Long Range Planning Committee Report and Recommendation
We Glorify God by Making Disciples of All Nations
A message from Pastor Jason‌
A People of Faith When I came to First Baptist as Pastor nearly 4 years ago, the Lord impressed on my heart a vision for revitalization, renewal, and revival. I was so impressed by the history of FBCA with a long heritage of faithfulness in taking the gospel to Athens and beyond, always willing to look forward with a vision of the future. I think of Psalm 145:4, "One generation shall commend your works to another, and shall declare your mighty acts." From one generation to another, the people of this church have handed down the faith, once for all, delivered to the saints. And now it's our time. It's our time to continue that great heritage of ensuring that this generation and the next will hear and be blessed by the same gospel of our parents and grandparents. That's why I believe this project is so important. It will enable us to continue growing and reaching out for years to come. Is it big? God-sized! Can we do it? Only if the Lord is in it. Will you join with me in praying and seeking His face? Will you open your mind, your eyes, your ears and your heart to the Lord's leadership? The following pages provide snapshots of the journey that the LRPC has been on for over a year. We hope the Lord will speak to you as He has to us. Blessings, Pastor Jason

How will we pay for it … The LRPC recognizes that this project is bigger than what we are capable of accomplishing on our own. Therefore, we need to first answer the question “Is this what God wants us as a church to do?” So, if the Lord is leading His church to undertake this project, then we firmly believe that He will provide. Nothing is impossible for Him. We also believe that we must be faithful stewards of the resources with which God has blessed us. After seeking counsel and conducting our own research, we believe we can pay for this building in 6 years. It will not be easy. It will require participation of all; not equal giving, but equal sacrifice. It should not affect our budget or missions giving. If the church approves the plan, we would conduct a capital fundraising campaign this fall. Experts have told us that we can raise 1.5 to 2 times our annual budget, which would be 1.6 to 2.2 million dollars given over a 3 year period. Because interest rates are so low, we would open a line of credit to finance the project. This would enable us to begin the work in a timely manner, including the initial steps of hiring a fundraising consultant and an architect. At the end of 3 years, depending on how much of our debt is remaining, we would have some options. We could do another capital fundraising campaign to finish the debt. We could finance the remaining balance with a goal to pay it off in 3 years. Depending on the growth of our church budget, we may even be able to absorb the monthly payments into the budget. Either way, the LRPC believes that, with the Lord’s help and with the generosity of His people, we can meet this challenge. Some have suggested that we need to have 50% of the money in hand before we start. It is the LRPC’s belief that doing so would delay the start of the project, discourage giving, and end up costing the church more in the long run. There has scarcely been a better time to build. If the Lord leads us, we need to be diligent to act. Others worry we might be getting in over our heads. While this is a “God-sized” project, it is not beyond the capabilities of our Lord working through His people. We hesitate to share the chart below because we neither want to encourage or discourage generosity. Please don’t try to categorize yourself on this chart until you’ve had time to pray and let the Lord lead you. But, this chart reflects how the giving might look in order to reach 2.2 million dollars or 2x our annual budget.
As stated earlier, the LRPC realizes this project will require a step of bold faith on the part of the church. By taking this step we believe it demonstrates what we are incapable of doing and what only God is capable of doing.
LRPC’s Recommendation Motion LRPC recommends that the church approve proceeding with the expansion project as detailed in the plan overview provided, not to exceed 3.3 million dollars. This project will be under the supervision of the LRPC. A ballot vote on this motion will be taken following both services on Sunday morning, April 21, 2013, with no further discussion.
