JUNE HIGHLIGHT

Bryan Ferry with Strings 6

NATIONAL CONCERT HALL BOX OFFICE TEL: 01 417 0000 • www.nch.ie

We can’t help saying this, but if there is any iconic rock/pop star you’d want to have strings attached to then it would be Bryan Ferry. He is indisputably one of rock music’s most enduring and delicately experimental proponents – and, of course, he last performed at the National Concert Hall a year ago, when he transformed his sleek solo and Roxy Music material into a night of jazzy sophistication. Over 12 months ago, it was Bryan Ferry flanked by wind instruments and percussion of all shapes and sizes. This year, a smartly attired orchestra (the RTÉ Concert Orchestra, no less) will surround the man in the sharply tailored suit. Long-term fans will know there is very little he can’t put his hand to and make a complete success out of it. While still a member of Roxy Music, Bryan Ferry started his solo career in 1973, and effectively kick started the growing trend for well-known pop and rock stars to perform cover versions of ‘standards’, favourites, guilty pleasures and other lesser-known songs. Albums such as These Foolish Things (1973) and Another Time, Another Place (1974) opened up new sonic areas for Roxy Music followers (and, perhaps, for those that reckoned Roxy Music were just a bit too weird for them). Yet Ferry knew his audience, and while he was stylishly slaying the world with Roxy Music via ground breaking albums such as For Your Pleasure (1973), Stranded (1973), Country Life (1974), and Avalon (1982), he was laying in the long grass with accomplished solo works such as Let’s Stick Together (1976), In Your Mind (1977), The Bride Stripped Bare (1978) and Boys and Girls (1985). Over the years, Ferry has astutely managed to lead several creative parallel lives – touring with reconvened versions of Roxy Music being but one of them – yet always seemed to have at the forefront his mind his solo output. And not only that – he realised that in

order to keep matters fresh both for him and his audience that reconfiguration, refurbishment and re-envisioning of his art was in order. These regular bouts of sonic spring cleaning have enabled Ferry to engage and experiment with his back catalogue in a way that very few (indeed, if any) of his contemporaries have. As previously noted, he was at the National Concert Hall last year with his latest album, The Jazz Age (2012), which featured 1920’s jazz style re-recordings of some of his best known songs (including Love Is The Drug, Slave To Love, Virginia Plain, Don’t Stop The Dance, This Is Tomorrow and Do The Strand). And still Ferry refuses to sit still (let alone rest on his laurels), which is why his forthcoming National Concert Hall orchestral shows look set to be something even more special. If last year’s Jazz Age outing was about refashioning his music in the styles of Louis Armstrong and Duke Ellington (with subtle nods to Charlie Parker and Ornette Coleman), then this year’s string-driven thing is how to go about invigorating familiar material with discreet artistic brushstrokes that add texture and depth. In many ways, such a suave approach to his body of work directly references a time when Ferry first entered pop music in the early 1970s – when Roxy Music would take aspects of previous genres of music and mould them into something else, something very new and different. Bryan Ferry has done this kind of thing before, and – wouldn’t you know it – the old smoothie is doing it yet again. By Tony Clayton-Lea, The Irish Times music critic Bryan Ferry with Strings will be performed as part of ESB Live 2014 at the National Concert Hall on June 18 and 19. Rodrigo y Gabriela Summer@NCH

TUESDAY 24 JUNE 8PM Acoustic rock maestros Rodrigo y Gabriela are back with their new album: 9 Dead Alive. The album was recorded and produced by Rodrigo and Gabriela at their studio in Ixtapa, Mexico. The album sees Rodrigo y Gabriela playing face to face, guitar versus guitar, bursting with melodic energy and rhythmic invention. It captures the warmth and spontaneity of two great musicians riffing and jamming together; perfectly distilled into nine new songs teeming with desire, elegance and gusto. Each of the songs on the album is a personal celebration of individuals who have passed on, but through their deeds and words still resonate in the 21st century. Going as far back as Eleanor of Acquitaine (1122 – 1204) to Viktor Frankl (1905 – 1997), and including a tribute to one of Rodrigo and Gabriela’s enduring touchstones – animals and nature. This diverse and fascinating list will strike a chord with anyone familiar with the duo’s passion for human rights, literature, history and philosophy. Rodrigo y Gabriela’s last album of all new music was 2009’s 11:11. Since then they have collaborated on the soundtracks to both Pirates Of The Caribbean: On Stranger Shores and Puss N’ Boots and visited Havana to record the Area 52 album with a Cuban orchestra. They have continued to tour the world, playing sell out shows last year at the Hollywood Bowl and Red Rocks, Colorado.

Monica Loughman Ballet presents Giselle

Saturday 28/Sunday 29 June 8PM The greatest of all Romantic ballets, Monica Loughman’s production of Marius Petipa’s classic is a tale of betrayal, supernatural spirits and love that transcends death. The role of Giselle will be danced by golden cross of the stage winner and principal of Lithuanian National Opera Ballet, Olga Konosenko. The coveted role of Myrtha, Queen of the Wilis, will be performed by Irish ballet artist, Leanne Sexton. Giselle is a peasant girl, who in Act One has fallen in love with Count Albrecht, who has led her to believe that he is a villager named Loys. Her discovery of his true identity has devastating consequences. Act two plunges the audience into an eerie moonlit forest haunted by the ethereal Wilis – vengeful spirits of young brides who died before their wedding day. It transformed the dance world when it was first performed in Paris in 1841 and remains at the centre of the classical repertory. Monica Loughman’s production uses Marius Petipa’s classic version, which was first staged in St Petersburg in 1884. Suitable for young and old alike, this classical ballet will inspire and enchant you like no other.

JULY HIGHLIGHT

“The ‘what if?’ approach to life has always been a part of my personal mythology, and it’s always been easy for me to fantasise a parallel existence.” David Bowie

The Art of the Song: David Bowie The Art of the Song: David Bowie is the first of an occasional series celebrating the most interesting writers in modern music. Devised by the National Concert Hall, residents of the Artist Writing Space project, and some of Ireland’s most acclaimed musicians, the evening will feature Lisa Hannigan, Richie Egan, Duke Special, Caoimhín Ó Raghallaigh, Ross Turner and Glenn Keating, who will disseminate Bowie’s songwriting genius. This genius stems from what Bowie references as his “schizoid attitude”, something that began in childhood. He was brought up in both the “slum area of Brixton”, and later in Yorkshire, “in the country on the farms”, with this early duality providing a creative touchstone. His self-titled debut in 1967 drew on old music hall references, and rock and roll stars like Elvis and Little Richard. Its roots were “all over the place”, and would be deemed by biographer David Buckley, as “the vinyl equivalent of the madwoman in the attic”.

H

e followed this up with his 1969 record that provided something of a template, where folk and prog rock wrestled each other, and the Major Tom character was introduced on Space Oddity, as well as long-time collaborators Mick Ronson on guitar and producer Tony Visconti, who would work intermittently with Bowie, right up to last year’s The Next Day. For Bowie, music “is a communicative blanket media”, and not simply “something to listen to”, and his musical DNA is panoptic; 1970’s The Man Who Sold the World brought in a harder rock sound, and 1971’s kaleidoscopic Hunky Dory provided the groundswell for 1972’s The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars which had a lighter, experimental atmosphere, and was based around his revelatory alter-ego Ziggy Stardust, whose influence Buckley says, “lasted longer and has been more creative than perhaps almost any other force within pop fandom”. The brooding Diamond Dogs (1974) saw Bowie moving towards soul, and on 1976’s Station to Station his Thin White Duke would emerge, where he became obsessed with various mythologies, and which provided ghostly traces of the influence of krautrock, and more abstract minimalist composition (influenced by collaborator Brian Eno) which featured on his late ‘70’s Berlin triptych: Low, Heroes and Lodger. Scary Monsters (and Super Creeps) (1980) filtered a New Romantic sensibility, with contributions from Robert Fripp and Pete Townshend, and 1983’s Let’s Dance paired him with Chic’s Nile Rodgers, who co-produced a record that was captivating, illustrating a gaiety that was also present on 1984’s Tonight. After experimental explorations with Tin Machine, he returned to working with Rodgers, releasing Black Tie White Noise in 1993,which expanded his interest in jazz and hip-hop, moving into the burgeoning jungle and drum ‘n’ bass scene, which he did for 1997’s Earthling, with 1999’s Hours referencing some of Bowie’s earlier work, but with a softer focus. 2002’s Heathen reunited him with Visconti, who called the record “a symphony”. A “deeply questioning” album, finished in the wake of the September 11th attacks, it recalls earlier themes, such as the disintegration of humanity, something that has been with Bowie from the beginning. Perhaps it is this anxiety that has been

Bowie’s greatest influence; it is because he loves humanity that he craves its survival. Reality (2003) was a response to the idea that “reality has become an abstract for so many people over the last 20 years.” It is a warm gem, a record that reaches back to Low, employing classic rock and ambient electronics. The Next Day expands this concept, but, as lead single “Where are we now?” suggests, to a more melancholy conclusion. It reminds us that this most innovative of artists constantly refers to the past; the record’s artwork adapts the iconic cover of Heroes to partly obliterate the photograph, suggesting a refusal of history. Bowie has addressed much through “illusionistic images”, but as the photographer Mick Rock recently said, “A lot of my images defined David, but I think of him as being magical and super-intelligent. He doesn’t always like being taken quite this seriously as a cultural figure, he is quite a light spirit and his main concern is his music.” In live performances (or even his video for Heroes), Bowie often appears lost in a radiant memory; as in thrall to the complicated nature of living as we all are. What is striking is that it reminds us that for all his achievements, visually, intellectually, and musically, he is still one of us. He retains a unique position in modern culture-who else could connect working with Giorgio Moroder, and Bing Crosby, or appear as The Elephant Man on Broadway, work with Martin Scorsese, voice a character on Spongebob Squarepants, produce the Scott Walker documentary 30 Century Man, play Jareth the Goblin King in Labyrinth, or Nikola Tesla in Christopher Nolan’s The Prestige? It goes back to his innate curiosity, and belief that though life is absurd, art can be transformative, and because “history is all revisionism, one makes one’s own history.” Siobhán Kane is an academic and arts journalist, and writes for publications such as The Irish Times, WIRE, and The Quietus. She runs the collective Young Hearts Run Free. The Art of the Song: David Bowie will be performed at the National Concert Hall on July 26 as part of Summer @NCH. Tickets: ¤25. Tinariwen Summer@NCH

Tinariwen

Tuesday 1 July 8PM The desert is a place of hardship and subtle beauty, a stark world that reveals its secrets slowly and carefully. For the renowned Saharan band Tinariwen, the desert is their home, their hypnotic and electrifying guitar rock reflecting the complex realities of their homebase in North West Africa. They are Tuareg, descended from nomadic people who have wandered the dunes for millennia, but the music of Tinariwen travels too, reverberating far from dusty plains of Mali. Due to instability in their Northern Mali homeland, Tinariwen recorded their latest album Emmaar in the California desert of Joshua Tree. Created in the region known for spaced-out rock ‘n’ roll and psychedelic cowboy folk, the album showcases a distinctly organic soulful feel. The group was joined by a group of esteemed American musicians including Red Hot Chili Peppers guitarist Josh Klinghoffer, Matt Sweeney of Chavez and poet Saul Williams. The album is a richly layered listen solidified by atmospheric textures and gritty hypnotic guitar-work. Their 2011 album Tassili, recorded in the Algerian desert won a Grammy Award for Best World music.

THE ART OF THE SONG: DAVID BOWIE SUMMER@NCH

Jape, Lisa Hannigan, Caoimhin O Raghallaigh, Duke Special

Saturday 26 July 8PM A new occasional series sees the National Concert Hall bring some of Ireland’s most exciting artists together to pay tribute to the great writers of modern music. This show sees Lisa Hannigan, Duke Special, Jape, Caoimhin O Raghallaigh and more pay tribute to the Thin White Duke. “As was the case with Miles Davis in jazz, Bowie has come not just to represent his innovations but to symbolize modern rock as an idiom in which literacy, art, fashion, style, sexual exploration and social commentary can be rolled into one.” Rolling Stone magazine From July 1969 when Space Oddity hit to UK Top Ten through to the flamboyant, androgynous alter ego Ziggy Stardust, spearheaded by the hit single Starman and the album The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars, David Bowie has created a modern canon of work marked by it’s constant re-invention and exploration. This went on to feature his landmark Berlin Trilogy of albums, his collaborations with Brian Eno and Lou Reed right through to blue-eyed soul of Fame and mainstream American success. He has recently released the unanimously acclaimed The Next Day. Emerging from the Hall’s Artist Writing Space project, this concert will see some of those Resident Artists, some of Dublin’s innovators and most acclaimed singers address the considerable work of David Bowie. Stay tuned for more information on the line-up for this special evening.

Do you recall, about five years ago, when Leonard Cohen returned from the wilderness to meet and sing for his public again? While the people who bought tickets for all of Cohen’s sold-out shows undoubtedly went to see him revisit his back catalogue, there was surely a percentage of concert goers who went sensing that it would be Cohen’s last gasp (so to speak), a revered man and lyricist/poet taking his final bow. As subsequent years have proven, those people were wrong - 79-year-old Leonard Cohen shows little sign of retiring. Which brings us to the Orquesta Buena Vista Social Club®, and their only Irish date this year in what is definitely their very final outing – or, as the musical ensemble outfit itself says, their “Adios Tour.” In many ways, you can’t blame this particular Social Club – whose musical history and legacy is rooted in an era long since gone, if not forgotten – from hanging up its collective touring boots. During the 1930s/’40s, in the Marianao district, Havana, Cuba, the Buena Vista Social Club was a popular meeting place for musicians and like-minded people, but with politics and economics playing their part, the club closed down. Fast forward almost 50 years, to the mid-1990s, when American roots music explorer Ry Cooder and Cuban musician Juan de Marcos Gonzalez teamed up with a number of the original Buena Vista Social Club members (some of whom, to put it politely, had fallen on hard times) to record music directly inspired by those glorious and, some would say, hedonistic days. What happened next was extraordinary: in 1997, the album Buena Vista Social Club™ – ostensibly a work signified by the description ‘world music’, which in itself implied a relatively niche audience – sold over five million copies and, the year after its release, won a Grammy Award. Within five years, not only was the record listed by Rolling Stone magazine as one of the 500 Greatest Albums Of All Time, but two of the ensemble group’s concerts were filmed by German director Wim

Wenders for a documentary (also titled Buena Vista Social Club) that received an Academy Award nomination. The resultant combined success of both album and documentary initiated a resurgence of interest in Latin American music in general and Cuban music specifically that remains very much in place. The ensemble’s original music director, Juan de Marcos Gonzalez, regarded the album/documentary artifacts as having served as “a symbol of the power of Cuban music.” British writer and historian Mike Gonzalez (no relation), meanwhile, noted that the music in particular caused people to imagine “timeless, sensual places where dreams and desires merged in a comfortable, evocative music.” The Adios Tour musical director/ band leader is trombonist Jesus Aguaje Ramos, and the line-up includes several original musicians from both album and documentary: singer/guitarist Eliades Ochoa, diva Omara Portuondo, trumpeter Guajiro Mirabal and laud virtuoso Barbarito Torres. They will be joined on stage by newer members, including tres player Papi Oviedo, pianist Rolando Luna; double bass player Pedro Pablo, percussionists Andres Coyao (congas), Filiberto Sánchez (timbales), Alberto ‘La Noche’ (bongos), a three-man trumpet section (led by Luis Allemany), and celebrated son singer, Carlos Calunga. So, yes, the bad news is that this really is the last time we’ll see such a wonderful gathering of Cuban musicians under the colourful banner title of Orquesta Buena Vista Social Club®. But there is good news for fans of these much loved ambassadors for Cuban music, and that is the music that has inspired them will, as always, live on. By Tony Clayton-Lea, The Irish Times music critic Orquesta Buena Vista Social Club® performs at the National Concert Hall on Saturday August 2nd. Tickets from ¤45 Tel 01 4170000 or online www.nch.ie

Gamelan Orchestra The Sultan of Yogyakarta, Sri Sultan Hamengkubuwono X, with the assistance of the Indonesian Embassy in Dublin London and the Provincial Government of Yogyakarta, Java, has gifted the National Concert Hall with a complete set of Javanese gamelan instruments. The gamelan, a set of bronze instruments which will accommodate up to thirty people, has been purpose-built by the Sultan’s gamelan artisans and work on the instruments. It is intended that the gamelan be widely used as part of the National Concert Hall’s education and outreach programme. Dr. Peter Moran, a composer and educator, will direct the new gamelan orchestra. Moran is currently director of the UCD Gamelan Group, which he helped establish last year. Gamelan Music Gamelan is Indonesia’s ancient classical music with a history stretching back almost a thousand years. It is an orchestra made up of tuned gongs and other bronze percussion instruments, with a handful of softer instruments such as the bamboo flute (suling), the two-stringed fiddle (rebab) and drums (kendhang). Unique tunings give each gamelan its own distinct personality, and it is common practice to give a gamelan a name and even celebrate its ‘birthday’ on the date when it was first played. Outside of the education and outreach programme, regular rehearsals will be held on Tuesday evenings, there will be two groups, one for players new to the gamelan and the other for existing gamelan players. For more information please contact education@nch.ie or 01 417 0077.
