Please join us in supporting the National Sporting Library & Museum’s 8th Annual Polo Classic, to be held on Sunday, September 9, 2018 at Great Meadow in The Plains, Virginia. The 2018 Classic is the perfect opportunity to experience NSLM’s Mission in Motion. Attendees in all areas of the event will experience two dynamic, high-goal polo matches with internationally recognized players; parades featuring the Caisson Platoon of the Old Guard, St. Andrew’s Society of DC Pipe Band, and Orange County Hounds; a champagne divot stomp; and our snazzy hat and dapper dresser contests! All of this takes place in celebration and support of the NSLM’s mission to preserve, promote, and share the literature, art, and culture of equestrian, angling, and field sports. Proceeds from this event fund NSLM’s educational programs and exhibitions throughout the year. In addition to being a premier location for viewing the exciting events on the field, guests in the Founders’ Pavilion will enjoy a seated luncheon, which is a great opportunity to entertain friends and business associates while making new connections. Plans are underway for pre-Classic events which offer additional opportunities for camaraderie and hospitality. Whether you are a returning sponsor or considering supporting this event for the first time, we invite you to join us at the 2018 Polo Classic in celebration of the NSLM’s Mission in Motion! Sincerely, 2018 Polo Classic Chair & Committee

NSLM is the opening venue for this traveling exhibition organized by Virginia Museum of Fine Arts. With over 80 paintings depicting animals, racing, coaching, foxhunting, gunning, and country life by artists such as George Stubbs, Sir Francis Grant, John Frederick Herring, Sr., Benjamin
Marshall, and George Morland, it is a natural fit to bring sportsman and philanthropist Paul Mellon’s sporting art collection back to the region where he collected it. The works strongly reflect NSLM’s mission and will be a wonderful opportunity for visitors to see numerous masterworks in the genre.

Contemporary sporting artist Andre Pater has gained international recognition for his masterful and vibrant oil and pastel paintings that bring sporting art to the 21st century. One of his earlier works depicted on the front of this folder, Kinetic Contact, was on loan to Andre Pater: In a Sporting Light. The tour-de-force retrospective exhibition of his work was held at the National Sporting Library & Museum in 2017. Pater experimented with his technique in this polo composition, incorporating graphiclinear elements to emphasize movement, as seen in the frenetic energy of the ride-off. Hilary J. Boone, III, a 3-goal polo player and president and long-time director of the Lexington Polo Club in Kentucky, was the model for the figure in the foreground of the composition.
