Natural horse training, also known as natural horsemanship, is a philosophy of training a horse by utilizing the horse's natural instincts. Body Language A large part of natural horsemanship involves the use of body language. In the wild, horses communicate with each other through body language by positioning their heads, ears, eyes and tails. Training your horse naturally involves using body language to give the horse a cue to act in a certain way. Natural Instincts A horse's behavior consists of acting to certain stimuli, whether by predators, other horses in the herd and their surroundings. These 'stimuli' can also be referred to as pressure. Natural horsemanship uses pressure to make a trainer get a specific reaction from the horse. Once the horse acts appropriately, the pressure is released and it is through this type of conditioning that the horse learns how to respond when given different cues. What is the difference between pressure and force? By training your horse naturally, no force are ever used. By using force means to have a horse do things against it's instincts. Pressure are communicated to the horse through methods they understand and can respond to. Trust is a very crucial part of training your horse naturally and you can earn it by speaking the same language as the horse. By interacting and using body language the horse understands, it will start feeling comfortable with it's trainer and will be open to learning different behaviors. Why should one practice natural horsemanship? The goal ultimately for having a horse, is enjoyment and fun. By training your horse naturally, you are provided with much more fun in a variety of ways. Horses trained this way are much more relaxed and will trust their riders more freely, thus going that extra mile, especially where competitions are concerned. Trainers or riders can also feel more comfortable around their horses as they can interpret their horse's behavior much more easily. Although sometimes unpredictable, horses being trained naturally are much more predictable than those not being trained this way.
