Welcome to the NTS spring 2007 brochure.
“Its work has proved a triumph” The Independent

I hope it will inspire you to come to see the work of NTS, our partners and co-producers. Once again our commitment to take the best quality work to the widest possible audience is at the fore of everything we do. We want you to have nights or days in the theatre that will thrill you and excite you, moments of transformation that leave you breathless and ideas that challenge the way you think. These are indeed ambitious ideals, but so is the notion of a National Theatre of Scotland, an inspirational, world-leading, non-building based company, serving audiences all over Scotland and beyond. Any success we have is about how we are able to make you feel, whether it is the mixture of pride and futility that Black Watch
leaves you with, or the joy of the Majestics singing Tutti Frutti together. To that end the most important part of the NTS is you, the audience. Without you none of these moments would have existed. I am looking forward to many more of these with this great new season, which is a mixture of new and challenging work and some old favourites back by loud and popular demand. I hope you will enjoy it.

THE WONDERFUL WORLD OF DISSOCIA
Lisa Jones is on a journey. It’s a colourful and exciting off-kilter trip in search of one lost hour that has tipped the balance of her life. The inhabitants of the wonderful world she finds herself in – Dissocia – are a curious blend of the funny, the friendly and the brutal. As Neilson himself puts it, “If you like Alice in Wonderland but there’s not enough sex and violence in it, then Dissocia is the show for you”.
LEARN MORE ABOUT DISSOCIA ONLINE: • Mini documentary about the original production featuring an interview with Anthony Neilson and clips from the show • Features on Realism, Anthony Neilson’s sister piece to Dissocia, produced by NTS and the Edinburgh International Festival in 2006 www.nationaltheatrescotland.com
Produced originally for the 2004 Edinburgh International Festival, The Wonderful World of Dissocia wowed critics and audiences alike, cleaning up at the Critics’ Awards for Theatre in Scotland.

Following a sell-out run at the Edinburgh Festival in summer 2006, unanimous critical acclaim and a stunning audience response, the award-winning Black Watch is on tour. Hurtling from a pool room in Fife to an armoured wagon in Iraq, Black Watch is based on recent interviews conducted by Gregory Burke with former soldiers who served in Iraq. Viewed through the eyes of those on the ground, Black Watch reveals what it means to be part of the legendary Scottish regiment, what it means to be part of the war on terror and what it means to make the journey home again. John Tiffany’s production makes powerful and inventive use of movement, music and song to create a visceral, complex and urgent piece of theatre. Black Watch has won a Herald Angel, a Scotsman Fringe First, a Best Theatre Writing Award from The List and a Stage Award for Best Ensemble.

UK PREMIERE A young couple check into a hotel with their two small children. A week passes before the police make a chilling discovery. In 1999, in the suburban town of Aalst, two parents murdered their children. The ensuing high profile and dramatic trial led to much soul-searching in the Belgian media. In 2005 Belgian theatre company, Victoria, dramatised the case, working from source material including statements and interviews, TV footage of the trial and a documentary on the murder investigation. Produced in theatres and festivals across Europe, Aalst has built a reputation as a powerful and complex piece of modern theatre which raises disturbing questions – questions that have no easy answer. Aalst is a production based on real events, born in Europe, re-worked, reshaped and re-imagined for a Scottish audience by a brilliant and eclectic creative team. Adapted by highly acclaimed novelist Duncan McLean and directed by original creator Pol Heyvaert from the internationally renowned company Victoria, Aalst sees a welcome return to the stage for the multiaward winning Kate Dickie (Red Road), David McKay (My Name is Joe) and features the voice of Gary Lewis (Billy Elliot).
“The display of the reality behind murder and the criminal mind are beautifully exposed in Aalst” RTE

FUTUROLOGY
WORLD PREMIERE The future will never be the same again. Futurology: A Global Revue is a black comedy that asks the only question anyone really cares about: Is everything going to be alright? The future’s coming towards us at a hundred miles an hour. Do you ever feel like a rabbit caught in the headlights? The oil’s running out, the climate is changing, China’s on the rise. But in the future we’ll have cars that run on water, smart fridges that know what food you like, Google implanted in your head so you never need to actually search for anything ever again. Meanwhile we’re left wondering how to act now. Is there something we should be doing? Is it OK to be doing nothing? Thankfully, the powers that be have called a conference to discuss all this and make the big decisions for us. Futurology is the story of that conference. Delegates, economists, politicians, protestors and mystics turn up from all over the world. PowerPoint presentations are made. Weighty decisions hang in the balance. Meanwhile the Mayor of the town hosting the conference is determined that everyone is going to sample the best of the local entertainment… Everybody seems to know what they’re doing except the delegate from the Sandwich Islands. Her home is sinking and she just wants to know what to do for the best. Follow Patrice, as she struggles to negotiate high politics, conference sex and the finer points of name badge etiquette before – eventually – learning how to play the game. But will it be enough to save her homeland? Futurology explores the big questions with a darkly comic show packed full of song, dance and ventriloquism. As part of their expanding Strange Behaviour programme Suspect Culture, in association with NTS Learn, are offering a host of engaging interpretive activities alongside the show, ranging from an interactive blog to debate the future, to workshops and articles by the creative team.

TUTTI FRUTTI
TUTTI FRUTTI BY JOHN BYRNE
“A genuine must-see theatrical event”
NATIONAL THEATRE OF SCOTLAND FEB – JUN 2007
Twenty three years on from their slightly dodgy, single foray into the charts, Scottish pop sensations, The Majestics, are mourning the loss of Big Jazza - their charismatic front-man - whose Ford Sierra just collided with a bus shelter via an unwelcome late night kebab. With a Silver Jubilee tour booked, an album to cut and a TV documentary in the offing, can Jazza’s wee brother Danny, just washed up from New York with only four dollars to his name, save the day? In 1987 John Byrne’s award-winning comedy-drama, Tutti Frutti, burst onto the nation’s TV screens, searing itself into a generation’s consciousness in the process. For the stage John Byrne has created a hugely popular live version of his legendary TV show and it returns following a sell out run in 2006. With a classic Scottish cast including stars from Monarch of the Glen, Balamory, River City and Chewin’ the Fat, Tutti Frutti is hilarious, touching and visually spectacular. Packed with 60’s hits including Dream, Dream, Dream; Love Hurts; and You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feeling, Tutti Frutti will have audiences young and old rockin’ in the aisles. Tutti Frutti was originally co-produced with His Majesty’s Theatre, Aberdeen.

WORLD PREMIERE In a room in Soho, a dying man is turning gold. He has a gift. With just one touch or kiss, he can reveal a glimpse of heaven in all its resplendent glory. Some call him Cupid. Or Venus as a Boy. Journeying from his turbulent childhood in Orkney, haunted by the girl he betrayed and the lover he never escaped – and travelling south through the Highlands and Edinburgh, he finds himself in the seedy underbelly of Soho, where pimps and hormones and a transsexual called Wendy finally break him. “True love was never going to be my reward… My reward is the understanding that, for those I’ve touched, knowledge of me is knowledge of the divine.” Adapted from Luke Sutherland’s acclaimed novel, and performed by awardwinning actor Tam Dean Burn, Venus as a Boy is an explosive and haunting story about the miraculous power of sex. Venus as a Boy will follow the journey of the novel; opening at the St Magnus Festival in Orkney, stopping off in Ullapool and later in the year reaching Edinburgh and London.

NTS WORKSHOP
NATIONAL THEATRE OF SCOTLAND FEB – JUN 2007
NTS YOUNG COMPANY
NTS YOUNG COMPANY & YOUTH ASSOCIATES WORKSHOP NTS Workshop is the innovative heart of the National Theatre of Scotland and exists to invigorate and challenge our notion of theatre. NTS Workshop is the first port of call for any professional theatre-maker who has a brilliant idea they’d like to investigate. Uniquely, it also gives theatremakers who are not conventionally the leaders of a creative process the opportunity to drive their own projects. Working with both companies and individual artists, NTS Workshop can offer development support to a project at an embryonic stage on its journey towards potential production. Each year, we will select a small number of these experimental projects for an NTS Workshop Production – a small-scale, fully realized theatrical event. The next NTS Workshop Production is Venus as a Boy, a stage adaptation of Luke Sutherland’s acclaimed Scottish novel, devised by actor Tam Dean Burn in a co-production with his company Burnt Goods. In its first year, NTS Workshop has:
• Supported the artistic development of 22 new projects; • Co-produced Falling with Angus-based theatre company Poorboy • • FOR MORE INFORMATION ON HOW TO SUBMIT A PROPOSAL TO NTS, VISIT www.nationaltheatrescotland.com
• •
(in association with the Arches); Provided professional development for 6 emergent directors (Arches Award for Stage Directors & Directors Summer School); Hosted an Open Space Conference for theatre practitioners and an artists residency in Aberdeen; Resourced FUSE, a national script search programme for unsolicited new plays; Worked with over 450 theatre-makers.
NTS YOUTH ASSOCIATES NTS YOUNG COMPANY IN COLLABORATION WITH MARK MURPHY
THE RECOVERY POSITION DIRECTOR: MARK MURPHY DESIGNER: BECKY MINTO LIGHTING DESIGNER: LIZZIE POWELL SOUND DESIGNER: NATHANIEL REED
A site-specific promenading production created especially for The Bridge in Easterhouse, The Recovery Position throws us headlong into a high-speed world of pain, panic, and paramedics – exploring why the ‘operating theatre’ isn’t called theatre by accident. Mark Murphy was founder and director of Vtol Dance Company; Co-director of A Clockwork Orange and 1984 for The Northern Stage Ensemble in Newcastle, award winning director for the Melbourne Commonwealth Games and is the Associate Director of outdoor performance company Walk The Plank.
NTS is committed to involving young people in the development of its work, hence the creation of our Youth Associate posts. Helping shape the company’s programme and vision, Robin James from Forres, Megan McGarrigle from Glasgow and Anthony Okill from Shetland, have spent the last year documenting, reviewing and advising on the shape and vision of the company from a young person’s perspective and now we are looking for three dynamic, enthusiastic and passionate young people aged 16-19 to become our Youth Associates in 2007. To apply you will need to write a 250 word personal statement explaining what theatre means to you, as well as a 500 word review of a recent theatre performance you have seen. You will also need to supply the name and contact details of a referee, who should not be related to you and who will support your application.
With extensive experience working across art forms, Mark’s collaboration with the Young Company will create an ambitious, thrilling, and unforgettable piece of theatre.
Closing date for applications is Friday 20th April 2007 with successful candidates able to take up the post in June 2007. For further information and a job description, please visit our web site or email karen.graham@nationaltheatrescotland.com

A team of artists are working with Arran High, Lamlash and Brodick primary schools and the community of Arran, to create a large-scale, multimedia theatre event. By celebrating Arran’s local history, Footprint! aims to transform the future. Crossing the generation gap and connecting the mainland and island communities, Footprint! promises to be a memorable moment in Arran’s rich cultural history.
For Transform 2006 Visible Fictions produced the spectacular theatrical event, Flight. By living and working in Dalmellington, Visible Fictions and Flight helped transform this former mining community in Doon Valley. Now in 2007 working with schools and community groups in South Lanarkshire, Visible Fictions will use their unique brand of theatremaking to produce a large-scale event that will form part of a busy cultural programme throughout South Lanarkshire.

NTS LEARN
Following the great success of last year’s inaugural Exchange project, NTS Learn, in partnership with macrobert, have brought together young companies to explore, through a theme of metamorphosis, what it means to be young, Scottish and international. Participants include:

From January all of the above will be working with NTS creative partners and their own youth theatre directors to devise and create new pieces of theatre. Each Exchange group will have a home performance at a local venue between May-June 2007 before taking their performances to the Exchange Youth Theatre Festival at macrobert in Stirling.

COMING SOON In September 2007, the National Theatre of Scotland will be working in collaboration with NVA, one of the UK’s foremost environmental arts organisations which has built a strong reputation for cutting edge landscape work, often set in geographically remote locations. As a key part of Argyll’s participation in Highland 2007, this project is a remarkable day and night-time performance that will spread over 150 sq. miles and celebrate the stunningly rich prehistory of mid Argyll. Throughout September, audiences are invited to freely explore a range of iconic locations and attend a major night time outdoor production on a monumental forest set, constructed out of thousands of cut logs.
