DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE

Dear friends, During a recent trip to Germany, I visited several museums and exhibitions. They were always filled with people, and seeing art being embraced as part of everyday life in this way was inspiring. Returning to the Gallery, I noticed that the Gallery Children’s Biennale and Yayoi Kusama: Life is the Heart of the Rainbow continued to be abuzz with visitors. While some were first timers, many were returning to visit the exhibitions again. As we approach our second anniversary, this strong continued support is an encouraging sign that the art we display resonates with the public. Gallery Children’s Biennale was designed for both the young and young at heart. Many multi-generational families spent quality time exploring the installations together, with adults unleashing their inner child as well. Similarly, the snaking queues and storm of social media surrounding the Yayoi Kusama exhibition testified to her infectious appeal. One visitor shared that the exhibition took her on an emotional journey with the artist and showed her how vulnerability can create magic. While last quarter marked the closing of two very special exhibitions, we will present two new exhibitions in November, under the theme “Century of Light.” Between Worlds and Colours of Impressionism focus on art in the 19th century and offer a rare opportunity to view masterpieces by Monet, Renoir, Juan Luna, Raden Saleh and more. These shows, and their accompanying programmes, are part of our larger vision to connect the public with art. We look forward to welcoming you to National Gallery Singapore.

ART WE LOVE

This is one of four Javanese landscapes that Raden Saleh was commissioned to paint for a Scottish trader based in Java in the late 1850s. It depicts two Javanese gentlemen and their four retainers hunting deer on the Bandung Plain. This was a popular pastime among the local elite and their European guests at the time. 4

View this work, on public display for the first time, in Between Worlds at Singtel Special Exhibition Gallery C from 16 November.

Liu Kang Artist and Model 1954 Oil on canvas 84 x 124 cm Gift of Shell Group Companies On display at DBS Singapore Gallery 1.

“Siapa Nama Kamu?” means “What is your name?” The inaugural exhibition of the DBS Singapore Gallery poses this question, inviting visitors to consider how art may relate to issues of self and community, and what it means to look at Singapore through its art. Siapa Nama Kamu? weaves together a rich and captivating narrative of artworks in a broadly chronological sequence, covering Singapore’s art history from the 19th century to the present day. Drawing on close to 400 works, it explores the influences and practices that have shaped and transformed Singapore art. Liu Kang Gallery Located within the DBS Singapore Gallery, this space commemorates pioneer artist Liu Kang’s role in the development of modern art in Singapore. In 2003, Liu Kang (1911–2004) and his wife Chen Jen Pin (1913–2009) generously donated close to 1,000 paintings and works on paper to the National Collection, forming the largest donation of a single artist’s work to the Collection to date. BETWEEN DECLARATIONS AND DREAMS: Art of Southeast Asia since the 19 th Century Ongoing | Supreme Court Wing, Levels 3–5, UOB Southeast Asia Gallery

Chuah Thean Teng. Morning. c. 1960−1963. Batik on cloth. 112 x 173 cm. On display at UOB Southeast Asia Gallery 8.

Housed in the former Supreme Court building, the UOB Southeast Asia Gallery presents an exhibition on the art of Southeast Asia through shared artistic impulses across the region. Starting in the 19th century, the history of Southeast Asian art is characterised by a continuous encounter with the new, and is inseparably linked to the region’s tumultuous social and political history. The meaning and expression of art was constantly negotiated as artists of Southeast Asia sought to incorporate and reinvent local expressions and aesthetic traditions as they grappled with modernity. The UOB Southeast Asia Gallery is made possible through a gift by United Overseas Bank.

PERFORMANCES THINGS TO BRING ON A BOAT TO NOWHERE AND EVERYWHERE VIVIAN WANG X CYRIL WONG X DANH VO Fri 10 Nov | 7–7.45pm | City Hall Wing, Level 5, Ng Teng Fong Roof Garden Gallery | Free

Sound artist Vivian Wang and poet Cyril Wong respond to Danh Vo’s rooftop commission in this performance, against the backdrop of sunset. Wang takes reference from the fragmented psyche inherent in Vo’s exploration of place and belonging, drawing on the transitional nature of dusk to evoke feelings of dislocation. Wong then continues with a reading of Things to bring on a boat to nowhere and everywhere. The poem re-imagines the migrant's travel by ocean in terms of dreamlike objects, a surrealist inventory inspired by Vo's metallic ocean and wooden sculptures. This programme is organised in collaboration with Singapore Writers Festival 2017.

RESONATES WITH Saturdays and Sundays | 2pm, 3pm, 4pm | Padang Atrium | Free

This series features performances by musical ensembles and contemporary musicians. The monthly line-ups are inspired by the Gallery’s collection, exhibitions and architecture. The Impressionists are often seen as liberators of colour, celebrated for depicting the world in new ways by simplifying the varied effects of light in nature. Their close links to pictorial tradition and science, however, are less known. This talk by Paul Perrin (Curator of Paintings, Musée d’Orsay, Paris) examines the Impressionists’ use of colour and diverse sources of influence. It also explores the nuances of Impressionism as a movement in relation to fields such as drawing, colour theory and Neo-Impressionism. 23

NEW

National heroes as well as enigmatic figures, Raden Saleh and Juan Luna traversed the colonial territories of Southeast Asia and the imperial cities of Europe, creating dramatic paintings that have been read as allegories of anti-colonialism in their respective homelands of Indonesia and the Philippines. Together, their works trace stylistic shifts in painting through the 19th century, while reflecting the cultural and social dynamics of this turbulent period. COLOURS OF IMPRESSIONISM: MASTERPIECES FROM THE MUSÉE D’ORSAY Paperback | $53.50 inclusive of GST | ISBN: 978-981-11-4515-5 Using colour as the lens to offer a new perspective on Impressionism, this catalogue sweeps us from Manet’s rich blacks, through the green and blue landscapes of Monet and Cézanne, to the sensuous pinks of late Renoir. Along this journey, scientific discoveries and emerging definitions of modernity are explored, illuminating the radical innovations of the Impressionists and shifting preconceptions of their art.
