Welcome The Australian Government supports the National Trust Heritage Festival through funding and promotion of events on the Australian Heritage Week website.

National Trust of Australia (Queensland) Discovery and Rediscoveries Welcome to the annual National Trust Heritage Festival, celebrated nationally in April and May. The Trust is very excited to be presenting another program of events and activities organised by many dedicated communities.

6 Supported by:

This year’s Festival theme is ‘Discovery and Rediscoveries’. It encourages us to discover a new experience, or rediscover something that has been lost, forgotten or concealed. I hope you will take this opportunity to discover or rediscover some of the wonderful places and stories that are showcased in this guide. Queensland has so much to offer, particularly in regional

areas, and it is always inspiring to see so many Festival entries from the north and west of the State. I thank all the participants, many of whom are community organisations and volunteers, for developing and hosting their special events. But our heritage reaches way beyond this Festival. Many are using this guide all year round to discover and rediscover interesting places through out Queensland. I hope you will too. The Trust is pleased to be linking the Heritage Festival to the Australian Government’s Heritage Week celebrations and thank the Australian Government for

continuing to support the National Trust Heritage Festivals across the nation. The National Trust is a membership based heritage organisation that thrives on community support. I would also like to encourage you all to become members of the National Trust to support and become more involved in the conservation of our wonderful natural and cultural heritage. To join up, visit www.nationaltrust.org. au/join/ Dr Ian Galloway President National Trust of Australia (Queensland)

Australian Heritage Week is held from Saturday 16 April to Sunday 24 April 2016. Graffiti Tours explore the images scrawled across the walls of heritage listed Number 2 Division. In the 1980s prisoners expressed their frustrations, anger, pain and humour in the form of graffiti on the surfaces of Number 2 Division. Through artwork, words, prose and poetry these today offer an authentic insight into what was going on in their minds and what was going on in and out of Boggo Road. References to Expo ’88, roof-top protests, music, passions and politics range from the crude and rude to the moving and powerful. Bookings are essential. Not suitable to children under 15yrs.

The second largest cemetery in Queensland, South Brisbane Cemetery – also known as Dutton Park Cemetery – hides many terrible tales. With the first recorded burial in 1870, it is one of the earliest burial grounds in the State. Gravediggers say it is Brisbane’s most creepy burial ground. Take an intimate two hour historic ghost tour with a Ghost Tour Guide. Hear real ghost stories and visit real haunted sites – hungry ghosts, spirits of criminals and the executed. Suitable for ages 12 and over. Bookings are essential.

Ex-Inmate/Ex-Officer Tours give you the inside story from an ex-inmate on a tour through Boggo Road Gaol’s heritage listed Number 2 Division. Tours are guided by a former prisoner who will share with you their firsthand accounts of what daily life was like inside the walls of one of Australia’s most notorious prisons. Bookings are essential. Some of the stories you will hear involve strong concepts and mature content – and therefore suitable for those aged 15 and over.

Visit the notorious Boggo Road Gaol. Hear ghost stories from prisoners and warders. Learn about the Gaol’s history, gallows and executions, as well as life and death inside the Gaol. Many warders and inmates had experiences they could not explain. As seen on Getaway and Great South East, this is one of Australia’s premier historical ghost tours. Bookings are essential. Suitable for ages 12 and over.

Petrie Terrace is one of Brisbane’s oldest and most fascinating localities. By the 1970s, stately terraces had been abandoned; musicians and artists were living in rickety tin and timber share houses. Places like the heritage listed 1880s Baroona Labor Hall (now Lefty’s Old Time Music Hall) played an important role for a new and exciting music emerging out of Brisbane. This event, hosted by Brisbane Open House and the DEHP, will explore the places of this period and beyond with John Willsteed, former member of The Go-Betweens. And Ritchie Yorke, internationally renowned rock journalist. Admission fees apply.

Be entertained by our costumed storytellers amongst the barrels from the 1860s in the Bond Store basement. The Bond Store was an essential part of the Port of Maryborough. The core of the building dates back to 1864 and still retains the earthen floor and ancient handmade bricks. Sample some regional produce and enjoy a regional tasting.

Take a free guided stroll through heritage listed Queens Park with historian Tom Ryan. Queens Park, established in 1860, has undergone many changes. At different stages it has featured a bush house, rose gardens, bridges, a small zoo, aviaries and a fernery.

Find out more about the people who relied on the store for their daily needs, from the 1870s to the early 1900s. Volunteers are currently delving into the shop ledgers and banking records and have already found the names of over 10,000 people who shopped here during that period. Ledgers and other documentation will be on display for visitors to view.

Charters Towers Heritage Guided Tours

Presented by National Trust of Australia (Qld)

A rare example of an arcade in Queensland, with architecture adapted to the stifling summer climate, the Stock Exchange Arcade is indicative of the rise and fall of fortune on the 19th century goldfield. The Stock Exchange was responsible for setting the price of gold and tapping into the world trade markets via telegraph three times per day. Wander through and discover features like the tessellated floor in the central hallway, the daily ‘calling of the card’ and the aspirational architecture that symbolised the wealth of the region during the nineteenth century.

The app includes a trail of historical photographs and information on the Lost Buildings in the Flinders Street area of Townsville City, in voice and text formats. This event is part of Townsville 150 Celebrations: 150 years since Townsville was declared a municipality. Bookings are required.

View a selection of items donated by Townsville people to the Townsville Local History collection. Chat to staff about the items and how they are preserved and available for public viewing. Do you hold items of significance to the history of Townsville?
