FOR FROZEN DESSERT RETAILERS

Welcome to the 31st Annual Source Book! It is hard to believe that this is the 31st Annual Source Book. It is our sincere hope that you will use this important reference guide for your sources of supply for the next year. We have made every effort to insure that each listing is accurate and complete.
The Manufacturers’ Listings begin on page 9. Companies are listed in alphabetical order. Each listing includes the company name, address, phone, fax and toll free numbers, email and web addresses, the name of the president, the name of the national sales manager and the year the company was established. This listing also includes information about distribution, any minimum order restrictions and if the company offers an equipment program with products.
Following the Manufacturers’ Listings, beginning on page 12, is the Trade and Brand Names section. Sometimes a company is better known for its trade or brand name than its company name. Trade and brand names are listed alphabetically, followed by the company that owns the name.
On page 13, you will find the Products Listings. Products are listed in alphabetical order and companies that manufacture the product are listed under each category. For example, if you are looking for “soft serve mix”, look under that category and you will find a list of companies that make soft serve mix. Refer to the Manufacturers’ Listings beginning on page 9 for more information about the companies.
Following the product section, you will find a list of manufacturers with numbers in front of each company. These numbers correspond to the numbers at the end of the distributors’ listings. They tell you what manufacturer’s products the distributor carries.
The Distributor Listings begin on page 20. Distributors are listed in the state in which they are located. If the company services other states with
salespeople, the distributor’s name is listed in that state as well, followed by the abbreviation for the state in which the company is located. Refer to that state for more information about the company.
Distributor Listings include the company name, address, phone, fax and toll free numbers, e-mail and web addresses, the names of the president and sales manager and the year the company was established.
The listing also tells you if the distributor accepts credit cards, the method of payment accepted (cash & carry, open account or COD only), if the company has a showroom, if the company offers free delivery, or if there is a minimum order for free delivery. These listings also tell you if the company offers specials on a regular basis and the type of products distributed (food, frozen food, paper, equipment). After this information, the manufacturer numbers are listed, telling you what lines the company carries. Refer to pages 18 and 19 to find the name of the manufacturer.
Companies that are listed entirely in bold face type have placed a display ad in this issue. Please refer to the page number at the end of the listings or the Advertisers’ Index on page 29 to locate the ad. Be sure to tell our advertisers you saw their ad first in The National Dipper Magazine.
If your company is not listed in this Source Book and you want to be listed next year, call or e-mail me and I will include you in the E-mail for the questionnaire. All you have to do is fill out the questionnaire and return it by the deadline. You must fill out a questionnaire every year to be listed in the Source Book. We do not use information from the previous Source Book. Thanks to all who took the time to fill out the questionnaire. You helped make this a truly valuable directory.

THE ICE CREAM GRAMMAR, the complete guide to gelato and ice cream making was written by Alessio Piantanida and recently released in London in 2022. The author, an Executive Pastry Chef, found himself confined to home during the pandemic. He used his time to study and almost as a joke, uploaded a short video course about ice cream. He received much attention and many messages and realized that there was no complete book discussing artisanal ice cream and gelato making. The result is this book. He says, “it is intended to fill the gap in the knowledge required to intimately understand the ice cream game rules, in fact, the gammar.”

THE NATIONAL RESTAURANT Association Educational Foundation (NRAEF) is hosting 18 active-duty military members at The Culinary Institute of America New York for five days of instruction through its Advanced Culinary Training Program (ACTP). ACTP plays an important role in helping the nation’s service members and veterans transition into the restaurant, foodservice, and hospitality industry.
ACTP is held three times each year at The Culinary Institute of America to bolster service members’ culinary performance, understanding, and competencies, as well as maintain a mission-ready workforce. This week’s ACTP event helped mark 71 years of the restaurant industry’s support for the U.S. armed forces.
“It’s fortuitous that in the run up to Veterans Day we have this chance to host these amazing service members and reiterate our commitment to building meaningful initiatives that support workforce readiness and their transition to civilian culinary careers,” said Rob Gifford, president of the National Restaurant Association Educational Foundation. “We are grateful for the sacrifices of our nation’s veterans and their family members, and salute all that they do to serve our country.”
The NRAEF’s military programs focus on training service members in culinary arts and restaurant management; providing training to support military force readiness; career pathways as service members transition to civilian life,

ENDEMIC SUSTAINABILITY issues within global cocoa supply chains, including child labour and deforestation will continue unless efforts are coupled with the payment of a higher farmgate price for cocoa, according to the 2022 Cocoa Barometer. The report finds that a combination of public policies, private sector purchasing practices, and agricultural solutions are needed.
The Barometer – developed by the VOICE Network of civil society organizations – shows that there remains a wide range of problems facing families in cocoa communities, including child labor; gender inequality; (infant) malnutrition; lack of access to education; insufficient health care facilities and sanitation; and a variety of labour rights violations for smallholders, workers, and tenants.Environmental issues such as deforestation and climate change remain a growing concern.
Without a significant increase in earnings, cocoa farmers will be burdened with the responsibility for addressing this range of issues without the means or incentives to do so. As such, environmental and social harms are likely to continue in the world’s major cocoa producing countries Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire. Top-down national and international government strategies aimed at increasing cocoa production to address poverty tend to support the chocolate industry while failing to address these issues.
Additionally, the cost-of-living crisis is putting further pressure on farmers in West Africa. “In the past, after selling my cocoa beans, I used to plan my expenses and charges for my household, but this is becoming very difficult now. Prices of products are far beyond my provisions. I have children to care about and I‘m struggling to pay their school fees,” said Yao Kouame Martia of the cocoa cooperative ECAM in the south-west of Côte d’Ivoire.

JENI’S announces the appointment of veteran food industry executive Stacy Peterson as Chief Executive Officer. Stacy will assume the role in December.
A self-admitted “raving fan of the Jeni’s brand for years,” Stacy is known as a calm, thoughtful leader, with a great eye for talent. Most recently she has served as Chief Revenue Officer of Wingstop [WING], where in her nine-year tenure she has served as Chief Experience Officer and Chief Digital & Technology Officer. Stacy helped grow Wingstop from 550 restaurants when she joined to the 1,900 in operation today. Stacy led Wingstop’s digital and marketing transformation, building digital experiences that enabled industry leading momentum for Wingstop. Prior to her roles at Wingstop, Stacy held leadership positions at Service King, a Blackstone Portfolio Company, as well as FedEx Office and CBRE.
Of equal import, Stacy cites Wildberry Lavender as her favorite flavor. She is married with two boys and will relocate with her family to Columbus in 2023.
“I’m excited to join Team Jeni’s and help carry on their commitment to making better ice creams and bringing people together,” said Peterson. “What Jeni created, with quality as the company’s North Star and a tremendous focus on customer experience and a team commitment to be a Force for Good, will continue to be what differentiates this company from our competition.”
Jeni’s outgoing CEO John Lowe announced in June that he was stepping aside as CEO after 13 years. He will remain on its board. Says Lowe, “I’m so excited to have Stacy lead our team. The company will benefit from her thoughtful approach and deep expertise in fast growth brands. She loves helping people succeed and I’m excited to see her coach and mentor the 1,800 members of Team Jeni’s. I know her leadership will help ensure we are a force for good for years to come. This is the Distributors’ section. This list was compiled through questionnaires sent to businesses in the ice cream and frozen dessert industry. Following are the companies that returned the completed questionnaire before the deadline.
Distributors are listed in the state in which they are located. If the distributor services other states with salespeople, the company also has a one line listing in that state. The state abbreviation after this listing tells you where the company is located. Turn to that state for the main listing.
The numbers at the end of each listing indicate the manufacturer lines the company distributes. Refer to page XX for the name of the manufacturer. Companies that are listed in bold face type also have a display ad in this issue. Refer to the page number after the main listing for more information.

By using a Rite-Temp water chiller there is ZERO WASTE WATER, which saves money. The chilled water also protects the investment made in the soft serve equipment by providing constant supply temperature regardless of ambient conditions. This keeps head pressure low for extended life of your equipment.
The simplistic design of the Rite-Temp manifold pictured, makes it easy to switch to back-up water supply in the event of chilled loop failure. This ensures that soft serve equipment and batch freezers experience no down time.

“The Ice Cream Professionals” A Complete Service to the Ice Cream Industry Since 1965 1-800-423-2732 732-225-1314
When it comes to seeking advice or preparing the ice cream and frozen dessert operation’s tax returns, the complex, ever-changing tax rules make doing it without help extremely risky. While off-the-shelf software or more expensive custom software are frequently used, professional help is almost a necessity.
Most in the ice cream industry use a professional at some point -– most commonly to prepare tax returns. In fact, according to the IRS, more than half of all returns filed were filed by tax professionals. For those without professional help -– or those seeking to change tax professionals -– finding a professional should be more than a search for the least expensive or most convenient. The first question is what kind of tax professional is required?
When it comes to help with tax preparation or tax questions, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) offers free advice -– but it is free advice at a price and often difficult to obtain. The IRS will not advocate aggressive tax solutions, nor can their answers be taken as gospel. In fact, the IRS will not stand behind incorrect advice or even its erroneous interpretation of its own rules.
While anyone can be a paid tax return preparer -- as long as they have an IRS Preparer Tax Identification Number (PTIN) -– remember there are various types of tax return preparers with differing levels of skills, education and expertise.
Bookkeepers are great for day-today business recordkeeping. Accountants, on the other hand, usually crunch numbers tracked by the bookkeeper, translating -- even evaluating -– those figures into a format understandable and usable by the average business owner, shareholder or manager. When dealing with an accountant, don’t underestimate the importance of a Certified Public Accountant or CPA.
Passing the CPA examination is frequently a guarantee of a certain level of abilities. Those three letters are awarded only to those who have
passed a rigorous three-day, nationally standardized exam. Most states require CPAs to have at least a college degree or its equivalent.
While many CPAs do advise and prepare returns, keep in mind that the CPA designation does not require a special knowledge of our tax laws. Although CPAs and attorneys are permitted to practice before the IRS and the tax courts, another group of professionals, enrolled agents (EAs), must demonstrate a specific knowledge of taxes in order to represent taxpayers in those venues.
The EA has successfully completed a three-day test that is all about taxes. The IRS requires a certain level of competence, adherence to rigid professional standards as well as relying on continuing professional education to maintain those skill levels. And it is the IRS, not a local association of professionals that tests, monitors and polices EAs.
Generally, the experts suggest that it is best to find a professional focusing on clients that mirror your situation. Smaller tax return preparers and national chains such as H&R Block tend to focus on individuals, professionals and smaller-sized businesses. Medium-sized CPA firms usually specialize in mid-to-large scale regional businesses and high-income individuals. National CPA firms are geared to servicing very large companies and their top employees.
Typically, attorneys specializing in tax law are not ardent disciples of tax return preparation. Such legal professionals are most often confined to complex transaction issues and document preparation. Also keep in mind that non-legal tax professionals are afforded some degree of client confidentiality. For issues requiring absolute confidentiality, consider the use of attorneys who enjoy legal extremes of data protection.
The best way to find someone to prepare the operation’s tax returns or
to render needed tax advice is to get a referral from business associates, the business’s banker or attorney. If more possibilities are needed, every state has professional associations including organizations such as:
• American Academy of AttorneyCPAs (AAA-CPA) is the only organization made up of individuals who are dually-qualified as attorneys and as Certified Public Accountants (CPAs). https://www.attorney-cpa.com/
• American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) is the world’s largest member association representing the accounting profession. https://www.aicpa.org
• National Association of Enrolled Agents (NAEA) is a professional society representing enrolled agents (EAs), America’s “tax experts.” EAs earn their licenses from the U.S. Treasury Department by passing a three-part examination administered by the IRS and are required to complete annual continuing education requirements that exceed the IRS’s required minimum and adhere to a stringent code of ethics. https://taxexperts.naea.org/
• National Association of Tax Professionals (NATP) claims to be the largest nonprofit organization with members of all 50 states focusing specifically on federal tax preparation. NATP claims its members adhere to a superior standard of professional conduct and bring excellence to the more than 12 million taxpayers they assist worldwide. https://www.natptax.com/ AboutNATP/Pages/Find-a-Tax-Preparer.aspx
• National Conference of CPA Practitioners (NCPAP) is another professional organization that claims to represent over one million business and individual clients. NCCPA monitors and influences tax administration and tax policy by meeting with IRS representatives and state taxing authorities as well as national and state elected officials. https://go.nccpap. org/info/cpareferral
• National Society of Accountants (NSA) along with its state affiliates
represent independent practitioners who provide accounting, tax, auditing, financial and estate planning and management services to 19 million individuals and businesses. NSA members are required to pursue continuing professional education to stay current on tax laws and skilled in client service areas. It also has a strict code of ethics that all NSA members must follow. https://web.nsacct.org
• National Society of Tax Professionals (NSTP) professes to assisting its members attain the greatest expertise, proficiency and competency is all areas of tax compliance while preparing its members to be qualified to effectively provide professional tax preparation services for their clients. https://www.natptax.com
And, remember, the professional used for tax advice need not be the same used for preparing the ice cream or frozen yogurt operation’s tax returns.
It should go without saying that the tax preparer’s qualifications along with his or her history should be checked. Asking the right questions, often during the free initial conference offered by most professionals, can help determine whether the professional will be a good fit for the business as well as assess the needs of the business.
While few organizations provide reviews of their members, the IRS’s Directory of Federal Tax Return Preparers with Credentials and Select Qualifications can often help in the search for professional tax help. The information contained in the directory is all that is publicly available and there are many other valid tax return preparers who have a current year preparer tax identification number from the IRS who are not listed. https://irs. treasury.gov/rpo/rpo.jsf
Tax return preparer fraud is among the list of common tax scams. The IRS provides tips on avoiding unscrupulous tax return preparers and investigates paid tax return preparers who act improperly.
However, any business owner or manager that has been financially impacted by a tax return preparer’s misconduct or improper tax preparation
practices can make a formal complaint.
To report abusive tax return preparers or suspected tax fraud, the IRS’s Form 14157, Return Preparer Complaint and Form 14157-A, Tax Return Preparer Fraud or Misconduct Affidavit, are used by individuals, sole proprietors and single-member LLCs to report a tax preparer’s misconduct.
Although these tax preparer complaint forms don’t let anyone off the hook for paying taxes owed, they allow every individual, sole proprietor and single-member LLC to anonymously report tax preparer misconduct.
Since business (and life) happens year-round, not just at tax time, access to the tax professional for needed guidance year-round is almost essential. If problems arise with the tax return, the professional should be able to address them. If there is an IRS audit, the professional should be available and able to guide the ice cream or frozen dessert business owner or manager through the process.
An important step to finding the right professional requires an inventory of what the business actually
needs in the way of services and, most importantly, how much you can afford to pay for that advice or services. It is important to determine beforehand just how much of the work you and the operation’s employees will do and how much of it will be done by the professional -– or professionals.
Shopping for a professional is virtually a necessity in today’s business economy. Fortunately, many professionals offer free first meetings for discussion of expectations, services needed and provided, extent of involvement by the professional and the portion of the work the operation’s employees expects to shoulder, time constraints and, above all, costs. It is not “tacky” to discuss fees before engaging the services of a professional although money should not be the sole criteria for selecting that professional.
Comparison shopping to find a tax professional who can provide the level of service you require at a price that the business -- and you -- can afford is a process that should begin immediately. But, keep in mind when you sign that tax return, you become responsible for everything on it -– even if someone else prepared it. v
