Mackayishopefulaboutadvancesin basicscienceaddressingspecificimmune systemabnormalitieslinkedtoinflammatoryproblems.“Lupusisverychallenging todiagnoseandtreatbecauseitcanaffect everysysteminthebody,”saysMackay, whoseresearchteamhasfocusedonlupus
fordecades.“Theonlyformsoftreatmenthavebeenveryimmune-suppressive medicationsthatshutdowntheimmune response.Noneofthesemedicationsare specific,soinshuttingdowntheimmuneresponsetotreatlupus,theyinturn interferewiththebody’sabilitytofightoff infectionandcancer.”Researchersarenow honinginonsinglecellsfrombiopsies thatindicatewhichproteinsareabnormal, therebyhelpingdevelopmoreselective therapies,shesays.
