SCHOOLS AND TEACHERS Enhancing musical experience, encouraging engagement, and supporting curriculum.

Quavers to Quadratics

Quavers to Quadratics: Music and Science Workshops Monday 14 January – Friday 18 January 2019, 9:45am – 2pm Various Rooms

Can we see sound? How high a note can you hear? What have music and science got in common? Quite a lot as it happens! We invite your school to collaborate with the National Concert Hall, University College Dublin, and Trinity College Dublin, in bringing this unique and innovative programme to Ireland’s young students. Quavers to Quadratics sees primary school children from 3rd-6th class play with ideas common to music and science. They are led in their play by undergraduate students from music and science, working in partnership with the children’s teachers. If your school takes-part in Quavers to Quadratics, undergraduate facilitators will work with each school teacher to co-teach a series of lessons in their class, as well as a day-long immersive workshop at the National Concert Hall, exploring the worlds of music and science.

nch.ie | 01 417 0000

5

The programme sequence is as follows: Teacher CPD workshop (22 November 2018) Teachers from participating schools attend a collaborative workshop with UCD and TCD undergraduate facilitators, working in partnership to co-plan the school-visit workshops. This is a vital part of the programme, so a teacher from each participating class must be able to attend. Please note this workshop will take place during the school day. School visits (dates tbc) Our facilitators will visit your school on 2 occasions before the visit to the NCH, including once before the Christmas break. These visits will be co-taught by the facilitator and class teacher. These sessions will introduce the programme contents to the participating children, and prepare for the NCH visit through an engaging programme of activities. NCH workshop (week beginning 14 January 2019) In a workshop at the NCH, lasting the full school day, participating groups and their teachers will join our facilitators in a fascinating exploration of the worlds of music and science. Moving through three rooms: Making Sound, Feeling Sound, and Seeing Sound, the children, teachers and facilitators will explore a range of experiments to bring physics and sound to life. The workshop concludes with an impromptu ensemble performance using the children’s own instruments, made during the morning from found materials provided by the NCH. Post-NCH visit (date tbc) Soon after the NCH workshop, our facilitators will return to your school for a final visit. This co-reflective session will help to embed the learning from the NCH workshop, and co-plan ways to continue the exploration of music and science in the classroom. This is a free but ticketed event for DEIS schools, early booking is advised. Please note you will need your school roll number when booking. Any remaining spaces will be opened to non-DEIS schools at 10am on 19 November 2018. Presented by the NCH, University College Dublin and Trinity College Dublin Schools of Education. Generously supported by Science Foundation Ireland and Dublin Port Company.

The Art of Tradition

The Art of Tradition: Inside Irish Music Through live performance and presentations, Dr. Martin Tourish of the band Altan brings to life the traditional music components of the Junior and Leaving Certificate courses, covering areas including the harp tradition, the song tradition, regional styles, tune-types, ornamentation, fusion and the debate around tradition and innovation. Martin presents the workshop at your school with fellow international performers. Students will receive a booklet with a wealth of material for guidance through the workshop, and revision before their final exam. For more information please see www.theartoftradition.ie

Percussion Discover the world of rhythm with a group percussion workshop. Our skilled facilitators will take you on a rhythmic journey, exploring the drumming traditions of West Africa, Brazil and the Caribbean. No previous experience is required and all instruments will be supplied.

Singing This workshop uses the one instrument that we all possess: the voice. Group singing is one of the easiest ways into music participation, and our facilitators are experts at getting everyone involved, joining in, and having a good time.

Song-writing Participants collaborate in the writing process and record their own newly-crafted piece, guided by experienced facilitators. They also perform for one another throughout, culminating in a performance event at the end of the workshop.

Introduction to Gamelan Experience the magical sound of the Javanese gamelan! This unique set of tuned percussion instruments are great for getting to play music in an ensemble, even with little or no previous experience. Due to the size and number of instruments, this workshop is currently only available at the National Concert Hall and workshops are limited to a maximum of 20 participants.

Improvisation Build confidence and explore your musical intuition through improvisation! Our experienced facilitators are equipped with a variety of games, exercises and approaches to get you performing and creating on the spot!
