International Concert Series 18/19

International Concert Series 2018/2019

Fáilte/Welcome I am delighted to present the International Concert Series for 2018/19, the National Concert Hall’s flagship classical music season. For the opening concert of the series we welcome the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra to Ireland for the first time, bringing an all Leonard Bernstein programme in celebration of the centenary of the birth of the great American composer on August 25th 1918. Coming direct from the BBC Proms in London, the orchestra will be conducted by its music director Marin Alsop, a protégée of Bernstein and one of his most passionate advocates. Along with music from Bernstein’s stage works West Side Story and On the Town, Nicola Benedetti is violin soloist in the rarely heard Serenade after Plato’s Symposium. Following the success in previous seasons of superb choirs from the UK such as The Sixteen and The Tallis Scholars, the second concert in this year’s series brings another exceptional English vocal ensemble, Andrew Carwood’s The Cardinall’s Musick. Taking its name from the 16th-century cardinal, Thomas Wolsey, not surprisingly the group is renowned for its performance of English Renaissance music. However, its repertoire embraces a wide range of styles and periods and for its NCH debut the group will perform a programme from the 16th and 21st centuries under the title ‘The Music Makers’. Kremerata Baltica, the chamber group founded and directed by the celebrated Latvian violinist Gidon Kremer are the official cultural ambassadors for the three Baltic States Latvia, Estonia and Lithuania, as they celebrate the centenaries of their independence this year. Both Kremer and his orchestra are known for their imaginative and creative programmes and for their first visit to the NCH they have chosen ‘After Schubert’, which frames Kremer’s favourite composer with fascinating contemporary works. Making its third appearance in the ICS, the peerless Emerson String Quartet celebrated its 40th birthday last year and has had only one change of personnel in that time. By the quartet’s own admission the arrival of Paul Watkins as cellist in 2013 had a profound effect, bringing a palpable joy to a new collaborative process and infusing the quartet with an even warmer and richer tone. For this visit the quartet plays masterpieces by Mozart, Shostakovich and Dvořák. The extraordinary ‘orchestra of voices’ that is the Californian choral group Chanticleer is celebrating its 40th birthday in 2019 and makes a welcome return to the NCH as part of a special European tour. Its programme Then and There, Here and Now includes some of the groups favourite works from the last four decades, demonstrating the seemless virtuosity in ensemble singing for which it has become famous. Pianist Paul Lewis is now recognised as one of the great exponents of the classical and German romantic canon, a role inherited from his mentor Alfred Brendel. His programme features Haydn and Brahms as well as Beethoven’s Diabelli Variations, one of the great masterpieces of the piano repertoire. Amongst the elite of violinists today Nikolaj Znaider’s first NCH recital with pianist Robert Kulek made a big impression a couple of seasons ago. Since heard in concerto and as conductor with the RTÉ NSO last autumn, he returns with Robert Kulek for another recital programme that includes three major sonatas by Beethoven, Brahms and Prokofiev.

International Concert Series 2018/2019

I know the pianist and conductor Sir András Schiff has many fans here so I am delighted that he is returning after a gap of nearly 8 years in a programme of Brahms and Schumann as part of a tour he is undertaking with the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment. Also featuring as soloist and conductor is the great violinist Pinchas Zukerman, returning with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. Mozart’s Violin Concerto No. 5 will be sandwiched by two masterpieces of English music, Elgar’s Enigma Variations and Vaughan Williams Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis. Two of our own leading international artists – mezzo-soprano Tara Erraught and pianist John O’Conor gave a joint recital in Washington’s Kennedy Center earlier this year and a repeat performance provides the perfect opportunity for Tara to make her debut recital appearance in the International Concert Series. The dazzling virtuoso pianist Marc-André Hamelin brings one of his characteristically imaginative programmes, coupling the familiar (Schumann and Chopin) with the rarely-played. Included in the latter is a set of six arrangements by Alexis Weissenberg of songs by the French popular singer-songwriter Charles Trenet, which Hamelin transcribed from the original 1950s recording. Making its debut at the NCH, is one of the world’s most distinguished chamber music ensembles sponsored by a major symphony orchestra, Boston Symphony Chamber Players. Made up of principal players from the Boston Symphony Orchestra, one of America’s oldest and most distinguished ensembles it brings an attractive programme of chamber music for strings and wind, culminating in Beethoven’s Septet. To round off the season the London Symphony Orchestra returns for the second visit in its five year residency at the NCH. This second concert of the cycle is with one of the LSO’s Principal Guest conductors, Gianandrea Noseda and includes no less than three distinguished soloists: the orchestra’s principal trumpet Philip Cobb, the French viola player Antoine Tamestit (in Berlioz’s unique Harold in Italy) and a Dublin concerto debut by pianist Daniil Trifonov, following his exceptional recital here last December. The series as a whole is a judicious mix of familiar artists and those appearing in the season for the first time. I hope you find plenty to entice you. As an added incentive, there are a number of concert packages available with savings of up to 15% on full season subscriptions and 20% for NCH Season Friends, Friends and Patrons. Our thanks to our media partner, The Irish Times, for their support and I look forward with you to many wonderful evenings of great music throughout the season.
