NATIONAL THEATRE OF SCOTLAND SUMMER – AUTUMN 2006
INTRODUCTION
“If this is the future of theatre, we’re in for colourful times” The Guardian
Welcome to the National Theatre of Scotland’s second brochure-the half way point in our inaugural season. On February 25th we launched the first ‘night’ of the National Theatre with a landmark event –HOME-taking place simultaneously in 10 very different locations all over Scotland. HOME won several awards and audiences and participants from Scotland were proud to be part of this significant historical event. Since then we have played classic world drama, great Scottish plays, music theatre and site specific work to audiences in theatres, in airports, in garages and on the street. We’ve performed to adults, children and young people and inspired and excited thousands and thousands of people with the chance to see great theatre. And this really is just the beginning; we have much, much more to look forward to. We are delighted to have begun our relationship with The Platform at Easterhouse and hope you will come and visit us in the beautiful new building.
Our two Edinburgh shows, Black Watch in the Edinburgh Festival Fringe and Realism at the Edinburgh International Festival round off the summer. In autumn we are presenting a great new version of Schiller’s Mary Stuart by David Harrower with the Citizens Theatre and the Royal Lyceum Theatre. The mighty Tutti Frutti by John Byrne makes its exciting stage incarnation and our Ensemble sets out with three shows to communities across Scotland. The National Theatre of Scotland is a unique opportunity to create living theatre that matters to a 21st century audience. We want to make the most of it. Please visit our website – our virtual home tells you about us in more detail and also about the people we are working with. We hope you are looking forward to the future as much as we are. I look forward to seeing you at one or hopefully more of our events. THANK YOU

BLACK WATCH
05
AN UNAUTHORISED BIOGRAPHY OF THE LEGENDARY SCOTTISH REGIMENT. Celebrated for its bravery and clan loyalties, the Black Watch has been in the vanguard of countless British military expeditions from Waterloo and the Somme to Kosovo. Its last great challenge before enforced amalgamation was relieving American forces at Camp Dogwood in Iraq during 2004. Honest, funny and tragic, this is a timely and vital theatrical investigation based on interviews with former soldiers of the Black Watch who served in Iraq:
“It’s a buzz, you’re in a war ay, and you’re doing the job you’re trained for, but it’s no like they’re a massive threat tay you or tay your country. You’re no defending your country. We’re invading their country and fucking their day up.” Performed in a disused drill hall, with a cast of ten dynamic young actors, Black Watch is a highly physical piece of political theatre. GREGORY BURKE’S DEBUT, GAGARIN WAY (TRAVERSE, WEST END AND WORLD TOUR), WAS FOLLOWED BY THE STRAITS (PAINES PLOUGH), AND ON TOUR (ROYAL COURT AND LIVERPOOL EVERYMAN). THIS IS HIS THIRD COLLABORATION WITH JOHN TIFFANY, ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR (NEW WORK) AT NTS.

Twenty three years on from their slightly dodgy, single foray into the charts, Scottish pop sensations, The Majestics, are mourning the loss of Big Jazza, their charismatic front-man, whose Ford Sierra just collided with a bus shelter via an unwelcome late night kebab. With a Silver Jubilee Tour booked, an album to cut and a TV documentary in the offing, will Jazza’s brother, Danny, just washed up from New York with only four dollars to his name, save the day? The year was 1987 and John Byrne’s award-winning comedy-drama burst onto the nation’s TV screens, searing itself into a generation’s consciousness in the process. Now the National Theatre of Scotland and His Majesty’s Theatre, Aberdeen bring Vinnie, Eddie Clockerty, Miss Toner, Suzi Kettles, Bomba, et al to the stage for the very first time. John Byrne adapts his own original script in what promises to be the theatrical and musical event of the year, with a classic Scottish cast including stars from Monarch of the Glen, Balamory, River City and Chewin the Fat. Hilarious, touching, visually spectacular and jam-packed with 60’s hits, Tutti Frutti will have audiences young and old rockin’ in the aisles. “Corking comedy-drama featuring dazzling dialogue. A Joy” BBC Comedy Guide “A bewitching cocktail of romance, comedy, tragedy and music “ Screenonline/BFI

MARY STUART
One of European theatre’s major plays, Schiller’s masterpiece hinges on a brilliantly imagined meeting between Mary Queen of Scots, focus of simmering Catholic dissent, and her cousin, Elizabeth, Queen of England, who has imprisoned her. Isolated by their duplicitous male courtiers, the women collide headlong, each wrestling with the rank, ambition and destiny their births have bestowed against a thrilling background of intrigue, plot and counter-plot. Mary Stuart has probably done more than any other work to shape perceptions across continental Europe of Scotland and its history. One of Scotland’s leading contemporary playwrights, David Harrower (Blackbird, Knives in Hens) now tackles Mary Stuart in a major production directed by Vicky Featherstone. “A riveting study in sexual obsession that leaves one both shaken and stirred” The Guardian on David Harrower’s Blackbird “Schiller is suddenly sexy.” The Guardian “It has taken British audiences a long time to recognise the genius of the German dramatist… Schiller is suddenly and deservedly in vogue“ The Telegraph

Gobbo is a goblin who doesn’t like adventures. What Gobbo likes best is sitting in front of his fire eating rhubarb and drinking dandelion ale and farting. If Gobbo had to make a list of the top ten things he didn’t like it would probably begin with: 10.Going down river rapids in a leaky canoe, 9. Being captured by eagles, 8. Falling down thousand foot cliffs. Which is a shame for Gobbo because those are just some of the things that happen to him in The Adventure of Gobbo and The Watchmaker. The trouble is that Gobbo’s best friends – the brave and cheerful Globachan ‘We’ll be fine‘ and Globachan’s clever and plucky daughter, Pixie Pumpkin ‘How did you know I had a time shield?’- just can’t resist an adventure and so Gobbo is forever finding himself embroiled in a dangerous scrapes. This time, they must meet the scariest baddie yet – the Watchmaker and his mechanical army. A show with live music, lots of dancing, some funny bits and a raffle with good prizes, Gobbo is a production for the whole family. Well, there are some exciting bits – like the attack of the giant robot baby – you might get scared. And there is the farting, you might be offended. And it’s really not very educational. Maybe you’d better not come. Suitable for children aged five and over. THE MULTI-AWARD-WINNING DAVID GREIG IS ONE OF THE UK’S LEADING PLAYWRIGHTS. HIS WORK INCLUDES PYRENEES (PAINES PLOUGH/TRON), 8000M (SUSPECT CULTURE), SAN DIEGO (TRON/EIF) AND OUTLYING ISLANDS (TRAVERSE). HE CURRENTLY HOLDS THE POST OF DRAMATURG WITH NTS. PLAYWRIGHT AND DIRECTOR, WILS WILSON IS ONE HALF OF THE DUO, WILSON+ WILSON. SHE DIRECTED HOME:SHETLAND, PART OF NTS’S LAUNCH PROJECT.

I look up. The moon is looking at us. A great white eye. I can feel the pressure in its light. Actually I feel like barking. But I don’t. Paul is trying to grow up. Trying to get his dad off his back and his mum out of his face. Trying to work out what girls are all about. Trying to catch up on the work he hasn’t done. Trying to stay out of trouble. But strange things keep happening. And they are getting stranger. Reality seems to be shifting. People are looking at him in a different way. Does Paul really turn into animals, or does he only think he does?

WRITTEN BY ZINNIE HARRIS A NEW VERSION OF AUGUST STRINBERG’S MISS JULIE FROM A LITERAL TRANSLATION BY HANNA SLATTNE DIRECTED BY ZINNIE HARRIS DESIGNED BY LIZZIE CLACHAN LIGHTING DESIGNED BY KAI FISCHER MUSIC COMPOSED BY JOHN HARRIS
In the oppressive heat of Midsummer’s Eve, Julie, daughter of the Lord, is drawn into a dangerous tryst with her father’s butler, John. As the night wears on, the couple, from opposite ends of the social spectrum, dance, flirt and fight towards an explosive conclusion that will shake the existing order to its core.

SUITABLE FOR FOURTEEN YEARS PLUS. CONTAINS STRONG LANGUAGE. ZINNIE HARRIS WRITES AND DIRECTS FOR THEATRE AND TELEVISION. HER PLAYS INCLUDE FURTHER THAN THE FURTHEST THING (TRON THEATRE/NATIONAL THEATRE), AND THE ACCLAIMED MIDWINTER AND SOLSTICE FOR THE ROYAL SHAKESPEARE COMPANY. ZINNIE ALSO WRITES FOR SPOOKS, ON BBC1.
Miss Julie is Swedish playwright, novelist and painter, August Strindberg’s masterpiece, written at the height of his powers as a dramatist in the late Nineteenth Century. Zinnie Harris’s new version heightens the social and sexual tension, relocating the play to central Scotland between the wars. A rare chance to see this touchstone of European theatre adapted and directed by an outstanding Scottish talent.

PROJECT MACBETH
Scotland’s King, hero or villain? Witness the real Macbeth at war with Shakespeare’s myth in a battle to redefine his 21st century identity. Re-imagined with teachers and pupils and a professional cast and crew. All the best bits from Shakespeare’s play, losing none of the original suspense or drama. A multimedia approach incorporating sound, video and visual art installation will create a fast paced and thrilling theatrical event. And if that isn’t exciting enough, in a groundbreaking initiative, teachers and pupils at three of the five venues are creating three Scottish contemporary texts inspired by Shakespeare’s Macbeth. Led by professional directors, each play takes place on the same stage and set but is designed and produced by local schools and artists.

We believe that theatre is a unique way of supporting and nurturing talent and creativity through the shared experience of learning something new. Young and old, amateur and professional, schools communities, colleges and universities as well as voluntary groups and enthusiastic individuals have joined us on a journey of discovery that has demanded innovative and challenging approaches to exploring our creativity and connection to each other. In our first year of operation we have been delighted and astonished at the range of talent and hunger for creative exchange across Scotland. Our future programme will shape and change along with the artists, pupils, teachers and communities we connect with. We hope that you will join us on a journey that will inspire, empower, innovate and most of all entertain in a genuine theatre of opportunity.

NTS YOUNG COMPANY
YOUNG COMPANY The National Theatre of Scotland Young Company is a director, two producers and four actors based in Platform at the Bridge, a new multi-purpose arts venue in Easterhouse. All theatre professionals at the start of their careers, the members of the company have been brought together for a year to produce an exciting and varied programme of work under the mentorship of the National Theatre of Scotland. The NTS Young Company has already worked with Platform Drama to present installation performances for the Easterhouse Festival in July and to celebrate the opening of The Bridge to the public. The NTS Young Company will also deliver drama workshops to various community groups throughout the year. Young Company’s programme includes:
NATIONAL THEATRE OF SCOTLAND SUMMER – AUTUMN 2006
SIDE EFFECTS BY RAMAN MUNDAIR A CO-PRODUCTION WITH A PLAY, A PIE AND A PINT, ORAN MOR
Hamish and Jim have a sure fire way of getting the ladies falling at their feet. Ailsa has a secret that keeps her up at night. Kathleen’s got to decide where her loyalties lie. All four meet in a raucous Glasgow pub on a Saturday night and their lives are changed forever. Side Effects is a whirlwind ride through the dark places where people hide, flushing bad dreams, hard truths and dirty linen into the light. Raman Mundair is a Scottish Arts Council Writing Fellow based in Glasgow. In 2005 she was awarded a mentorship with the Playwright’s Studio, Scotland and in 2006 was runner up in the Penguin Decibel prize for short fiction. An established poet, she is the author of Lovers, Liars, Conjurers and Thieves (Peepal Tree Press) and A Choreographer’s Cartography, to be published in Spring 2007.

SELF CONTAINED Let me show you a secret.
OEDIPUS THE KING
Come with us on a tour to a place where forgotten people live their lives, unaware that the world still exists above them.
Is it possible to change our destiny? Can we ever truly control our lives or are we just instruments of fate? Follow Oedipus’s journey to reverse the tragic prediction of his actions and their consequences. The stakes couldn’t be higher: to prevent the destruction of both himself and those he loves.
These are desperate times, and desperate times call for the unthinkable. At once sinister and unnervingly possible, Self Contained is an exploration of loneliness, powerstruggles, suspicion and the politics of small communities. It uses disjointed narrative, dark comedy, and dated technology to tell its tale. Don’t expect the milkman to deliver. Don’t expect your mum to tell you a story and never believe what you read in the newspapers.

Another chance to see NTS and Improbable’s acclaimed, funny and scary family show. It’s the story of Lucy, who hears creeping, creaking, crumpling noises coming from behind the wallpaper and is convinced that there are wolves in the walls of her house. Her jam-making mother, tuba-playing father and video game obsessed brother think the noises are really mice, or rats or bats. But they are wrong and she is right as they will all soon find out… because when the wolves come out of the walls, it’s all over. FOR EVERYONE OVER 7 WHO ISN’T A SCAREDY CAT

NTS WORKSHOP
NTS WORKSHOP The NTS Workshop is the innovative heart of the National Theatre of Scotland and exists to invigorate our notion of theatre. First port of call for any artist or company wanting to develop ideas with or through the company, it helps projects realise their full potential by encouraging risk-taking and demanding excellence. It provides opportunities and stimulus for artists across the whole artform and encourages collaboration. In addition to development, NTS Workshop will also produce occasional experimental projects.
