Auction Rules 1. The National Sporting Library & Museum Annual Auction is a benefit to NSLM Members at all levels. All bidders must hold an active NSLM Membership to bid. 2. Bids may be submitted by e-mail to JConnolly@NationalSporting.org or by mail using the bid sheet at the back of this catalog. When corresponding, please list the lots for which bids are being submitted, as well as maximum bid amount. We will make every effort to notify bidders if their maximum bid is exceeded. In case of multiple bids of the same amount, the bid received earliest will be recognized as the high bid. Telephone bids will not be accepted. 3. Bidding will begin at 10:00 a.m. EDT on Monday, May 1 and will end at 5:00 p.m. EDT on Friday, July 7. Only bids recieved by the ending date will be recognized; postmarks will not govern. 4. Lots will be listed with a Minimum Bid. Bids must be made in whole dollar amounts over the minimum amount. 5. Lots will be listed with a Direct Purchase price. Bids at the Direct Purchase price will preclude bidding on the lot in question. In case of multiple Direct Purchase bids on the same lot, the bid received earliest will be recognized as the winning bid. 6. All lots will be available for viewing at NSLM on Saturday, June 17, 2017. 7. Winners will be contacted following the end of the auction. Shipping for all won lots will be calculated separately from the bid amount. 8. All books are used, and are listed with brief condition information. All works of art are already matted and framed, and listed size is measured with frame included. Purchases may be returned within seven days of receipt if the buyer is not satisfied. 9. Senior NSLM Staff members and their immediate family members may not bid in the Annual Auction. 10. Although donations to NSLM are tax deductible, Annual Auction purchases are not. 11. Introduction The National Sporting Library & Museum (NSLM) continues to grow and develop as we preserve, promote, and share the literature, art, and culture of equestrian, angling, and field sports. In 2017, many large projects are coming to fruition in the Library, all of which will increase ease of access to our 27,000 volumes and 75 archival collections. This year, our Annual Auction is a critical fundraiser to continue our work as our audience and collections continue to grow. A major storage expansion has been completed this year, increasing the Library’s capacity by 12,000 volumes. This will alleviate overcrowding on our shelves. New wayfinding signage is being designed to make easy, legible access to our collections a reality. Further, NSLM continues working on making digital collections available online for researchers around the world. These projects are increasing efficiency for a collection that is seeing unprecedented demand for access from the sporting and research communities. In 2016, NSLM lent 114 books to other libraries through the interlibrary loan system. During that same period, NSLM’s librarians answered 454 requests for reference or research assitance, and the Library welcomed 2,381 visitors to use the collection. A constant theme for NSLM has been continued growth of donated materials. Last year, NSLM received over 20,000 books through donation, and we have shifted our Annual Auction to May and June to help find new homes for these collectible sporting duplicates. The Annual Auction will also be augmented with a Big Book Sale on June 17, and duplicates are also for sale online (from the NSLM website, click on “Support,” then “Book Sale”). Thank you for your continued support of NSLM and its collections. With your support, we continue to grow and develop new ways to serve the sporting community. Lot E - Hurry! By Frank Benson, 1915. Rare drypoint etching, one of 50 produced. 10 ½ x 9 ½ inches, framed and matted. Benson (1862-1951) is credited as the founder of the school of the American sporting print and one of the most accomplished artists to work within that genre.

Benson’s drypoint etchings received rave reviews during his lifetime, with some being so vibrant that admirers swore he was working in color. This piece served as the frontispiece for Print Connoisseur in 1922.

This tiny etching (within the frame, the original is approximately four inches by two inches) displays Benson’s mastery of the medium, as tiny individual pine needles are meticulously recorded.

Lot H - Everglade Kites By Robin Hill, 1971. Lithograph, 29 x 35 ½ inches, matted and framed. Signed by the artist. Number 73 of 350. Robin Hill (b. 1932) was born in Australia before his family moved to England. He trained in art at Wimbledon School of Art, the National Gallery of Art School, and the Royal Melbourne College. Hill’s love of nature and passion for the outdoors is reflected in his meticulous attention to detail in his portrayal of wildfowl. He continues to paint from his studio in Washington, D.C.

Lot I - Beach Stone-Curlew By Robin Hill, 1964. Watercolor painting, 24 x 32 inches, framed. Hill’s early works began with watercolor paintings of birds, drawing on childhood experiences outdoors that honed his powers of observation. Hill left academia partway through his studies to explore the Australian wilderness for three years before returning to finish his degree in art and design. He continuously developed his art, eventually leading to successful exhibitions of his paintings in Melbourne, New York, Sydney, London, and Washington, D.C. Hill relocated to the United States in 1971.

Lot J - Upland Gunning and Woodcock This Lot includes two items: a signed, deluxe edition copy of Upland Gunning by William Schaldach (1946, no. 108 of 150 copies sold), and a beautiful original watercolor by Schaldach of a woodcock, used to illustrate the book. These items were donated to our Annual Auction as a set, and are a beautiful combination for the sporting collector. The signed copy is in excellent condition, and comes with a clamshell slipcase custom-built for this book. The book contains many illustrations by Schaldach, including color plates and printed etchings. The watercolor painting of a woodcock comes framed and matted, and measures 25 x 30 inches in frame.

CURRENT AND UPCOMING EXHIBITIONS Andre Pater: In A Sporting Light On view through August 13, 2017 “Go beyond the mere image, and the painting becomes a ‘matter of light,’” notes sporting art authority Lorian Peralta-Ramos of contemporary sporting artist Andre Pater’s work. Peralta-Ramos who is a National Sporting Library & Museum Board Member lent her expertise as guest curator for the upcoming exhibition, Andre Pater: In a Sporting Light, working with the artist to identify over forty-five works from private collections across the country. The bold and vibrant compositions of Pater are often compared to those of the great 20th Century British sporting artist Sir Alfred Munnings. Pater’s refinement in pastels in addition to the classic medium of oil solidifies his rightful place as a formidable artist in the 21st century. The retrospective exhibition and accompanying catalog present an in-depth analysis of Pater’s mastery of the use of light and insightful understanding of animal anatomy, behavior, and motion.

The Horse in Ancient Greek Art exhibition features Greek vases and sculpture from the 8th through the 4th centuries BCE drawn from a private collection, the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, and other museum collections. The exhibition and accompanying publication explore the significance of the horse in ancient Greek culture, the superb horsemanship skills of the ancient Greeks, and imagery of the horse in ancient myth, war, sport, and competition. From some of the earliest examples of the horse in Greek art, to stunning examples of black and red-figured vases, the objects on view illustrate ancient equestrian life.
