The Truth about CFLs and Mercury

It’s true that Compact Fluorescent Lightbulbs (CFLs) do contain mercury, but the plain reality is that the amount of mercury contained in the average CFL is miniscule and is less than other items probably already found in your home - 4-5 milligrams compared to about 500 for a typical glass fever thermometer, for example. The fact is that CFLs release no mercury when they are on in your home; they are efficient and environmentally friendly when used safely and responsibly. CFLs will help you NMH156 _9.75x12.75_ad 7/26/11 3:48reduce PM Page 1the need for cut your monthly electricity bill and will help electricity production. See page 5 for the story.

In the middle of the hottest silver market in history, we found a small hoard. One hundred years ago, you’d find these classic American Morgan Silver Dollars in the vest pockets and purses of riverboat gamblers, socialites, wealthy bankers and Southern Belles. Yet nearly half the entire mintage was melted in 1918 by the United States government. More suffered a similar fate over the years, while countless others are in private collections.

Today Morgans are hard to find. “O” Morgans are even harder to find.

mint mark. Can you find it on the coin to the right? Americans love Morgans. At 26.7 grams and in 90% pure silver, it’s easy to see why. They’re incredibly popular—one of the most collected of all United States coins.

The silver market is red-hot but we managed to find a small hoard.

Call it good luck or good fortune, we have a very small quantity of these unique, historic and scarce New Orleans Mint Silver “O” Morgans.

These massive silver coins from the historic New Orleans Mint are almost never seen in public.

Few people ever have the pleasure of holding a silver coin of this significance in their hands.

Few people have even heard of the New Orleans Mint. It shut its doors in 1909, but not before striking its share of big, beautiful Morgan Silver Dollars.

You can. If you act right away! But your window of opportunity is closing rapidly.

They’re known as New Orleans Mint Morgans. With the big “O”

Don’t stand up for yourself; do it for the loved ones in your life

My wife is constantly reminding our two children to “listen to your body.” That’s pretty sound advice. I wish I had been doing that back in 2005 when hurricanes Katrina and Rita struck within a few weeks of each other. While those two twisted sisters upended the lives of just about everyone across our region, for me in my role as a cooperative communicator it meant 10 consecutive weeks of road-tripping from one end of the state to the other interviewing linemen, supervisors, managers and members, slogging through swamps and mosquito-infested floodwaters to get the story of the recovery. I was feverishly and frantically trying everything I could do – often futilely – to convince the power-hungry public that the thousands of men who came from more than 20 states to help us rebuild our systems were actually working 16-hour days and not, I dunno, standing around enjoying a clambake. But it also meant many hours perched in front of a computer screen cranking out news releases and writing magazine stories, producing print and radio ads, fielding phone calls from media outlets, creating slide shows, culling photos, editing video and otherwise assisting our state’s electric cooperative system any way I could. Though there times the backs of my legs were cramping and screaming at me to hoist my fanny up and take a walk, I stubbornly plowed ahead for hours at a time without taking a break. It didn’t help that, in addition to all that extra workload, for almost a year afterward I had to make quite a few plane trips to various regions of the country to tell

Viewpoint

by Billy Gibson Director of Communications Association of Louisiana Electric Cooperatives

other interested cooperative communities the story of how we survived. Well, it wasn’t long before I developed a deep-vein thrombosis (DVT) and thus became one of the 400,000 Americans diagnosed with the life-threatening condition each year. A DVT is a blood clot that’s lodged inside a large vein that has the potential to break loose and move into the heart and/or lungs. Not only did tennis star Serena Williams put this malady on the national scene when she developed a DVT last spring, but DVTs were back in the news just recently when a video gamer spending too much time sitting in front of his Xbox recently died from the condition. I’m not sure if the rate of DVT occurrence is on the decline or incline, but I know many more people are becoming conscious of the harmful effects, both long term and short term, of simply being too sedentary throughout the day both at work and at home. Helping to raise the awareness of the risks of a sedentary workplace routine is the Pennington Biomedical Research Center based in Baton Rouge. Last spring, the Center released the result of a large study that analyzed the lifestyles of more than 17,000 men and women over 13 years. Scientists concluded that those who sat at a desk for most of an

eight-hour day were 54 percent more likely to die of a heart attack. Though other researchers have made similar conclusions, this study drilled deeper and determined that sitting behind a desk all day is an independent risk factor for heart disease. In other words, these results applied to smokers as well as non-smokers, to those who exercised and those who didn’t. As to the reason why, researchers suspect the answer is found in an enzyme called lipoprotein lipase (LPL), which breaks down fat in the bloodstream and turns it into energy. In studies done with lab rats, those animals that were moving around had ample amounts of LPL in their systems while sedentary rats had almost none. In referring to the Pennington study, Men’s Health Magazine recently published a story entitled, “The Most Dangerous Thing You’ll Do All Day” focusing on the hazards of sitting in a chair for eight hours at a stretch and suggesting that office employees put in a request to human resources for a standing work station. In what has to be the only instance in my life where I’ve actually been ahead of the curve, I’ve used a standing working station since 2006 and recommend it to every desk jockey I know. In

fact, I’m using it now! I’m such a huge proponent of these contraptions that if the journalism thing doesn’t pan out for me, I’m going to work for one of the companies that makes these things. This piece of equipment has come a long way since I first shopped for one five years ago. Back then, you had to scour the internet to find a company that manufactured them. Nowadays, they’re sold just about everywhere. And the industry has even taken the stand-as-youwork concept a step further by offering a treadmill work station where you can take a stroll while writing a report, fielding e-mails or phoning clients. The advantages are many. Using a standing work station can help burn an extra 150 calories daily and keep your legs toned. The adjustable model can be raised and lowered to the correct comfort setting, easing stress on the back and neck. You can even lower it down to desk level and sit if you get tired. Researchers have found that standing up and moving around throughout the day improves circulation and can make you more alert and more creative. Also, standing up while speaking on the phone makes you sound more confident, more authoritative, more credible to the person on the other end of the line. In fact, if you start standing at your office tomorrow, you’ll join a long list of great people who were known for standing on the job, including Vladmir Nabokov, Thomas Wolfe, Winston Churchill, Leonardo Da Vinci, Benjamin Franklin and Thomas Jefferson. Then again, all of those people have one thing in common: they’re dead. Think I’ll sit a spell.

Prune roses now in late summer to enjoy beautiful fall flowers

We are fortunate that everblooming roses produce two great seasons of bloom in Louisiana. The first occurs from April to early June, while the other occurs in October and November. Though we pruned back our rose bushes in early spring, they have been in active growth and may look overgrown, leggy and less attractive now. We recommend a second, less-severe pruning in early September to get rose bushes in shape for fall. You’ll need include a sharp bypass hand pruner and leather gloves. You also might need bypass loppers if you have to cut woody canes larger than one-half inch. Examine the bushes for dead canes and weak growth. Check the height and overall shape of the bush. Is it overgrown and leggy? Is the present shape acceptable, or does it need reshaping? The following recommendations are primarily for hybrid tea and grandiflora roses. First, remove dead growth. Make your cuts into the healthy part of the canes just above a leaf or dormant bud, or remove the dead cane entirely to its point of origin. You may need your loppers for this job. Next, remove weak, spindly canes the

Get it Growing

by Dan Gill LSU AgCenter Horticulturist diameter of a pencil or less, particularly those in the interior of the plant. Cut them off at their point of origin, making sure you don’t leave a stub. If you see sprouts originating from the root stock (below the large, knobby graft union), they should also be pruned. Do not remove any strong new shoots growing from the graft union. The major part of the pruning involves shortening the remaining vigorous canes. This will produce a fuller, more attractive bush with larger, better-quality flowers. This pruning needs to be done even if there are flowers on the bush now. Be brave. When you are finished, use the cut flowers in arrangements. Cut the canes back to 30 inches from the ground. Ideally, try to make each cut just above a bud that faces outward, away from the inside of the bush. The cuts

Page 4 • Louisiana Country • October 2011

should be made about 1/4 inch above the bud at an angle away from the bud. Don’t leave a large stub sticking above the bud, or you will promote stem rot. And don’t cut too close to the bud, or you will kill it. Clean up and dispose of all leaves and prunings. Fertilize the roses to encourage new growth. Use your favorite fertilizer according to label directions or use general purpose fertilizer appropriate for your area. Everblooming, old garden roses, shrub roses, landscape roses and other groups also may be pruned, but the pruning required is less severe and is mostly to shape the bush or control the size of more-vigorous varieties. Use best judgment when it comes to pruning these roses. As a rule of thumb, these roses are cut back about onethird their height in late summer. With old garden roses you can look

at how the rose is growing, and prune according to how you want the rose to look. Some gardeners prune their bushier roses with hedge trimmers. This is an effective technique if you have planted a long hedge of roses that would take a long time to prune with hand pruners. This clipped appearance may not be suitable for roses in garden beds. Some roses – climbing roses, ramblers and old roses – only bloom once in the spring. Unlike everblooming roses, they should not be pruned back extensively now because they will produce next year’s flowers on the growth they made this summer. Cutting them back now will reduce the number of flowers they produce. So, prune to a minimum – if you prune at all. Pruning is a job many gardeners approach with apprehension. There is always a fear that if not done correctly, dire things may happen. With some exceptions, pruning shrubs is more like getting a haircut. Even a really bad haircut will eventually grow out and look better. Consider what you are trying to accomplish before you start pruning, and have clear goals and objectives.

The plain facts about mercury levels in CFL blubs Ads and packaging materials for compact fluorescent lightbulbs (CFLs) proclaim that they use much less energy and last much longer than standard incandescent bulbs. However, if you read the fine print on the packaging or find the notice on the base of each bulb, you’ll see that it contains mercury. While that may raise an alarm, there’s no need to worry. The amount of mercury inside the glass tubes of an average CFL is miniscule—about

Co-opCorner

by Randy Pierce Chief Executive Officer, Association of Louisiana Electric Cooperatives

the equivalent of the tip of a ballpoint pen - and it’s especially small when compared to other items you may have around your home.

The amount of mercury in a CFL runs about 4-5 milligrams (mg), while a glass fever thermometer contains 500 mg, and an old-style thermostat could contain up to 3,000 mg. CFLs are safe to handle and use in your home, and they release no mercury when in operation. Even if you break a CFL, the amount of mercury that may become airborne poses a very low risk of exposure, says ENERGY STAR. (To prevent breakage, carefully unpack a CFL, and always screw and unscrew the bulb by its base.) When CFLs burn out or break, the best thing to do is recycle them. CFLs fall into the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) category of Household Hazardous Waste (HHW), but there’s no federal (or Louisiana) requirement that the bulbs be recycled. There are several HHW recycling centers in our state that accept CFLs. Some hardware stores and other retailers may have CFL recycling buckets on hand. And you may be able to dispose of CFLs during your community’s annual hazardous

waste collection event. To find out if there’s a facility or store near you that accepts CFLs, go to the Earth 911 website at www. earth911.org, or call 800-CLEANUP. Be sure to call the facility or store that’s listed before you make the trip, to ensure it allows homeowners or apartment dwellers to drop off CFLs. If one of these recycling options is not available to you, you may put burned out or broken CFLs with your regular trash—but in no case should you burn or incinerate them. Here’s what EPA says about properly disposing of CFLs. • Burned-out CFLs: Put the CFL in a sealed plastic bag, and place it with your regular trash. • Broken CFLs: If you break a CFL in your home, open nearby windows to disperse any vapor that may escape, and carefully sweep up the glass shards. (Don’t use your hands!) Wipe the area with a damp paper towel to remove glass fragments; don’t use a vacuum cleaner. Put the fragments, base of the bulb, and the paper towel in a sealed plastic bag, and place it with your regular trash. CFLs are a great idea. They’ll help you cut your utility bills, and they’ll help reduce the need for electricity production. However, to create the maximum benefit for the environment, recycling burned-out and broken CFLs makes sense.

Dear Jim: I am concerned about the security and efficiency of some of my old single-pane first-floor and basement windows. I think glass block windows would be more secure. Are they efficient, and can I install them myself? - Kathy W. Dear Kathy: As people become more concerned about security at home, they are replacing more of their old, inefficient windows with glass- and plasticblock windows. This is particularly true for first-floor and basement windows where a would-be thief can hide and take time to quietly pry open or break a standard window. In addition to security against breakins from thieves, protection from severe weather is now also becoming a more widespread concern. Some standard pane-glass windows can withstand the force of the wind during a violent storm, but damage from flying debris, which can break through most pane glass, often does much of the damage. It is possible for an intruder to break through a glass-block window, but it would be difficult, take quite a bit of time, and create a lot of noise. Even though most glass-block windows are hollow and someone may be able to

Glass blocks are safe and efficient

break through a single block, the opening is not big enough to crawl through. Solid, high-security glass blocks are also available, but they are very heavy and more difficult to install yourself. Plastic-block windows are also available and look identical to true glass blocks. Most are molded from acrylic plastic, which is fairly impact-resistant, much more than standard double-pane glass windows. Acrylic plastic is often used for window application, such as blocks, storms, etc., because it does not yellow over time as other plastic may do in the sun. Glass- and plastic-block windows can be energy efficient for several reasons. There is a sealed insulating air gap inside of each block. This is particularly efficient in glass blocks because the two halves are fused together under heat. When the glass blocks and the air inside the sealed gap cool, a slight insulating vacuum is created inside the block. Just as most replacement windows now use low-E (low-emissivity) coating on the glass, so do glass and plastic blocks. Some Hy-Lite acrylic plastic blocks have an efficient low-emissivity coating on a third pane inside the block, providing an R-3 insulating value. This can be combined with a tinted block for summer heat rejection of SHGC (solar heat gain coefficient) = 0.27 plus winter heat savings. Another reason block windows are efficient is they are airtight and remain that way throughout their life. There is very little, if any, air infiltration when the blocks are assembled properly in mortar or clear silicone. When installing a completed block panel, make sure to caulk well around the frame perimeter. miscellaneous

These are plastic block windows installed in a kitchen to provide natural light with privacy.

If you want the option of natural ventilation from your block windows to reduce air-conditioning costs during mild weather, several of the blocks can be replaced with a small hopper window. The opening panel is made from tough polycarbonate plastic. It is too small to get through even if someone could break it. A hopper-style window closes on compression-type weatherstripping, so it is very airtight. Opening casement-style block window panels with privacy style blocks are often used in bathrooms and basements. Always check local building codes about egress requirements for various rooms. If there is a fire or a roof collapses during a tornado or hurricane, you need to have a window that will open wide enough to crawl through. Many casement style block replacement windows should meet these requirements. It is not difficult to install block windows yourself. There is quite a learning

curve to install individual blocks yourself, so if you are inexperienced, select preassembled panels. These large panels are installed similarly to any replacement window. Some of the strongest glass block panels, which meet IBC (International Building Code) and Dade County, Fla., hurricane impact tests, are framed by 2x6 pressure-treated lumber. Glass block panels, such as from Pittsburgh Corning, are available in 60 sizes and three block patterns. Some minor framing of the rough opening is required to fit the panel. Plastic blocks, such as from Hy-Lite, can be customsized to fit your existing window. Do-it-yourself kits for installing individual blocks are also available. Corner spacers are used to properly position the blocks. When the mortar sets up, the spacer ends are broken off and covered with more mortar. Kits for using clear silicone instead of mortar are also available for a more seamless appearance.
