Over the past 130 years, we’ve sent our scientists, storytellers, and adventurers across continents and into remote cultures, down to the oceans’ depths and up to the highest mountains, in an effort to better understand our planet. National Geographic Expeditions grew from this legacy as a way to invite others to explore—to encounter the wonders of the world up close, in depth, right at the source, and to be transformed by the experience.

T H E U LT I M AT E EXPEDITION

National Geographic and Lindblad Expeditions continue to push the boundaries of exploration and open doors all over the world. Since 2004, we have worked together to bring you to the planet’s most fascinating places on board our fleet of expedition ships—and to share with you our passion for adventure, discovery, and conservation. With a knowledgeable expedition team at our helm, we take to the seas in the spirit of National Geographic explorers, seeking discovery wherever we can find it. We venture out—on foot, by kayak and Zodiac, by snorkel, and even by paddleboard—to experience the world from all angles. And then we add a new dimension, sharing live footage from the ocean deep shot by divers using high definition underwater cameras. In the true spirit of exploration, we embrace the unexpected, veering off our route to observe the bubble-net feeding behavior of humpback whales, for instance, or to get a better angle on a polar bear.

How would you characterize the landscapes and people of the Russian High Arctic? Arctic beauty is a subtle one. It takes some time and inner stillness to appreciate it. Let your eyes rest from the clutter of our saturated world and you’ll enjoy subtle tones and shades of colors, the emptiness, and the ever-stretching horizon. It is truly special. In the local indigenous communities, there is a strong sense of comradery and people rely on each other to survive in this harsh climate. What, for you, are some of the highlights of our new Exploring Russia’s Far East and Wrangel Island expedition? As a photographer, I am interested in human stories. Visiting local villages in Chukotka is definitely a highlight. During the trip, we will have an opportunity to see both how indigenous Chukchi and Yupik people live now, as well as the historic sites that they occupied centuries ago. How do you hope the experience of visiting Russia’s Far East will change the travelers who do so? I hope that travelers will use this rare opportunity to appreciate and learn about the local culture of this region. On a personal level, I believe that visiting the Arctic changes every single person. I’m not sure what it is exactly—perhaps it’s the light and the feel of the Arctic, like nowhere else, that stays with you forever.

H E A R F R O M O U R E X P E RT, E VG E N I A A R B U G A E VA National Geographic photographer Evgenia Arbugaeva was born in the small town of Tiksi on the shores of the Laptev Sea in northern Russia. Her work often examines her Arctic homeland, capturing its remote landscapes and the daily lives of its people. We asked Evgenia a few questions about her work and what travelers can look forward to on our new expedition, Exploring Russia’s Far East and Wrangel Island. See page 52 for the itinerary, and read the full interview on our website.

What keeps you returning to your homeland for photo projects? I grew up in the Arctic and I miss its empty space and quietness. Also, there are so many interesting stories to tell about my homeland. It is a treasure trove for a storyteller. Tell us about one of your most memorable National Geographic assignments in the region. My first assignment for National Geographic magazine was a story about “mammoth hunters”— native people of coastal Yakutia who excavate mammoth tusks from the permafrost. I spent two months following the hunters. This assignment sparked an interest in the Arctic islands, and now I am really looking forward to visiting Wrangel Island on board the National Geographic Orion. How would you encourage travelers to approach photography during this trip? I would suggest thinking of this trip as a story, where photographs are not only stand-alone images, but are part of a sequence.

The Sea Cloud, a four-masted square-rigger, was built in 1931 by Wall Street businessman E. F. Hutton for his wife, Marjorie Merriweather Post. Cabins and common areas are beautifully appointed with antiques and period-style furniture. The Sea Cloud carries 30 sails measuring a total of 32,000 square feet. They are raised by hand by a spirited crew, and guests have the chance to learn about their design and function during the voyage. Guests are welcome on the open bridge to learn how the Sea Cloud is navigated and sailed. While the ship is elegant, the atmosphere on board is relaxed and casual.
