GEOGRAPHY AW ARENESS WEEK Geography Awareness Week (GAW) has been celebrated internationally in the third week of November since 1987. The week of activities culminates in the recognition of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Day which is a grassroots event that formalizes the practice of GIS. On this day, geospatial users and vendors open their doors to schools, businesses, and the general public to showcase real-world applications of this important technology and how it can be used for decision-making and problem solving. The Land Information Council of Jamaica (LICJ)/National Spatial Data Management Division and stakeholders have been celebrating GAW and GIS Day for the past 15 years with technical seminars, expositions and business executive for decision-making and problem solving. The 25th anniversary of the establishment of the LICJ will be celebrated during GAW 2017.
GAW 2017 ‘Security and safety’ is a major development concern for the Jamaican and other Caribbean societies. The focus area for Geography Awareness Week (GAW) 2017 is therefore ‘Geospatial Technologies: Mapping Our Way to Secure Communities.’ Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and associated technologies can be used to address major national security and public safety challenges. GIS tools offer the capability of monitoring, predicting and countering threats while helping to strategize and support field operations. The use of advanced spatial analytical techniques and imaging technologies enables the continuous flow of data between intelligence, law enforcement agencies and security companies in pre, real time and post operations. In recognition of the LICJ 25th anniversary a newspaper supplement, Jingle, map, essay, poster competitions and Spatial App Challenge will be held with specific launch dates during the year leading up to GIS day on November 15, 2017. The objective of these competitions is to highlight the successes in utilizing GIS and related technologies over the 25 years and how GIS is being implemented within Jamaica, as well as its applicability across various sectors in particular the focus area of national security and public safety.
