly shape of Paul Noonan. The band’s lead singer is releasing a collaborative album, Printer Clips, and is playing quite the unique show to launch it. Not a solo album, not a band offshoot in any way, but rather Paul achieving his aim of singing with a range of women whose voices he has long admired, Printer Clips sees him duet on original material with the likes of Joan as Policewoman, Martha Wainwright, Lisa Hannigan, Gemma Hayes, Julia Stone, Amy Milan, Cathy Davey, Danielle Harrison and Maria Doyle Kennedy. The idea for such an ambitious project has, says Paul, been on the back burner for some years; yet seeing a performance by Americana singersongwriter and alternative country sweetheart Gillian Welch crystallized his thoughts and spurred him on. “The simplicity of her performance brought it home to me that you can capture voices and do something powerful with them without enhancing them too much. That gave me the confidence to go ahead and contact a bunch of people to see if they’d be into doing a song with me.” A wish list of potential collaborators was duly drafted; as the months passed, and emails and phone calls mounted up, Paul began to see results form from the ideas. Irish-based female singers (which include Lisa Hannigan, Gemma Hayes, Cathy Davey, Danielle Harrison and Maria Doyle Kennedy) provided the logistical backbone to the project, while the international names (including America’s Joan as Policewoman, Australia’s Julia Stone and Canada’s Martha Wainwright and Amy Milan) provided the opportunity for clocking up some air miles.
The recording, admits Paul, was done “on the hoof” in basements, bedrooms and hallways in America, Canada, London and Dublin, which meant that the requirement to record the songs ‘in the moment’ and without rehearsing the life and soul out of them was adhered to. (“From the recordings I wanted what I call ‘the-not-quite-sure’ takes,” says Paul.) Setting up the recording equipment where people felt the most comfortable was also an integral part of the process – hence the recording of Martha Wainwright’s collaboration in her brother Rufus’s apartment in Montreal. The original songs consisted of material that Paul either had kicking about for a while – looking for a suitable home, if you like – or that he composed specifically for the project. Meanwhile, the stylistic modus operandi was little more than two guitars accompanying two vocalists. As for the song content, Paul explains they are somewhat more narrative-based than those we would be used to hearing courtesy of BellX1. “The overall sensibilities of the songs are candid and intimate,” he confides. BellX1 have played before on the National Concert Hall stage, but not Noonan outside the remit of the band. The way these things work, the exact line-up probably won’t be nailed down until some days before the actual show, but he says he’s working on getting as many fragrant collaborators as possible onto the stage on the night. Yes, you read correctly: Paul Noonan will be surrounded by women. Some guys – they really have all the luck, don’t they? By Tony Clayton-Lea, The Irish Times music critic Paul Noonan’s Printer Clips debuts at the National Concert Hall as part of ESB Live 2014, Saturday May 24th. JUNE HIGHLIGHT
Wayne Shorter
54
NATIONAL CONCERT HALL BOX OFFICE TEL: 01 417 0000 • www.nch.ie
Without a Net? It’s a particularly appropriate title for Wayne Shorter’s most recent album, and, at the age of 80, it’s suitable phrase for his work and creative methods. Not for nothing has he been described as jazz’s greatest living small-group composer and a certified contender for the genre’s greatest living tenor and soprano saxophonist. That Shorter is also one of jazz music’s last men standing (so to speak) is something to be cherished and respected. Born in Newark, New Jersey, August 25, 1933, Shorter began to make a name for himself in the late 1950s as a member of Art Blakeley’s Jazz Messengers, an outfit he eventually became musical director of. Come the mid-60s, Shorter was persuaded to join Miles Davis, whose band at that time included the likes of Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter and Tony Williams. This quintet has often been viewed as one of the most influential groups in jazz history, with Shorter’s compositions (including Prince Of Darkness, Footprints, Sanctuary) being highlighted as the main reason for such justified praise. Davis himself bowed to Shorter’s exceptional skills, saying that the saxophonist brought into the quintet many intriguing ideas about engaging with the so-called ‘rules’: “If they didn’t work,” said Davis of Shorter in his 1989 self-titled autobiography, “then he broke them – but with musical sense. He understood that freedom in music was the ability to know the rules in order to bend them to your own satisfaction and taste.” And so it has continued, from then to now, rummaging through the rulebook and striking out whichever ones he doesn’t abide by. He has amiably discarded the notion that it might be easier to cruise through concerts by performing what he considers to be conventional jazz standards, and has said that it isn’t human to be comfortable (which may explain why he rarely sits down during a performance!).
For later entrants into jazz, Shorter is perhaps better known for his integral role in the development of fusion jazz, specifically through Weather Report, a group that he formed with another veteran Miles Davis’ alumni, keyboardist Joe Zawinul. Even those people who say they don’t listen to jazz have heard him – his contributions have appeared on many Joni Mitchell albums, and if that extended, thoroughly agile solo on the title track of Steely Dan’s 1977 album, Aja, sounds too cool for words, then that’s because it’s one of Shorter’s. While his recorded output has declined somewhat (in the past ten years he has released only two studio albums – 2003’s Alegría and 2013’s Without A Net), he has continued to feature regularly on Grammy lists: in 2004, Alegría received the award for Best Jazz Instrumental Album, while earlier this year, Shorter nabbed yet another Grammy gong for Best Improvised Jazz Solo (with Orbits, a track on Without A Net). There seems, then, to be an enduring level of creativity and regard for Wayne Shorter. He remains for the vast majority (if not all) of fans the aficionado’s choice and, indeed, the jazz musician’s jazz musician. Simply put, he refuses to stand still – except, of course, on stage, where he barely acknowledges he is being watched by a full house – and is, arguably, as much at the top of his game now as he was several decades ago. Negotiating with the unexpected is how Shorter describes his live shows. For the self-respecting jazz fan – let alone of any genre that likes to change shape at the flick of a wrist or the raise of an eyebrow – you can’t ask for more than that. By Tony Clayton-Lea, The Irish Times music critic Wayne Shorter Quarter performs at the National Concert Hall as part of Perspectives 2014, Saturday June 14. By the end of each session, the group will be able to perform a piece of percussion ensemble music as a class. This interactive hands-on session lasts 50 minutes.
Fusing storytelling, music making and composition with arts and crafts ‘Stringalong’ introduces children to the instruments and sounds of the string family. Instrument demonstrations and storytelling enable each child to visualise the difference between each instrument. Each child will be given the opportunity to compose their own piece of music during the session as well as making their own string instrument with twine, string, bamboo and cardboard. This interactive hands-on session lasts 60 minutes.

Gamelan Orchestra The Sultan of Yogyakarta, Sri Sultan Hamengkubuwono X, with the assistance of the Indonesian Embassy in Dublin London and the Provincial Government of Yogyakarta, Java, has gifted the National Concert Hall with a complete set of Javanese gamelan instruments. The gamelan, a set of bronze instruments which will accommodate up to thirty people, has been purpose-built by the Sultan’s gamelan artisans and work on the instruments. It is intended that the gamelan be widely used as part of the National Concert Hall’s education and outreach programme. Dr. Peter Moran, a composer and educator, will direct the new gamelan orchestra. Moran is currently director of the UCD Gamelan Group, which he helped establish last year. Gamelan Music Gamelan is Indonesia’s ancient classical music with a history stretching back almost a thousand years. It is an orchestra made up of tuned gongs and other bronze percussion instruments, with a handful of softer instruments such as the bamboo flute (suling), the two-stringed fiddle (rebab) and drums (kendhang). Unique tunings give each gamelan its own distinct personality, and it is common practice to give a gamelan a name and even celebrate its ‘birthday’ on the date when it was first played. Outside of the education and outreach programme, regular rehearsals will be held on Tuesday evenings, there will be two groups, one for players new to the gamelan and the other for existing gamelan players.
