Mirage Mirage is inspired by the rich colours donned by Ancient Egyptian rulers and the ornately decorated masks and amulets that they believed would aid them through the afterlife. It was also inspired by the luxurious gold they believed to be divine because of its association with the sun’s brilliance.

This bracelet is named after William Spratling who revived the Mexican heritage of handmade silver in Taxco in the early 20th century. Glossary Amazonite is also known as the Amazon Stone. It is a gemstone that varies in colour from mint green to aqua green. Its unique colour is due to iron impurities and can sometimes resemble nephrite and jadeite. Amazonite’s appearance is very distinctive with its grid-like, mottled, green and white pattern. It is variety of microcline feldspar.

Amethyst is a purple variety of quartz. Its colour can vary from light pinkish violet to a deep purple. The best variieties can be found in Siberia, Sri Lanka and Brazil. Amethyst is the birthstone of February.

Apatite is a phosphate mineral that occurs in crystal form, and gemstone quality is quite rare. Apatite is composed of calcium phosphate, the same material that makes up teeth and bones and its hardness is rated 5 on the Mohs scale. Gemstone quality apatite generally comes in blue to green and golden colouring

Aquamarine is a blue form or beryl, which is a mineral composed of beryllium alunminium cyclosilicate.

Black Agate and Black Onyx are both forms of chalcedony, a member of the quartz family. In their natural form both materials show bands or streaks, thus both are usually enhanced with dye to produce an even colour. These stones can be sandblasted to create a matte texture.

Blue Lace Agate is a form of chalcedony and is named for its lace-like patterns.

The pale blue is its natural color, unlike other agates that are often dyed. Blue lace agate is found in Africa and is a particularly hard stone.

Carnelian is a form of the mineral chalcedony. It can vary greatly in colour from pale orange to dark, reddish brown and obtains its colour from the iron content in the stone.

Chalcedony has a waxy luster and may be semitransparent or translucent. It comes in a variety of colours, mainly pink, aqua, pale blue and soft yellow.

Citrine is a variety of quartz and ranges in colour from pale yellow to brown (caused by iron impurities). Natural citrines are rare, most commercial citrines are heat - treated amethyst.

Glossary Crystal is a quartz that is either fully or nearly transparent and is either colourless or only slightly tinged.

Malachite features a distinctive and desirable layered pattern. The stone often forms as a result of weathering copper ores, giving the stone its signature layers and stripes.

Freshwater pearls are formed by inserting a plastic or shell nucleus inside a mollusc. The mollusc secretes a solution which forms around the nucleus and eventually develops into a pearl.

Garnet is a silicate mineral that has been used since the Bronze Age as a gemstone. It is a generally a darkish red colour but can be found in orange, yellow and green

Gold Obsidian is a naturally occuring volcanic glass formed as a result of quickly cooled lava. It is very hard and brittle. It is black/brown usually with impurities and inclusions of magnetite, an iron oxide.

Iolite is the gem variety of the mineral Cordierite. It describes the transparent to a translucent form Cordierite and has recently become a popular gemstone. Iolite can be a light to deep blue, and usually a purplish tinge to it. It is said to help recover balance and restore a sense of perspective.

Lemon Quartz is a trade name for a lemon-yellow variety of colour enhanced transparent quartz. The clear quartz is subjected to gamma-ray irradiation and mild heat treatment to achieve the soft lemon colour. It is also known as Oro Verde Quartz.

Lapis Lazuli is a metamorphic rock featuirng flashes and flakes of metallic yellow thanks to its mineral component which includes Pyrite. The intense deep blue colour had made Lapis a prized stone since antiquity.

Moonstone has a pearly, opalescent lustre caused by layers of feldspar.

Moonstone became very popular in the Art Nouveau period.

Glossary Morganite also known as ‘pink beryl’, is a rose - coloured gem-quality beryl. Beryl is a mineral composed of beryllium aluminium cyclosilicate. Morganite may also be orange/yellowish in colour.

Peridot is one of the few gemstones that occur in only one colour, an olive green.

The shade depends on how much iron is contained in the crystal structure so the colour can vary from greenish-brown to yellow -green.

Prehnite is a strong crystal, resistant to pressures and scratching. It is composed of aluminium, calcium and silicon. It is a soft green colour and has a translucent, pearly lustre.

Reconstituted (stabilised or pressed) turquoise is a reconstructed stone that is a mixture of crushed natural stone with a strong acrylic resin that creates a more affordable alternative to its more costly natural stone.

Rose Quartz gets its soft pink colour from traces of titanium, manganese and iron.

Quartz is one of the most abundant minerals in the earth’s crust and has many colour varieties.

Smoky Quartz is a brownish variety of quartz. It ranges in clarity from complete transparency to a rich brown-grey crystal that is almost opaque . Some can almost appear black. The smoky colour results from free silicon in the quartz from natural irradiation.

Stainless steel is a rust resistant iron-carbon alloy. Due to its hard metal state it cannot be re-sized or engraved on.

Sterling Silver is 92.5% pure silver and 7.5% of metal such as copper, zinc or platinum to make up 100%. Pure silver, which is very soft, is mixed with these other metals to increase its strength, malleability and durability.

Tumbaga is an alloy of 20%zinc and 80%copper and has a golden yellow colour.

Tumbaga is incoporated into some of our products we manufacture in Mexico.

Production Processes Hand made Most of Najo’s Mexican silver is handmade using, for example, metal sheeting and dies where the metal sheet is pressed into a die (concave shape) so that it forms the shape of the die. The shapes are then hand soldered together to form the piece of jewellery. Another hand-made process is ‘drawing’ or forcing silver through a hole so it is extruded as a wire or tube, which can then be used to make rings, bangles, chain etc.

Lost wax casting The lost wax jewellery casting process starts with a master model of the piece to be recreated. A mould is made of the master model which is injected with wax to create a wax replica of the original piece. Inside a flask, the wax replica is surrounded by plaster. The flask is placed into an oven and the wax is completely melted from the mould. A hollow void is left in its place which is then filled with molten metal. Once cooled the piece is cleaned, polished and finished.

Stamping A process used to make light-weight jewellery. Silver sheets are stamped with dies (like cookie cutters) to produce cut-out shapes which are then assembled into jewellery. Light-weight earrings, pendants and charms are often made in this manner.

Electroforming A very complex and labour-intensive process in which silver is electroplated onto a shape, usually made of wax. The shape is submerged into a bath and treated with a solution that forms a thin base-metal layer over the wax. It is then submerged for hours in another solution in order for a very thick silver layer to develop over the base-metal layer. When finished, the shape is warmed so the wax interior melts, leaving the finished piece of silver.

Sometimes, electroformed designs retain a resin base within them to prevent denting of the jewellery.

Oxidation Silver is treated with a solution called “liver of sulphur” to turn it black. The silver piece is then polished so that the black finish remains only in the indentations. It is often used to give jewellery an antique appearance, or to highlight the details of design.

Electroplating of metal is achieved by submerging the jewellery in a solution that has an electric current running through it which causes a thin layer of silver/gold etc to build up on the jewellery.

Plating is used to improve appearance and increase scratch resistance. The thickness of the plating will be determined by the length of time it remains in the plating bath.

Italian and Asian silver is often silver plated to give it a bright, white appearance. Mexican silver is not silver plated because it is hand polished, which also gives it a bright appearance.

Najo gold plated jewellery is usually 14 or 18 karat, and varies between 1 to 2 microns in thickness.

Rhodium Plating gives silver the colour of white gold and is more popular in Europe.

Stone-set jewellery is usually rhodium plated. Rhodium Plating gives silver a dark grey to black finish.

Steel IP plating (or ion plating) on steel is a process that is carried out in a vacuum environment with very low pressure, electricity and heat. Ion plated stainless steel is extremely hard-wearing and corrosion resistant. It can be cared for with gentle use of a soft cloth or washing in warm, soapy water.

Anti-tarnish plating Most Najo jewellery is anti-tarnish plated, which reduces tarnishing and protects gold plating.

Jewellery Care & Repairs It is natural for sterling silver jewellery to tarnish or discolour over time, particularly if the piece is worn regularly. Tarnish is caused by several factors, including: - Exposure to moisture, humidity, sunlight and oxygen.

- The acidity (PH balance) of a person’s skin, which in turn is affected by diet, medication and stress.

- Exposure to perfume, soap, moisturiser, shampoo etc. and cleaning products such as dish washing liquid and bleach.

- Exposure to chlorine.

In-store Jewellery Care Preventing tarnish - Wear cotton gloves or use soft cloths when stocking or re-stocking your display cabinets.

- Each time you or a customer touches or tries on a piece of Najo jewellery it should be lightly wiped to remove any oil transferred from the skin.

- Avoid exposure of the jewellery to bright fluorescent lighting or bright sunlight for prolonged periods.

Customer Jewellery Care Najo advises against the use of commercial silver ‘dip’ solutions as they are unsuitable for cleaning hollow, oxidised, stone-set, pearl or plated jewellery and can cause surface deterioration.

Some care guidelines are: • Plain silver: clean with a silver polishing cloth. For more stubborn tarnishing use a cleaning solution such as Silvo, Brasso, Goddards or Hagerty’s Polishing Foam • Matte silver: do not clean with a silver cloth, but wash in warm soapy water and leave to dry.

Bicarb soda and a soft brush will also clean matte silver.

• Oxidised silver: clean with a silver polishing cloth. Do not use silver dip as this can remove the oxidisation.

• Electroformed silver: treat gently, as it can dent if not resin filled. Clean with a silver polishing cloth, silver polish or foam. Never use silver dip.

• Gold plated silver: wipe gently (do not rub vigorously) with a soft cloth, or wash carefully with warm soapy water.

• Pearls: do not expose to cosmetics or cleaning agents as this may affect the lustre and colour.

Clean with a soft cloth. A pearl cleaner may also be used.

• Stone-set jewellery: wash with warm soapy water.

Returns and Repairs At Najo we strive to make sure our jewellery is of the highest quality. If you find a fault with the jewellery on arrival claims must be made within 10 working days of receipt of delivery. For all Najo sales, we offer a 12 month warranty from time of purchase. Please ensure your customer’s receipt is included when sending your return back to us. Returns will only be accepted for goods incorrectly shipped or faulty, not for change of mind purchase. They must be in their original condition, devoid of store price tags.

Please follow the below instructions to make a claim on a faulty product: • Email lisa@najo.com.au or call +61 2 8123 4076 to obtain a ‘Return Authorisation Number’.

• Please provide us with the product code and details of the fault. If an item is faulty, we will endeavour to replace the item. In the event that a replacement is not available, we will issue a credit against your account.

• Post your return back to Najo head office (PO BOX 3159, REDFERN NSW 2016), clearly stating your ‘Return Authorisation Number’.

• Faulty steel items can be replaced/credited without being returned. A photo of the faulty item must be sent to lisa@najo.com.au for approval.

• Please make sure your return is sent back in a box that protects the jewellery as items sent in envelopes and padded bags often sustain further damage in transit. Unfortunately we cannot credit an item that has been broken in transit and otherwise could have been repaired.
