THE NATIONAL THEATRE OF SCOTLAND AIMS FIRST AND FOREMOST TO BE A THEATRE FOR EVERYONE. IN 2018 WE ARE BUILDING ON THIS ETHOS WITH A RENEWED FOCUS ON SCOTLAND’S FUTURE GENERATIONS. Futureproof is a nationwide, international festival of radical new work created with young people and for everyone, supported by Scotland’s Year of Young People 2018. It has been incredible to work with Lucy Gaizely from 21Common as co-curator, in partnership with EventScotland, to bring together the most exciting theatre makers from all over the world who will work side by side with Scottish artists and communities of young people. Ten new productions from some of the biggest global names in theatremaking and a host of our best Scottish talent will take place in ten locations all across the country in September and October. We have designed this project alongside our fabulous new Year of Young People Project Team who have spent the year with us, embedded at the heart of the company, helping shape this new era for the National Theatre of Scotland. Wherever you are in Scotland, from Shetland to Edinburgh, from Moray to Paisley, I hope you enjoy the festival of groundbreaking performance happening on your doorstep this Autumn. The National Theatre of Scotland is throwing open the doors of Rockvilla for a party like no other in celebration of the young people of Scotland. Marking Scotland’s Year of Young People 2018 and kicking off the Futureproof festival, the event will feature a line-up of young performers specially curated by the Year of Young People Project Team, a group of 14-26 year olds recruited by National Theatre of Scotland to oversee and influence the festival. The Year of Young People Project Team invite you to step into the future for a night of diverse performances, creative challenges and a glimpse of what the festival will hold. You don’t have to be a young person to attend but if you are not aged between 14-26 you will have to bring a young person with you to gain entry. * Tickets by invitation only. If you are aged between 14-26 and would like to receive an invitation to this event, sign up to our Futureproof Passport. See page 14 for details.

Documentary theatre specialists Rimini Protokoll (Germany) have adapted their acclaimed Cargo project for a very unusual tour around Paisley. You are taken on a journey in a remodelled truck, a mobile auditorium, looking out at the city through a large window. Next to the driver sits a child, who invites the audience to examine the city and the people in it: laws, rules, norms, rituals, explicit and implicit arrangements, visible and invisible codes – the do’s and don’ts. A soundscape created by a local choir supports and comments on the journey. Mammalian Diving Reflex (Canada) and the young people of Shetland have been studying Canadian sociologist Erving Goffman who came to Unst in 1948 and said he was there to study the local economy but, instead, observed everyone there. Seventy years after his best-selling research, a cast of Shetland youth apply Goffman’s insights at Unstfest, the UK’s most northerly festival. The result - The World is a Wedding, The Presentation of Unst in Everyday Life - presents their findings, with a song or two.
