FEBRUARY HIGHLIGHT

HOMAGE TO A MUSICAL SUPER HERO DANNY ELFMAN

F

or two decades, American composer Danny Elfman has masterfully scored the darker side of Hollywood. From monsters to super heros, innocence to malevolence, Elfman adds a mystical touch that distinguishes him from other newcomers of the 1980’s and early 1990’s. Born into a family of artists, Elfman has been known the longest as a flamboyant member of the rock band Oingo Boingo to which he belonged from 1979 to 1995. Mostly due to his connection with director Tim Burton, Elfman experimented in film scoring in the mid-1980s. After several blockbuster hits both on the screen and in record stores, Elfman established himself as a renegade personality in Hollywood’s otherwise conservative film scoring community. Even after his multiple Academy Award nominations in 1998, Elfman is considered by many to be an outsider in his own field. Extremely talented in musical theory and performing skills, Elfman is selftaught, a trait that distinguishes him from almost every other major composer of his era. Elfman states, “Film composition is a unique art with unique requirements. It is not the same as writing a symphony, something I’ve never professed to be able to do. Film music is written for no other reason than to accentuate the images on the screen, to underline the emotions of the characters, and hopefully, when we’re lucky, to help breathe life into a two-dimensional medium. A film score is not ‘pure music,’ and should be judged on its dramatic, emotional, and/or visually enhancing merits.” Regardless of his training, his skill in thematic expression was exhibited in full force in 1989, when his Grammy-winning score for ‘Batman’ became both a cult and popular classic. The same could be said of his work produced in the years that followed particularly when ‘Edward Scissorhands’ forever defined Elfman as a master of orchestral beauty. His most impressive display of raw talent was put into motion with ‘The Nightmare Before Christmas’

in 1993, for which he wrote the score and songs as well as performed the voices of multiple characters. While some fans were discouraged by Elfman’s move towards rock and minimalism in some of his late1990’s efforts, the dauntless composer continued to tread closely to the dark side of film scoring. Even in his dramatic efforts, Elfman often finds himself composing for films that are demented, quirky, and abnormal. The popularity of his theme-making talents has caused his services to be rendered for the title themes of such programs as ‘The Simpsons’, ‘My Favorite Martian’, and ‘Spy Kids’. Whatever your opinion is of his body of work, Elfman represents a much-needed wildcard in the film music industry. Even with much of his post-2000 work existing for mainstream projects such as ‘Spider-Man’, ‘Red Dragon’, and the musical ‘Chicago’, Elfman keeps his roots in the “Forbidden Zone.” His personality is one which contains an infectious smile and a clever wit, both influencing his musical ideas. Expecting the unexpected from Elfman is a refreshing change from the majority of composers in the digital era who, with the help of synthetic sampling, often repeat themselves more often than not. Elfman isn’t afraid to take a chance and have fun doing it. ©Filmtracks.com

RTÉ NATIONAL SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA 2011-2012 SEASON: I’LL SING YOU SOMETHING NEW…

THE BILLY FURY YEARS

Pascal Rophé

FRIDAY 17 FEBRUARY 8PM RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra Pascal Rophé conductor Berlioz Roman Carnival Overture Dutilleux Timbres, espace, mouvement Berlioz Symphonie fantastique, Op. 14 Berlioz certainly sang something new in his revolutionary Symphonie fantastique which shocked the music world. Nobody else can rival him in conveying the nervously impulsive inspiration of a young composer and the hopeless, unrequited passion that turns from vision to nightmare in a flash – genuinely fantastic! A similar sense of exhilaration courses through the electrifying Roman Carnival overture – a real firecracker. Van Gogh’s Starry Night is the inspiration for Dutilleux’s Timbres, espace, mouvement – a mysterious score that conjures up vivid combinations and juxtapositions of orchestral colour. MARCH HIGHLIGHT

FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE RUSSIAN VIOLINIST ALINA IBRAGIMOVA, IS DESCRIBED BY THE GUARDIAN AS ONE OF THE MOST TECHNICALLY GIFTED AND CHARISMATIC INSTRUMENTALISTS OF THE AGE.

©Sussie Ahlburg

F

eatured on the front cover of BBC Music Magazine earlier this year accompanied by the headline ‘The New Superstars’ Russian born violinist Alina Ibragimova has garnered a musical career that has music critics and audiences flocking to her performances. Her recent accolades include being shortlisted for the Gramophone Classical Music Award 2011 and for Gramophone Artist of the Year in 2010 as well as being the youngest person to win the Royal Philharmonic Society Emily Anderson Prize. She can also boast being a 2009 Classical Brit Awards Winner. The now UK resident is renowned for her classical and modern music performances and is described by The Guardian as ‘one of the most technically gifted and charismatic instrumentalists of the age”. 2011 has been an exciting year for the young violinist who was chosen by The UK Foreign Office to feature in a series of short films called ‘See Britain through my eyes’ in which individuals from both here and abroad reflect on their experiences of modern Britain, ahead of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Alina reflects on her move from Russia to Britain, as well as on what Britain’s cultural climate means for young musicians. She was also the highlight of this year’s Manchester International Festival which was staged in London for her collaboration with the cult US film-makers The Quay Brothers. Adding to the already glittering reviews for her performances, this year also saw Ibragimova tour with Vladimir Jurowski and the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, playing the Mendelssohn Violin Concerto at the Edinburgh International Festival and the San Sebastian Festival in Spain which also resulted in a recording for Hyperion. In an online interview for Tofaki.com Alina reveals her influences, finding her way in the professional music world and a little more about the girl behind the violin. “If you hadn’t chosen for music, what do you think you would do right now? I haven’t thought about that. Paint maybe... something to do with the arts in any case. What or who was your biggest influence as an artist? There have been many influences from my teachers,

from people I meet, whoever they may be. I think I change a little bit every time I meet someone new. What’s the hardest part about being a musician and what’s the best? I guess the hardest is being away a lot and the best is that my work is what I love the most. Some feel there is no need to record classical music any more, that it’s all been done before. What do you tell them? There will always be new projects, new ways of approaching classical music and if everybody is open enough to accept them, everything will be fine. What constitutes a good live performance in your opinion? What’s your approach to performing on stage? I think it’s to do with energies of the musicians, of the audiences and a general wish to create something very special. I don’t have an approach as such, other than try to care about every note I play and never use ‘autopilot’. What does the word “interpretation” mean to you? Interpretation to me is the most natural thing in the world. No two people can play a phrase in the same way therefore there is no point in trying consciously to do something different just for the sake of it. How do you balance the need to put your personal emotions into the music you play and the intentions of the composer? I try to follow the score as much as I can and work out composer’s intentions from the given clues. But there are times when one has to make his/her own decisions. After all it’s impossible to write everything on a five-line stave...” This interview appeared on www.tofaki.com and was written by Tobias Fischer, Editor-in-chief of tokafi and a cultural editor for Germany’s magazine “Beat“. Alina Ibragimova performs Saint – Saëns Violin Concerto no. 3 in B minor with Orchestre National du Capitole de Toulouse with Tugan Sokhiev, conductor on Monday 26 March 2012. Tickets from €30 on Tel: 01 417 00 00 or www.nch.ie (no booking fees)

Tonight we celebrate the golden age of the film musical brought to us by many of Hollywood’s leading ladies including Judy Garland, Lena Horne, Barbra Streisand and more. Featuring Dear Mr. Gable (You Made Me Love You), You’ll Never Know, The Sound of Music and San Francisco, all restored to their original film orchestrations by Maestro John Wilson. Many of these songs have never been publicly performed in these original arrangements, so it promises to be a very special night!

R. Strauss Don Juan, Op. 20 Mozart Violin Concerto No. 4 in D, K218 Mozart Sinfonia Concertante in E flat for violin and viola, K364 R. Strauss Reisefieber and Walzerszene from Intermezzo Another fascinating glimpse into Mozart with, by contrast, signature works from Richard Strauss who worshipped him. The often sparkling violin concerto reflects Mozart’s love of an instrument which he himself played. The great Sinfonia Concertante for violin and viola is a more mature work and one whose beauty goes deeper. Join Ronan for a night of high nostalgia as he, his big band and singers, relive the classic hits of arguably Ireland’s most popular singer ever - Joe Dolan.

THE NATIONAL CONCERT HALL PRESENTS

ORCHESTRE NATIONAL DU CAPITOLE DE TOULOUSE TUGAN SOKHIEV, CONDUCTOR ALINA IBRAGIMOVA, VIOLIN

Tugan Sokhiev

MONDAY 26 MARCH 8PM The National Concert Hall International Concert Series 2011/2012 Debussy Saint-Saëns Berlioz

Prélude à l’après midi d’un faune Violin Concerto No. 3 in B minor, Op. 61 Symphonie fantastique

This fine French orchestra will perform under their young Music Director, Tugan Sokhiev, who has considerably enhanced the ensemble’s reputation. The programme for this concert offers Hector Berlioz’s Symphonie fantastique, a piece that has since it’s first performance divided critics and audiences on its dynamic and dramatically themed orchestration not least with the arresting ‘March to the Scaffold’. However it is offset nicely by Debussy’s Prélude a l’après midi d’un faune, with its dream-like qualities inducing a lofty fantasy that’s almost other-worldly. Saint-Saëns’s violin concerto, when played by violinist Alina Ibragimova otherwise known as one of Britain’s ‘New Superstars’ as proclaimed on the front cover of BBC Music Magazine recently, will enchant Irish audiences with technical ability and sheer musical talent.

Angela Hewitt

FRIDAY 30 MARCH 8PM

SATURDAY 31 MARCH 7.30PM

RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra Angela Hewitt piano • Hannu Lintu conductor

A number of outstanding winners from Electric Ireland Feis Ceoil 2012 will be selected to perform at this Gala Showcase which will round off the 2012 Festival. The concert will feature choirs, orchestras, ensembles and soloists representing a variety of disciplines and genres.

Matthias Pintscher Towards Osiris Ravel Piano Concerto in G Lutosławski Concerto for Orchestra A whipcrack opens this Ravel piano concerto, music that is vivacious and sultry by turn and something of a homage to American Jazz – Ravel-style. Pintscher’s Towards Osiris evokes the Egyptian deity who ruled the underworld – often static, daring music with a searing trumpet solo at its heart. Lutosławski’s Concerto for Orchestra couldn’t be more different – a dazzling display piece designed to put an orchestra through its paces.

Please note start time.

APRIL HIGHLIGHT

A TALE OF LOVE AND WOE

W

hen you think of some of the greatest love stories every told, invariably the one that springs to mind is Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet, featuring all the fundamental components of the classic love story that we’ve come to recognise; lust, love, rebellion, denial, deceit, naivety and politics. Think too of Tristan and Isolde, Cleopatra and Mark Anthony, Orpheus and Eurydice, Scarlett O’Hara and Rhett Butler and even Elizabeth and Darcy... Need I say more? They are the romantic heroes and heroines whose stories have captured our hearts and minds. Such love has been the subject of books, theatre, popular culture, art and of course Opera down through the centuries. Madame Butterfly is one such story. An opera in three acts (originally two) by Italian composer Giaccomo Puccini it is based in part on the short story “Madame Butterfly” (1898) by John Luther Long and was dramatized by David Belasco. Some say it was also said to be based on the novel ‘Madame Chrysanthème’ (1887) by Pierre Loti. Today it is recognised as a staple of the standard operatic repertoire for companies around the world, ranking Number 8 in the Operabase list of the most-performed operas worldwide. Puccini’s heart-breaking score on the classic tale of unrequited love and death contains some of the most beautiful and memorable operatic music of all time. Set in the picturesque gardens of a Japanese villa outside the city of Nagasaki in the early 20th century, the story unfolds when we are introduced to US Naval officer Pinkerton, who lives on the hill with the 15 year old Japanese girl Cio-Cio San, otherwise known as ‘Butterfly’ because of her fragile beauty. So excited to be marrying the American lieutenant Cio-Cio San converts from Buddhism to Christianity much to the dismay of her uncle Bonze, the Buddhist priest. Upon hearing of this he orders all the guests at the wedding to leave at once and puts a curse on her. But Butterfly and Pinkerton get married anyway. Soon after the wedding Pinkerton leaves on duty. Three years pass and Butterfly is left waiting patiently for her beloved to return. Bridesmaid Suzuki however

is less hopeful and tries to convince Butterfly to start afresh but she won’t hear of it. Several attempts are made to persuade Butterfly to give up and start afresh but she’s determined to wait. The American Consul, ‘Sharpless’ delivers a letter from Pinkerton to Butterfly in which he is asked by Pinkerton to explain to Butterfly that he will be arriving back in Japan but not to her. But Sharpless doesn’t get a chance to finish reading the letter as Butterfly becomes ecstatic at the news of his return. So excited at the prospect of his return she reveals to Sharpless that she had Pinkerton’s son soon after he left but she never told him. Butterfly and Suzuki busy themselves getting ready for Pinkerton’s return, prettying themselves and decorating the house. The night he is due back the child and Suzuki fall asleep but Butterfly cannot. Come morning Butterfly finally falls asleep and Suzuki awakens. Sharpless and Pinkerton arrive at the house, along with Pinkerton’s new American wife, Kate. They have come for the child. But Pinkerton sees how Butterfly has decorated the house in his honour, realises he has made a huge mistake and admits that he cannot face her, so Susuki, Sharpless and Kate break the news to Butterfly. In her utter distress and sorrow she agrees to give up her child if Pinkerton will come and see her himself. In the meantime she begs forgiveness from the statue of Buddha, bids goodbye to her son and blindfolds him. She goes behind the screen, cuts herself with her father’s knife, staggering back to plant a kiss on her son before dying. Pinkerton rushes in but alas he is too late. The tragic love story that is Madame Butterfly will be performed on 18, 19 and 21 February as well as 7 April 2012 brought to you by Lyric Opera Productions and then again by Ellen Kent Productions. A long road has taken Tinariwen from the wild empty place of the Sahara to the concert stages of the world, bringing them countless accolades as well as the enduring respect of their own people, the nomadic Tuareg of the Sahara. ‘Their stark style of Tuareg desert rock, its bony, whiplash guitar, its rolling, loping momentum, its skeletal handclaps and cracked sandpaper vocals, its dusty-foot poetry and lyrical explorations of awareness, longing and revolt have metaphorically conquered the world.’ The Guardian

Elgar Cello Concerto in E minor, Op. 85 Brahms A German Requiem, Op. 45 ‘A real large work, and I think good and alive,’ said Elgar. One designed for the noble and rich sound of the cello, this concerto’s autumnal character is haunting, often passionately poignant. Gautier Capuçon is ready for the challenge.
