DECEMBER HIGHLIGHT Goethe-Institut Choir Monday 10 December 8pm Mozart Festival Chorus Sat 22 December 3.15pm/8pm

The Glasnevin Musical Society Chorus Saturday 8 December 3pm/8pm

CHOIRS PROVIDE GOOD CHEER AND GOOD HEALTH This is the time of year when sleigh bells start jingling, Silent Nights start soaring and hallelujahs and hosannas start ringing around our concert halls, churches and theatres. And, not surprisingly, the epicentre for festive season choral activity is the National Concert Hall where every year a wonderful kaleidoscopic world of choirs is revealed in all its glory and diversity. The choirs of Ireland are part of our national treasure, the part -- hopefully -- that the Troika cannot get its hands on. From the minnows to the mighty, they are woven into the fabric of our rich cultural tapestry. They are loved and appreciated in all their forms and guises, from classical to barbershop 6

and gospel to jazz, and they provide us with much enjoyment, and -- increasingly -- good health. The health benefits have hit the headlines recently with British experts reporting that both singing and listening to choral music reduces the level of stress hormones and increases immune function. Two eminent professors went so far as to say that their effect on some chronic conditions is indisputable. “There are examples of arts on prescription and gyms on prescription, so why not singing on prescription too,” they asked. This facet has been reflected in the linking together of National Choral Singing Week in October with World Mental Health Day.

NATIONAL CONCERT HALL BOX OFFICE TEL: 01 417 0000 • www.nch.ie no booking fees

Choral participation is increasingly seen as an antidote to stress and depression and their effectiveness in developing friendships and communal bonding is indisputable. They are a place where team spirit and community pride go hand in hand. The choirs “centre” of Ireland is on the University of Limerick campus where the Association of Irish Choirs is located. This provides both a bedrock of information and a reservoir of advice, particularly though its excellent one-stop-shop website at www.aoic,ie The association reports an upsurge in choral activity and “a phenomenal interest’’ in gospel choirs particularly. It says about 25,000 people sing in Ireland’s choirs every week, not including widespread church or school activities. Young men are taking a much greater interest than of yore, with social media providing a major spur. Typical notices on the AOIC website provide a flavour of choral activity: “An enthusiastic musical directorconductor is required for a fun adult contemporary choir based in the Swords area of north Dublin. Immediate start”; and “The Limerick Ladies Close Harmony Singers are launching a new a capella choir that will meet regularly and rehearse a varied repertoire. The group has been established with goals of fun while learning and achieving singing and performance excellence. All ladies from 18 to 80-plus are welcome’’. The NCH sees regular towering performances by the finest groups in the land. All who have heard the RTÉ National Philharmonic Choir in full spate with the backing of our symphony orchestra will have experienced the power and glory of choral achievement. Because of their

religious fervour, oratorios have been popular in Ireland for centuries and performances by choirs such as Our Lady’s and the Culwick never fail to impress. There are also, of course, many smaller specialist choirs that can explore the exquisite vocal embroidery of composition. Here the National Chamber Choir, Anúna and New Dublin Voices spring easily to mind. The latter is a recent example of remarkable achievement. Founded in 2005 by Bernie Sherlock, it immediately swept all before it in Ireland -- including ESB choir of the 2009 Feis Ceoil -- before winning major prizes all over the continent. Nor should the quality of church singing be forgotten. The Palestrina is a cherished gem in the heart of Dublin city and compares favourably with the very best boys choirs in the world. The Lassus Scholars and junior Piccolo Lasso choirs of the Dublin Choral Foundation, formed in 1996, have had a major influence on choral training. And the exquisite singing by the choristers of St Patrick’s and Christ Church cathedrals is a precious asset. In recent times, British television has shown increased interest in choral output with programmes such as The Choir and Last Choir Standing. In Ireland, we can enjoy these while also singing the praises of the annual All-Island School Choir Competition on RTÉ which, though compelling in its simplicity, produces fever-pitch excitement that puts even The X-Factor in the shade. The message is clear: choirs are good for you. Dick O’Riordan is classical music columnist with The Sunday Business Post

FEBRUARY HIGHLIGHT

EUROPEAN MASTERWORKS 44

NATIONAL CONCERT HALL BOX OFFICE TEL: 01 417 0000 • www.nch.ie no booking fees

S

pring of last year brought into being for me a long-held ambition of mounting a piano recital series at the National Concert Hall, where each recital focused on a landmark of the repertoire, as the series title European Piano Masterworks reflected; three of the repertoire’s “giant” works, by Beethoven, Liszt and Ravel, formed the core of the series. But in music, as in science, one must always be looking forward, always looking to the next idea, the next project. And, rather than attempt to repeat the original series in a sort of “Mark Two” version, it seemed natural to stick with the central idea of presenting key works, but at the same time to vary things by broadening out to combine piano with other instruments and with voices, and even - just occasionally! – to give the piano a night off. Hence the forthcoming series of European Masterworks came into being. Major works for chamber music are at the heart of the new series, and these will be presented by some of the most active and esteemed musicians working in the field in Ireland today. By serendipity, the advent of the six-month European Presidency of Ireland in the first half of next year suggested a further function of the series - the aim of encompassing, over the course of the four concerts, as many of the European Union’s twenty-seven countries as we could. This year, the way the programmes have evolved, several of the concerts will have multiple contrasting masterpieces rather than just a single, mammoth one! I, along with Catherine Leonard and the RTÉ Vanbrugh Quartet - who I’m really delighted will be joining me - will be presenting indisputably major works by Chopin and Ravel, as well as one of the great quintets of the literature,

the impassioned Piano Quintet of the Belgian César Franck. I’m also delighted that Finghin Collins, Carol McGonnell and Elizabeth Cooney will be with us to play a very varied programme in the second concert. This will feature Brahms’ late masterpiece, his Clarinet Trio, of which a musicologist friend of the composer wrote to him: “It is as though the instruments were in love with each other.” Also in the programme is the outstanding and much-played work Contrasts by Bartok, written for a commission by clarinettist Benny Goodman. Assisting the piano to have its above-mentioned “night off” will be the wonderful National Chamber Choir of Ireland, whose programme, “A Eurocry”, emphasizes the light and the humorous, from Orlando Gibbons’ The Cryes of London and Clément Janequin’s Les Cris de Paris to Siobhán Cleary’s very international and multi-lingual study of tonguetwisters Theophilus Thistle and the Myth of Miss Muffet. Finally, to bring the series to its close, I’m delighted to welcome the Academy Chamber Ensemble – a new staff ensemble curated by Fionnuala Hunt from the Royal Irish Academy of Music – in their first full-length Dublin recital. Their varied programme, in which I shall play the resurgent piano, will culminate in Dvor ˇák’s most famous trio, the Dumky Trio, an unusual masterpiece and unique tour-de-force that bases all its powerfully emotional six movements on a popular type of Ukrainian folk song.” By Hugh Tinney European Masterworks 2013: Celebrating Ireland’s Presidency of The European Union begins Wednesday 20 February, 8pm. Tickets ¤20.

A virtually full Irish cast with some of our best International singers returning for this exciting production. Great value ticket prices and a top class production team. Once again, Lyric Opera brings together some of the finest Irish singers of this generation together for this Marriage of Figaro, probably one of the greatest operas ever written. The upstairs - downstairs story of marital life in the 18th century household of Count Almaviva is a razor sharp study of human nature. Many of the characters seem familiar to us all in some form or other from the predatory Count, to the sparky Susanna, the much-maligned Countess to the wily and mischievous Figaro. Mozart creates, through his music one of the most sublime scores ever written. Heaven inspired, it is a tour de force for both singers and orchestra and includes such stunning arias as Porgi, amor, Dove sono, Hai gia vinta la causa and Dei vieni, non tardar. With a story full of comedy, intrigue, flirtation and a tangled web of human emotions, each element weaves its way through this intricate farce of subterfuge, sexual shenanigans, fidelity and forgiveness… and all in the space of a single day. Opera in 4 Acts, set in the mid-1700 and sung in Italian with English Surtitles.

No less delightful is No. 6, Beethoven’s own transcription of his Violin Concerto. Les Arts Florissants Associate Conductor Jonathan Cohen is a conductor to look forward to.

BLOW THE DUST OFF YOUR TRUMPET Blow the Dust Off Your Trumpet is a project developed by The National Concert Hall’s Education & Outreach programme. It is designed to encourage older people, who once played instruments, to take them out of their cases, dust them off, and join fellow musicians in forming an orchestra. The ensemble is open to players of any level, instrument or style and aims to empower older people to rise to the artistic and physical challenges of playing their instruments while creating a musically orientated social community of older people, with The National Concert Hall as their own ‘clubhouse’. The National Concert Hall’s project for older musicians is entitled “Blow the Dust off Your Trumpet”. The orchestra is now at full capacity but we would still like to hear from you! We can either add you to the waiting list, or recommend other organisations that run music projects for older people. Call 085 842 1624 or email blowthedust@gmail.com for further information. We also love receiving your letters - you can write to us at: Education Department The National Concert Hall Earlsfort Terrace Dublin 2
