TEN INSPIRING DIRECTORS, TEN SURPRISING LOCATIONS, TEN BRAND NEW PIECES OF THEATRE CREATED ACROSS THE COUNTRY TO CELEBRATE THE BEGINNING OF THE NATIONAL THEATRE OF SCOTLAND. NATIONAL THEATRE OF SCOTLAND OPENING NIGHT SATURDAY 25TH FEBRUARY, FREE in- Aberdeen, Caithness, Dumfries, Dundee, East Lothian, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Inverness, Shetland and Stornoway. by – Graham Eatough, Scott Graham, Stewart Laing, Matthew Lenton, Kenny Miller, Anthony Neilson, Alison Peebles, Gill Roberston, John Tiffany and Wils Wilson
the place where one lives, a dwelling house, one’s family background, the native land of a person or a person’s ancestors, an institution for persons needing care, rest or refuge, the place where a thing originates or is native or is most common, the finishing point in a race. The National Theatre of Scotland has commissioned ten of Britain’s best theatre directors to create ten pieces of theatre around the theme of HOME, widely thought of as the most evocative word in the English language. Each director will present their own unique vision of home, working together with artists and local communities and drawing inspiration from their surroundings. Together they will turn the whole of Scotland into their theatre. Over one night. In what we believe will be a truly unique event, we invite you to join us in forests, ferries, shopfronts, factories, museums, concert halls, nissan huts, tenements and tower blocks. NTS opening night will be unforgettable. It will be for children, young people, and not so young people. It will be free. It will be a celebration of theatre and a celebration for Scotland. HOME is a free event with capacity dependent on the nature of each event. See www.nationaltheatrescotland.com for details of all shows.

NTS CREATES A MAGICAL EXPERIENCE FOR EVERYONE OVER 7 WHO’S NOT A SCAREDY CAT

‘A STORY FOR COOL KIDS WHO WILL GROW UP FEARLESS.’ THE SUNDAY TIMES
Presented by NTS and Improbable in association with Tramway Conceived and made for the stage by Julian Crouch, Vicky Featherstone and Nick Powell Additional lyrics by Neil Gaiman Choreography by Steven Hoggett
This is the story of Lucy, who hears creeping, creaking, crumpling noises coming from behind the wallpaper and is convinced that there are wolves in the walls of her house. Her jam-making mother, tuba-playing father and video game obsessed brother think the noises are really mice, or rats or bats. But they are wrong and she is right as they will all soon find out…
Improbable has made ten pieces of work to date; 70 Hill Lane, Animo, Lifegame, Cinderella, Coma, Spirit, Sticky, The Hanging Man, Theatre Of Blood and Stars Are Out Tonight. These shows have toured to eighteen countries around the world. www.improbable.co.uk
‘IMPROBABLE... IS ONE OF THE MOST ENERGISING AND PROVOCATIVE FORCES IN BRITISH THEATRE.’ THE GUARDIAN
With an unruly pack of actors, musicians and crazy puppets, the show will make you laugh, shriek with horror and watch the action between the cracks in your fingers, because everyone knows… when the wolves come out of the walls, it’s all over. The National Theatre of Scotland and Improbable are unleashing The Wolves in the Walls onto the stage. NTS Artistic Director, Vicky Featherstone, co-directs in partnership with Improbable’s Julian Crouch, whose work includes the unforgettable Shockheaded Peter and Jerry Springer the Opera. Nick Powell, best known for his haunting television scores and soundtracks for Suspect Culture provides the music and songs. Neil Gaiman and Dave McKean have conquered the world with the Sandman series, Coraline and most recently MirrorMask, a stunning new feature film. Bookshops across the world are crammed with their work and Gaiman is a regular New York Times number one bestseller. Having expressed their unique vision through graphic and adult novels, children’s books, television and film, this is the first time the duo’s work gatecrashes theatre. For everyone over 7 who isn’t a scaredy cat.

‘ONE OF THE BEST WOMEN’S ROLES EVER TO EMERGE FROM SCOTTISH THEATRE.’ JOYCE MACMILLAN in THE GUARDIAN (1985)
While others worry about the trivial things in life, like food, a roof over their heads, rent strikes and world wars, Elizabeth Gordon Quinn has but one concern – her piano. She can’t play a note but it sets her apart from her impoverished neighbours. Or so she thinks… Written in 1985, Elizabeth Gordon Quinn is a contemporary classic, featuring one of the best women’s roles ever to emerge from Scottish theatre. Holding court amidst her dysfunctional family and its filth, Elizabeth Gordon Quinn is an unforgettable tragicomic heroine with an extraordinary power to repel and attract. John Tiffany (Perfect Days, Passing Places, Gagarin Way) directs a crack Scottish cast led by Siobhan Redmond in a production that promises to be epic and electrifying. ‘Chris Hannan has created one of the most intriguing characters of the modern stage.’ MARK FISHER in THE LIST (1985) Chris Hannan is one of Scotland’s most inspiring and influential writers. His work has been staged by the Royal Shakespeare Company, the Traverse Theatre, the Tron Theatre, the Old Vic and the Bush and includes the plays Shining Souls and The Evil Doers.

WORKSHOP
The NTS Workshop is the innovative heart of the National Theatre of Scotland and exists to invigorate our notion of theatre. First port of call for any artist or company wanting to develop ideas with or through the company, it helps projects realise their full potential by encouraging risk-taking and demanding excellence. It provides opportunities and stimulus for artists across the whole artform and encourages collaboration.
In addition to development, NTS Workshop will also produce occasional experimental projects. The first of these is Falling, a co-production with Poorboy in association with the Arches.
Our teams of artists and theatre makers are now working across Scotland. We aim to inspire and empower so that anyone who wants to, can help make exciting and vibrant theatre to be shared with audiences across the country. This way we can help create a confident, outward-looking and distinctively Scottish theatre voice.

Events and productions will be happening throughout Scotland from May onwards and culminate in a festival at the Theatre and Concert Hall at Horsecross, Perth in July.
NTS Exchange is a creative partnership with the Playwrights’ Studio Scotland. Working with youth theatre groups from Ayr, Dundee, Lochaber, Inverness, Kilmarnock, Perth, Cumbernauld, Fife, Edinburgh and Skye.
Get them to create a theatre festival and then brace yourself. It’s risky and irreverent.
Take over two hundred 16 to 25 year olds and ask them to explore what it is to be young, Scottish and international. Give them a team of mentors who are renowned for creating some of the most exciting theatre in Scotland.

Eight international directors partnered with eight Scotland-based directors will produce four platform performances and four studio theatre explorations of international work. The abundant talents of students who are about to graduate from the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama will be on display as cast and co-explorers at one of Scotland’s most celebrated and innovative theatre venues – The Tron Theatre in Glasgow.
In the face of all this what stories must we tell?
It’s estimated that in ten years time 90% of the world population will live in urban conurbations. War, famine, a shrinking global economy and easy air travel have created an immeasurable community of people in transit. They are part of our daily life, they are a country’s greatest asset and its greatest threat. Our world is shrinking and with it our individual identity and heritage are being challenged. Scotland, Sweden, Egypt, Canada, Romania, Greece, India, Philippines and Russia will all share their stories and methods of creating the most urgent and contemporary theatre possible.
If this mix of talent and entertainment isn’t enough then join us in debate hosted by Glasgow University Theatre Department. The University will chair open workshops on a range of subjects inspired by the performances and workshops.

‘ TAG HAVE FOUND A WAY TO TELL THEIR STORIES FOR YOUNG PEOPLE WITH A CLARITY, IMAGINATION, AND TOTAL LACK OF CONDESCENSION THAT SETS THE MIND RACING.’ THE HERALD
A co-production with NTS LEARN and TAG Theatre Company Directed by Guy Hollands By permission of the Royal Shakespeare Company
“Written by Arthur Miller, one of the greatest American playwrights of the twentieth century”, The Crucible is an intense and timeless work inspired by the 1692 witch trials in Salem, Massachusetts. This co-production provides a rare chance to see Miller’s masterpiece. A riveting drama of individual conscience set against a community consumed by hysteria, The Crucible puts truth on trial as the actions of a group of young girls fuel a lethal climate of fear and intolerance. This unique large-scale production will feature a cast of professional actors, working alongside school and community actors. The Crucible will tour to Livingston, Cumbernauld, Findhorn, St Andrews and Irvine. The ninestrong company will work with a different group of school and community performers in each of its five touring destinations. These performances are the culmination of a pioneering six-month schools and community collaboration with the National Theatre of Scotland and TAG Theatre Company. The Crucible is part of the NTS Learn programme.

Roam is Grid Iron‘s tenth anniversary production and their most ambitious to date. Set in and around the lounges and gates of Edinburgh International Airport, the production explores the phenomenon of mass global air travel. Are modern air passengers the contemporary equivalent of angels, bearing messages across the globe, or nomadic wanderers for whom home is no longer bound by national boundaries?
ROAM
Inspired by a diversity of texts from Michel Serres, Pico Iyer, Alain de Botton and many others, as well as testimonies from refugees and airport workers, Grid Iron‘s production combines a multinational company of ten performers together with a large group of non-professional participants aged five to eighty-five. Roam begins as the last flight leaves, that liminal time when airports become something other, a twilight world of memories, travellers‚ detritus, ghosts and echoes of tearful and joyous conversations. Roam reflects on national identity, the gross inequalities in our world, the politics of terror and on flight itself as a symbol of human achievement. ‘Few seconds in life are more releasing than those in which a plane ascends to the sky... accompanied by the controlled rage of the engines we rise fluently into the atmosphere and an immense horizon opens up across which we can wander without impediment. A journey which on earth would have taken us an afternoon can be accomplished with an infinitesimal movement of the eye...’ ALAIN DE BOTTON, THE ART OF TRAVEL Roam: an imaginative journey through, in and around the possibilities of air travel.

Scottish theatre has always been for the people, led by great performances, great stories or great playwrights. We now have the chance to build a new generation of theatre-goers as well as reinvigorating the existing ones; to create theatre on a national and international scale that is contemporary, confident and forward-looking; to bring together brilliant artists, composers, choreographers and playwrights; and to exceed our expectation of what and where theatre can be. The National Theatre of Scotland has no building; there has been no great capital project involving architects and contractors. Instead, we are taking theatre all over Scotland, working with the existing venues, touring and creating work within the theatre community. We have no bricks-andmortar institutionalism to counter, nor the security of a permanent home in which to develop. All our money and energy can be spent on creating the work. Our theatre will take place in the great buildings - Edinburgh’s Royal Lyceum and Glasgow’s Citizens – but also in site-specific locations, community halls and sports halls, car parks and forests.
OUR MANIFESTO For over 100 years, the theatre community in Scotland has been campaigning for a National Theatre. Now it is finally happening. In September 2003 the Scottish parliament announced the creation of the only new major cultural institution since devolution.
As well as producing our own work, we will collaborate with the best companies and individuals working here already. We will travel all over Scotland taking work to schools and communities. A small ensemble of six actors will take up residence for a week at a time in the smallest venues and communities in Scotland, offering plays for adults, young adults and family theatre. At last we will be able to create large-scale work, music and spectacle, something that has disappeared due to lack of resources and time. There will be opportunities for our great playwrights to write big, important plays and to do new versions of those which have not been seen in Scotland for many years. This will create parts for the great Scottish actors spread over the world and at home. We will tour internationally and bring international work into Scotland. We have created a young company of recently graduated actors, directors, producers and technicians who will tour their own work, giving them the opportunity to develop professionally. We have spent many hours debating the notion of a “national theatre” and the responsibility that entails. It is not, and should not be, a jingoistic, patriotic stab at defining a nation’s identity through theatre. In fact, it should not be an opportunity to try to define anything. Instead, it is the chance to throw open the doors of possibility, to encourage boldness. I hope our programme goes some way to realising these ambitions. I hope we will make Scotland proud.
Vicky Featherstone Artistic Director
IN SUMMARY The National Theatre of Scotland has no building but instead will tour work to venues large and small all around Scotland, from Shetland in the north to Dumfries and Galloway in the south
