NATIONAL CONCERT HALL LEIPZIG MUSICAL CULTURE TOUR VOLUME 18 | ISSUE 2 | SUMMER 2014

Be inspired by the ‘City of heroes’ 4-nights/5-days 6HSWHPEHU

Leipzig earned the nickname of ‘The City of Heroes’ for its peaceful role in the 1989 revolution, however, this title could also easily be descriptive of the city’s remarkable musical residents, whom span centuries. This autumn we are delighted to offer our Friends one of our richest and most exciting Friends Music tours to date. This Autumn we venture to Leipzig; where many of the greatest German composers lived and worked and to the small town of Eisenach where J.S. Bach was born and grew up. You will visit the places where Richard Wagner was born, where Clara and Robert Schumann lived, where Felix Mendelsohn-Bartholdy and Anton Bruckner worked. You will also experience the famous Thomas Church, Bach’s work place for 27 years, which remains a lively destination of worship, fine art and the performance of Bach’s Cantata. You will enjoy the world famous Gewandhaus Orchestra and attend Motetts by J.S: Bach performed in the Thomas Church. All of this will be in the company of our specialist cultural tour guide whose expert knowledge of the area will ensure you get the utmost from this exclusive opportunity to visit this unrivalled Musical Mecca. A private luxury coach will take you through Thuringia’s picturesque, hilly landscape to the old town of Eisenach. Also included is a tour through the “Bachhausâ€?, birthplace of J.S. Bach and home of his parents, followed by a concert exclusively played on traditional instruments of the era. Overlooking Eisenach stands the impressive medieval castle of Wartburg which inspired Richard Wagner for his opera Thannhäuser which we will make sure to explore too. 4

Serves 4

Ingredients: s 12 asparagus spears, trimmed s 4 x 175g (6oz) skinless organic salmon fillets s 4 fresh dill sprigs s 4 slices Parma ham 10

s s s s s

juice of half lemon 1 tbsp olive oil 25g (1oz) butter lightly dressed mixed salad, to serve lemon wedges, to garnish

FEATURE - NEVEN MAGUIRE RECIPE VOLUME 18 | ISSUE 2 | SUMMER 2014

Make sure your salmon fillets are all even-sized and about 2.5cm (1in) thick to ensure even cooking. They also work well on the barbecue and can be made up to 12 hours in advance, covered with clingfilm and chilled until needed – just don’t add the squeeze of lemon juice until you’re ready to cook them.

Sun-dried Tomato Pesto Makes about 400ml (14fl oz)

Method: Preheat the oven to 190°C (375°F/gas mark 5). Blanch the asparagus spears in a pan of boiling salted water for 1 minute. Drain and quickly refresh under cold running water, then tip into a bowl of ice-cold water to cool completely. Drain well and pat dry on kitchen paper. Season each salmon fillet with pepper and arrange 3 asparagus spears, trimming them down as necessary, and a dill sprig on top of each fillet. Lightly wrap a slice of Parma ham around each bundle and place in a shallow non-metallic dish, then add a squeeze of lemon juice. Heat the olive oil in a large ovenproof frying pan over a medium-high heat and add the butter. Once it stops foaming, add the salmon wraps presentation-side down and cook for 4–5 minutes all over to seal. Transfer to the oven and roast for another 8 minutes, until the salmon wraps are cooked through. To serve, arrange the salmon wraps on warmed serving plates and spoon some of the rocket pesto to one side. Add some mixed salad to each plate and place the rest of the rocket pesto on the table. Have a separate dish of baby potatoes and lemon wedges.

Ingredients: s 175g (6oz) semi sun-dried tomatoes, roughly chopped s 8 large fresh basil leaves s 2 garlic cloves, peeled s 200ml (7fl oz) olive or rapeseed oil s sea salt and freshly ground black pepper s 1 tsp Tomato Purée Method: Place the semi sun-dried tomatoes in a food processor or blender with the basil leaves, tomato purée and garlic and pulse to finely chop. Switch the machine back on and slowly pour in the oil through the feeder tube until the pesto has emulsified. Transfer to a bowl with a spatula and season to taste. PREPARE AHEAD This can be made up to 3–4 days in advance and kept covered with clingfilm in the fridge.

Obviously we will be rehearsing for the Friday night concert with a different conductor and soloist each week and working on different projects at the beginning of the week. I will also be in work a few hours before or after the rehearsals to practise. During the rehearsals I will be negotiating with the conductor to create the best possible musical outcome and passing on the contributions of the other musicians. Outside of work on the platform, I am involved in regular meetings with the management team concerning all areas of the artistic side of the running of the orchestra, from job vacancies in the orchestra to future programming. 2Q 7XHVGD\ -XQH \RX ZLOO IHDWXUH DV VRORLVW LQ WKH RSHQLQJ FRQFHUW RI WKH 57e 162V 6XPPHU /XQFKWLPH VHULHV 7HOO XV D ELW DERXW WKH UHSHUWRLUH \RX ZLOO SOD\

HELENA WOOD VOLUME 18 | ISSUE 2 | SUMMER 2014

I am so looking forward to the lunchtime concert on 10th June. The pieces that I will be performing are wonderful works from the solo violin repertoire that are a joy to play. The Mozart Adagio and Rondo are two separate pieces that are often performed together. It is thought that the Adagio was written by Mozart as an alternative to the slow movement of his 5th violin concerto in A. The Rondo KRZHYHU ZDV SUREDEO\ ZULWWHQ DV D ´QDO PRYHPHQW IRU D FRQFHUWR ZULWWHQ E\ D lesser known composer. Tchaikovsky’s Souvenir d’un Lieu Cher was originally written as a set of 3 pieces for violin and piano and was later arranged to be played with orchestra by Alexander Glazunov. The MĂŠlodie and Scherzo are charming works which I really enjoy performing. 7KH UHFHQWO\ DQQRXQFHG 57e 162V 6XPPHU 6HDVRQ ZLOO LQFOXGH D UDQJH RI FRQFHUWV ZLWK VWDU SHUIRUPHUV DQG ULVLQJ VWDUV IURP WKH ZRUOGV RI FODVVLFDO DQG WUDGLWLRQDO PXVLF $SDUW IURP \RXU RZQ VROR SHUIRUPDQFH ZKDW ZLOO EH \RXU IDYRXULWHV" We have been very fortunate to have worked with some fantastic artists recently such as HĂĽkan Hardengerger, Stefan Jackiw and Barry Douglas as well as some very inspiring conductors. We have some great programmes coming up. The orchestra’s former Principal Conductor Gerhard Markson and the esteemed American conductor Andrew Litton will both make a welcome return, and we have some fantastic soloists also such as Claudia Boyle and Sir James Galway who I am very much looking forward to. :KR ZKDW LQVSLUHV \RX DV D SHUIRUPHU" The people that most inspire me as a performer are the musicians around me. Every day is different in its musical challenges but the standard of musicianship and professionalism of my colleagues at the RTÉ NSO consistently encourages me to raise my game as a player. :KDW ZRXOG \RX QDPH DV VRPH RI \RXU FDUHHU KLJKOLJKWV VR IDU" I feel very fortunate to have worked with a range of orchestras and ensembles GXULQJ P\ FDUHHU VR IDU ,W LV GLI´FXOW WR SLFN D VLQJOH RFFDVLRQ WKDW ZRXOG EH D highlight for me. I enjoyed working with the BBC orchestras in the UK and also with other orchestras in Europe and Australia. For 4 years I worked with English National Opera in London which also was very exciting. These experiences have all led me to the where I am now with the RTÉ NSO in Dublin and I am thoroughly enjoying working in a new city with exciting programmes and artists who join us throughout our season. Helena Wood will be the soloist in ‘The Enchanted Violin’, the opening concert in the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra’s Summer Lunchtime Series. Tuesday 10 June, 1.05pm at the National Concert Hall.
