ALICE FARNHAM
Flying the Flag for Female Conductors Passionate about training the next generation, British conductor Alice Farnham is co-founder and artistic director of Women Conductors with the Royal Philharmonic Society – a ground-breaking programme to encourage women into conducting. We are delighted to announce that Alice will be bringing her expertise to the National Concert Hall when she leads an exciting programme entitled the Female Conductor Programme, which sees her guide six novice conductors through ten months of workshops and rehearsals, culminating in a showcase concert at the NCH in summer 2018. The programme is generously supported by Grant Thornton. We asked her a few questions about what it takes to be a female conductor in today’s world. How did you decide to become a conductor and what barriers did you overcome? I came to conducting initially through the church music route, having been an organ scholar at Oxford University and needing to conduct the choir. Initially the barriers were mostly of my own making in that I just didn’t believe I could do it. Eventually I found some inner confidence and then things started to come into place, and I didn’t find I had the same performance anxiety I had with playing.
1
What is a typical day in the life of Alice Farnham? There’s no typical day really. In periods where I’m rehearsing an opera or ballet then it’s normally six hours of rehearsing with a couple of hours at least of score preparation. Other periods when I’m preparing scores then I try (not always succeeding) to get up early and study scores all morning, and do other work related things like emails and meetings and teaching in the afternoon. Other days I seem to spend the whole time on planes and at airports. The iPad Pro is very useful for score studying when on the move. What skills and characteristics do you need to succeed in the music industry? Obviously being an excellent musician, but you have to want to do it more than anything else, to the extent almost that there’s no choice. And not to be afraid of failing. Combine that with optimism, determination and imagination. Be sincere but not afraid to be an actor as well – especially when a bit nervous. You are co-founder and artistic director of Women Conductors with the Royal Philharmonic Society – what does this hope to achieve? To encourage more women young and old into the conducting profession. It has already had results. You can read more about the project on http://royalphilharmonicsociety.org.uk/performers/ women_conductors

FEATURE “…you have to want to do it more than anything else, to the extent almost that there’s no choice. And not to be afraid of failing.”
What has been the highlight of your career to date? So many, but probably being invited by Valery Gergiev to conduct The Rape of Lucretia at the Mariinsky Theatre, St. Petersburg as well as conducting Maxwell-Davies’ Kommilitonen and Britten’s Paul Bunyan with the Welsh National Youth Opera at the Wales Millennium Centre. Tell us something we don’t know about you? I play in a netball team in north London. Perhaps I’m the only conductor in a netball team.
nch.ie
What’s next for Alice Farnham? In 2017 I will be spending a lot of time in Scandinavia conducting Satyagraha and Turandot with the Folkoperan in Stockholm. I will also be leading a workshop on women conductors at the Royal Philharmonic Society with the Hallé Orchestra in Manchester and I very much look forward to leading the Female Conductor Programme in Dublin. The NCH Female Conductor Programme, sponsored by Grant Thornton, will be led by acclaimed conductor Alice Farnham. Further details available on www.nch.ie/online/ education

LAURIE ANDERSON It’s difficult to know where to start. How exactly do you begin to describe someone whose inventive endeavors set out a recognisable path for other people to follow? Always a pioneer, never a settler? Perhaps that’s as good a place to start as any.
15
nch.ie
FEATURE Born in Glen Ellyn, Illinois, USA, on June 5, 1947, Laurie Anderson began as she meant to continue – her first performance art piece, in 1969, was a symphony played on car horns. The following decade was spent mostly in New York City, where she blended performance art with avant-garde recordings. By 1981, Anderson’s music (which wasn’t so much ‘avant-garde’ as simply ahead of its time) would find a much wider audience when her eight-minute electronic art-pop ‘song’, O Superman, became a surprise hit in parts of Europe and the US. Drawing from influences that range from Jules Massenet’s 1885 opera, Le Cid, Greek historian Herodotus, the Chinese classic text, Tao Te Ching, as well as issues that reference communication, politics and technology, O Superman extracted Anderson out of the counter-culture/ avant-garde scene and positioned her at the entrance of a new departure gate. Her fresh, different audience (largely appreciative, but perhaps unused to experimentation with form and structure) waited patiently; they would become accustomed to Anderson’s modus operandi of wanting more to conjure a reaction than to explain anything in broader terms. “I don’t like things to be confused,” she told Smithsonian Magazine in 2008, “but I like them to be multifaceted.” That she decided to embrace new opportunities provided by her commercial success without deviating from or compromising her art isn’t a surprise. One of the wonderful aspects about Laurie Anderson’s work is her determination to remain true to it.
nch.ie
She is many things to quite a few people: musician, visual artist, film director, contemporary philosopher, performance artist, inventor. Yet she has said that she is fundamentally an anthropologist – a creative thinker that studies the source, progress and multiplicities of human beings and the politicised societies in which they live. Such a self-description makes perfect sense when taking into consideration her work, but some people either underplay or ignore two constituent features (neither of which, in fairness, are usually associated with the avant-garde) that raise her art even higher: a playful sense of humour and an amplified sense of warmth.
One of the wonderful aspects about Laurie Anderson’s work is her determination to remain true to it. Anderson’s three-day residency, The Language of the Future, will feature three distinct concerts, but what any of them comprise won’t be fully explained or understood until you’re sitting in the auditorium looking at her on stage with her surround-sound store of communication tools. Vivid stories? The power of language? How words can assist, alleviate, alienate, anger? Like we said, it’s difficult to know. Two things, however, are certain: Laurie Anderson has never been a settler. Laurie Anderson has always been a pioneer. By Tony Clayton-Lea, music writer for The Irish Times. The Language of the Future, a triptych of new and exclusive performances by Laurie Anderson, takes place Saturday May 13, Sunday May 14, and Monday May 15 as part of the NCH Perspectives Series.

JOYCE DIDONATO One of the finest singers of our time on being half Irish, world peace, living in the moment and chocolate soufflés. Joyce performs ‘In War and Peace’, an ambitious project exploring the harmonising potential of music, at the NCH in June.
Tell us why you like coming to Ireland? Born Joyce Flaherty with a mother who was a McGlinchy I’m finally able to realise my dream (and my family’s) to return to the homeland! Having been to Dublin only once, it did feel like a homecoming of sorts, and the embrace of the people was something I will never, ever forget. Where did the concept for ‘In War and Peace’ come from? From the world around me and the desire to use the most powerful tool I personally know – ART – to reach out to people, to empower them, and to unite us. This particular project purposefully uses Baroque music composed centuries ago, and as all art does, it holds a mirror up to ourselves, showing both our dark and light sides. I want to present these and remind my fellow citizens of the world in 2017 that we have a choice in which of these sides of ourselves we nurture. I want to remind myself, perhaps most of all, that none of us are powerless. What can audiences expect from your upcoming performance at the NCH? They can expect that I will bring everything I possess within myself to give them an emotional and provocative evening not only of great music, but it will hopefully be an evening of community and a deeply felt experience.

You’re one of opera’s most outspoken and impassioned personalities, can music change the world? Not only can it, but it does. And radically so. It certainly has changed my world, and I’m incredibly fortunate that many fans and friends continually share with me how music has changed their world dramatically, and for the better. Will it bring world peace in 2017? Well, if it brings peace to one person’s life, then how can that possibly not be a wondrous thing? Tell us something we don’t already know about Joyce DiDonato I’m *this close* to being able to do a handstand without any wall or spotter. I also make a mean chocolate soufflé. Who has been the biggest influence on your career to date? I cannot possibly single one person out, for I’ve had hugely influential people (both in a positive and negative way) all along. If pushed for the answer, I think I would have to say the public. They are always the one thing that motivates me to give my best, most committed and truthful performance. What is your hope for the future? Well, there is that “world peace” thing … But aside from that? I am really that type of person that aims to be present

right here and right now, and experience has taught me that if I can conquer THIS moment, the future always works itself out. What advice would you give to young singers today? To embrace the incredible journey – which will be unbearably difficult at times, and wildly euphoric at other times. If they can understand and embrace that they will be learning about life in the richest, most

challenging ways, somehow it will make the journey all the richer for them. What’s next for Joyce DiDonato? At present? More emails, and hours at the piano immersed in Les Troyens … more long term? I hope an avalanche of wonderful adventures!
