DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE

Dear friends, We’re midway through the year and it is a wonderful time to both catch up on, and add to our list of “must-dos”. Our first international exhibition, Reframing Modernism, has been delighting visitors since it opened in March. Sadly, it will be coming to an end on 17 July. If you haven’t seen the show yet, it is a rare chance to view works by European masters like Picasso and Kandinsky alongside Southeast Asian ones such as Le Pho. I highly recommend you do! We see the Gallery as a place for visitors of all ages and from all walks of life, to discover new stories and get inspired, be it through our exhibitions, programmes or restaurants. This quarter, we’re excited to open Iskandar Jalil: Kembara Tanah Liat (Clay Travels), the most comprehensive showcase to date of Cultural Medallion recipient and leading Singapore ceramist Iskandar Jalil’s artworks. Another launch close to our hearts is Art Conversations. In collaboration with the Dementia Prevention Programme by National University of Singapore, these sessions aim to use engaging discussions on art to support good mental health. And for kids and families, Istana Art Event promises a fun day out for all. To celebrate National Day, there will be art and crafts activities and an on-the-spot art competition with fantastic prizes to be won. We look forward to seeing you at our events!

Dr Eugene Tan Director, National Gallery Singapore

LONG -TERM EXHIBITIONS SIAPA NAMA K AMU? Art in Singapore since the 19 th Century DBS Singapore Gallery

“Siapa Nama Kamu?” means “What is your name?” The inaugural exhibition of the DBS Singapore Gallery poses this question, inviting visitors to consider how art may relate to issues of self and community, and what it means to look at Singapore through its art. Siapa Nama Kamu? weaves together a rich and captivating narrative of artworks in a broadly chronological sequence, covering Singapore’s art history from the 19th century to the present day. Drawing on close to 400 works, it explores the influences and practices that have shaped and transformed Singapore art.

Liu Kang. Souri. 1953. Oil on canvas. 120 × 70 cm. Gift of Liu Kang Family.

Liu Kang Gallery Located within the DBS Singapore Gallery, this space commemorates pioneer artist Liu Kang’s role in the development of modern art in Singapore. In 2003, Liu Kang (1911 – 2004) and his wife Chen Jen Pin (1913 – 2009) generously donated over 1,000 paintings and works on paper to the National Collection, forming the largest donation of a single artist’s work to the Collection to date. The DBS Singapore Gallery is made possible through a gift by DBS Bank.

BET WEEN DECLARATIONS AND DREAMS: Art of Southeast Asia since the 19 th Century UOB Southeast Asia Gallery

Housed in the former Supreme Court building, the UOB Southeast Asia Gallery presents an exhibition on the art of Southeast Asia through shared artistic impulses across the region. Starting in the 19th century, the history of Southeast Asian art is characterised by a continuous encounter with the new, and is inseparably linked to the region’s tumultuous social and political history. The meaning and expression of art was constantly negotiated as artists of Southeast Asia sought to incorporate and reinvent local expressions and aesthetic traditions as they grappled with modernity. Travel Back in Time: Peer through the lens of a stereoscope. This optical instrument will give you a glimpse of life in the 19th century in 3D. Be Inspired: How do artists find inspiration? From an artist’s sketch to a poem, different pieces reveal more about the creative process behind the works. The UOB Southeast Asia Gallery is made possible through a gift by United Overseas Bank. Latiff Mohidin. Pagodas II. Pago-Pago Series. 1964. Oil on canvas. 99.4 × 99.2 cm. Adopted by Binjai Tree in memory of Chia Yew Kay and Tan Kim Siew.

SPECIAL EXHIBITIONS WU GUANZHONG: BEAUTY BEYOND FORM 吴冠中:大美无垠 26 Nov 2015–25 Sep 2016 | Wu Guanzhong Gallery

Wu Guanzhong. Spring Mountains in Red and Ink. 1986. Chinese ink and colour on paper. 68.1 × 137.9 cm. Gift of the artist.

Spanning over 50 years of Wu’s career, this show features both oil and ink works, many of which are on display for the first time in Singapore. Wu (1919 – 2010) was a major advocate and forerunner of synthesising Chinese art and Western modernism. This show highlights his proficiency in both Chinese and Western art traditions, and his distinctive contribution to the discourse of modern Chinese painting. The Wu Guanzhong Gallery is named in honour of a significant gift of works by Wu to Singapore. This collection is the largest holding of his works in a public museum, and is one of the most valuable art donations ever presented to Singapore.

CHUA EK K AY: AFTER THE RAIN 蔡逸溪: 雨后 26 Nov 2015–30 Oct 2016 | City Hall Wing, Level 4 Gallery

Chua Ek Kay (1947 – 2008) was one of Singapore’s leading ink painters. His first show, in 1988, was a success, and within two decades of becoming a full-time artist, he enjoyed a level of acclaim that few other artists in Singapore had. After the Rain is a reflection of Chua’s artistic journey. He had a clear affinity with water, often referring to watery reflections, lotus ponds or rain in his paintings. Water also alludes to the potential for growth and renewal after adversity. It reminds us that although his practice has come to an end, his paintings have an afterlife, inspiring and captivating future audiences. This exhibition commemorates the significant donation of 38 works by the artist’s family to the National Collection in 2010 – 2011.

Raframing Modernism Gallery 2

The Gallery’s first international collaboration, this exhibition reframes the existing paradigm of how modernist painting is understood. Drawing on over 200 iconic works by modern artists from Southeast Asia and Europe, it invites us to reconsider how artists working in different global contexts approached modern art and modernism in the 20 th century. For the first time, view modern masterworks by Southeast Asian artists such as Le Pho, Cheong Soo Pieng and HR Ocampo, alongside treasures from the Centre Pompidou collection by artists such as Pablo Picasso, Marc Chagall, Henri Matisse and Vassily Kandinsky.

SPECIAL EXHIBITIONS ISKANDAR JALIL: KEMBARA TANAH LIAT (Clay Travels) 1 Sep 2016–28 Feb 2017 | Concourse Gallery 1 & 2

Iskandar Jalil. Round Form Torn into Half. 1991. Clay with various glazes. 19 × 54 × 20 cm. Collection of Singapore Art Museum.

Iskandar Jalil is a leading ceramic artist in Singapore. He is widely recognised for expanding, advancing and reinventing the practice of studio pottery and ceramic art. Iskandar Jalil: Kembara Tanah Liat (Clay Travels) is the first major survey of Iskandar's career and draws on close to 200 works from the 1960s to the present. It highlights his deep connection with clay and belief that the material embodies the local identity and culture of the land. He insisted on using clay from Southeast Asia and drew on a wide range of cultural sources to capture the character of the region. This exhibition explores the practice of ceramic art, challenges the conventional view of it and underlines its place in the history of modern art in Southeast Asia and beyond.

TOTEM 25 May–15 Sep 2016 | Ng Teng Fong Roof Garden Gallery

This large scale sculpture by Singaporean artist Chun Kai Feng plays on a familiar local sight—the concrete benches seen on the grounds of Housing Development Board (HDB) estates. The benches embody the rugged functionalism of Singapore’s modernism. Using the simplest means of sculpture making, the benches are stacked to build a monument. Its primitive form evokes a tribal totem, albeit a modern one for the city. The glossy finish stands in stark contrast to the original look of the concrete benches. This creates an arresting work and thought-provoking dialogue with the skyscrapers that surround the Gallery. Chun Kai Feng graduated from The Glasgow School of Art with a Masters in Fine Art in 2010. Interested in mapping the day-to-day, his works are based on ordinary urban elements in the background of a city. These are made with industrial techniques and materials, and adhere to Chun’s formal sculptural discipline. These urban objects are composed in a space that becomes charged with narrative potential.

UPCOMING EXHIBITION ARTIST AND EMPIRE: (EN)COUNTERING COLONIAL LEGACIES In association with Tate Britain 6 Oct 2016–26 Mar 2017 | Singtel Special Exhibition Gallery Elizabeth Butler. The Remnants of an Army. 1879. Oil on canvas. 132.1 × 233.7 cm. Collection of Tate. Presented by Sir Henry Tate 1897. © Tate, London 2016.

Organised in association with Tate Britain, the Gallery’s second international exhibition explores the different ways in which the British Empire has been represented and contested through art. It critically examines art produced for the British Empire from a contemporary perspective, and features viewpoints from Southeast Asia. The exhibition also takes a close look at the relationship between colonial experience and the rise of modern art in former colonies such as Singapore, with a special focus on Sir Stamford Raffles. Ranging from the 16th century to the present day, Artist and Empire draws upon close to 200 works from international and regional collections as well as Singapore institutions. Artist and Empire is organised by National Gallery Singapore in association with Tate Britain, London. ORGANISED BY

SOUTHEAST ASIAN PREMIERE

In conjunction with Reframing Modernism

JEAN-LUC GODARD, DISORDER EXPOSED By Céline Gailleurd & Olivier Bohler Co-produced by Nocturnes Productions, INA and Imagia France | French with English subtitles | 2012 | 65 min | Rating TBA Sun 10 Jul | 3pm | Auditorium | Post-screening Q&A with producer Raphael Millet Free admission; please register early through our website or ticketing counters to enjoy complimentary entry to Reframing Modernism.

This essay film retraces Godard’s controversial exhibition Travel(s) in Utopia at the Centre Pompidou in 2006. Claiming that the museum had censored his earlier concept, he re-conceived this exhibition as a disparate collection of images from ancient Egypt till today, sculptures, and video installations with film clips from People on Sunday to Black Hawk Down. Godard’s exhibition reflected the curatorial tendency in his cinema, which has been described as films remembering films, through cinematic references, allusions and pastiches. The montage approach introduces dialogue and fresh connections between dissimilar texts, creating new ways of seeing. This is not unlike the premise of the exhibition Reframing Modernism, co-curated by Centre Pompidou and National Gallery Singapore. By placing paintings of Southeast Asian artists alongside those from European artists with shared concerns in their practice, it suggests the existence of multiple modernities and unsettles a singular history of modernism originating from the West.
