Dalton was raised in Hoonah, Alaska. He is of Tlingit Navajo Ancestry - born into the T’akdeintaan clan, Raven moiety. He is the child of Chookaneidi. He belongs to the Frog crest as well. He attributes his growth from being raised in Hoonah were he learned about Tlingit design, heritage, culture, and the traditional ways of life of his people. On September 18, 1996, he graduated from The Art Institute of Seattle, majoring in Graphic Design. While attending the institute, computer graphics was also attained. Dalton has a strong passion for teaching those wanting to learn and apply his teachings. He has taught and currently teaching at various sites. Of those, the University of Southeast Alaska, Juneau, and the Voctech Resource and Training Center located also in Juneau, Alaska, Computer Graphics at The Art Institute of Seattle and Shoreline Community College. Anyone can learn to draw formline designs but knowing one’s heritage, culture, and the meaning of each symbol, makes it significant. This significance brings truth to yourself and your people. The truth then educates others of what Tlingit art is and how it works. One can then see the differentiation of the “ Northwest Coast Indian art ” is versus Tlingit art and our traditional ways. By using the computer as a tool, I feel that it’s only with time, Artists will learn and use such technology. Centuries ago my Tlingit ancestors would use templates to draw their designs. This was so the image would be cleanly drawn. In their art, “ Perfection ” was sought out time after time. To me using the computer is just taking the design process the next step as a tool so I can accomplish my “ Perfection ” in my Tlingit designs.
