ph DIRECTOR. DFFFNSF INTEL I IGFNCE AGENCY

ike each of you, I count myselflucky and honored to serve our nation as an intelligence professional during this critical time in our history. And it is a special privilege for me to have assumed command of the Defense Intelligence Agency this year. While we are united in sharing the distinction that accompanies our special mission, many of us are nevertheless separated by geography, targets, time and different mission disciplines. For the first time in nearly half a century, the majority of DIA employees work outside the Washington, D.C., area. This photo essay provides a candid and personal look at an agency engaged in the nation’s most sensitive work arotind the world, including in direct support of our military forces. As you can tell from the photos, we do so with a focus on the mission, determination and often a healthy sense of humor. This collection reminds us that, while we should take pride in our individual offices and directorates, we are part of a larger agency with a well-deserved reputation for excellence, honesty, integrity and a willingness to cooperate with partners and allies. As you look through these pages, take pride in your contributions, and your special service with the Defense Intelligence Agency.

9/11 Memorial Dedicated at DIAC

I a ceremony held at the DIAC Sept. 11, past and present agency leaders dedicated a memorial to the seven DIA employees who lost their lives in the attack Rosa on the Pentagon Sept. 11,2001 Chapa, Sandra Foster, Robert Hymel, Shelley Marshall, Patricia Mickley, Charles Sabin and Karl Teepe.

Jn

Speakers at the ceremony inctuded current DIA Director LTG Ronald Burgess Jr. and retired VADM Thomas Wilson, who served as DIA director from July 1999

to July 2002. families of four of the lost DIA employees attended the dedication ceremony, along with members of the work force. “The memorial will stand as a permanent part of this agency in the same way our lost colleagues will remain in our hearts and memories,” said LTG Burgess. “More than others, this day reminds us of the dangers and threats we face and the importance of our mission in providing the military intelligence required to defend this nation.”

No need to mark it down, it’c a day we’ll always remember, Theyear is200l, the day is 11 September. Nothing was more amazing than those scenes ofdevastation, Except immediately thereafter, when we began a creation. A creation oflongedfor unity, unity longedfor indeed, A creation whichjoined together alt colors, regardless ofnationality or creed. See, it was not the last straw per say, and definitely not the ending, It was more ofan awakening, maybe even a beginning. SFCI)onnie Young, DS 1,,_rqrited
