Letter from theChair

Event chair Juliana E. May and her “Committee,” Richard May

À VOTRE SANTÉ! Welcome to the 2017 NSLM Polo Classic, played at Great Meadow for the second year. The Sheila C. Johnson Grass Polo Field is in marvelous condition, and, if the weather gods smile on us again, you are in for a treat. We built some “Traditions along the Boards” last year, and we add to them this year. A Dubai Team will take the field against a returning British Military Team in the Founders Cup Match inaugurated last year. In addition, you will see a series of seven “Tailgate Pavilions” this year. In the Mars Cup Match, Nacho Figueras, international polo star, returns as Captain of the returning Beverly Equestrian/Cria Yatay Team, sponsored by Bill Ballhaus. John Gobin, the NSLM Polo Master, returns as Captain of the opposing Greenhill Winery Team, sponsored by David Greenhill. The play for this match promises to be vigorous and fast-paced with the Greenhill Team looking for a win. Also returning from last year – and building the NSLM Polo Classic traditions – are famed equestrian poster artist, Greg Montgomery, the Old Guard Mounted Honor Guard from Arlington, the St. Andrew’s Society of Washington D.C. Pipe Band, and the parade of the Orange County Hounds led by Huntsman Reg Spreadborough. West Coaster Ray Regan returns as the lively announcer for the day. Everyone who participates today, from the General Admission guests to our returning Event Sponsor, Salamander Hotels & Resorts, can claim success. There are many new corporations and individuals who join our core of legacy sponsors, and to them we extend a warm welcome. There will be magnificent play on the field, refreshments, and camaraderie enjoyed no matter where you are along the boards. Proceeds from this event help to support NSLM in its important mission: preserving, promoting, and sharing the literature, art, and culture of equestrian, angling, and field sports – and extending its marvelous outreach to our communities, whether local, domestic, or international. Savor friendships and the day! We look forward to seeing you in 2018! Very truly yours, Juliana E. May, Chair

Exhibitions Currently On View THE HO R S E IN ANCIENT GREEK ART On view Sept 9, 2017 - Jan 14, 2018

Organized by the National Sporting Library & Museum and the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts From myth and legend, to warfare and transportation, to leisure, sport, and Olympic competition, the horse played an integral role in ancient Greek culture. As symbols of wealth, power, and status, horses appear on the finest examples of ancient art and d pottery. Imagery of both mythical and real horses fill Greek mythology, legend, and history and appear throughout ancient art. Vase-paintings depicting chariot horses being harnessed, jockeys riding, and grooms tending to well-bred steeds celebrate ancient sport and competition. Scenes of the care, training, and competition of the ancient sport horse and ancient texts on the Greek art of horsemanship bear striking resemblances to the horsemanship of today. The Horse in Ancient Greek Art features Greek vases, sculpture, and coins from the 8th through the 4th centuries BCE drawn from private collections, the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, the Tampa Museum of Art, and other museum collections. The exhibition and accompanying publication explore the significance of the horse in ancient Greek culture, and imagery of the horse in ancient myth, war, sport, and competition. From some of the earliest examples of the horse in Greek art, to stunning examples of black and red-figure vases, the objects on view illustrate ancient equestrian life. Commemorative Poster Artist GREG MONTGOMERY

Sporting artist Greg Montgomery created the 7th Annual Polo Classic commemorative poster featuring original artwork titled The Pinnacles (shown at right). “With this, our second Polo Classic poster, we wanted to showcase the worldclass players in close-up polo action played out before a background of handsome patrons under the pinnacles of the great viewing pavilion. The title of this piece, ‘The Pinnacles,’ came easily,” observed artist Greg Montgomery, “the pinnacles of the tent, the most successful point, culmination — of attendees, players, ponies, and place.” Montgomery is no newcomer to creating poster artwork. He is known for the long-running annual poster series he began creating for the Travers Stakes in Saratoga in 1986. He applies his bold and colorful graphic style to the wide range of scenery one might encounter at an equestrian event, whether a polo match or a horse race. He received his formal art training at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque, NM, where he studied painting and lithography, and at the College of St. Rose in Albany, NY, where he studied serigraphy. Polo Rules & Terms Polo is played between teams of four players on a field measuring 300 yards by 160 yards. As in most sports, each team endeavors to score goals and prevent goals for the opposing team. Polo is played on horseback, and players score by using a mallet to drive the ball into the opponent’s goal, marked by two ten-foot high posts situated eight yards apart. After a goal, teams change sides of the field.

Handicap A handicap is a rating given annually to a player to indicate his skill level relative to another player. Handicaps range from -2 to 10 (the best), and it is common to refer to a player’s handicap in terms of “goals.” For example, you may hear someone refer to a player by saying, “He is three goals,” which means he has a handicap of three.

In a match, players are numbered One through Four, a number corresponding to the player’s role on the field.

Hook A player may use his mallet to block or interfere with an opponent’s swing, but only if he is on the side where the swing is being made or directly in front of or behind the opponent. If the player reaches over, under, or across the opponent’s horse, it is called a “cross hook,” which is a foul.

One This player’s main duty is to score goals and neutralize the number Four player on the opposing team. This position is often played by the player with the lowest handicap. Two This player also can score but will often bear more defensive capabilities than the number One player. Three This player must be flexible, scoring goals and providing defense for the team. The number Three player is often the team’s best player. Four This player is responsible for defending against scoring attempts by the opposing team.

Penalty When one team commits a foul, the opposing team is awarded a free hit toward the goal. The severity of the foul will determine the type of penalty shot that is awarded. Most penalties are taken from the halfway line, 60 yards from the goal, 40 yards from the goal, or 30 yards from the goal. Pony Goal This is a goal scored by a horse kicking the ball through the goal posts.

The rules of polo are devised for the safety of the ponies and their riders. The most prominent rule is the “line of the ball.” As the ball is struck, the line of travel creates a “right of way” for the player who struck the ball. Other players are restricted in their approach along this line.

Safety Also known as a Penalty 6, a safety is a foul that occurs when a defending player hits the ball across his own backline. The other team is awarded a free shot 60 yards out.

Appealing For a Foul When a player tries to influence an umpire’s call, usually by raising the mallet up in the air or by swinging it in a windmill fashion.

Sideboards These optional boards, which cannot exceed 11 inches in height, extend the length of the field to mark the sidelines. A player may cross out of bounds to make a play so long as the ball remains in bounds. But when the ball goes over the sideboards, it is out of bounds and play stops. Then, the two teams will line up at the point where the ball left the field of play and the umpire will throw the ball in between them.

Bump A bump, also called a ride-off, is when one player rides into another player in an attempt to gain or keep possession of the ball. If done improperly, this maneuver can be dangerous for horses and riders. Chukker A polo match typically lasts 1.5 hours and each game is divided into seven-minute periods referred to as chukkers. In outdoor polo, a regulation chukker is usually seven minutes long but can be as long as seven minutes 30 seconds, with a warning horn that sounds at the seven-minute mark. Half-time lasts fifteen minutes. Chukkers are kept short for the sake of the polo ponies, which receive a rigorous workout during the match. In modern polo, players normally change horses as frequently as possible during a chukker, such as during a penalty or even after a goal. This provides the horses with rest that can prevent injury, but the game is not stopped for a midchukker horse change.

Throw-In A throw-in, also known as a “bowl in,” is when the umpire throws in the ball at the start of the game, at the beginning of each chukker, and every time a goal is scored. Time-out An umpire calls a time-out when there has been a foul or an accident, or at his discretion. A player also may call time-out if he is injured or he has broken a piece of tack. Time-out is not allowed for changing ponies or for replacing a broken mallet, although a player may do so at any time. Umpire In a polo match there are two mounted officials – one on each side of the field – known as umpires who enforce the rules of the game. It is customary to have a third official standing on the sidelines, who can be the deciding call when the umpires don’t agree.

Goal The object of the game is to score points by moving a ball down the field and hitting it through the goal posts. Any time this happens, it is a goal – even if it was the pony that knocked it across the goal line. After a goal is scored, teams switch sides. 12

Let’s not pave over the whole reason we came here in the first place. and clean water here locally, our own Goose Creek, which flows into Loudoun County’s Beaverdam Creek Reservoir, provides clean drinking water for thousands in Fairfax County. It is up to us, the residents and landowners in the community, to remain vigilant about the protection of our natural resources and this beautiful place we live. Together, we must continue to support responsible growth and celebrate landowners large and small, who are committed to preserving the environment and our way of life. Conservation easements and the preservation of open space is critical to more than the historic tradition of point-to-point racing, fox hunting, hiking, cycling, fishing and shooting sports in Hunt Country. It’s critical to the air we breathe and the water we drink. Let’s continue to support the protection of our magnificent landscape for everyone for generations to come.

We’re here because we love open space and this magnificent landscape. It’s frankly miraculous that Fauquier County doesn’t look like a Los Angeles suburb, with D.C. sitting less than 50 miles away. This beauty has been preserved thanks to many over the years with the foresight to protect it. There’s a growth spurt going on in the area, and that’s good. It’s good if the development respects zoning and easements that are in place to preserve open space. Open space, and the stunning landscape we enjoy, literally generates oxygen — the fresh air we breathe — and is critical to the natural process of purifying the water that flows into our streams and rivers. Two-thirds of America’s clean water supply comes from precipitation that is filtered through forests and ends up in streams. Natural landscapes and forests help prevent impurities from entering streams, lakes and ground water in a number of ways. Root systems of trees and other plants keep soils porous and allow water to filter through various layers of soil before entering ground water. Beyond safe
