RIVER CRUISES
AN ENRICHING EXPERIENCE Sailing the world’s waterways with National Geographic means charting a course less taken. Traveling aboard a world-class cruise ship, you’ll dock at intriguing ports of call, discovering destinations both storied and secret; and you’ll return to a sumptuous home base after each day’s activities. Whether we’re visiting a medieval hamlet or a legendary city, you’ll have the freedom to choose from among several available excursions. Tour a town or museum with your National Geographic expert, enjoy a wine tasting at a secluded vineyard, or set out on an active hike or bike ride—each day is yours to design. As we cruise between destinations, your National Geographic expert will give talks on board to provide context for the places we visit; and on European sailings, a National Geographic photographer is also on hand for photo talks. Evenings on the river are for enjoying incredible sunsets from the ship’s rooftop deck, or perhaps taking in a performance by local musicians and dancers who join us on board. On select nights, we’ll gather in a special spot—like a wine estate or baroque palace—for an elegant concert, meal, or party reserved exclusively for our guests. Over the past 130 years, we’ve sent our scientists, storytellers, and adventurers across continents and into remote cultures, down to the oceans’ depths and up to the highest mountains, in an effort to better understand our planet. National Geographic Expeditions grew from this legacy as a way to invite others to explore—to encounter the wonders of the world up close, in depth, right at the source—and to be transformed by the experience.
WHEN YOU TRAVEL WITH US, YOU MAKE A DIFFERENCE When you travel with us, you support the National Geographic Society’s researchers and explorers who work to preserve, protect, and advance our understanding of the planet and its people. Every year, the Society awards more than 575 grants to scientists, educators, innovators, and storytellers around the world. They are changing how we understand and interact with our planet—and helping to protect it for future generations. To learn more, visit www.natgeo.com/info. T R AV E L W I T H O U R E X P E R T S One of the great advantages of traveling on a National Geographic River Cruise is the team that accompanies each expedition: passionate adventurers whose expertise gives context and depth to our experiences on the ground and on the water. Each trip is appointed a National Geographic expert—such as a historian, author, or archaeologist—who gives talks on board and accompanies daily outings; and a National Geographic photographer joins all European sailings, offering professional tips on technique and artistry to help you capture the incredible moments from your trip on camera. Below, meet some of the inspiring people who will travel with us in 2019.

A N I N T E R V I E W W I T H A U T H O R TERESA FISHER Teresa Fisher launched her travel writing career in Bavaria more than three decades ago, and has since penned more than 30 guidebooks, including National Geographic Traveler: Switzerland. Teresa will join the June 12, 2019 departure of our Rhine River Cruise: Amsterdam to Basel (page 12) and the August 1, 2019 departure of our Danube River Cruise: Budapest to Nuremberg (page 14). Read the full interview on our website.
For you, what are some of the highlights of the upcoming river trips you’re joining? On the Danube, it has to be Vienna. Like a catchy waltz tune, the city always makes my heart beat faster, with its extraordinary musical legacy, grand baroque architecture, and world-class museums. The Rhine cruise is a truly epic journey. I’m always struck by the picture-perfect villages, the number of castles and fortresses along the riverfront, and the sheer scale of the Gothic cathedral in Cologne.
What do you enjoy most about traveling by ship? All my life I’ve been messing about on boats—sailing, windsurfing, and holidaying on our family houseboat—so I always feel very at home on the water. Despite being a travel writer for the past thirty years, I’ve never quite mastered the art of packing light, so this mode of transport really suits me, as my hotel room simply comes along with me.
What fuels your passion for travel? Some of my greatest experiences in life have happened when I’ve gone out of my comfort zone while traveling—backpacking around Japan, dogsledding through Russia in the winter, and powerboat racing in the South Pacific all spring to mind as highlights. One thing is for certain: the more I travel, the greater my wanderlust.
A N I N T E R V I E W W I T H N AT I O N A L G E O G R A P H I C P H O T O G R A P H E R D AV E Y O D E R As a contributing photographer for National Geographic and National Geographic Traveler magazines, Dave Yoder has documented stories across the globe, from the high-tech search for a lost Leonardo da Vinci painting in Florence to the discovery of a forgotten city in the jungles of Honduras. Dave joins the May 29, 2019 departure of Cruising The Legendary Rivers of Europe. See page 16 for the itinerary, and read the full interview with Dave on our website.
Tell us about your favorite National Geographic assignment. One remarkable project that eventually became the August 2015 cover story for National Geographic magazine involved photographing Pope Francis and the Vatican. I spent months shooting nearly 70,000 photos for the project. Editing them down to around two dozen frames was a challenge. I was often working right beside the pontiff. It was at times otherworldly, surreal.
Why are the Danube, Main, and Rhine Rivers inspiring places for photographers? Cruising these rivers is like taking a trip through history, and the surrounding landscapes are easily romanticized, photographically speaking. Sunlit eddies border leafy shorelines, the people you meet along the way are friendly, and there are myriad things to explore at each stop. Or you can just sit back and take in the scenery, because exploring doesn’t always require extraordinary effort.
How will you encourage travelers to approach photography during this trip? I will encourage guests to take time between photographs to ask themselves what they want to capture—but not at the expense of missing a moment, of course! It should be fun, but it’s even more fun when you end your trip with a handful of photos that you’re proud of. There is no secret trick. And it doesn’t take years of practice to make a good, or even great, photograph.

By making a reservation on an Expedition, the participant agrees to allow his/her likeness to be used by National Geographic, National Geographic–authorized third parties, and Scenic Tours without compensation to the participant. If the participant prefers that his/her likeness not be used, he/she must notify National Geographic Expeditions and/ or Scenic Tours in writing prior to departure of the Expedition. Copyright in all photographs, video, and related materials created by the participant (“Expedition Materials”) will belong to the participant upon creation. The participant grants to National Geographic and Scenic Tours a non-exclusive, worldwide, irrevocable license to use any Expedition Materials provided to National Geographic Expeditions and/or Scenic Tours in any media for the following limited purposes: editorial use, promotion of this editorial use, promotion of National Geographic’s and Scenic Tours’ travel programs, or promotion of the mission of National Geographic or Scenic Tours.
Trip-cancellation insurance is available at an additional cost and is strongly recommended. For more information about and to enroll in an option available through Travel Insurance Services, visit the “Travel Insurance” section of the National Geographic Expeditions website at natgeoexpeditions.com. ITINERARY CHANGES: The itineraries and staff presented in the catalog or on the website are subject to modification and change by National Geographic Expeditions or Scenic Tours. Every reasonable effort will be made to operate Expeditions as planned, but alterations may still occur after final itineraries are sent. National Geographic Expeditions and Scenic Tours will use reasonable efforts to provide participants the Expedition booked in accordance with the itinerary. However, due to the nature of travel, it may not always be possible for National Geographic Expeditions and Scenic Tours to adhere strictly to the itinerary, and the ship operator may need to make alterations to the Expedition or itinerary, before or after the commencement of the Expedition. Where, due to circumstances outside of National Geographic Expeditions’, Scenic Tours’, or Other Providers’ control, these parties are unable to provide the Expedition in accordance with the itinerary, these parties will use reasonable efforts to: (i) provide reasonable notice of any alterations, though there may be circumstances beyond National Geographic Expeditions’ or Scenic Tours’ control in which alterations will be required with little, or no, advance notice; and (ii) provide or arrange appropriate alternative activities, transport, and accommodation as required. The circumstances in which the itinerary or the Expedition may be altered include: (i) high or low water levels in any river or canal; (ii) lock closures, unscheduled vessel maintenance, or other operational reasons; (iii) road, river, or weather conditions; (iv) national or local holidays affecting the closure of public buildings or attractions; (v) force majeure/acts of God; (vi) emergency events, accidents, injuries, or other incidents involving the participant or other participants; and (vii) any other event beyond National Geographic Expeditions’ or Scenic Tours’ control. Alterations to the itinerary or the Expedition may include: (i) substitution of vessels for part or the whole of an Expedition; (ii) cabin changes on a vessel; (iii) additional embarkations and disembarkations; (iv) substitution of alternate transportation, including the use of motor coaches; (v) substitution of hotel accommodation for accommodation on a vessel; (vi) alterations to arrival and departure times; (vii) alterations to sightseeing activities; and (viii) reductions or increases in the time spent at a location. If the ship operator substitutes any vessel, motor coach, or accommodation under this section, they will use reasonable efforts to provide participants with a substitution of equivalent specification or quality, though some services and facilities may not be available for all substitute arrangements. DOCUMENTATION: Participants are responsible for obtaining any documents required for their participation in the Expedition such as a valid passport (valid for at least six months after the participant’s return date), all visas, vaccination certificates, and any other documents. Failure to obtain documents does not negate the Terms and Conditions, and any extra costs incurred for rerouting due to travel without the necessary documents will be the participant’s responsibility. Participants shall indemnify National Geographic Expeditions and Scenic Tours for all penalties, fines, charges, losses, or expenses incurred or imposed upon National Geographic or Scenic Tours by virtue of an act or violation of law by the participant. HEALTH REQUIREMENTS: Participants must be in good physical and mental health. Any physical condition, diet, or treatment requiring special attention must be reported in writing when the reservation is made. National Geographic Expeditions encourages participants to consult a doctor for specific medical advice about any activities or destinations. Certain Expeditions may require that the participant obtain medical consent prior to departure as a condition of participation. Immunization requirements vary from country to country. Required inoculations, if any, must be recorded by the participant’s health practitioner on a valid vaccination certificate which the participant must carry for proof of inoculation where required. MEDICAL AUTHORIZATION AND COVERAGE: In the event the participant becomes sufficiently incapacitated as to be unable to direct his or her own care, there is no one on the Expedition who can direct participant’s care, and National Geographic Expeditions or Scenic Tours is unable or does not have time to contact participant’s emergency contact, the participant, by registering and paying a deposit for an Expedition, authorizes any medical treatment deemed necessary in the event of any injury or illness while participating in the activity including, but not limited to: X-ray, examination, anesthetic, medical or surgical diagnosis, or treatment and hospital care which is deemed advisable by, and is to be rendered under the general or specific supervision of, any physician and/or surgeon licensed in the United States, or, if in a foreign country and no physician licensed to practice in the United States is reasonably available, by a duly licensed physician deemed competent to render the necessary care. In addition, the participant certifies that they have medical insurance which will cover personal accidents, medical expenses, medical evacuation, air ambulance, loss of effects, repatriation costs and all other expenses which might arise as a result of loss, damage, injury, delay, or inconvenience occurring to the participant; or that in the absence of this medical insurance coverage, the participant agrees to pay all costs of rescue and/or medical services as may be incurred on the participant’s behalf.

ASSUMPTION OF RISK: By registering for an Expedition, the participant acknowledges that he/she is aware that travel such as the Expedition he/she is undertaking involves potentially dangerous activities, some in remote areas of the world, with a risk of illness, injury, or death which may be caused by forces of nature, illness, or by willful or criminal conduct of third parties or by terrorism. The participant further acknowledges that weather conditions may be severe, adverse, and/or unpleasant, and that medical services or facilities may not be readily available or accessible or consistent with standards in the United States during some or all of the time during which he/she is participating on the Expedition, and that when available may not be of the quality which exists in the United States. Cruising aboard a vessel used in an Expedition is provided solely by the ship operator of the relevant vessel pursuant to Scenic Tours’ or such Other Providers’ contract of carriage. The participant acknowledges that he/she will be subject to terms of any such contract(s) of carriage. CRUISE ENVIRONMENT, LOGISTICS, AND AMENITIES: Noise, Vibration, and Odor. While the operator will take reasonable steps to minimize noise, vibrations, and odors on the ships, each participant acknowledges and accepts that some noise, vibration, and intermittent odors may be experienced on ships and that none of National Geographic, Scenic Tours, or Other Providers will be liable to any participants for claims in relation to any such noise, vibration, or odors. Docking Position. During port stops, ships may dock side-by-side, obstructing views and requiring participants to pass through other ships to embark and disembark. Service of Alcoholic Beverages. Responsible service of alcohol is adhered to by all staff on board the ships, and ship staff reserves the right to refuse service. The all-inclusive beverages policy does not apply to any third party suppliers or Other Providers. Internet Service. Internet facilities are available on board each Scenic ‘Space-Ship’ or Scenic Aura cruise at no additional charge. Complimentary internet service does not apply to any third party suppliers or Other Providers. Internet availability and quality may vary from country to country and can also be affected by technical issues, weather, or unfavorable terrains and other factors outside of National Geographic Expeditions’ or Scenic Tours’ control. Scenic Tours does not guarantee the availability or quality of internet connections. Scenic Tailormade. Personal devices are provided in all suites on board a Scenic Space-Ship for use both on board and on shore. They are not available in Portugal or Myanmar. Entrance fees, gratuities, and transportation while using Scenic Tailormade are not included in the price of the Expedition. Scenic Tailormade Tour/Journeys and their content cannot be guaranteed in all locations. Scenic Sundowner. Scenic Sundowner is a seasonal highlight and is included for sailings departing from April 1 to September 30. Depending on sailing date, the event may not be held during sunset. Scenic Culinaire. Scenic Culinaire is offered on board Scenic Diamond and Scenic Sapphire Space-Ships only while sailing in France. Scenic Culinaire cooking school has limited capacity and may not be able to accommodate every participant on every Expedition. Cooking classes held in Scenic Culinaire will be hosted by the on board culinary team. Itinerary may vary on location and inclusion of the cooking school. Registrations are made on board. Scenic Freechoice. All Scenic Freechoice activities can be booked while on Expedition with the Cruise Director or Expedition Director (unless otherwise stated) and are subject to availability, and seasonal and operational factors. Some activities require a minimum and maximum number of participants to operate. Scenic Enrich. It may not always be possible to offer every Scenic Enrich activity in the itinerary, brochure, or catalog. Wherever possible, suitable alternatives will be provided without liability to the participant. PRIVACY POLICY: Our privacy policy can be found at nationalgeographic.com/community/privacy/.
