Walking with
Alpine Eyes - by Jesse Haber, MA, RCC Fellow Traveller Counselling
I can’t stop thinking about meditation. Which is weird, because let’s be honest, that kind of feels like it is defeating the purpose. I have been practicing, reading and talking about meditation for months, and I want to tell you why:
can’t seem to let go: that self-critical thought, that wrong done, that feeling of loss or hopeless fury. If that single focused point is the antithesis of a peaceful mind, why not take the approach of broadening our view?
In June of this year, I spent 5 days in the mountains with a wonderful group of people with a few simple goals: Walk, meditate, study, learn, and exist in the moment in unparalleled natural beauty. I was nervous. I was going to be out of cell service, disconnected from my safety net, in the mountains with strangers. Spending that much time with myself seemed like an awful lot of time. Who knows what horrors lay in wait in the corners of my mind? Silence always seems like the place that secret voices hide and there was a distinct part of me that was less than enthusiastic to find out if this was true.
This is where 50-50 seeing can really help us, in any moment, in any space. I encourage you to try it right now; read the next few lines, and then give it a shot.
Low and behold, I survived the trip, and count it as one of the more fortunate and paradigm-shifting experiences of my adult life. What I aim to do is share some of those insights over the next few issues. This month, we will explore some of the basics of the mindful gaze. We will follow that with some mindful walking, and finally, we will dive into thinking, and some methods of exploring thinking and of letting thoughts go. 50-50 Seeing One of the most powerful tools I took coming out of the mountains was what my teacher Michael Stone called 50-50 seeing. It is a method of being present in both the peripheral and the specific at the same time. It is about moving away from our single-minded focus, just enough that to see that there is a wide open expanse all around us. This is a great analogy for mindfulness. To be mindful is to be present, in the moment, with all that we are and all that we are a part of. When many of us are feeling overwhelmed our world becomes narrow, focused on that one burning point that we

1) Allow your eyes to sit on something in front of you, something you can lock your gaze on, and really focus on. This is your overwhelming feeling. 2) Now, notice that there is more to see besides your one focal point, without moving your eyes. Can you find the ability to widen the view but still remain in the same space? Is there a world around your one point, even without looking directly at it? 3) Now, hold these two things to be true: You can both see the point, but also see the point as a part of a larger whole. This is mindfulness. This is placing your overwhelming feeling into the context that everything that seems like it is the most intense thing we can experience is a part of a greater whole. 4) Try this for a few seconds, or a few minutes. When you begin to strain on your one focused point, or lose it all in a blurry indistinct haze try to find that 50-50 balance, that sweet spot that involves the forest and the trees. This is your new mindful gaze practice. It can be done while you walk, work, play, or lay in bed. It is a reminder of the sharpness of now, and the vastness of now. It is placing our most frustrating moments and repetitious thoughts into the wider perspective. Allow this developing practice to remain a practice, shifting your emotional and visual perspectives until you find that sweet 50-50 spot and just sink right in.

chronic Ear Infections - by Dr. Keith Condliffe, ND
Ear infections are usually one of the first ailments to affect infants and children, along with diaper rashes, eczema and fevers. When treated correctly, your child will become stronger through these processes, so that they will not be so easily affected by bugs in their environment. There are two basic types of ear infections – acute and chronic. Acute means there is a fever. Chronic means there is mucous accumulation and possibly pain without a fever. They need to be treated differently from a naturopathic and medical perspective. Chronic ear infections are a sign of something known in natural medicine as ‘dysbiosis.’ This is a catch-all term that describes an imbalance in the normal flora (symbiotic bacteria) lining your child’s mucous membranes – specifically the lining of the ear tubes in the case of chronic ear infections. While diet does affect the outcome of your child’s chronic ear infection, it does not usually correct the underlying ‘dysbiosis.’ Common foods that make an ear infection worse are: sugary snacks, bananas, eggs, milk, yogurt, and wheat. With the exception of sugar, these are normally healthy foods that can stimulate the body to produce more phlegm, which can become stuck in your child’s ear tubes. Sugar is superfood for bacteria, yeasts and other illness-causing organisms. Common foods that may improve an ear infection include: steamed vegetables, soups, fruit juices (without added sugar) and herbal teas. Common remedies that can make your child’s ear infection better include: ear drops (with antimicrobial herbs), specific probiotics, homeopathic remedies and, when absolutely necessary, antibiotics. The overuse of antibiotics may be connected with chronic ear infections. Something as simple as an onion poultice has been known to work wonders for chronic ear infections, as it encourages drainage of the mucous from the ear. Specific strains of probiotics (healthy bacteria) are also important in rebalancing your child’s immune system. The best way for your child’s immune system to become stronger is through the use of medicines specifically balanced for their system and their level of health. When an infant or child’s vitality improves in this way, they can drastically decrease their dependency on medicines and they can stay healthy all by themselves!

Doris Hocevar MA, RN, CC Mindfulness Trainer and Workshop Leader Centre for Healthy Mindspace BRIEF BREATHING PRACTICE
Q: “I’ve been feeling very anxious and stressed out lately. I had a meltdown at work recently over a very minor issue. Are there any suggestions as to how I can calm myself in the moment when I start feeling this way?” I am sorry to hear about your struggles at work. There is a way to work through distress as it occurs in the moment, however, I would like to offer a bit of context regarding anxiety and then I will offer some tools that you can practice on your own. Anxiety is extremely common: one out of every four Canadians suffers from a diagnosable form of anxiety. We know that negative thinking, worrying and obsessive preoccupations influence anxiety and stress significantly. What happens in our thinking mind has a direct causal effect on our body and emotional state. Our minds are very busy and generate up to 65,000 (+/-) automatic thoughts every day and most of those thoughts are generated outside of our awareness, so that means we are not necessarily tuned into our what we are thinking. Automatic thinking is not good or bad it is simply how the mind processes a lot of information and it is different for everyone. Developing awareness of our thoughts, emotions and physical sensations is a powerful way to change how we relate to stress and anxiety. Mindfulness Based Interventions (MBI’s) help us develop self-awareness so that we can change how we relate to anxiety. Research in neuroscience is showing how effective MBI’s are in minimizing the impact of stress and anxiety. MBI’s offer a different way of approaching our anxiety through the cultivation of self-awareness, curiosity and kindness, also invites us to be accepting. I do not want to suggest that using MBI’s will make anxiety go away because we are dealing with complex issues that require a multifaceted approach; rather MBI’s offer a different way of relating to distress and resistance in the moment. The goal of MBI’s is not to “fix” what we think is wrong. Our goal is to remain open, curious and to develop a sense of acceptance of things just as they are. With daily mindfulness practice we can develop distress tolerance and cultivate emotional regulation skills that enhance overall resilience. Moreover with a committed daily mindfulness practice we experience a sense of calm and ease and we learn to trust our selves and set healthy boundaries. Here are two MBI practices that help to alleviate anxiety and stimulate the relaxation response.
1) Stop what you are doing. Sit comfortably. Allow your feet to be flat on floor, rest your hands on your knees and allow your back to be straight. 2) Bring attention to your breathing. Take a shallow breath in through your nose and breath out through your mouth. 3) Breathe-in slightly deeper into the belly. Now breathe-out and release. 4) Breathe-in deeply into the belly. Breathe-out with force, allowing all of the air to leave the belly and the chest. 5) Breathe-in to full capacity. Breathe-out releasing while exhal ing. Allow the lungs to empty and the belly to soften. 6) Repeat this breathing practice ten times while maintaining a steady rhythm of breath cycles. Practice up to three times a day, every day for two weeks. BRIEF BODY SCAN PRACTICE “First we begin the brief body scan practice by bringing attention to our breath. Simply notice the sensations of the in-breath and out-breath. Stay with the breath for as long as you need to. When you’re ready shift your attention to the soles of your feet… opening your mind to whatever sensations are felt on the soles of your feet and simply notice the sensations. Perhaps you’re noticing the pressure of the soles of your feet as the weight of your legs rests on them. Perhaps you’re noticing the temperature of your feet… warm or cool. Just notice. There is no need to judge whatever thoughts are arising. If your attention wanders bring kind attention back to the practice of noticing the sensations of the feet. Next shift attention to ankles, lower limbs and knees. Gradually scan the entire body noticing sensations of discomfort and areas where you sense an absence of physical sensation. There is no need to go searching for areas of discomfort, simply allow your attention to scan the body from the soles of the feet to the top of the head, taking as much time as possible and being open to what is here.” Practice at a set time each day for two weeks. Notice what changes over time. MBI’s are extremely effective in helping us minimize the effects of anxiety and when we practice every day lasting change occurs. The trick is to dedicate short bursts of time each day to practicing. If you miss a day don’t worry; mindfulness is the most forgiving practice I know. Simply begin again. I hope this information will support you in working through your challenges with stress and anxiety. Try to be patient and kind with your self - you are doing the best that you can. discoverwellnessbc.ca

pulled pork ‘N’ chard
with
Simple Slaw 6-10 Swiss Chard Leaves - any colour - the bigger the better. 1 Pork Roast picnic or shoulder (able to fit in slow cooker) 1 medium onion Dry Rub: 1 tbs onion pow 1 tbs of garlic pow 1 tbs of cumin ½ tbs of cinnamon ¼ tsp of salt ¼ tsp of pepper Sauce to simmer: 1 cup of White Vinegar ½ cup of apple cider vinegar ½ cup of red wine vinegar 1.5 tbs of Bragg’s Soy Sauce 1 tbs of Dijon Mustard 2 tbs of maple Syrup 2 tbs of honey 1 tbs of Siracha (optional) ¼ tsp of salt 1. Rub ah Dub your roast with the spices noted. You can do this the night before so it’s ready for the Crocker in the morning 2. Combine everything into your sauce pan for the sauce. You can also do this the night before as well. The trick with this stuff is SIMMER AND REDUCE. Min of 35 min. You don’t want it boiling and too thick, just thicker. 3. Crocker that baby on low for 10 hrs. On the 8th or 9th hour come home and turn the lid half way so lots of the steam can escape and reduce within the crock pot. 4. Pull Your roast out and shred the meat, and place back into the sauce and leave on warm. 5. Wash up 6-10 Swiss Chard Leaves (you can remove the stem part as it’s a bit chewy), and serve topping with your Simple Slaw Topper.

Probiotics: Good for More than Our Guts - by Dr. Eberding, ND Most people are aware of the digestive benefits of probiotics, but new research suggests that probiotics, when administered in adequate amounts, offer other health benefits. They may also stimulate the immune system during times of stress, improve mood and shorten the duration of flu symptoms. Because of this, more and more health care practitioners are beginning to recommend regular use of probiotics. They are often touted as a staple supplement due to their ability to balance the microbiome (the population of trillions of bacteria within our bodies). One of the best ways to positively influence declining immune health attributed to stress is with the use of probiotics. Stress has a significant influence on the amount of “good bugs” there are in our system relative to the number of “bad bugs.” In chronically-stressed individuals, bad bacteria (like Enterobacteria and E. coli) tend to increase in number, while good bacteria like Bifidobacteria and Lactobacilli, decrease. Probiotics can help restore the Bifidobacteria and Lactobacilli populations, thus having a positive effect on the immune cells within the gut and the immune system as a whole. Another way probiotics positively influence our health is through their impact on our mood. There is now evidence that shows gut health to be inextricably linked to brain health. This is called the gut-brain axis and it encompasses bidirectional communication between the gut microbiome and the brain. Altered microbiota, for example, has been linked to depression, anxiety and autism spectrum disorder. The good news is that when probiotics are introduced to the system, they are able to modulate the severity of these mood disorders. Probiotics have also been shown to increase brain activity and improve mood even in healthy individuals. Trials have also been conducted that assess the effectiveness and safety of probiotics when used to prevent and modulate acute upper respiratory tract infections. At this time, the research is positive; the use of probiotics for respiratory infections shows beneficial results. Probiotics not only reduce the incidence of an acute infection, but also the duration and severity of an acute upper respiratory tract infection. As more research becomes available, the consensus is that the gut microbiome appears to have an influence on nearly all systems and levels of the human body. Supplementing with probiotics is a one way to replenish, rebuild and maintain the gut microbiota. Talk to your naturopathic physician about the specific strains and dosing that would work for your needs.
Dr. Andrew Eberding, ND, MSc is a Naturopathic Physician at Polo Health and Longevity Centre in New Westminister, BC and practices out of Green Tree Health & Wellness in Quesnel, BC.

How Acupuncture & Chinese Medicine can help with Endometriosis - by Dr. Spence Pentland Yinstill Reproductive Wellness
Endometriosis is a hormonal and immune system disease in which cells similar to the endometrium or uterine lining, grow outside the uterine cavity, often on the peritoneum or surrounding abdominal organs. Common symptoms include pain and infertility, with pain often worse during menstruation and often with excess clotting. It may also be present around ovulation and during sex (dysparerunia). The pain is so bad in some cases that women will miss work and social engagements as they manage their discomfort using a variety of strategies, including pain medication, heat, rest, or other remedies. Chinese medicine defines menstrual pain, heavy clotting and bleeding (common symptoms of endometriosis) as Qi and Blood stasis. In general women with endometriosis can always be seen with blood stasis (as seen in the endometrial lesions and inflammation caused by an autoimmune reaction) which is also combined with other patterns such as Kidney deficiency or Spleen deficiency. Bleeding can also be caused by excess Heat or Damp-Heat in the lower abdomen, as too much heat quickens the blood causing it to spill out. Spleen deficiency can also cause excess bleeding; when weak, the Spleen fails to hold the blood resulting in excess bleeding. In clinic it is often a combination of several patterns that presents, forcing a multi-pronged approach to treatment. How can acupuncture and Chinese medicine help? 1) Acupuncture and TCM can be very effective at addressing symptoms associated with endometriosis. 2) Our primary goal is to reduce pain with secondary goals being to improve fertility, balance hormone levels and reduce inflammation surrounding the ovaries and uterus. In some cases symptoms are worse around ovulation and increase until menstruation, warranting more treatments. 3) Chinese herbal medicine can help to reduce heavy bleeding and regulate menstrual flow.

4) Depending on the situation, acupuncture and Chinese medicine can help to resolve Blood Stasis, clear Heat or nourish the Spleen thereby reducing bleeding and minimizing pain. Acupressure for at home Application: Acupressure is a useful and accessible way to treat yourself at home or on the go. Apply firm pressure on the point with your middle finger or thumbs, at a 90 degree angle from the surface of the skin for about 3 minutes, 3 or 4 times a day on both sides. If you find that your fingers are getting weak or sore, you can substitute a golf ball, pencil eraser or other appropriate object. Spleen 8 - SP8 - DiJi - “Earth Pivot Location: https://theory.yinyanghouse.com/acupuncturepoints/sp8 This point is commonly used for acute period pain and irregular menstruation and can be massaged both as a preventative measure and to relieve immediate pain. Take home tips: 1) Visceral massage by a properly trained therapist can help to heal and break up possible adhesions. 2) Use acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine for menstrual pain management and to reduce inflammation. 3) Focus on diet to improve liver health, to properly convert and eliminate proliferative estrogen from the system. Include cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, collards, cauliflower, kale and turnips. 4) Avoid toxins and inflammation with a reduction in beef, alcohol, sugar and caffeine, and complete elimination of dairy. 5) Castor oil packs administered daily in the evening before bed.

4. Apply Self Regulation and Accept Feedback – “The sins of the fathers are visited on the children of the seventh generation” We need to discourage inappropriate activity to ensure that systems can continue to function well. Negative feedback is often slow to emerge. 5. Use and Value Renewable Resources and Services – “Let nature take its course” Make the best use of nature’s abundance to reduce our consumptive behavior and dependence on non-renewable resources. 6. Produce No Waste – “Waste not, want not” By valuing and making use of all the resources that are available to us, nothing goes to waste. 7. Design From Patterns to Details – “Can’t see the forest for the trees” By stepping back, we can observe patterns in nature and society. These can form the backbone of our designs, with the details filled in as we go.
A Glimpse into the World of Permaculture Throughout this past year I have become fascinated by the concepts of Permaculture. The permaculture principles are most commonly applied to gardening and my family finds my interest in this subject very entertaining since my thumbs tend to be more black than green. Many a carrot has failed to live up to its potential under my care, something I am not sure even a lifetime of studying permaculture will rectify despite my best efforts. Where I feel permaculture really gets interesting though, is when we apply the Design Principles to other kinds of systems including our communities, our businesses and our personal lives. The Design Principles are truths that many of our cultures have carried with us for generations in proverbs, teachings, legend and story. Permaculture and the application of its principles helps us access this collective knowledge from the past in a way that transcends culture, religion and social systems. When we actively apply these principles to our lives, businesses and social structures, we are then able to create systems that are sustainable and life-supporting for all. At the heart of Permaculture is three ethics: care for the earth, care for people, and fair share. These ethics form the foundation for the Permaculture Principles (outlined below). 12 Permaculture Principles (as described by David Holmgren, the co-founder of the Permaculture movement): 1. Observe and Interact – “Beauty is in the mind of the beholder” By taking the time to engage with nature we can design solutions that suit our particular situation. 2. Catch and Store Energy – “Make hay while the sun shines” By developing systems that collect resources when they are abundant, we can use them in times of need. 3. Obtain a yield – “You can’t work on an empty stomach” Ensure that you are getting truly useful rewards as part of the working you are doing.
8. Integrate Rather Than Segregate – “Many hands make light work” By putting the right things in the right place, relationships develop between those things and they work together to support each other. 9. Use Small and Slow Solutions – “The bigger they are, the harder they fall” Small and slow systems are easier to maintain than big ones, making better use of local resources and produce more sustainable outcomes. 10. Use and Value Diversity – “Don’t put all your eggs in one basket” Diversity reduces vulnerability to a variety of threats and takes advantage of the unique nature of the environment in which it resides. 11. Use Edges and Value the Marginal – “Don’t think you are on the right track just because it’s a well-beaten path” The interface between things is where the most interesting events take place. These are often the most valuable, diverse and productive elements in the system. 12. Creatively Use and Respond to Change – “Vision is not seeing things as they are but as they will be” We can have a positive impact on inevitable change by carefully observing and then intervening at the right time. I have really enjoyed connecting these principles to my work and everyday life as they have provided natural and common sense solutions to physical and interpersonal puzzles. It is my hope that you enjoy working with these principles as much as I have and that you find solutions that support and guide you in your everyday life.
