‘Organisers say June 4 & 5, 2022 is new date’
No Sol Rally Barbados 2021. But title sponsors Sol remain committed to the Barbados Rally Club’s premier event. Contested over 24 special stages on an intricate network of public roads, the rally was scheduled for the weekend of September 25/26, after Flow King of the Hill, which would have been contested on the previous Sunday. “We have not taken this decision lightly and have done so with health and safety uppermost in our minds, but fully understand the significant impact it will have on competitors, spectators, our loyal overseas visitors and our valued partners,” the 65 year old club said in a statement. General Manager, Sol Barbados Ltd, Roger Barrow, in confirming the company’s commitment, said Sol remains committed to supporting the event. Next year’s scheduled dates are Sunday, May 29 for King of the Hill and the weekend of June 4/5 for Sol Rally Barbados 2022, with on-line entries opening on Friday, October 1, 2021, on the event web site, rallybarbados.net. The club’s public relations officer (PRO) Neil Barnard said the decision is massively disappointing for the organising team, which had worked extremely hard trying to overcome a number of obstacles to make this year’s 32nd running of the BRC’s blue riband event a reality. “Much of the work already completed can be carried over to next year, though, so we remain positive,” the PRO noted. In the coming weeks, the Committee of Management will be considering the possible use of the September dates for rounds of the Club’s Driver’s & Class Championships, run in whatever format can be accommodated within the Government protocols in force at the time. The Sol Group, title sponsors of the event since 2008, said the company remains committed to supporting the Sol Rally Barbados 2021 event, now postponed to 2022. “We wish to thank competitors at home and from overseas who have participated in Sol Rally Barbados and contributed to its remarkable success and look forward to 2022 and to everyone’s continued support of the event and of our island,” Barnard added.
Zane Maloney wins BRC opening double-header Page 2
Euro Formula 3 driver Zane Maloney won in both directions at the opening round of the Barbados Rally Club (BRC) 2021 championship. Competing in the club’s double-header Sprint at Bushy Park, St Philip, behind closed doors, in line with current Covid-19 directives, Maloney topped the tables at the opening event of the BRC’s Driver’s and Class Championships. It was a close-fought affair, as drivers embraced the return to competition after a six-month break. In event one, driving the Skoda Fabia R5 campaigned last year by his uncle Stuart, the younger maloney was quickest on the first run, with a time of 2m 30.57s, just 19/100ths ahead of Dane Skeete’s Subaru Impreza WRC S12. Stuart Maloney, armed with a new Fabia Rally2 Evo, was third (2:31.46) with an impressive debut for Adam Mallalieu, sharing father Andrew’s Ford Fiesta R5 for the first time, slotting him in fourth (2:32.97). Non-starter Ahmed Esuf (Fiesta) had reduced the record-breaking FIA R5 class entry to eight, of which three more – Roger Hill (Fabia), Mallalieu Snr and the Turks & Caicos Rally Team’s Stan Hartling, driving his Fiesta in competition for the first time – were ahead of number one seed, Jamaica’s Jeff Panton (Fiesta WRC) on the first run. Teenager Maloney improved by more than 3secs on his second run, 2:27.43 would be his best, as did uncle Stuart (2:27.48), while Skeete did not record a time, to slip to fourth in the order behind
multiple circuit champion Mark Maloney, who was sharing the older Fabia with Zane. While Skeete improved on his third run (2:27.64) to slot in behind Zane and Stuart Maloney – just two-tenths spread across the trio – Panton was still in trouble, spinning near the finish of run three and losing time finding a gear. The Jamaican finally redeemed himself in the last of four runs, clocking 2:28.29 to place him fourth, less than 1sec adrift of the winner The rest of the top 10 also set their best times on the final run, Mark Maloney moving to fifth (2:28.41), Adam Mallalieu slipping to sixth (2:29.18) but still ahead of father Andrew (2:32.15), with Hill (2:32.54) eight ahead of the Turks & Caicos pair of Paul Horton (Fiesta – 2:34.55) and Hartling (2:34.77). Event One started by the drag racing start pad, the course heading uphill to the service road behind Race Control, back down through the tunnel, right on the circuit, then repeating that loop before including most of the International Circuit and the Rallycross Bridge. Event Two ran in the opposite direction, with only one loop of the service road. By now sharing the Fabia Rally2 Evo with both uncles, Stuart and Mark, as the older car had developed engine problems, Zane was again quickest on the first run (2:19.36), with Stuart, (2:22.82), Panton (2:22.61), Skeete (2:22.82) and, once again, Adam Mallalieu (2:23.00) the closest challengers. While the youngest Maloney maintained his advantage despite missing the second run, the others
all improved, Skeete moving ahead of Panton to second and the younger Mallalieu outpacing Stuart Maloney, although he would slip behind again by the finish as he was the only one of the top six not to improve again. Hill finished sixth, ahead of Mark Maloney, Horton and Andrew Mallalieu, with Josh Read’s Toyota Starlet 10th and top 2wd. Of his victories, 17-yearold Maloney said: “I came out to have some fun, but the engine had an issue, so we had to jump in to share uncle Stuart's new Skoda. I tried to focus on getting the most out of the car, while still being smooth and nailing the exits, which is the quickest way. Once I am here for Sol Rally Barbados, I'd like to have a go.” Panton said: “The first two runs my times were way off and I had a spin into the gate by the finish, but I got closer to Dane and Zane in the other runs and the other direction. I don't know if the car doesn't suit the tighter track courses, but I felt comfortable today, so congrats to Zane.” Skeete, meanwhile, was just pleased to be back in action: “I was glad to smell some race fuel after being out of the car for so long. I can't say that I felt out of touch in the car as the circuit isn't the truest representation of the road, however competition is competition and I was happy to get some runs in.” As expected the battle for 2wd and SuperModified 2 honours was spectacular, Andrew Jones (Ford Escort MkII) painting black stripes on the road right from his launch off the startline for the first run, while Barry Mayers (Ford Fiesta) had an

Flawless performance gives Boodhoo AutoCross title
AutoCross marshals came in for high praise as drivers settled round three of the Barbados Rally Club’s (BRC) AutoCross at Bushy Park July 17. Clerk of the Course Geoff Goddard called it ‘a job well done’ by the marshals as four time AutoCross champion Omar Boodhoo dominated the proceedings at the well-known racing facility. Goddard also thanked the Start Team of Richard Daniel, Donelle Eastmond and John Jones and the Finish Team of Maurice Mason, Michelle King , Leslie Evanson and Tameisha Fenty assisted by the Chief Timekeeper Jason Downey. He also included the husband and wife pair of Ron and Giselle Layne in his praise, who mtook charge of marshaling points due to a shortage of man power But Boodhoo was the driver of the event, using his experience to dominate Round # 3 of the 2021 Championship at the wheel of a Subaru Impreza WRX 2000, competing in the 4WD Street Tyre Class.
He recorded the fastest time in each of the five runs and also recorded no cone penalties throughout the event. He was competing against a field of 33 competitors which included Jody Forte in his Subaru BRZ 2000. Forte, who was fourth overall in the 2020 Championship, was competing in his first event for this year and was entered in the 2WD Race Tyre Class and would provide the closest competition to Boodhoo during the event. First time competitor to Autocross Carlos Edwards had brought out his nephew Seth Edwards, who was in the Junior Class, and they were sharing one of four of the Bushy Park Suzuki Swift Sport 1600 Cup Cars which were rented for the event. The course proved to be quite challenging for some of the competitors as there were many cone penalties recorded for the third and 4th cone's after the start line as well as while maneuvering through the partial figure eight on the main straight in front of the club-

Run # 1 started with the battle between Boodhoo and Forte with Boodhoo recording the fastest time of 1.07.44 and Forte a 1.07.79. third was second year Rookie Matthew Durant in his Toyota GT86 2000 with a time of 1.09.15 while fourth was Jamal Boodhoo in his Mitsubishi Colt 1600 on one minute 11.98 and fifth was veteran Allan Kinch in his BMW 318 TI 1900 at one minute 12.82. There was a total of 12 DNF'S for this run as competitors negotiated the partial figure eight. Boodhoo continued to top the time sheets in Run # 2 improving to record a time of 1.06.54 and Forte record-
ed a 1.08.67 while Jamal Boodhoo improved with a time of 1.08.91. This would turn out to be his best time as due to a mechanical problem with his car he did not start any of the other three runs. Allan Kinch was 4th fastest on 1.11.94 as he was very impressive on the handbrake turns around the 180 cones in the partial figure eight section. Rookie Andros Welch, who was sharing the Toyota GT86 2000 with Matthew Durant, rounded out the top five with a time of 1.12.36. 14 DNF'S were recorded during this run. Run # 3 and Omar continued his cone free runs with another improvement of his time to 1.05.05. 2nd fastest was Stephen Nicholls in his Nissan March 1600 who was recovering from DNF'S in Run # 1 and # 2 and was showing some very impressive handbrake turns while making his 180 turns. He would record a time of 1.09.15. Kinch continued to show his ability on the handbrake
and was third fastest with another improvement on his time to record 1.11.83 while Derek Edwards in his BMW 318 TI 1900 was fourth with a time of 1.13.05 and said that he was having problems with his handbrake. Cont’d on page 5 ,,,

The DNF situation was improving as competitors were sorting out their errors and only five were recorded in this run. Run # 4 and even recording a slower time Omar was still fastest in this run on 1.06.65. Jody was putting in a master class display of driving especially with the controlled smoothness of his handbrake turns around the 180 cones in the partial figure 8 and lowered his time to 1.07.20. Stephen would be slightly slower than his previous run on 1.09.41 and Derek would be considerably faster with a time of 1.09.46 after he had replaced a part which finally had his handbrake working.Allan produced his best run to record the top 5 time in this run at 1.11.53 and this would also be his best time of the day,and good enough for 8th fastest overall, as he recorded a DNF in the final run. Seven DNF'S were recorded for this run. Run # 5 and competitors were making the final push to record their best times including Boodhoo however even though he had another penalty free run he was slower with a time of 1.05.71 which would still be fastest for this run. This meant that his Run # 3 time of 1.05.05 would be the fastest time ecorded for the event. Stephen had another impressive run wih some great car control however he recorded a slower time of 1.09.53 which would mean that his Run # 3 time of 1.09.15 would be his best for the day as well as 4th fastest overall.Andros Welch recorded his best time of the day 1.10.11 which was 3rd fastest for this run and also 7th fastest time overall.Derek stopped the clock at 1.08.68 but received a 1 cone penalty for a final time of 1.10.68 and 4th fastest in this run however this was no improvement on his Run # 4 time of 1.09.46 which was also the 6th fastest
overall time. Carlos saved the best for last and recorded 1.12.34 to round out the top 5 in this run and good enough for 9th fastest overall. Another 7 DNF'S were recorded for this final run. Natya Soodeen was impressive in her BMW 318 ti 1900 topping the women’s Class. Her best time of 1.13.79 would also be 11th fastest overall. Matthew Durant in his Toyota GT86 2000 was fastest among the Motoring News Rookie category competitors with a time of 1.09.15 and this was also the 5th fastest overall time. Jamal Boodhoo was fastest in the 2WD Street Tyre Class in his Mitsubishi Colt 1600 with a time of 1.08.91 and thirrd fastest overall. This was an impressive performance as he only drove two runs during the event due to a mechanical problem with his car. Jody Forte was very impressive in his return to Autocross and his time of

Hoad leads BRC standings Chris Hoad is at the top of the standings of the Barbados Rally Club (BRC). Driving the Subway/Dasani Water/ Guava Tech BimmaCup BMW 318ti and after his third straight win in the competitive and of a well-subscribed Clubman 2 class in his Rookie season in the championship he has moved clear at the top with 45 points after sharing the overall lead with Stuart Maloney and Josh Read after the Double-Header Sprint at Bushy Park in June. Round three at the Vaucluse Raceway (July 18) was organised by the Motoring Club Barbados Inc (MCBI) and shared with the BRC for championship points after Covid-19 restrictions caused the planned Double-Header closed-road sprint to be replaced by a single pointsscoring RallySprint. Driving against nine other BimmaCup drivers in Clubman 2, Hoad’s winning time (set in the quarterfinal) was 1.8 seconds faster than that set by Derek Edwards, scoring his first points of the year, having withdrawn himself from the Bushy Park results when he realised his tyres did not
conform to the regulations. Third fastest was Wayne Archer, who is second in the C2 standings, with 32 points. Hoad, who finished second in VRMSC’s BimmaCup last year, said: “I didn’t know what to expect when I decided to do the whole Rally Club Championship, as Clubman 2 is heavily subscribed with good drivers. I’m just trying to keep focused one event at a time. Although I visited the podium a couple of times in 2019 and 2020, my first overall win was in the RallySprint in June, a week after the BRC double header at Bushy Park, and now the Motoring Club RallySprint. Even though it’s not my strongest discipline, I’m looking to keep the streak going in the BimmaCup Rallycross on August 14.” Second in the champion driver table, two points adrift of Hoad, Maloney (Skoda Fabia Rally2 Evo) was beaten by just 18/100ths at VRW by Adam Mallalieu (Ford Fiesta), who claimed his first class win, having finished second on points to Maloney at Bushy Park. The 17-yearold is also now joint third overall, two further points behind, with Josh Read
Weetabix Toyota Starlet, who was beaten to the SuperModified 2 class win in the RallySprint by Andrew Jones in the Gale’s Agro/A P Jones Pharmacy/Southern Surf Beach Apartments Ford Escort MkII, both suffering from a lower points haul as the class was undersubscribed. Read and Jones are also first and second in the 2wd Championship, with reigning champion driver Neil Corbin (SM1 Starlet) third, also fifth in the overall title chase and another scoring less for his win at VRW in an undersubscribed class. Dane Skeete (Subaru Impreza WRC S12) leads the 4wd championship by two points from Jamaica’s Jeff Panton (Ford Fiesta WRC), who notched up his first WRC win of the season by just nine-tenths in the RallySprint; Maloney is third and Mallalieu fourth. As a result of the postponement of the two events, the committee of management is considering using the September dates for rounds of the driver’s & class championships, run in whatever format can be accommodated within the Government protocols in force at the time.

Mercedes, Red Bull tweak ahead of rule changes
Defending world F1 Champions Mercedes.
It was supposed to be a low-cost final year of in Formula 1 and a technical format extended by a year before the all-new aero regulations come in, with stringent restrictions on which parts of the car could not be changed. The idea was a one-year extension of the life of the existing cars, given the economic challenges caused by the pandemic. But F1 ingenuity has found a way to innovate performance. It was maybe helped in this by the concurrent regulation aero tweaks made in the interests of containing downforce increases. Cutting the floor area, banning the floor slots and louvres and restricting the size of diffuser strakes and brake duct winglets gave the teams something to work on. Clawing back the performance which had been
taken away became the objective – as well as striving to cut the gap to Mercedes for all the others. But we have seen several new features for the first time this year despite the restrictions of homologation, costs and retention of existing monocoques. No matter what restrictions are put in place, F1 adapts. In their initial designs Red Bull, Ferrari and Alpine all found ways of emulating Mercedes’ innovation of sweeping back the rear suspension to give more space around the diffuser for the aerodynamicists to exploit. This was despite the token system restricting how such changes could be made. Existing pick-up points were retained but reconfigured for different uses to achieve much the same effect as on the 2020 Mercedes, which had been
created without such restrictions. Then there were the unique development features. The cutting away of the floor edges and banning of their slots generated many different workarounds to recreate the spinning vortices of air at the edge of the floor’s underside which aerodynamically seal it, allowing it to create the negative pressure which pulls the car into the track. Earthquake in Haiti:White Helmets providing health assistance The White Helmets Commission, which reports to the Argentine Foreign Ministry, is providing healthcare assistance in the Corail commune, Grand'Anse Department, Haiti, where it set up a Type-1 Hospital. The group’s presence will increase local healthcare capacity, which was seriously affected by a massive earthquake. The Hospital, which deals with a high level of demand and is staffed by specialized Argentine healthcare personnel, is already operational. The humanitarian mission, made up of 24 volunteers and led by White Helmets President, Marina Cardelli, deployed a Type-1 Emergency Medical Team providing outpatient emergency care, paediatric, clinical medicine, obstetric and traumatology-related servic-

Thanks to the will of President Alberto Fernández and the determination of Foreign Minister Felipe Solá, today, Argentina, in the spirit of solidarity, can help once again the Haitian people. The volunteers and authorities present are proud to represent our country by providing humanitarian assistance on the ground. The earthquake struck Haiti at a time of much hardship and we are going to cooperate as much as possible, while respecting the country s sovereignty and the will of its people, stated Cardelli in Corail. Kentucky site for fuel cell plant
After thousands of miles of real-world testing in the harsh environment of commercial trucking, Toyota is preparing to further expand its portfolio approach to products by taking its groundbreaking hydrogen-powered fuel cell electric technology from prototypes to production in its efforts toward carbon neutrality. Starting in 2023, a dedicated line at Toyota Motor Manufacturing Kentucky (TMMK) will begin assembling integrated dual fuel cell (FC) modules destined for use in hydrogenpowered, heavy-duty commercial trucks. The FC modules bring Toyota’s electrification strategy further into focus as it will allow truck manufacturers to incorporate emissionsfree fuel cell electric technology into existing platforms with the technical support of Toyota under the hood. “We’re bringing our proven electric technology to a whole new class of production vehicles,” said Tetsuo Ogawa, president and chief executive officer, Toyota Motor North America. “Heavy-duty truck manufacturers will be able to buy a fully integrated and validated fuel cell electric drive system, allowing them to offer their customers an emissionsfree option in the Class 8 heavy-duty segment.” The dual fuel cell modules, which are a key component of an overall FC kit, weigh approximately 1,400 pounds and can deliver up to 160kW of continuous power. The FC kit also includes a high voltage battery, electric motors, transmission and hydrogen storage assembly from top-tier suppliers. Toyota will also offer its powertrain integration expertise that will help truck manufacturers adapt these emissions-free drivetrain systems to a wide variety of applications in the heavy-duty trucking sector. “This second-generation fuel cell system is necessary for a carbon neutral future,” says David Rosier, Toyota Kentucky powertrain head. “It delivers over 300 miles of range at a full load weight of 80,000 lbs., all while demonstrating exceptional drivability, quiet operation and zero harmful emissions.”Toyota will display this technology at the 2021 Advanced Clean Transportation (ACT) Expo in Long Beach, California from August 31-Sept. 1”, Rosier noted.

The seventh generation Nissan Z.
The Power of Z: Nissan preparing 9-speed automatic transmission The all-new 2023 Z stays true to its performance roots, with a powerful 6cylinder under the hood; a Front Midship, rear-wheeldrive design that places the engine farther back in the chassis for enhanced balance; and a suspension that makes you feel hard-wired to the road. It’s an authentic sports car in the purest sense of the word. It's a new Nissan Z. Well, specifically, it's the seventh generation of Nissan's iconic sports car. It is the first to snip the numeric portion from the model designation in favor of the clean and
simple name of just "Z." Since the first 240Z rolled into American Datsun dealerships in 1969, the three digits tagged to the Z car's badge signified the displacement of the six-cylinder under the hood. Thus in the 240Z, this translated to 2.4 liters. The 300ZX, as another example, had a 3.0-liter V-6. No points awarded for guessing the engine size of the 350Z and most recent 370Z. There's no cheat sheet for what the Z is packing under its sharp-edged front hood. A cool 25 years after the Z32-generation 300ZX
Twin Turbo blasted away from our shores, turbocharging returns to the Z family in the form of a 3.0-liter twin-turbo V-6. New name, not-so-new engine. Actually, you'll notice that's a fairly common theme with the new 2023 Z. Instead of an all-new, ground-up redesign on a new platform, Nissan slathered a veneer of modern-spec materials, powertrain pieces, and infotainment tech over the 11-yearold bones of the outgoing 370Z. This means there's also some 350Z DNA floating
No cheat sheet for what the Nissan Z it is packing under its sharp-edged front hood. around in the new Z's tank, considering this FM platform stretches back to the Z's return to the U.S. market in 2002. Back to that V-6. Those familiar with the greasy bits inside the current Infiniti Q50 and Q60 will recognise the VR30DDTT 3.0-liter
twin-turbo V-6 sitting pretty in the Z's engine bay. A thick 400 hp and 350 lbft of torque vapes the rear tyres through the lone choice of a nine-speed automatic transmission. Just kidding! What is this, a Toyota GR Supra? In reality, all 2023 Nissan Zs can
be spec'd with a six-speed manual transmission complete with a tuner-tastic Exedy clutch.

Verstappen wins Dutch Grand Prix
Red Bull driver Max Verstappen leads the way to victory in the Dutch Grand Prix September 5,2021, ahead of Mercedes’ drivers Lewis Hamilton and Valterie Bottas.
Max Verstappen has moved back to the head of the drivers’ standings, after winning the Dutch Grand Prix at Zandvoort over title rival Lewis Hamilton, sending his home fans into ecstasy, as the second Mercedes of Valtteri Bottas completed the podium. In the first Dutch Grand Prix since 1985, Verstappen led away from pole, keeping Hamilton at bay throughout the 72-lap encounter around the sweeping Zandvoort track, to bring home his seventh win of the season, as Hamilton had to settle for second, the seven-time champion stopping with two laps to go for softs. Bottas was a comfortable third, despite his own late stop for soft tyres, with
Bottas appearing to then ignore team orders not to attempt to take the fastest lap bonus point away from Hamilton – only for Hamilton to claim it anyway on the final lap. Bottas led home the AlphaTauri of Pierre Gasly, who drove a brilliant race to take fourth, ahead of the Ferrari of Charles Leclerc. Fernando Alonso was sixth for Alpine, having passed the second Ferrari of Carlos Sainz on the last lap. Sainz was ahead of the second Red Bull of Sergio Perez, who recovered well from his pit lane start and an early flat spot in the race to take P8, with the second Alpine and of Esteban Ocon and the McLaren of Lando Norris – who’d been
allowed past his 11th placed team mate Daniel Ricciardo earlier in the race – rounding out the top 10. Lance Stroll was 12th, ahead of Aston Martin team mate Sebastian Vettel, then the Alfa Romeo pairing of Antonio Giovinazzi and Kimi Raikkonen replacement Robert Kubica in P14 and P15, with Nicholas Latifi taking 16th – as George Russell was classified 17th, ahead of Mick Schumacher, with Yuki Tsunoda and Nikita Mazepin retiring. But the Dutch fans only had eyes for one driver, greeting Verstappen’s win with jubilation, as he moved three points clear of Hamilton in the standings.

The all-new Coralla Cross hybrid cross-over in Barbados and available from dealers Nassco Ltd.
New vehicles coming from Japanese automaker Toyota would be unveiling three models over the coming months that will bring hybrids into ever-sharper focus in the evolving era of electrification. The launching of the new Coralla Cross hybrid crossover in Barbados recently, led the way as local dealers Nassco Ltd celebrated their 50th anniversary, but the car will reach other dealership showrooms by October, to be followed by a new RAV4 plug-in SUV in December and a revised hybrid Camry saloon. Industry insiders got a look at all three in the flesh
recently as Irish distributors started a major push for advance bookings. Seen then was the Yaris Cross hybrid, built alongside the Yaris supermini. It’s quite a substantial car and slots into an ever-expanding segment – targeting singles and couples in their thirties. There’s a heavy emphasis on styling, spec and safety; a centre airbag protects passengers from bumping into each other in a side impact, alomg with new collision mitigation elements and pedestrian detection systems that work in daylight and night time. Most models
will be 2WD but there will be AWD later. Despite the extra height (it’s also 240mm longer, wider and has more ground clearance than the Yaris hatchback) there is a low centre of gravity, which means handling should be good. Toyota has also added a new Adventure grade to emphasise “life beyond urban streets”. The 116hp 1.5-litre petrol hybrid powertrain is expected to register emissions from 101g/km for the frontwheel drive and 115g/km in the AWD-i models.
They claim the hybrid system is capable of powering the car in electric-only mode for 82pc of the time it
is being driven. Overall consumption is put at 4.5litres/100km which is effectively 60mpg in old
capacity. Boot space is up 111mm on the hatch and, depending on grade, there is a flexible cargo deck.

WRC Acropolis Rally is back
A legendary WRC fixture which returns to the championship for the first time since 2013. It’s the WRC EKO Acropolis Rally Greece 2021. Twisty rocky mountain
roads combine with high temperatures and choking dust to provide a fierce challenge. The tracks are smoother than they used to be but still pose punishing demands on tyres and cars.
Many drivers and codrivers have no previous Acropolis experience and must acclimatise quickly to the demanding characteristics of the mountain tracks. Hard base roads and high temperatures are tough on tyres and cars. Conditions are especially tricky on repeated stages, when rocks and bedrock unearthed during the first pass can be especially damaging. Car Setup Gravel suspension. Additional protection fitted to protect cars from the punishing roads. Drivers raise the ride height for rock-strewn roads during the second pass of stages. Pirelli’s hard and soft compound Scorpion tyres available. Everything is new in this rally since it has not been held since 2018 and has not appeared in the WRC since 2013. Highlights The return to the WRC of iconic special stages including Bauxites, Aghi Theodori, Elatia, Pavliani and Tarzan. Thursday’s evening’s opening street stage in the centre of Athens comprises a couple of loops round Syntagma Square, the city’s most important square. It passes in front of the 19th century Old Royal Palace which has housed the Greek Parliament since 1934.
The fancied pair of Ott Tanak and Martin Jarveoja in a Hyundai 120 WRC. Friday’s tyre zone in Loutraki is just a few kilometres from the spectacular Corinth Canal, which separates the Peloponnese from the mainland. Rock walls rise almost 50 metres above the narrow channel, providing dramatic views. The Acropolis Rally was first held in 1953 and was a founding member of the FIA World Rally Championship in 1973. In the 1970s it regularly comprised more than 50 stages and 850 competitive kilo-
metres. Apart from 1974, when it was cancelled due to an oil crisis, and 1995, when it was an FIA Two-Litre Cup round only, it remained in the series until 2010. It returned in 2011 but was dropped from the WRC at the end of 2013, after which it became a European Championship round. In 2005 the Acropolis was named Rally of the Year following a hugely successful super special stage in a packed Olympic Stadium in Athens.
Colin McRae is the Acropolis master with five wins between 1996 and 2002. He won twice in a Subaru Impreza before a hat-trick of wins from 2000 in a Ford Focus. Other winners include former world champions Walter Röhrl, Björn Waldegård, Ari Vatanen, Miki Biasion, Juha Kankkunen, Carlos Sainz and Sébastien Loeb. Ford tops the manufacturers’ roll of honour with 13 wins.
Stages
After Thursday’s late-afternoon start ceremony at the foot of Athens’ iconic Acropolis citadel, the action starts immediately with a 1km city centre street stage around Syntagma Square. After overnighting in Athens, competitors head west to the Peloponnese peninsula for a double run through Aghii Theodori. It sandwiches a single pass of Loutraki and a tyre fitting zone in the town, close to the Corinth Canal. Thiva and Elatia take crews to evening service in Lamia after 89.40km of competition. Saturday is the longest and toughest leg with 132.56 competitive kilometres south of the city. Long stages in Pavliani and Gravia lead to a tyre fitting zone in Itea, after which the famous Bauxites and Eleftherohori precede service. The day ends with second passes through Pavliani and Eleftherohori. Sunday’s finale is west of Lamia. The legendary Tarzan and Pyrgos, at 33.20km the longest test of the rally, takes crews to a tyre fitting zone in Sperchiada, before the closing Wolf Power Stage through a shortened version of Tarzan. The 15 tests cover 292.19km.

Hyundai Kona unveiled
The 2021 Hyundai Kona finishes near the top of the subcompact SUV rankings. This crossover has composed handling, a smooth ride, and a well-built cabin, making it one of the most well-rounded vehicles in the class. The notable change for the 2021 Hyundai Kona is the introduction of the new Night Edition trim, which slots into the lineup between the SEL Plus and Limited trims. Here are the key changes for the Hyundai Kona since it was introduced for 2018: *2019: gained more standard driver assistance features, including forward collision warning, lane keep assist, and pedestrian detection; all-electric Kona EV (which we review separately) debuted 2020: gained available adaptive cruise control; renamed trim lineup 2021: Night Edition trim joins lineup. The Kona's cargo capacity behind the rear seats, 19.2 cubic feet, is typical for the class. However, its maximum capacity of 45.8 cubic feet with the rear seats fold-
ed down is below average compared to other small crossovers. The Kona seats five people. The front-row seats provide plenty of head- and legroom and are comfortable and supportive, even on longer drives. The rear seats are a tighter squeeze. They're not as spacious as some competitors' rear seats, and many adults will wish for more leg room. The Kona looks good inside. There are some hard plastics interspersed with quality materials, but the interior has modern styling and a nice feel overall. This Hyundai features a user-friendly infotainment system. You can adjust settings via the responsive touch screen or physical controls, and the buttons are easy to see and reach from the driver's seat, some of the touch-screen buttons are small. Standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto make it easy to sync your smartphone to the system. Standard infotainment features: a 7-inch touch screen, Apple CarPlay,
