National Sporting Library & Museum 2018 ANNUAL REPORT

From the Director

A

s we transition into the long-awaited summer season, I relect back on 2018 with pride regarding the many accomplishments at the NSLM thanks to the support of our friends and donors. We are looking forward with great enthusiasm to what we have planned in 2019. This past year, we hosted several exceptional exhibitions, including the incredibly popular A Sporting Vision: The Paul Mellon Collection of British Sporting Art from the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, On Fly in the Salt: American Saltwater Fly Fishing from the Surf to the Flats from the American Museum of Fly Fishing, and Sidesaddle, 1690-1935, an exhibition co-curated by our own George L. Ohrstrom, Jr. Curator Claudia Pfeiffer and Dr. Ulrike Elisabeth Weiss, NSLM John H. Daniels Fellow and lecturer at the University of St Andrews in Scotland. These exhibitions attracted new and returning visitors alike with works from sporting favorites like George Stubbs and Alfred Munnings, as well as innovative and previously under-explored scholarship. In the Library, we welcomed the addition of our new digital book scanner, funded by the support of generous donors and a grant from The Ohrstrom Foundation. The scanner allows us to continue our long-term goal of making our collections digitally available to scholars around the world, helping to fulfill our mission and establishing NSLM as the premier research resource on equestrian, angling, and field sports. We were also fortunate to receive a collection of over 15,000 equestrian photographs from the family of Patricia MacVeagh. This wonderful gift is a most welcome addition to our expanding archive collections. NSLM’s diverse public programming, including Coffee with the Curator, Sunday Sketch, academic tours, and educational lectures, continued throughout 2018 with great success. Our Open Late summer concert series returned for a fourth year with the addition of many new community partners and entertained 1,129 attendees. Our Ambassador Program has grown in the last year and continues to be a valuable resource for introducing the NSLM’s programs, collections, and exhibitions to new audiences. We were privileged to receive donations and bequests of artwork in 2018, including more than ten works from the Estate of Milton Ritzenberg and over 150 photographic images from Judith and Jo Tartt, Jr. that span a century. With the help and generosity of many of our donors, the NSLM also acquired a prominent work by sculptor Herbert Haseltine and a significant racing painting by Alfred Munnings. Our successful programs, exhibitions, and community outreach have played an important role in growing our membership to 740 last year, a 15% increase. While heavy rain kept players from taking to the field last year, plans are well underway for our 2019 Polo Classic, which promises to be better than ever. We hope you will join us on Sunday, September 15, at Great Meadow in The Plains, VA, for the NSLM’s sole fundraising event and our “Mission in Motion!” We are looking forward to the continued success of our programs and events, large and small, in 2019. On behalf of all of us here at the NSLM, we look forward to seeing you soon. Best Regards,

Elizabeth von Hassell Executive Director

SCHOLARSHIP Since 2007, the NSLM has hosted over 60 research Fellows honoring the legacy of sportsman and book collector John H. Daniels (19212006). Past Fellowship recipients include post-graduate students, authors, curators, professors, and scholars researching a variety of subjects related to field sports. The diversity of Fellows’ projects relects the wide variety of material within the F. Ambrose Clark Rare Book Room and the NSLM collections. Topics included history, art, literature, anthropology, and sport, with research projects ranging from the architecture of horse stables, history of horsemanship, equestrian fashion, and poetry, to falconry, veterinary science, environmental conservation, and ly fishing. Dr. Charles Caramello is a Professor of English, and the Senior Advisor for Graduate Education at The University of Maryland. He was first accepted as a John H. Daniels Fellow for 2017 and conducted his research using several editions of Pembroke’s and Tyndale’s works in the NSLM’s collections. The book resulting from that research, Eighteenth Century Equitation: “Military Equitation; A Method of Breaking Horses and Teaching Soldiers to Ride” by The Earl of Pembroke & “A Treatise on Military Equitation” by William Tyndale with notes and commentary by Charles Caramello, was published in 2018. Dr. Caramello returned as a John H. Daniels Fellow for 2018 and is currently completing a book-in-progress, Horsemen, Horse Soldiers, and Grand Illusions, and is conducting research in the NSLM archives for a projected book on equitation between the two World Wars.

In 2018, the Library received a generous grant from The Ohrstrom Foundation for its digitization project. This project includes two elements: the scanning of NSLM’s rare books into a digital format and the hosting of digital content online. With the support of this grant and generous donations by Frances Massey Dulaney, Helen K. Groves, and Jacqueline B. Mars, the Library purchased a book scanner to be installed on the Library’s lower level. The NSLM’s Digital Repository, The Sporting Commons, came online in early 2019, making NSLM’s digital content available to researchers worldwide. The Sporting Commons digital repository can be found here: https://commons.nationalsporting.org/

SPECIAL PROJECTS MUSEUM

In the spring of 2018, all of the outdoor Over the last 20 years, the Civil War Horse had shifted on its pedestal. Last fall, conservator Ben Gage used a silicone adhesive to affix the statue to the base. Though not permanent, it will ensure that the horse will remain firmly in place.

LIBRARY

sculptures were cleaned and waxed by conservator Andrew Baxter. Wax is crucial for outdoor sculpture as it provides a layer of protection against the weather and other outdoor elements. Ideally, this process should be completed twice a year.

In 2018, the Library completed its reprocessing project in the F. Ambrose Clark Rare Book Room. The project, which began in 2017, included pulling and reorganizing all titles in the Library’s rare collections. Each volume was cataloged and assessed for condition. During this project the Library staff identified 200 volumes in need of conservation and repair, which will be included in the Library’s annual Book Adoption Program. During the project there were several ephemera collections identified, organized, and cataloged, making these papers, photographs, and other objects findable to researchers. The Library has since undertaken a new special project: cataloging all its periodical holdings. NSLM holds hundreds of periodical titles, including magazines, journals, stud books, newspapers, and much more. This project is scheduled to be completed in the summer of 2019.

FACILITIES All ceiling tiles were replaced and tray ceilings painted in the Library Main Reading Room and Director’s Office. New “Exit” signs were also installed.

Museum insulation improvements were made to stop moisture, and its associated hazards. The old batten was removed, and the underroof structure was insulated using spray foam. Two other areas, one in the Library and the other in the Museum’s receiving area/under the cottage, also benefited from new spray foam insulation. The Museum’s main water line, which was replaced in 2017, required a VDOT bond to be fulfilled. A large area of asphalt had to be replaced on Route 50. This was completed, and the VDOT bond was released. Major heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning (HVAC) repairs and improvements were implemented at both the Library and Museum. (not shown)

Year-long campuswide masonry projects were completed. All walkways and stairs, the cobblestone parking area, and Library patio had to have new drainage systems and sealers applied throughout. The Library patio was also installed with hidden anchors to accommodate the frequent use of tent rentals.
