Welcome to the National Sporting Library & Museum’s 7th Annual Polo Classic, to be held Sunday, September 10, 2017 at Great Meadow in the beautiful countryside of The Plains,Virginia. The 2017 Classic builds on traditions established last year under the banner of “Great Expectations at Great Meadow.” By all accounts, those great expectations were exceeded with descriptions like “classy,” “elegant,” and “exciting” dominating all reviews. Last year’s thrilling play on the field was matched by the gorgeous Founders Pavilion and seated luncheon. Tailgate and general admission guests found their own delightful, creative ways to enjoy the day. All of this was in celebration and support of the NSLM’s mission to preserve, promote, and share the literature, art, and culture of equestrian, angling, and field sports. Not only did sponsors and guests share in a glorious day of exciting, high-skilled polo, proceeds from the event help fund NSLM’s educational programs and exhibitions throughout the year. Guests at the 2017 Polo Classic can expect last year’s “firsts” to become this year’s “traditions.” Two matches - the Founders Cup and the prestigious Mars Cup will again be played on the Sheila C. Johnson Grass Polo Field. Major Mark Cann has committed a British Military Team to take the field in the Founders Cup. Nacho Figueras has committed to play for the Beverly Equestrian/Cria Yatay Team opposing the Greenhill Winery & Vineyards Team. Greg Montgomery has completed the 2017 Classic poster and it is gorgeous. Pavilion guests will be treated to an exquisite luncheon, premier seating, and handsome parting gifts. The Classic is a wonderful setting for both major sponsors and table sponsors to entertain existing friends and business associates and to make new ones. Plans are underway for pre-Classic events, similar to the swanky receptions hosted by Jacqueline Mars and Sheila Johnson last year, which offer additional opportunities for camaraderie and hospitality. We shall update you as those plans mature. Whether you are a returning sponsor or considering sponsorship for the first time, please join us in Building Traditions along the Boards. Wishing you the very best, Juliana E. May Chair, NSLM 7th Annual Polo Classic

T

he National Sporting Library & Museum’s annual Polo Classic benefit is a world-class event attracting international and celebrity polo players to come play at the nation’s premier equestrian center, Great Meadow, in The Plains, Virginia. Great Meadow has been home to the renowned Virginia Gold Cup race since 1985 and recently developed into an international equestrian center having hosted the final outing of the Land Rover U.S. Eventing Team before it competed at the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. John Gobin is an accomplished polo player who gained notoriety as the hero player on the winning US Team at the 1992 Westchester Cup, the long-running polo match between the United States and England. As Great Meadow Polo Manager, he is creating four powerhouse teams to play two matches at the 2017 Polo Classic. Just as in previous years, the line up will include top international polo players.

Former NSLM Polo Classic players include Nacho Figueras, Ralph Lauren model and Argentinian polo player best known for his success playing on the Black Watch Polo Team in Bridgehampton, NY, and avid polo player and celebrity, John Walsh, who produced and hosted the popular television show America’s Most Wanted. Mark Cann, Director of the Combined Services Polo Association in Britain, led the British Military Team in last year’s Polo Classic. He has played in Palermo, Ghana, India, and Pakistan, often with the Prince of Wales and his two sons. Teams from Greenhill Winery & Vineyards and Beverly Equestrian, led by local executives and polo officianados David Greenhill and Bill Balhaus, will be invited to field teams in the marquee six-chukker Mars Cup at this year’s event. Andre Pater A Matter of Light APRIL 14 - AUGUST 13, 2017

“Go beyond the mere image, and the painting becomes a ‘matter of light,’” writes sporting art authority Lorian Peralta-Ramos of contemporary artist, Andre Pater (Polish-American, b. 1953). “Horses, colorful jockeys’ silks, hounds, cattle are all textures and as surfaces, each have their own particular reflective properties.” Pater’s bold and vibrant compositions are often compared to those of the great 20th-century sporting artist Sir Alfred Munnings. Pater’s refinement in pastels in addition to the classic medium of oil solidifies his rightful place as an illustrious artist in the 21st century.

From myth and legend, to warfare and transportation, to leisure, sport, and Olympic competition, the horse played an integral role in ancient Greek culture. As symbols of wealth, power, and status, horses appear on the finest examples of ancient art and pottery.

Demonstrative, 2014 oil on canvas, 28 x 22 inches Private Collection © Andre Pater

Works gathered from collections across the country highlight Pater’s mastery of the use of light.

A GREAT DAY OF POLO AT GREAT MEADOW

G

uests celebrated a magnificent day of polo at the Sheila C. Johnson Grass Polo Field at Great Meadow on September 11th. Whether under the Founders Pavilion, as a tailgater along “Mallet Row,” or in the newlyinstituted general admission “Gallery,” more than 800 spectators were treated to a pair of exciting matches played under glorious skies. NSLM’s 2016 move to Great Meadow allowed many more spectators to be welcomed along the boards. The features of the day were the Founders Cup match begun this year followed by the traditional Mars Cup. Joining players at various times on the field were a Mounted Army Color Guard, the St. Andrews Society Pipes & Drums, and the Orange County Hounds. This year also saw an inaugural poster by famed Saratoga Springs and Travers Cup artist Greg Montgomery.

The Founders Cup was played by a British Military Team, captained by Major Mark Cann, pitted against a strong American Team, captained by Juan SalinasBentley. NSLM Board Member Jacqueline L. Ohrstrom tossed the opening ball, and NSLM Board Secretary Cathy M. Brentzel, sponsor of the match, awarded the Founders Cup. The Americans emerged victorious after a hard fought four chukkers by a score of 5-4. Major Mark Cann took Most Valuable Player honors. The Mars Cup, a six-chukker affair, featured two locally-sponsored teams, Greenhill Winery & Vineyards and Beverly Equestrian. Celebrity player John Walsh joined David Greenhill for Greenhill Winery & Vineyards while Nacho Figueras teamed with Bill Ballhaus of Beverly Equestrian. NSLM Vice Chairman Jacqueline B. Mars

tossed the opening ball. Players and polo ponies charged up and down the field at break-neck speeds, contesting every turn of possession. Beverly Equestrian claimed the match with a final score of 8-6. Jim Davis, President & CEO of DAVIS Construction and sponsor of the match, awarded the Mars Cup. David Greenhill was awarded Most Valuable Player. Dr. Manuel H. Johnson, NSLM Chairman of the Board, said, “The move to Great Meadow this year allowed us to increase the number of guests and to expand play to a second match. This is our principal fundraiser for the year, and its proceeds help fund NSLM’s many wonderful programs and activities throughout the year. We are especially pleased the Classic sold out. We offered ‘Great Expectations at Great Meadow’, and, by all accounts, we exceeded those expectations.” Polo Classic Event Chair and NSLM Honorary Board Member Juliana E. May, said she “was grateful for the enthusiastic support by all the guests and sponsors this year.” May, who has also agreed to chair the 2017 Polo Classic, said, “There is room to make next year’s Classic

bigger and more exciting, and yet retain its intimacy and excitement.” The theme for 2017 will be “Building Traditions Along the Boards,” making good on the “Great Expectations” theme of 2016. The 2017 Polo Classic will be played at Great Meadow on Sunday, September 10th, and ticket sales will open in early 2017.

Gilbert Joseph Holiday (British, 1879-1937), Hurlingham, c. 1925 pastel and crayon on paper, Private Collection In the composition, Hurlingham, c. 1925, by revered British sporting artist Gilbert Holiday, two British players with fresh polo ponies chat with an elegantly-dressed onlooker between chukkas. The impressionistic image captures the romance and flare of the English polo scene at the esteemed Hurlingham Club in London during the interwar period. The Club, first established as a pigeon shooting association in 1867, began to offer polo in 1874 and implemented the first code of rules for the sport in 1875. It was also host to the Westchester Cup during the years the prestigious international match was played in England, as well as the polo venue for the 1908 Olympic Games. Horace A. Laffaye, M.D., an authority on the history of international polo and an NSLM John H. Daniels Fellow, wrote in his book, The Evolution of Polo, in 2009, “The Hurlingham Club in Fulham has exerted more influence worldwide on the game than any other polo club.
