MACY GRAY The voice is unmistakable – rugged, yes, but imbued with the level of experience that is usually the preserve of heritage blues singers. Alongside the voice and the blues there is the funk and the soul and the jazz, so you could say with certainty that Gray is the full package. It was always thus. Born Natalie McIntrye, September 6, 1967, in Canton, Ohio, she undertook piano lessons at the age of seven. It wasn’t until about ten years later, however, that the songwriting bug bit hard. Attending the University of Southern California – where she studied scriptwriting – Gray inadvertently ended up singing on a batch of demo songs originally intended for someone else. As she recalls it, her voice naturally morphed into something uniquely identifiable, but, unusually, she didn’t start until she was in her early 20s. “I always had a kind of funny voice,” she informed The Guardian newspaper several years ago,”and it never occurred to me that I could sing… I started forming bands and writing songs, and I really got into it. Then a friend of mine asked me to be a singer in his jazz band… He gave me jazz CDs. I studied all these different singers and taught myself how to sing for a gig. I was really awkward, just doing it for fun...” Fun turned serious when Gray signed to a major record label in 1998. Within a year, she had made the life-changing transition from unknown to ubiquitous

via the success of her debut album, On How Life Is. The record became a worldwide smash hit (selling seven million copies), something that was assisted by its most notable hit single, I Try. More was to come in the form of a Grammy ® for the song, which nabbed Gray the Best Female Pop Vocal Performance award. Subsequent albums followed: The Id (2001), The Trouble With Being Myself (2003), Big (2007) and The Sellout (2010), each of which were interspersed with acting (Training Day, Scary Movie 3)

and launching a fashion label. In 2012, she paid heartfelt tribute (or, in her own words, “a love letter”) to her early funk/ soul roots by covering in its entirety Stevie Wonder’s 1972 album, Talking Book. Although a creative highpoint in Gray’s career (New Yorker magazine described her interpretive fortitude as “marvelous, expansive, eccentric…”), it is curiously, unjustifiably overlooked. Not that she should be overly concerned – her most recent album, Stripped (2016), sees her once more referencing the music that first

inspired her – jazz. Across 50 minutes, reconditioned early songs, new songs and covers (including a version of Metallica’s Nothing Else Matters), Gray delivers a collection that All About Jazz regarded as “a throwback to the early days when jazz singers were not pretentious, but had to rely on their innate talent to carry the tune with raw emotion and sensual grace.” Raw emotion and sensual grace? File those words next to Macy Gray. By Tony Clayton-Lea Macy Gray performs Sunday 2 July as part of the NCH Summer Concert Series.

MAGNETIC FIELDS

FEATURE Don’t ask Stephin Merritt where he comes from. He’s never had a straight-forward answer, but the opening song on his latest album, 50 Song Memoir, attempts to tell the tale. It begins in Saint Thomas in the Virgin Islands, where “beatniks bonk on a boat, afloat in rum.” It moves to Yonkers, north of the Bronx, and on to Baden-Baden in the old West Germany. It’s a journey that serves as a foundation for a musical career which has been just as personal, various and unpredictable as Merritt’s early years. 50 Song Memoir is the eleventh album by the Magnetic Fields, the shifting band of musicians in which Merritt is the only constant presence. It charts, year-by-year, Merritt’s nomadic, spiritually confused upbringing, his exploratory years as a young gay man in New York, and his career as a beloved musician settling into middle-age. The first section of the record deals with Merritt’s childhood, when his mother was given to having her head turned by self-proclaimed gurus and religious teachers, often travelling great distances to be close to them. “My mama ain’t no loony,” Merritt sings, “But she likes joining cults.” It’s the kind of sharp, telling lyric which Merritt does so well — funny and evocative, barbed but never cruel. Merritt concludes the song with a line about how his mother believes in everything, but “draws the line at crystal healing.” It almost feels affectionate, a tender moment of hard-won understanding. Merritt has said that 50 Song Memoir is like “a variety show.” The songs are dressed up in the styles of the times and the places they are about. This is particularly powerful during the tracks
nch.ie
covering Merritt’s teenage years, when you can hear the rapid and sincere shifts in his musical interests: 1978 is wildly out-of-tune, a punk band struggling to be born in Virginia commune; 1981’s How To Play The Synthesiser is Kraftwerk in microcosm; 1984’s Danceteria, dedicated to the legendary New York nightclub, is a rickety electro track.
Merritt has said that 50 Song Memoir is like “a variety show.” The songs are dressed up in the styles of the times and the places they are about. Many of these songs deal with deeply personal moments in Merritt’s life, and the frankness is surprising coming from a performer much more accustomed to masks and misdirection. Less surprising, though just as moving, is Be True To Your Bar, a woozy, sing-along paean to Dick’s Bar, the now-shuttered gay bar in Manhattan’s East Village where Merritt wrote most of his best-known work, 69 Love Songs. This mingling of contrasting styles and voices is what Merritt does best. His blend of humour and candour, lightness and depth, irony and warmth, is characteristic of a unique take on the art of song-writing. Whether he’s writing epic albums or film soundtracks, musicals or advertising jingles, Merritt’s deep, sardonic voice remains instantly recognisable. He’s always been an outsider, an inveterate shape-shifter with a keen observational eye, but with 50 Song Memoir it feels like we’re closer to the real Stephin Merritt than ever before. By Ian Maleney. Magnetic Fields 50 Song Memoir will be performed August 28 and 29 as part of the NCH Perspectives Series.

THE MAGIC OF MIRGA When Mirga Gražinyte˙-Tyla was named as the new music director of the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra early last year, two major questions arose for music lovers there – who was she and how did she pronounce her name? The first question was easy, and Mirga’s status as being one of the few really exciting women conductors in the world to have emerged in the past five years was instantly documented in the media. The second question was not so straightforward. After a lot of phonetic spelling attempts in newspapers – and even a clatter of postings on Google – the lady herself took to YouTube with the official version, which didn’t exactly trip off the tongue either. This established the simple fact that Mirga is destined to be simply ‘Meerga’ from now on. It’s much easier for everyone. So who is Mirga Gražinyte˙ -Tyla ? She is a 30-year old Lithuanian musician who had been making headlines in Europe and America as a pixie-like vivacious conductor who had the ability to get into the heart and soul of her orchestras and produce really rhythmic results. Here is what Mirga has to say on her career so far: What is your family background? “Music is definitely in my blood. My great uncle was an organist in the Lithuanian capital of Vilnius, my great aunt was a composer and both my parents tried to steer me away from
21
music. They wanted me to have a ‘real profession’, unlike them. My grandmother, who was a violinist in the symphony orchestra once said to me ‘You, know, my dear,’ conducting is not really a profession for a lady.” What are your music influences? “Having music instruments in the family were always going to be a major influence, but it was the great singing tradition in Lithuania that occupied my early ambition to become a choral conductor. At the time of Soviet occupation, we were moulded by a very inflexible education system, so when I left to study in Poland, this proved an incredible liberation for me.” What is your conducting style? “Although I love listening to the music of great conductors such as Von Karajan and Furtwangler, I do not favour the road of rigid discipline and prefer a collaborative approach with the musicians as much as possible. I think the responsibility of orchestra and conductor is to share the music in our own close circle so as to achieve the most affecting result for the ‘bigger circle’ – the audience and listeners. It is a partnership style.”

“If my appointment [at Birmingham] helps in any way to improve gender equality in the music business, then I will be very pleased.”
Does being a woman in a man’s world concern you? “When I am in front of an orchestra, the question of being a woman disappears – we’re all just human beings in love with music. I do remember a couple of occasions when issues arose. If my appointment [at Birmingham] helps in any way to improve gender equality in the music business, then I will be very pleased.”
What is your view on politics? “I am a passionate supporter of the European project, like most people in Lithuania. When I was touring the continent as a girl, singing in choral concerts, we would sometimes spend 20 hours waiting at the border for our passports to be stamped. It’s crazy some countries want to go back to that.” By Dick O’Riordan, classical music columnist with The Sunday Business Post The City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, under Mirga Gražinyte˙ -Tyla, perform the first concert of the NCH International Concert Series 2017/2018 on August 31.
