Crane Corner A Brief History of Cranes and Bosque del Apache Refuge

Sandra Noll

15,000 years ago a river coursed through this valley creating floodplains and multiple channels. Sandhill cranes, an ancient species based on fossil evidence from 2.5 million years ago, may well have stopped here even then. The earliest humans appeared at the end of the last Ice Age and for the next 10,000 years nomadic hunter-gatherers roamed the area. Their descendants eventually began to farm, matching their activities to the will and pulses of the river. Between 1598 and 1845 Spanish colonists arrived in increasing numbers. They named the area Bosque del Apache to describe the groves of cottonwood trees along the floodplain frequented by nomadic Apache. Piro (pueblo) settlements along the river near San Pasqual Mountain (southeastern corner of the refuge) became a resting place for Spanish caravans completing the Jornada del Muerto (Dead Man’s Journey), a dry desert crossing along El Camino Real de Tierra Adentro. As Americans moved West, settlement and farming increased, and between 1850 and 1900, dams and canals were constructed to control the river and irrigate fields. Wildlife habitats began to dry Robert Dunn

up and disappear as the historic floods and wanderings of the Rio Grande were blocked.

New Mexico became a state in 1912. Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge was established by the Executive Order of FDR in 1939 to provide a refuge and breeding ground for migratory birds and other wildlife. Considered an important wintering area for the then-endangered greater sandhill crane, it is remarkable that the first refuge census documented just 17 greater sandhills! The CCC (Civilian Conservation Corps) constructed a series of canals and began restoring wetlands. The number of cranes and other waterfowl began to grow. Today sandhills are the most abundant of the world’s 15 crane species, and thousands of sandhill cranes, geese and migratory waterfowl now winter on this carefully managed landscape.

Ed MacKerrow

The highly endangered whooping crane also has history at Bosque del Apache.

In the spring of 1975, in an experi-

mental effort to establish a second wild migratory flock of whooping cranes, their eggs were transferred to the nests of sandhill cranes at Gray’s Lake NWR in Idaho. Sandhill crane “foster parents” brought their “whooper” colts to their traditional wintering grounds here. As they matured, however, the fostered whooping cranes failed to form pair bonds with each other, pairing instead with sandhill cranes, and also suffered high mortality rates. The program was discontinued in 1989; no whooping cranes survive in this population. It is made up of four sessions over two days so you’ll certainly get your bang for your buck. The classroom portion begins in the early afternoon at 12:30 PM and lasts till 3:00 PM. You’ll be shown the ins and outs of what makes the difference between a great image of an avian subject vs a snapshot rendering. We’ll also discuss how to set up your cameras to acquire the best images of birds in flight. We’ll arrive at our first location by 3:30 PM to begin our two-and-a-half hours of photography. The highlight will be the fly ins of the sandhill cranes and snow geese as they roost in ponds to keep themselves safe during the night. The refuge represents the foresight, stewardship, and hard work of several generations, and it will persist as a legacy for future generations. To quote Aldo Leopold, “I do not imply that this philosophy of land was always clear to me. It is rather the end result of a life journey.” If Bosque del Apache is part of your journey, you can help to build that legacy with a planned gift that will be a lasting commitment to help sustain this valuable natural resource. The story is out. Bosque del Apache Refuge is a destination people choose to find; a place with magnificent beauty. Many first time visitors, on a journey of discovery, are stopped in their tracks. They have never seen anything like it, the birds, the views, …everything…and they never realized it was all here. Once they discover it, they want to come back. For many Bosque del Apache becomes the journey, the destination, a place and time full of meaning for them, a place they want to experience again and again, a place to share with their parents, their kids, and their friends. Regardless of what brought them here, their compass needle has moved and the journey on will be forever changed.

LBJ’s, little brown birds, another darn sparrow! Sparrows are one of the most diverse groups of birds in North America and one of the most frustrating. Most birder’s put off learning sparrows for as long as they can and why not when there are larger, easier to see, and more brightly colored birds to see! But when you finally sit down and start to study these birds, you’ll find that they are more beautiful than you’d expect. of his work from the 1950s-1960s. Lehrer wrote these songs parodying the musical theater song styles of the 1930s-1940s. One exception is “The Elements”, a setting of the periodic table to Gilbert and Sullivan. Poking fun at some of our most treasured institutions, the delightfully witty and clever songs cover a wide range of subjects from religion to Boy Scouts, racism to pollution, and the A-bomb to mathematics. Would you like an easy way to make a difference in the future of Bosque del Apache Refuge? Consider becoming a Sustaining Member! By enrolling in our automated monthly donation program, you increase our capacity to plan projects. As a Sustaining Member, you are part of a network of committed members preserving our refuge. This is a team of individuals and companies contributing to the development of sustainable solutions and achievement of long-term goals. Each new Sustaining Membership helps advance existing refuge, wildlife and habitat projects and initiate new projects to ensure the stewardship and conservation of a national treasure.

Tamron Image Master and professional nature photographer David Akoubian will demonstrate how to capture that image we all dream of. Whether you are wanting a sharp single bird as it cruises, a flock as it takes to the sky, or learning to pan with the bird for a more artsy image, technique is the key. Water Control Langemann Gates

The Loggerhead Shrike (Lanius ludovicianus) is a robinsized, masked, hook-billed passerine that hunts like a small hawk, preying upon invertebrates, reptiles, small mammals and small birds. Known as “butcher birds”, they impale their prey on sharp thorny vegetation or barbed wire.

The refuge has a plan to upgrade the water control system by removing existing structures and replacing them with new and improved “Langemann Gates.” The Southwest has been gripped in a prolonged drought, and as a result, wetlands and birds at the refuge are being impacted. To deliver water, the refuge maintains four primary delivery ditches and twelve groundwater wells that flow water to both the wetland habitat that is so critical to the wintering birds, and the agricultural land that provides additional food for the cranes. Currently the refuge accomplishes this with outdated ‘screw-gate’ water control structures that often fail. Langemann gates represent the future of water management and sound wetland conservation for the refuge. Adopting this project is one of the best ways to invest donations in habitat improvement for wetlands, birds and endangered species.

habitats across North America. A general decline over many different habitats and regions has aroused serious concern. Though this decline is often attributed to loss or degradation of habitat, reasons for decline are not clearly defined. Envirological Services, Inc. has been conducting a study on this amazing bird for the last six years, and would like to share with the audience many aspects of this bird’s striking beauty, unique biology and fascinating behavior. In sum, each Langemann gate creates a mini dam of water pressure that effectively and efficiently moves water to the wetlands in a way that far exceeds the capabilities of the current system. Cranes: Ambassadors for Conservation

When people commit to saving cranes, they also commit to the future of the ecosystems and watersheds that sustain cranes, people, and the diversity of life on earth. Cranes are among the most endangered families of birds in the world, with 11 of 15 species threatened and many populations in peril. Over the next 20 years, emerging challenges will further jeopardize cranes and the places where they live--the rapid development of China (home to eight crane species), for example, and the impact of climate change on regional water supplies and wetlands in Africa, Asia, and the USA. Yet the special characteristics of cranes, their cultural significance, high visibility, extraordinary beauty, dramatic migrations, and striking behavior, also create unique opportunities for conservation action. We will explore the role of cranes as both sentinels and flagships for conservation in some of the great river basins around the world--- engaging Zambezi River water authorities in releasing environmental flows for cranes, large mammals, and human livelihoods; securing some of world’s most outstanding wetlands in the Amur-Heilong River Basin of China, Russia and Mongolia; demonstrating the importance of natural water fluctuations in sustaining Poyang Lake, the most important freshwater ecosystem in China; realizing improved livelihoods from the holistic management of Mekong River wetlands; and promoting sustainable water management practices for the Guadalupe River Basin aimed at protecting critical habitat areas for endangered whooping cranes on their wintering grounds in Texas. We will also highlight the unique story of crane recovery in Wisconsin and the role of cranes in conserving some of our most treasured landscapes. Rich will also be presenting his keynote with discussion on Saturday 12:00 PM as a featured speaker. Keynote presentation follows the Friends Annual Dinner. Starting at ~7:30 PM; the keynote presentation is free with a purchased dinner. Bodega Burger Co. Restaurant is located at 606 California Street in Socorro.

Friends of the Bosque del Apache NWR Throughout the world, rivers and their floodplains provide clean drinking water and support agriculture, fisheries, and other vital ecosystem services that sustain our livelihoods. They nourish a remarkable biodiversity of plants and animals. Our most threatened cranes – Siberian, whooping, red-crowned, wattled, and others – are intricately dependent on river floodplains for their survival. But these magnificent places where cranes and waters meet are in trouble. Within our lifetime, the global population will reach nine billion people, one billion will suffer from inadequate drinking water, and water shortages for agriculture will threaten food security for many. Political tensions already loom over the access to water and energy, and global climate change may further destabilize regions that are already water-stressed. To help resolve this crisis, thousands of dams and water diversions are being planned and built. Big dams seem like an important part of the solution – they divert water to cities and irrigation schemes, and generate hydropower as a renewable source of energy. But these dams and diversions come at great cost to

world, with 11 of 15 species threatened and many populations in peril. We will explore the role of cranes as both sentinels and flagships for conservation in some of the great river basins around the world--- engaging Zambezi River water authorities in releasing environmental flows for cranes, large mammals, and human livelihoods, securing some of world’s most outstanding wetlands in the Amur-Heilong River Basin of China, Russia and Mongolia; demonstrating the importance of natural water fluctuations in sustaining Poyang Lake, the most important freshwater ecosystem in China; realizing improved livelihoods from the holistic management of Mekong River wetlands; and Paul Bardwell
