TRAVEL CATALOG

I

2017

Dear Traveler, Over the past year, National Geographic travelers have hiked beneath the jagged peaks of Patagonia, circled Mont Blanc on foot, slept like nomads in traditional Mongolian gers and woken up to ride horses across the steppe. Our travelers went kayaking in Croatia, dog-sledding in Sweden, and followed ancient pilgrimage routes in Japan and in Spain. Exploring at ground-level is travel in its purest form. As you walk or hike or paddle through extraordinary places, you learn the landscape, spend time with the locals, discover flora and fauna you would otherwise have missed. You breathe in the air, take in the views, and have time and space to savor it all. Traveling in a small, intimate group on a National Geographic Adventure, you’ll get to know fascinating cultures in Vietnam or the age-old Andean villages of Peru’s Sacred Valley. Embrace a physical challenge—like crossing England on foot or climbing Mount Kilimanjaro—or choose a less strenuous trip to Borneo’s rain forests or the hills of Provence. Our newest trip, the South Africa Safari Adventure, draws together everything that makes these trips such a rewarding way to travel. We start out in Cape Town, exploring the glorious Cape Peninsula and climb up iconic Table Mountain for a picnic and unforgettable views. We’ll bike through the winelands and share a meal in a local home, and we’ll get a close-up look at the traditions and everyday lives of the Xhosa and the Zulu peoples. Then it’s off to the incredible nature reserves of the east, where we’ll take a wildlife cruise, meet local conservationists, and settle into a National Geographic Unique Lodge of the World for three days on safari. With top-notch trip leaders and a range of activity levels to choose from, our active adventures take you off the beaten path in some of the world’s most spectacular places. I hope you’ll join us! Sincerely,

Lynn Cutter Executive Vice President National Geographic Travel

DISCOVER THE NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC DIFFERENCE

Traveling on a National Geographic Adventure means much more than checking off world-renowned sites. On all of our trips, we delve into each destination and get to know it intimately, following in the spirit of the Society’s explorers and adventurers. We seek out experiences that are meaningful and authentic, that take you to spectacular and little-known places, that give you the rush that comes with achieving a personal quest, and, in the end, that linger as rich and vivid memories.

4

NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC OPENS DOORS

One of the beauties of traveling with National Geographic is the access you enjoy to special sites, fascinating people, and private homes. Whenever possible, we arrange visits with experts in the field so you can meet the people whose discoveries you’ve read about in the pages of our magazine. You can expect authentic, immersive experiences.

EXPLORE IN SMALL NUMBERS

A key part of experiencing a place intimately is getting away from the crowds. We keep our group size to a maximum of 16 so that we can move with agility, assimilate easily into local communities, and enjoy every place we visit in depth.

INSPIRED BY OUR EXPLORERS, LED BY TOP GUIDES

When crafting our adventures, we seek inspiration from National Geographic’s intrepid explorers—bold, curious, and boundary-pushing individuals who have ventured to the farthest corners of the planet to uncover its myriad wonders. Our partner in adventure is Mountain Travel Sobek, a pioneering travel company that has brought travelers to some of the world’s most remote places for more than 40 years. Once you’re on the road, you’ll explore alongside some of the best guides in the business.

AN OPPORTUNITY TO CHALLENGE YOURSELF

We don’t call them adventures for nothing! You may find yourself trekking high above a mountain lake, deep into a rain forest, or past little-known archaeological wonders. Maybe you’ll traverse legendary landscapes by camel or on horseback, or kayak the shores of a tropical island. Our adventures range from easy to ultimate challenge: you choose the level of physical activity that best matches your abilities and interests.

SUSTAINING THE WORLD’S TREASURES

We are committed to sustaining the character and integrity of each place we visit—its environment, culture, heritage, and the well-being of its residents. Your participation helps support National Geographic Society’s projects that work to protect indigenous cultures and conserve native habitats and wildlife.

UNIQUE ACCOMMODATIONS ON EVERY ADVENTURE An integral part of each trip is where we rest up after the day’s activities. Our accommodations are chosen for their location, comfort, and the way they reflect the local character, whether it’s a historic monastery along the Route of St. James in northern Spain, a stunning safari camp in the Serengeti, or an otherworldly hotel carved out of snow and ice in Sweden. When we have the opportunity, we stay in properties that are members of National Geographic Unique Lodges of the World collection—a group of extraordinary properties that offer one-of-a-kind experiences while remaining committed to sustainable tourism. We settle into a charming Andean casitas in the cloud forests beneath Machu Picchu, an an eco-lodge tucked amid the tropical flora and fauna of Borneo, bungalows nestled in a 1,000-acre nature reserve overlooking Costa Rica’s coastline, and a stunning lodge set within a private game reserve in South Africa.

JAPAN ADVENTURE: TOKYO TO SACRED KUMANO

In Japan, a deep reverence for nature and tradition vies with a fascination of all that is futuristic—and this unique juxtaposition is part of the country’s appeal. Our adventure starts off amid the skyscrapers of Tokyo; then we step back in time in Asuka, one of Japan’s ancient capitals. In the sacred mountains of the Kii Peninsula, embark on the Kumano Kodo, a beautiful pilgrimage route that has drawn emperors and kimono-clad worshippers for more than a thousand years. Delve into Japan’s spiritual traditions as we hike to stunning shrines. Soak in hot springs, stay in traditional mountain inns and ryokans, and experience the diversity of Japan’s fine cuisine—from the lively pubs of Tokyo to locally sourced meals along the Kumano Kodo. Above: Japanese pilgrims in traditional dress hike the Kumano Kodo. Right: A taiko drummer performs at a temple.
