From the Director

t has been a phenomenal year for the National Sporting Library & Museum. Huge strides were made in all three areas of our mission preserving, promoting, and sharing the literature, art and culture of equestrian, angling and field sports. Each year, the NSLM staff works diligently to preserve both our Library & Museum collections. In 2015, the Library launched and continued to work on a variety of projects including archiving and cataloguing the thousands of books, journals, photographs, and other ephemera within the collection. Expanding storage for the Library collection was given top priority during the year as our collection grew to over 26,000 books and 73 archives. The NSLM reached out to more sporting enthusiasts, art lovers, bibliophiles, researchers, friends, supporters, educators, and like-minded organizations than in any previous year. Through our programming, events, website, Facebook, partnerships, and involvement in community activities, the NSLM made connections with thousands of people who are excited to be part of our mission. The ability to share the Library & Museum collections grew exponentially in 2015 with the help of the Internet. By posting information about pieces in our collections to our blog, Drawing Covert, sporting enthusiasts from countries as far reaching as Argentina, Saudi Arabia, Australia, Russia, Ireland, France, and the United Kingdom learned about the treasures that reside in Middleburg, Virginia. Similarly, the Libraryâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s digitization initiative that began in 2015 will soon allow visitors near and far the ability to access the entire Library collection on-line. Just as we strive to preserve and care for the pieces in our collections, we work just as hard keeping the facility that houses these collections safe, secure, and well-maintained. To that end, a variety of improvements were made last year to the security system, the HVAC system, and the interior finishes at both the Library and the Museum. The campus exterior also received some needed improvements. As with other non-profits, the NSLM relies on membership support and donations to help reach our mission. In 2015, we gained 128 new members and received $750,000 in contributions and grants, sure signs that the NSLM is connecting with more and more people and gaining momentum with regard to support. Over 8,000 people visited the Library & Museum to enjoy our exhibitions or to participate in programs in 2015. That number continues to grow and we wish to thank everyone who came for a visit and then returned to bring friends and family. Building upon the interest and excitement in 2015, we believe 2016 will be extraordinary!

5TH ANNUAL BENEFIT POLO MATCH & BRUNCH The sole fundraiser for the National Sporting Library & Museum in 2015 was held on Sunday, September 13 at the Virginia International Polo Club in Upperville, Virginia. More than 400 guests attended the event which featured the best female polo players in the world competing in a rare 25-goal “supermatch.” Proceeds from this event enabled the NSLM to offer 60 public programs, host seven art exhibitions, and welcome more than 8,000 visitors. DIGITIZATION PROJECTS

PERIODICALS CATALOGING PROJECT

The NSLM worked on two projects to digitize materials in its care in 2015. These projects included both video clips and over 280,000 microfilm images of print materials dating to the 18th century. The product of these efforts is planned for online research access in the future, and both projects were made possible through the generous support of Mrs. Helen K. Groves and Mrs. Frances Massey Dulaney. In addition to making available digital files in the Library’s collections, NSLM is exploring digitization and content partnerships with libraries, associations, and publications across the sporting community. An initial survey prompted responses from eight interested sporting organizations.

In May 2015, NSLM received a contribution from Ann Wilson of Maplewood, New Jersey toward cataloging all issues of periodicals in the NSLM collection. Ms. Wilson’s contribution of $1,000 funded a part-time employee dedicated to the project over the summer. The project began by cataloging historical periodicals such as Porter’s Spirit of the Times and Turf, Field and Farm. After these titles were completed, the project continued with the rest of the periodical backfile cataloging titles beginning with “A” to titles beginning with “C.” We will continue work on the project as resources become available. NSLM is grateful to Ms. Wilson for making this progress possible. The Library would like to thank Mary Beth Sinclair, M.D. for her additional donation of a subscription to The Double Gun & Single Shot Journal in honor of Norman V. Sinclair.

ARCHIVE PROJECTS This year the Library kicked off a project to re-house and inventory its archival collections. The project will relocate all archive collections to a secure research room and will make more efficient use of space in the storage of the collections. Updated finding aids were generated for all archival collections, and staff has begun working through a backlog of unprocessed archives. The archives project has afforded staff the opportunity to further explore the materials in the archives. Photographs in good condition have been reproduced electronically to share with NSLM’s followers on social media platforms, and print reproductions of images from the archives were created for display on the walls of the Library foyer. Proposed alterations to the Forrest E. Mars, Sr. Exhibition Hall would include open storage for works on paper and include display cases for letters, photographs, prints, and rare books. Evaluation of this proposal is underway.

STORAGE EXPANSION In 2015, NSLM staff and the Board of Directors began planning for an expansion of storage space in the Library to accommodate increased materials acquisition through donations. New shelving units are planned for the Main Reading Room and Lower Level Reading Room, with the majority of planned expansion coming through the installation of additional compact shelving on the Lower Level. Planned shelving would expand capacity by over 10,000 volumes and would include expansion of oversize storage capacity for the F. Ambrose Clark Rare Book Room.

ANNUAL AUCTION The NSLM’s collections are a direct reflection of the sporting community. Every year, the Library receives hundreds of volumes in donated books, periodicals, and other materials. Many of these materials are duplicates of objects in the Library collection. When a duplicate is received, the one in better condition is retained and the extra copy is sold. All proceeds from the sale of duplicate books go to the care and maintenance of the Library’s collections. Each fall, the Library makes a selection of high-quality duplicates available for purchase to NSLM members through the Annual Auction. In 2015, the NSLM is grateful to donor Childs Burden for donating a selection of sporting prints from his collections as additions to the Annual Auction. Print lots sold Book lots sold

ibrary acquisition In February 2015, NSLM acquired the book Gallant Fox: A Memoir, privately printed at the Derrydale Press in 1931. The book chronicles the career of Gallant Fox, the winner of the United States Triple Crown in 1930, and was written by the horse’s owner, William Woodward, the year after Gallant Fox was retired to stud. It is among the rarest of all Derrydale Press books, and there are only five known copies in existence. The NSLM’s new copy is numbered “1 of 50.” The addition of Gallant Fox: A Memoir is a major accomplishment in making all Derrydale titles accessible for research at NSLM. We are exceedingly grateful for the support of the following donors, without whom this acquisition would not have been possible: Timothy Greenan, Helen K. Groves, Manuel Johnson, and Jacqueline B. The NSLM art collection includes paintings, sculpture, works on paper, and decorative art objects ranging from the 17th through 21st centuries. Thanks to the generosity of our donors, the collection now numbers over 1,000 pieces. With the exception of only a very few purchases, the majority of the collection has been acquired through direct gifts and bequests. We remain grateful to all the collectors who have gifted works of art or have promised future gifts in bequests. Since 2007, the NSLM has hosted the fellowship program in honor of the legacy of sportsman and book collector John H. Daniels (1921-2006). Past Fellowship recipients include post-graduate students, authors, curators, professors and scholars researching a variety of subjects related to field sports. The diversity of Fellows’ projects reflects the wide variety of material within the F. Ambrose Clark Rare Book Room and the NSLM collections. Faithfulness to Nature: Paintings by Edward Troye October 26, 2014 - March 29, 2015 The exhibition of 42 paintings and sketches and accompanying catalog explored the esteemed 19th-century equestrian painter Edward Troye’s place within American art history, and his important role in creating visual documentation of the development of American Thoroughbred bloodlines and this country’s rich racing heritage and culture. Highlights included many of the artist’s most recognized portrayals of important race horses, jockeys, and trainers active in this country during the antebellum period;

Troye’s first known surviving animal drawing; and two monumental mural-sized paintings. Loans from museums and private collections, as well as examples from the NSLM’s extensive holdings of Troye material were included. In conjunction with the museum display, an exhibition of archival material, original sketches, and prints, based on research by John H. Daniels Fellow Martha Wolfe, was displayed in the Library.

Sporting Accoutrements: The Still Lifes of Henry Koehler January 16, 2015 - May 31, 2015 Twenty-four intimate and contemplative paintings of fox and stag hunting, racing, polo, fishing, and shooting paraphernalia by the recognized sporting painter Henry Koehler were brought together to highlight the artist’s deep knowledge and almost hallowed respect for the objects he paints, evoking the very nature of their use. His often quiet, introspective works convey the artist’s sense of observation, color, and composition and echo the sentiments of sporting

and art enthusiasts, both past and present. An elegant, articulate, and sophisticated man, Koehler easily moved through international sporting circles sketching and painting many of the major race courses and tracks, polo events, and hunts in the U.S., England, France, and Italy. He has touched on, not just equestrian pursuits, but most all of the traditional turf and field sports in his work.

Art and the Animal: Society of Animal Artists Exhibition April 18, 2015 - August 30, 2015 The National Sporting Library & Museum was the final venue to host Art and the Animal, the 54th annual Society of Animal Artists’ (SAA) exhibition. The 2015 exhibition opened with 125 works of art at the Wildlife Experience, a wildlife conservation museum in Parker, Colorado, on August 23, 2014. From

this, sixty paintings, works on paper, and sculptures of domestic and wild animals were chosen by the SAA Selection Jury to travel. This selection was on view at two other venues before coming to the NSLM.

Part of the Pack: The Hunt at Petworth, Colin Barker Photography June 19, 2015 - January 10, 2016 Part of the Pack: The Hunt at Petworth captured a behind-thescenes portrayal of life with the Chiddingfold, Leconfield and Cowdray Hunt. Fifteen images of foxhunting, kennel, and puppy show scenes were selected for exhibition at the NSLM. The entire series, comprised of sixty archival photographic prints, was first presented in 2012 at Lord and Lady

Egremont’s family stables at the historic Petworth House estate in England. Colin Barker notes that he formed the collection of mostly black and white images to “create a link between the undulating, picturesque landscape of the South Downs in Southern England and the gritty reality of dayto-day life for the huntsman and his hounds at the kennels.”

Beverly Sanford McConnell: Portraits in Poetry July 10, 2015 - December 13, 2015 The exhibition paid tribute to the champion equitation rider, horse trainer, riding instructor, and Middleburg-area resident Beverley Sanford McConnell (1919 –2013). McConnell was also a painter, sculptor, and poet for her personal enrichment. She began her training at the Grand Central School of Art in New York City, where she was awarded a medal for line drawing at the age of 14, and continued her studies at the Art Students’ League of New York for three years.

Even though the budding artist showed talent at an early age, her family notes that she was too shy to pursue a career in the arts. McConnell, however, left behind a personal and endearing body of work that echoes her love of horses and ponies. Portraits in Poetry: A Little Horse Book of paintings, drawings, and poetry by Beverley McConnell, compiled in 2012 by Beverley Bryant to document her mother’s work, was the impetus for the exhibition.

Paul Brown from the Permanent Collection August 29, 2015 - January 10, 2016 This special exhibition of works by American illustrator Paul Desmond Brown (1893 - 1958) included 30 works from the NSLM permanent collection; pencil and ink drawings, sketches, and watercolor. Original pencil drawings from some of Brown’s most popular books Spills and Thrills (1933), Ups and Downs (1936), and Good Luck and Bad (1940) were on view for the first time. The exhibition highlighted Brown’s steeplechase images from the 1930s.

In conjunction with the exhibition, the NSLM published Inaugural Llangollen Race Meeting Sketchbook. This collection of previously unpublished sketches by Paul Brown documents the glamorous steeplechase held at Llangollen Farm, in Upperville, Virginia, in 1931. The book features an essay by racing historian Dorothy Ours.

Side-by-Side with Gun & Dog September 25, 2015 - March 20, 2016 Side-by-Side with Gun & Dog

explored the quintessential relationship between gunning enthusiasts and gun dogs in eighteenth- through twentiethcentury British, European, and American portraits and landscapes. The ambitious loan exhibition organized by the NSLM brought together over forty paintings and sculpture from public and private collections by such important artists as: Benjamin Marshall, Richard Ansdell, Thomas Hewes Hinckley, Charles Olivier de Penne, William Tylee Ranney, Arthur Burdett

Frost, Arthur Fitzwilliam Tait, and Percival Rosseau. The works represented many changes over time. Among these differences were: nationalities, participants, dog breeds, conformation (the shape or structure of an animal), firearms technology, game laws, types of game, the landscape, and artistic styles. The exhibition explored these changes, but at the same time reinforced the foundation of the sport - the rapport between the human figure and the canine which remains a constant throughout.

“In 1857, compelled by a perceived lack of literature on the subject, Mrs. J. Stirling Clarke authored The Ladies’ Equestrian Guide as a succinct manual to riding for women. The book is thoroughly a product of its time, and focuses on the proprieties of Victorian horsemanship. The Library security system was upgraded and integrated with the Museumâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s security system in 2015. The integration, which eliminated two different systems and companies monitoring the Museum and the Library, was a major improvement. Upgrades were also made to the HVAC system in both the Library and Museum. This included upgrading the Desert Air conditioning unit for the F. Ambrose Clark Rare Book Room. The new unit allows the room to be at a constant 66 degree temperature and 50 percent humidity with very tight tolerances, which is an optimal enviroment for the rare book collection. Work performed to the HVAC system were one of several capital improvements that were made during the year. Three outdoor sculptures were installed on the NSLM campus in 2015. More than simply placing the sculptures on top of the landscape, great attention was paid to making sure they were going to be safe and secure. First, concrete pads were poured under the sculptures to create a solid foundation. Then painted steel plates were made and bolted to the concrete pad below and to the sculpture above. Layering in the plate provides maximum security and safety of the sculptures. Once the sculptures were secured and in place, landscape materials integrated them into their surroundings (pictures at right). Over 100 bushes and trees were installed on the NSLM campus including Kwanzan Cherry, Lacebark Elm, October Glory, White Pine, and Eastern Red Cedar. In addition, the shrubbery in the front circle was reorganized and replaced to allow for easier navigation and viewing of the Civil War Horse Memorial. LED landscape lights also now shine on the Horse at night (pictures below).

Five additional pole lights were installed in the parking lot to complete the lighting of the parking area. These lights were added mostly for use during evening events and are manually turned on and off. The historical look of the lights are in keeping with the town of Middleburg street lighting (picture at right). Additionally, solar landscape lights were installed around the campus to create easier navigation at nightfall. A mulch walking path was installed from the corner of the Museum sidewalk to the corner of Main Street and The Plains Road. We are thrilled to have a direct route for Town visitors to access the NSLM campus. The new path is also safer for pedestrians who would otherwise have to walk alongside The Plains Road to enter the campus (picture at right). In 2015, several southern yellow pine floor boards were replaced in both the upper and lower levels of the Vine Hill building of the Museum (picture at bottom right). Aged southern yellow pine, an authentic replacement of the flooring, was used in keeping with the historic materials used when the structure was built in 1804. Aged wood pine was also used to repair areas of the Founders’ Room floor in the Library. Flat screen monitors previously donated to the NSLM were installed in both the Founders’ Room and the Museum. These monitors are used to display information about NSLM programs, events and exhibitions, recognize members, and in the Founders’ Room, serve as a tool for digital presentations (picture below).

22% 25% ABOUT US The National Sporting Library & Museum (NSLM) is located in Middleburg, Virginia, the heart of beautiful hunt country. Founded in 1954, the renowned research library and art museum highlight the rich heritage and tradition of country pursuits. Angling, horsemanship, shooting, steeplechasing, foxhunting, flat racing, polo, coaching, and wildlife are among the subjects one can explore in the organizationâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s general stacks, rare book holdings, archives, and art collection. The NSLM, a 501(c)3 non-profit, is most proud of utilizing the majority of the organizationâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s $1.5 million budget on educational

programs, exhibitions, events, outreach initiatives, partnerships, and community activities that directly serve its mission of preserving, promoting, and sharing the literature, art, and culture of equestrian, angling, and field sports.
