SOUL AND SOUND OR OLD-FASHIONED GENIUS? B E N JA M I N G R O SV E N O R “Hats off, gentlemen -- a genius,’’ was Robert Schumann’s immortal line when he first reviewed a Chopin concert and recognised the exceptional quality of what he was hearing. There is nothing like a good quote to catch the public attention and 20-year-old British pianist Benjamin Grosvenor has had critics queuing up for nearly a decade to supply them. The Independent drooled: “Grosvenor is the most important British pianist to emerge in decades. The key is that he has his own sound, something rare even among wellestablished names. It is poetic and gently ironic, brilliant yet clear-minded, intelligent but not without humour… 6

he’s one in a million, several million. Great things should lie ahead.’’ The Times declared him as being “almost from another age’’. It’s a bit premature yet to acclaim Grosvenor as anything other than an exciting new emerging star of the keyboard, but there is plenty of evidence that he has the music mindset and the mental strength -- allied to brilliant technical ability -- to make a lasting impact on the music world. Grosvenor has been a young sensation ever since he won the piano section of the BBC Musician of the Year competition in 2004, aged eleven. “The real McCoy’’, a commentator declared that night, but prodigies who travel

through that dangerous terrain called fame have the habit of disappearing into the quick-sands of expectation. In his new world of sudden celebrity, he has chosen a road less travelled - one constructed of old-fashioned values, quiet introspection and personal conviction as to what truly great piano playing requires - particularly from him. The word ‘conviction’ is never far away when he discusses his playing. Whatever about the excitement among critics and music lovers and the level of praise heaped upon him by being chosen as the youngest ever musician to open a BBC Proms season, the young pianist himself remains distinctly cool and calm. He cannot, however, escape that quality on which many agree: he possesses a maturity of musical understanding not experienced in one so young since the emergence of Evgeny Kissin in the mid-1980s. Grosvenor admires many of today’s great players - fellow Englishman Stephen Hough being one of them - but it is to the past that Grosvenor points when he wants to name his “favourites’’. Tellingly, they include the Romanian Dinu Lipatti and Russian Vladimir Horowitz, pianists renowned for tonal colour. “I do have a pronounced interest in pianists of the past, both for the absolute merits of their performances and because one is exposed to potentially important musical and expressive musical tools that may have disappeared partially from the modern lexicon,’’ says Grosvenor. “Of course, you cannot give ‘sepia-tinted’ performances, as if seeking to re-invent a bygone era, but to ignore the recorded legacy of immensely talented musicians who worked with some of the great composers, would be to miss out on a rich part of our artistic history.” ‘We must keep in mind that our medium is sound, so projecting a performance to an audience rests on controlling and conjuring with sound, not ‘playing notes’ per se. Perhaps this is a quality that is sometimes

now lacking relative to the artists of yesteryear - with exceptions in both directions, of course. Also the sense of a pianists having their own sound, naturally. Part of the pianist’s celebrity seems to have been achieved mainly through the mainstream media more than the music one - an interesting development in the fame game where being different in whatever way or for whatever reason even being termed old-fashioned can make a huge difference to programmers. Strangely, perhaps, he has always avoided international piano competitions, believing they can be a corrupting influence by reducing classical music to a form of competitive sport. “In the past, competitions themselves have helped bring a number of great pianists to the fore. [However,] I do worry that they may have become a kind of worldwide industry and, as a result, many students at conservatories hone their playing to the competition ‘circuit’ that they expect to join shortly, and through which they hope to earn notice and a career.’’ Grosvenor is not short of awards in his brief but sensational career so far. Those bestowed so far include Gramophone’s Young Artist of the Year and Instrumental Award, a Classic Brits Critics Award’, UK Critics Circle Award for Exceptional Young Talent and a Diapason d’Or Jeune Talent Award. He has been featured in several TV documentaries including CNN’s Human to Hero series. The RTÉ Vanbrugh Quartet has attracted considerable public interest in venues around Ireland for its performances of Haydn’s The Seven Last Words of our Saviour on the Cross, Op. 51. On Good Friday 2013, it will perform the string quartet version of the orchestral original composed by Haydn in response to a commission for an orchestral work that would serve as an aid to meditation during the Good Friday religious services. Daly’s uncle, Eugene Daly a bagpiper with the Athlone Town Pipe Band, sailed on the fated voyage and played the soulful melody Erins Lament on deck as the ship departed Cobh in April 1912. He would be one of the few survivors to be plucked from the icy waters that tragic night. The Irish double bassist, (whose playing was recently described as ‘absolute perfection’ by Herbie Flowers) will be presenting the concert with his long time duo partner Duncan Honeybourne. Duncan will also be playing Aloys Fleischmann’s Sreath do Phiano (Suite for Piano) (1933) which he has recently recorded on EM records and which was last recorded over forty years ago by the great Irish pianist Charles Lynch. love music and when I’m happy I sing. When I’m sad I sing as well. What is singing, at the end of the day, but another form of expression?” So says Joseph Calleja, the Maltese tenor who is taking the opera world by storm. The thirty five year old has already sung twenty eight principal roles. He made his debut as the Duke of Mantua in Verdi’s Rigoletto at The Royal Opera House, Covent Garden at the age of twenty three. Soon afterwards, he was invited to sing at the Metropolitan in New York. Getting those first invitations is one thing but staying the course is another matter. So far, he is right on track. He has been asked back again and again and now he enjoys a hugely successful international career as both an opera singer and a concert performer. Last year he sang at the Last Night of the Proms and he has performed in the hugely popular Live at the Met series, where an opera is broadcast around the world. Only the best are asked to be in that. The classical world is teeming with talented tenors, so what makes this one so special? For starters, it’s the voice. This lyric tenor has a vibrato quality which creates a unique sound. The conductor Riccardo Chailly said that Calleja’s voice is ear-marked by a Golden age character, “a sound harking back to a quality I thought we had long lost.” It’s no great surprise to learn that his first musical hero was Mario Lanza but it took a while before he heard of his existence. To begin with, Joseph sang as a boy alto in school and church choirs. The monks taught them some Gregorian chant. “That really opened my ears. It was so different to the folk songs I was singing.” By the age of twelve, he developed a voracious appetite for all kinds of popular music but a visit to his uncle changed the course of his life. He put on the videotape of the 1951 film The Great Caruso with Mario Lanza and soon his nephew was converted. It was the most beautiful sound that he had

ever heard a man make. From that day on, he was burning with passion to sing like that. He wanted to do it straight away but he discovered that there are no short cuts. He began with piano lessons so he could learn to read music. He was in a hurry to play Nessun Dorma, so that he could sing it. A year later he auditioned for Paul Asciak, the retired Maltese tenor, who became a teacher. After a few bars of Be My Love, the teacher could hear that amidst the faults, this was a voice of unique beauty. It would take years of careful and disciplined teaching. They worked hard on the voice and in each lesson Asciak let his student listen to the great tenors of the past. Calleja devoted himself fully. The dedication paid off. There were private recitals, small debut roles and even a win in Placido Domingo’s Operalia competition. Much later he went on to star opposite Domingo in Simon Boccanegra. Puccini is his favourite composer but his repertoire includes many Verdi roles and he has sung the lead role in Offenbach’s infamously demanding Tales of Hoffman at the Met. Ovations followed because his voice is matched by his dramatic stage presence. But Calleja has not forgotten the spark which started it all. His latest CD - Be My Love – is his tribute to Mario Lanza. Even though he is close to the pinnacle of his career, he hasn’t become complacent. To this day, he works hard on his voice and his craft. The devotion is still there and no longer is he impatient. “A good voice is like a fine Bordeaux, you have to let it mature,” he says. And so it has. Maltese-born Joseph Calleja has become one of the most sought-after tenors on both sides of the Atlantic. hat sort of a group would call themselves Pink Martini? It’s a great name - sophisticated and intriguing and somewhere in there you get the feeling that they belong to another era. It conjures up a formal image of men in elegant evening suits and slinky women in satin dresses sashaying about and having serious fun. That’s just the tip of the iceberg. Anyone who has already been lucky enough to see Pink Martini perform in the National Concert Hall will struggle to define them. They are classical but also big band, vocal-led, world music and so much more. Quite simply, they are impossible to categorise. That’s the way they like it. But someone has to prepare you for the treat you’re going to encounter on May 4th, so here goes. This international old fashioned band, with lead singer China Forbes, is like nothing you’ve seen before. It’s hard to believe that there are only twelve of them on stage – their sound is big and often orchestral with lush strings, life-enhancing brass and percussion which will have you bursting to dance. It’s their energy that hits you first. The formally dressed musicians bound onto the stage and boy, do they deliver. Before they even begin to play a note, you can see the glint in their eyes. They’re all set to have a ball and so too will you. The minute they start, boom, you’re hit in the solar plexus with sheer delight. Hurray for this little orchestra, as they call themselves. They believe in entertaining through the power of their music, and what music. One minute it’s Ravel’s Bolero, the next it’s Que Sera Sera. It spans the globe, from Bossa Nova to Neapolitan. Some of the songs are old and some of their own compositions sound like they have been spawned from another century. (They may be quaint but they’re never creaky.) Many people will know their charming hit Sympathique, which is widely referred to as Je ne veux pas travailler – I don’t want to work. Who wouldn’t want to sing along to that? No wonder they play huge venues - like

the Hollywood Bowl and Carnegie Hall and tour the world. Yes, their songs are in several languages – English, French, Spanish, Arabic, Greek and Turkish –but don’t let that put you off. Such is their dynamism that you don’t have to be a linguist to get the gist. The passion is universal. There are only two types of music – good and bad – and this is exceedingly good stuff. Thomas Lauderdale, the pianist and bandleader and founder of Pink Martini explains their ethos. “The idea is to play and perform beautiful songs and to inspire people and comfort them. It’s to help them fall in love, get through a divorce, have a baby or just fill a vacuum.” When he was growing up in Indiana, he has happy memories of going to sleep to the sound of his parents entertaining downstairs. The music would waft up the stairs. “People don’t gather around the piano and sing anymore, “he says. That’s the feeling he’s trying to recreate. Lauderdale was getting on with his day job - working in politics in Portland, Oregon – when he was struck by the dull music at the fundraisers. Music should never be something in the background. A classically trained pianist, he felt the urge to perform and set about starting his own band. He said goodbye to his day job and followed his musical calling. That was back in 1994 and since then they have worked hard and soared. They say that if you follow your dreams, you will flourish. That’s exactly what Thomas Lauderdale did with Pink Martini. The remarkable Capuçon Brothers make a special appearance with French pianist Michel Dalberto to perform an all-French programme for this unique concert as part of the International Concert Series 2012/213. The chamber works by Fauré, the influential composer who bridged the Romantic and Modern era in French music, include his Nocturne No. 7 and 8, Sonata No. 1 for violin and piano, Sonata No. 2 for cello and piano and lastly his Piano Trio in D minor featuring all three musicians. Renaud Capuçon who plays the Guarneri del Gesù “Panette” (1737) that belonged to Isaac Stern, bought for him by the Banca Svizzera Italiana (BSI) is committed to performing chamber music. He has worked with some of the world’s leading musicians including Martha Argerich (piano), Vadim Repin (violin), Yuri Bashmet (viola), Daniel Barenboim (piano) as well as with his brother and regular collaborator Gautier Capucon. The brothers made their BBC Proms debut together in 2011, and were featured in two concerts firstly performing Beethoven’s Triple Concerto with Martha Argerich (piano), then with the Brahms Double Concerto. Both concerts were with the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France under Myung-Whun Chung, with whom they recorded the Brahms in 2007. Gautier who has won numerous prizes including the International André Navarra Prize, was also named ‘New Talent of the Year’ by Victoires de la Musique (the French equivalent of a Grammy) in 2001. “It would be hard to imagine greater advocates for Fauré than these superlative French musicians” The Times

Classic and vernacular collide in the final concert of the series. Boccherini’s huge output of chamber music included a hundred and forty-one string quintets (with prominent cello parts, for the composer was outstanding on the instrument) along with many string trios. Mozart’s Kegelstatt Trio on the other hand features two of his favourite instruments, viola and clarinet, and was written for himself and friends of his to play. Schubert’s last song, Der Hirt auf dem Felsen, is a celebrated, and unusual, extended song with obbligato clarinet, and Falla’s Seven Popular Spanish Folksongs have proved so popular with musicians and the public that there are as many recordings of it arranged for great instrumentalists as there are by great singers. Finally Dvorˇák’s most famous trio, the Dumky Trio, is an unusual masterpiece, a unique tour-de-force that bases all its six movements on a popular type of Ukrainian folk song; this work of powerful emotions should make a fitting end to the European Masterworks series.

One thousand Primary School Pupils representing their school communities from the four provinces of Ireland will perform a beautiful repertoire of songs - conducted by the three Musical Directors of the National Children’s Choir. The Repertoire for 2013 ranges from Handel to the modern day composer Bob Chilcott and includes traditional Irish songs, folk songs, songs from popular musicals and songs with a spiritual theme! You will enjoy a varied performance of choral arrangements from Ceol a Mhála to The Heavenly Aeroplane. Something for everyone! A choral extravaganza sung by approximately three hundred and forty children each night following in the footsteps of more than one hundred thousand children who have performed in the National Children’s Choir since its inception in 1985.

Dublin and to produce their very own piece to take home. All teaching staff in Artworks pottery studio are qualified teachers and /or graduates of the NCAD (National College of Art and Design) Ireland. Slavek will transform the John Field Room into a magical rainforest, where you can wander freely and explore a variety of sights, feelings and sounds. Gentle interludes of classical music will add even more wonder to the experience. Visitors to Ama-Zone are asked to be present for the start of the session, for a brief welcome and introduction, but then may wander in and out as they please. MUSIC IN HEALTHCARE As part of our portfolio of work in the healthcare sector, we have two very exciting programmes currently running: KIDS CLASSICS Since its inception in 2008, this highly successful initiative has provided interactive workshops to children in hospitals and hospital schools in Dublin, Waterford and Cork. Led by cellist Gráinne Hope and her team of musicians this project aims to give children a chance to interact with music and provide a sense of well-being. This programme is kindly supported by the Community Foundation for Ireland and the National Concert Hall.

The concert marks the fourth anniversary of this inspiring group of musicians and is a Bealtaine Festival 2013 event, celebrating creativity as we age.

HEALTH AND HARMONY In October 2012 the National Concert Hall launched a one year project in collaboration with The Alzheimer Society of Ireland called Health and Harmony. BY CAR The National Concert Hall is located in the centre of the city beside St. Stephen’s Green. Please be aware that there is a one-way system in place on St Stephen’s Green so please follow the instructions below.

BY LUAS Harcourt Street is within five minutes’ walk of the National Concert Hall and runs regularly: every five minutes at busy periods and every fifteen minutes at less busy periods

DUBLIN BIKES Why not keep it green and use one of the Dublin Bikes available at various points around the city. There is a Dublin Bikes station directly outside The National Concert Hall. Follow the signs to the City Centre From O’Connell Street, head south over the River Liffey, down D’Olier Street, past Trinity College onto Nassau Street From Nassau Street, take a right turn onto Kildare Street This will lead you onto St. Stephen’s Green. Continue down towards Baggot Street, take the first right onto Pembroke Street, straight past Fitzwilliam Square until you come to a set of traffic lights Turn right onto Leeson Street and at the next set of traffic lights take the left onto Earlsfort Terrace where The National Concert Hall is situated on the right-hand side

CAR PARKING FACILITIES Limited parking is available in the grounds of the National Concert Hall.
