about how our identity and heritage have been shaped by conflict and compassion.

This year’s national theme ‘Conflict and Compassion’ recognises many important aspects of our history but this year focuses on stories of people in wartime, as we acknowledge the centenary of the ANZAC landings at Gallipoli.

In all, the Heritage Festival is about stories of people - ordinary people, doing extraordinary things.

We are again very pleased to be linking our Heritage Festival to the Australian Government’s Australian Heritage Week celebrations and thank the Australian Government for continuing to support the National Trust’s Heritage Festivals across the nation.

While many of this year’s events uncover fascinating aspects of our wartime history, there are many other stories to discover within this theme about our Indigenous heritage, hospitals and nurses and cemeteries, just to

I thank all the participants, many of whom are volunteers, for hosting an activity in this year’s Festival. It is inspiring to see so many events in regional Queensland this year. We encourage all Queenslanders to get involved in our Heritage Festival by taking part in some of these many special activities and learning more

Presented by Bribie Island Seaside Museum

Join us as we commemorate the centenary of the First World War through the screening of three mini-documentaries exploring the stories of Black Diggers and recollections of life ‘on the homefront’ as told by their descendants. This project is proudly supported by the Queensland Government.

To commemorate the 100th Anniversary of the Gallipoli campaign, the Museum presents an exhibition highlighting the role of the Australian War Memorial in remembering those Australian soldiers who have made the ultimate sacrifice. The exhibition will highlight the different exhibitions and special commemorative areas contained within the AWM, as well as display artefacts on loan from the Queensland Military Memorial Museum – Victoria Barracks.

Who Answered the Call? is a Bribie Island Historical Society project supported by a Queensland Anzac Centenary grant. It has identified 18 enlistees who lived or were born on Bribie Island or locations along the Pumicestone Passage. Of these enlistees three died, one was a German POW and another landed on Gallipoli 25 April 1915. These enlistees will be remembered on a bronze plaque to be unveiled this year. Traditionally, examples of embroidered and crocheted pieces could be found in most Australian homes. Along with their practical function, they often served a decorative purpose, making even the most humble home a more comfortable place to live in. Embroidery and crochet work was often used to commemorate significant events. This exhibition will showcase many fine examples of the ‘Gentle Arts’ held in our Museum collection. See our website.

Before WWI, life in our Redlands was very different from life here today. Local historian Peter Ludlow will recall life as it was then, and how it changed as the result of the war. Like all other communities in Australia, our young men flocked to enlist in the AIF and to experience their ‘great adventure’. How soon it was to change for them in the hell of Gallipoli and the Western Front. Bookings are required.

During WWI over eight million animals died as a result of the war. Over 130,000 horses left Australia, of which only one has ever returned. Other animals used by the AIF, such as pigeons, dogs, mules, camels and donkeys, suffered the same fate. Lest we forget our four legged diggers served too. Australian War Animal Memorial organisation is a not for profit organisation promoting the placement of dedications to Animals who have served their country.

In Their Own Words – Letters From the Front

Presented by Grand Shirl’s Doll and Toy Museum

Presented by NTAQ, Brennan & Geraghty’s Store Museum

Presented by Maryborough Wide Bay & Burnett Historical Society Inc.

Take a step back in time and see alluring antique dolls and toys from the 1800s, including clockwork toys, unusual salt and pepper sets and a rare Holden Pedal Car made in 1944. There are hundreds of items on display, including a collection of beautiful french dolls – all waiting to welcome you. Bookings are required.

The historic mansion, Baddow House, built for Edgar and Maria Aldridge in 1883, is open for viewing. Built by one of the founders of Maryborough, Baddow House has been restored as a family home. This important Maryborough home is the third and grandest built for Aldridge and is a reflection of the wealth that he created in a fledgling township. Maryborough became an important agricultural region with the first trial crops of sugar cane being planted in the gardens at Baddow House.

Researched from the Maryborough Chronicles, ‘In Their Own Words – Letters from the Front’ takes extracts from the book of the same title published for the Centenary of WWI. Letters from Diggers to home were published at the time and shared with the local community. These letters give a fascinating insight into how stories of war activities were softened for those at home. Some of the Diggers made it home – some didn’t.

Have you ever driven past the Townsville RAAF museum on Ingham Road and wondered what it contained? Here is your chance to join a free guided tour of the collection. Bookings are required.

Join us for a guided tour of this landmark building in Townsville. Hear about the history of this large, brick, Gothic cathedral erected from 1896-1902 on the side of Castle Hill overlooking the central business district of the city. Bookings are required.

Armed with a bag of film and his camera, photojournalist Tim Page captured some of the most iconic images of the Vietnam War. Like many of those he photographed, Page was barely out of his teens and filled with the bravado of youth. Hear how the north’s own Kennedy Regiment served longer than any other during WWI. A presentation by librarian Barbara DeBono. The Kennedy Regiment emerged from the rural communities of North Queensland in the late 19th century. From the very first week of WWI the Kennedy men were involved in military action. A documentary film is a powerful medium for capturing the way people live. When we watch a documentary we can step into the past, and when we make a documentary, it is as if we are looking into a mirror. City Libraries will be screening a series of short, high-quality, locally-made documentaries that have featured on the ABC. Join us to discover the intimate lives of locals and the changing history of Townsville through these short films.

In this practical workshop, Museum curator May Abernethy will guide you through the process of constructing enclosures and archival quality boxes for your precious photographs, documents and books. No experience is necessary. Bring a photograph or document and a book or artefact to enclose. Preservation and conservation in the tropics will be discussed and you will have the opportunity to ask questions and receive advice on your own items. Bookings are required.

Two historical houses in a garden setting. Open to the public with musical performance by Fourth Sunday Folk Group. Tea and coffee served. A walk remembering ANZACs of Castling Street starting from the Cottage at the Heritage Centre in which one of the Gallipoli heroes was born.

The annual Townsville Heritage Day will feature almost three dozen community groups promoting Townsville’s rich history. There will also be the popular guided cemetery tours, free rides on the vintage Chevy bus, children’s activities and live entertainment. Free shuttle bus to and from the nearby National Trust Heritage Centre houses. Entry and activities are free; food and drink will be available for sale.
