With prostate cancer being the second m ost common cancer in men worldwide, it’s definitely a topic worth talking about! If you haven’t heard of Movember, you might be wondering why you see so many men sporting moustaches in the month of November. In 2003, in the g reat city of Melbourne, Australia, two friends (Travis Garone a nd Luke Slattery) visit over a beer when the unfashionable, f orgotten m oustache becomes the cornerstone of conversation. H ere is where the Movember movement begins. They corralled 3 0 mates to grow a hairy upper lip with little foreshadowing of the m ajor impact their venture would have for men across the world. The following year they started the Movember Foundation in A ustralia and all funds raised were donated to the P rostate Cancer Foundation of Australia (PCFA). Picking up m omentum, by 2006 almost $9.5 m illion was raised in Australia and New Zealand. By 2007 over $28 million was raised with the USA, Canada, UK, and Spain on board. Each raising money for their country’s p rostate cancer foundation. With new countries coming on board each year and awareness spreading on a global level, Movember has raised $677 million since 2003 and estimates growth. The Movember Foundation focuses on 2015 will see new

Movember Awareness four main areas of men’s health: Prostate Cancer, Testicular Cancer, Poor Mental Health, and Physical Inactivity. How does one participate? Register on the Movember Foundation website www.ca.movember.com to start your personal or group profile and fundraising page. Begin growing your unique moustache and raise funds that will go directly to Prostate Cancer Canada. Ladies, you can participate too! The 30-‐day MOVE challenge is for those who opt out of a hairy upper lip. Get your body in motion every day for 30 days whether you walk, cycle, dance, or play a game of tag with the kids. There is also a donation option on the website. With chronic disease prevailing, and our western medicine approach mainly symptom and disease-‐focused, we must branch out and be open to complimentary m eans of healing and prevention including, nutrition, movement, and m ental and emotional self-‐care. After all, these key areas are what greatly influence are gene expression and can send us down a pathway of chronic disease and illness or build a strong foundation for optimal health. >>

Prostate  Role  &  Physiology  â€“  Natural  Medicines  Database  The  prostate  is  part  of  a  man's  reproductive  system,  and  is  located  in  front  of  the  rectum  and  under  the  bladder.  It  surrounds  the  urethra,  the  tube  through  which  urine  flows.  A  healthy  prostate  is  about  the  size  of  a  walnut.  The  prostate  makes  part  of  the  seminal  fluid.  During  ejaculation,  seminal  fluid  helps  carry  sperm  out  of  the  man's  body  as  part  of  semen.  Male  hormones  (androgens)  make  the  prostate  grow.  The  testicles  are  the  main  source  of  male  hormones,  including  testosterone.  The  adrenal  gland,  located  above  the  kidneys,  also  makes  testosterone,  but  in  small  amounts.  If  the  prostate  grows  too  large,  it  squeezes  the  urethra.  This  may  slow  or  stop  the  flow  of  urine  from  the  bladder  to  the  penis.   Possible  Warning  Signs  of  Prostate  Cancer  Prostate  cancer  is  the  uncontrollable  growth  of  cells  in  the  prostate  gland.   All  men  do  not  experience  the  following  warning  signs  when  cancer  is  detected  early  enough.   If  you  experience  the  following  warning  signs  it  is  important  to  visit  your  physician:  â€˘ A  need  to  urinate  frequently,  especially  at  night  â€˘ Difficulty  starting  urination  or  holding  back  urine  â€˘ Weak  or  interrupted  flow  of  urine  â€˘ Blood  in  urine  and  /  or  semen  â€˘ Painful  or  burning  urination  â€˘ Ongoing  pain  in  lower  back,  pelvis  or  upper  thighs  â€˘ Prostate  specific  antigens  (PSA)  levels  can  be  tested  and  can  become  elevated  long  before  a  hard,  enlarged  prostate  is  felt  on  rectal  examination   â€˘ Benign  Prostate  Hypertrophy  (BPH)  can  create  high  PSA  levels,  however  there  is  no  statistical  association  between  BPH  and  prostate  cancer  â€˘ Difficulty  having  an  erection  â€˘ Painful  ejaculation   Are  You  at  Risk  of  Prostate  Cancer?  â€˘ Men  over  the  age  of  50  have  a  higher  risk  of  developing  prostate  cancer  and  should  go  through  routine  checkups.  â€˘ Men  with  immediate  family  members  (father  or  brother)  that  have  been  diagnosed  are  at  higher  risk  due  to  inherited  genetic  factors.  â€˘ Obesity  and  a  high-â€?fat  diet  may  pose  an  increased  risk.   It  is  theorized  that  fat  increases  inflammation  and  the  production  of  testosterone,  which  may  promote  the  development  of  prostate  cancer  cells.   Obese  m en  have  more  than  2.5  times  the  risk  of  dying  from  prostate  cancer  than  those  of  normal  weight  at  the  time  of  diagnosis.  â€˘ Testosterone  stimulates  the  growth  of  the  prostate  gland.   Those  with  high  levels  from  testosterone  (steroid)  therapy  and  hypogonadism  may  be  m ore  at  risk.     Integrative  Therapies  Your  oncologist  or  family  physician  will  discuss  your  options  when  it  comes  to  standard  medical  treatments.   According  to  the  Natural  Medicines  database,  the  following  integrative  therapies  have  shown  good  scientific  evidence  to  improve  quality  of  life  for  those  diagnosed  with  prostate  cancer.   They  are  not  m eant  to  be  used  as  a  sole  treatment  for  cancer  or  any  chronic  illness  and  should  be  guided  by  a  professional.   >>  Â

Me like cookie.....nom nom....who doesn't? I love these ones especially because of the ingredients. I have never claimed to be a baker (many epic fails have proven this “non claim”) so it usually takes m e a month or two to come up with another sweet tooth recipe. If it's loaded with good ingredients, low in sugar and I can have 2 or 3 with out feeling like crap....me likey! I think my favourite part of these guys, is the added cooked quinoa. A little extra “complete” protein, m inimal sugar, good fibre, and healthy fats.......perfecto monster cookie that won't go straight to my butt cheeks!

Loaded Quinoa Cookies 3/4 cup of quinoa flour (just make it in your blender with dry quinoa) 1 cup of rolled oats 3/4 cup of shredded unsweetened coconut 1/2 cup of pumpkin seeds 1/4 cup milled flax seed 1 cup of cooked and cooled quinoa 1/2 cup of Dark chocolate chips or raisins 1/2 tsp. of salt 1/2 tsp. of baking powder 1/2 tsp. of baking soda 1 tsp. of cinnamon 1/2 cup of palm sugar (coconut sugar) 2 eggs 1 tbsp. of vanilla 1/2 cup of coconut oil 1/3 cup of 0% plain Greek yoghurt

1. preheat oven to 375 degrees 2. mix all of your dry ingredients together except your sugar 3. melt coconut oil and add to sugar, vanilla, eggs and yoghurt 4. mix together with the dry ingredients 5. drop onto your cookie sheet with parchment paper and flatten into the shape that you want.

These babies won't rise much, and will take what ever shape you give them :) This is a hearty cookie and goes well with a cup of tea!

Aromatherapy Basics Aromatherapy is the use of natural oils extracted from roots, to leaves, bark, flowers, stems, and other parts of a plant promote and enhance psychological and physical well-‐being.

These plant oils are referred to as “essential” oils. They can be inhaled by use of a diffuser or hot pot, applied topically and absorbed through the skin to enter the blood stream, and if suitable for internal use, ingested. Essential oils are not the same as perfume or fragrance oils as they are the true essence of plants, not artificially made or contain artificial substances. Due to the therapeutic properties of essential oils, they should be used with care. Each essential oil has its own healing properties. Commonly known uses are for improving m ood, sleep, cognitive function and focus, digestion, pain relief and promoting relaxation.

Common oils and uses: Memory Enhancer Basil, Cypress, Peppermint, Rosemary, Lemon

Anxiety Lavender, Patchouli, Rose, Sandalwood, Bergamot, Chamomile, Cedarwood, Frankincense, Jasmine

Fatigue Basil, Ginger, Grapefruit, Lemon, Sandalwood, Peppermint, Clary Sage, Frankincense, Rosemary, Bergamot, Patchouli

Aphrodisiac Jasmine, Ylang Ylang, Vanilla, Patchouli, Clary Sage, Sandalwood, Rose

When purchasing essential oils, quality is of most importance. Look for pure, therapeutic-‐grade essential oils and follow label warnings and instructions. If using topically, always dilute with a carrier or base oil such as coconut oil, jojoba oil, or almond oil. Consuming essential oils internally is not safe unless the label states it can be safely used as a dietary supplement and provides specific instruction. As with any health supplement or remedy, discontinue use if you experience severe skin, stomach, esophageal and respiratory irritation or discomfort of any kind. When using essential oils on children, they m ust be heavily diluted. It is not recommended to use oils on children under 2 years of age. Working with a professional, experienced in aromatherapy, can help you feel comfortable and safe introducing essential oils into your daily routine.

PLANTAR FASCIITIS My name is Lori Loeppky and I am a Registered Massage Therapist. I have been practicing Massage Therapy for four years and run my business out of the Holistic Health Care Clinic on Front Street. My goal with this column will be to educate the public on common conditions seen in my every day practice and to consider m assage therapy as an effective alternate route to treat these conditions.

First off, because I am going to be talking about fascia, it is important that everyone knows exactly what fascia is. Fascia is a very strong but mobile continuous sheet of connective tissue that envelopes the entire body giving it its shape. It surrounds every muscle, m uscle group, organ and bone and holds everything in its place. In the foot, the plantar fascia starts at the heel and attaches in the forefoot. This is a very painful condition (most common in athletes) that is caused by m icro tearing of the fascia at the heel due to overuse, a major or rapid adjustment in training, increase in body weight (including pregnancy), poor biomechanics, tight calve muscles and improper footwear. It can also be caused by foot arches that are too high (pes cavus) or too low (pes planus).

This condition can be seen in just one or both feet and has a slow onset with no history of injury to the area. A fter longstanding, repeated stress on the fascia, it is unable to repair itself and partially tears. It starts as an acute condition and then can become chronic causing adhesions, fibrosing and thickening of the plantar fascia and recovery can be slow because of its poor blood supply. Most people experience very local pain at the inside of the heel or arch. The pain is most intense when taking the first few steps after non-‐weight bearing for a period of time, or climbing stairs and is usually relieved by rest. There may be swelling and numbness present and it may be accompanied by other conditions such as tendonitis or bone spurs.

Some steps a person can take to decrease the symptoms of plantar fasciitis are: Rest, ice and elevation before and after activity, rest from the aggravating activity with a gradual return starting with non-‐weight bearing exercise, stretching, strengthening the intrinsic m uscles of the foot and shoes with adequate support and flexibility (possibly orthotics).

Overall, massage therapy can be hugely beneficial in treating plantar fasciitis and is a great alternate therapy to consider with any soft tissue condition or injury.

ATTENTION: MEN OVER 40 Better Prostate Health…Naturally!

Men over forty not only face declining production of testosterone, they are also prone to increased activity of the enzyme 5-alphareductase. This enzyme transforms testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT), the menacing hormone responsible for Benign Prostate Hyperplasia (BPH) and its many troublesome symptoms. The early symptoms of BPH are gradual and painless. In fact, a few of the most common symptoms of an enlarged prostate are frequent nighttime urination (nocturia) and delayed or weak urine stream, which are accepted by most men as a normal part of the aging process. Unfortunately there is nothing normal about having your sleep disrupted once or twice per evening. There are two classes of synthetic drugs for BPH. One is a form of anti-hypertensive that acts as a muscle relaxant, which does nothing to reduce the size of the prostate. The other class of drugs exerts a hormonal effect, yet can take several months to show results. These prescription drugs have a laundry list of side effects that include nausea, back pain, and impotence among the reported side effects. There are however many natural, therapeutic nutrients with a track record for side effect-free relief of BPH. Saw palmetto extract contains fatty acids that interfere with the enzyme that converts testosterone to harmful DHT. Rye flower pollen extract delivers a mosaic of vitamins, carotenoids, minerals, amino acids, enzymes, and fatty acids that work to inhibit prostate enlargement and foster good general prostate health. Naturally-sourced free plant sterols help with symptoms of BPH by improving urine flow and retention, and prostate function. Pygeum extract acts as an inhibitor of abnormal growth of the prostate; it also improves bladder contraction to improve drainage. Stinging nettle works synergistically with saw palmetto to inhibit enzyme activity responsible for the creation of DHT. Extracts of lycopene have also been shown to inhibit inflammation of the prostate gland. Selenium and zinc are among the minerals that contribute to prostate wellbeing. Borage and pumpkin seed oils are also excellent nutrients for a healthy prostate gland and the entire urinary tract. You do not have to purchase all these ingredients individually. These are among the eighteen nutrients in a specialized formula: Prostate Perform by New Roots Herbal. This broad-spectrum formula addresses virtually every aspect of urogenital health with a therapeutic focus on BPH. Prostate Perform is an all-natural and side effect-free way to achieve peak performance for your prostate gland. Most men experience symptomatic relief from BPH within seven to ten days when taking Prostate Perform. For men taking pharmaceutical drugs to manage BPH, Prostate Perform also merits consideration for adjunctive use with both classes of prescription medication. Prostate Perform has earned a loyal following of thousands of Canadian men for side effect-free, safe, and effective long-term use over the past decade. It’s the natural selection for a condition that doesn’t have to compromise your lifestyle. Ask our knowledgeable product consultants about how Prostate Perform can assist you or someone you know. It could change your life within 7 to 10 days!

Buying Hearing Aids: It’s A Journey!

By Shelley A. Corbett, MA, RAud, RHIP The decision to get your hearing evaluated and purchase hearing aids is a large one with a significant impact on your communication for the next several years. What is at stake is your ability to connect and maintain relationships with the people important to you like family, friends, and co-‐workers. When you purchase and are first fit with hearing instruments, you are only beginning a journey of adjustment and learning that will improve over the months to give you optimum communication. This requires a good working relationship with your Audiologist or Hearing Instrument Practitioner as you learn to hear and interpret all the sounds you've been missing over the years as your hearing loss developed. This level of hearing health care cannot be provided over the internet or at a long distance where contact with your provider is limited. It does not make good sense to invest in hearing instruments, but not in the process by which you will benefit the most from them. It is best to find an easily accessible professional with whom you are comfortable, and in whom you have confidence at the beginning of your journey to better hearing. You should also ask if your hearing aids can be serviced elsewhere should you need assistance while away from home. Some hearing aids come "locked" so that they may only be serviced where you purchased them, leaving you in a pinch if you run into trouble away from home.

All kinds of technology...how to choose! When deciding whether or not to purchase hearing instruments, or which ones to purchase, a few factors come to the surface. I am often asked for a recommendation, and the answer to that question is really determined by your needs. A s a rule of thumb, the most technologically advanced hearing instruments will give you the best overall approximation to normal hearing available on the market today. A s you would expect however, because of the research and development costs to design a hearing instrument capable of such advanced sound processing, the cost on premium hearing instruments is higher than on less advanced technology. The best solution, then, is one which gives you the most advanced technology that fits within your budget. Sometimes people consider only the most common situations they are in and decide that basic technology should work just fine for those contexts...and that is often true. The difficulty comes when you are in more difficult contexts or are attending significant family events such as Christmas celebrations, weddings, or graduations, when the listening environment is more challenging. Because you are working with only basic technology, you realize that your hearing aids are not up to the task. As a result, I recommend that you not only consider your

common everyday listening environments, but how important it is for you to hear in those more difficult situations that you encounter less frequently. Many hearing instruments today are Bluetooth compatible and can be wirelessly linked to your cell phone, land line phone, MP3, iPod, TV, or other electronic communication devices. Ask your provider what the options are if you are interested. The great benefit of this is that you hear the incoming voice or other sounds in both ears through the corrective circuitry of your hearing instruments. For people who struggle with telephone or cell phone use, this makes a real difference because it takes advantage of the body's natural design where your two ears work together to make listening easier. What about the style? Hearing aids also come in quite a variety of sizes, from those tucked deep inside your ears and not really visible, to larger hearing instruments worn behind your ears. Generally unless your hearing loss is quite serious, smaller, m ore discreet instruments will meet most people's needs. So unless your audiologist or hearing instrument practitioner tells you that you need to go with a larger m odel, the choice of size and style is a matter of personal preference. The cost of hearing aids is related to the technology we put in your instruments, not the shape or size of the instrument, so feel free to choose an option giving you a look you are comfortable with. Some even come in fun colours if you have a flare for fashion! What about costs? Another issue for consumers to understand is what is included in the price of your new hearing aids. In m any places, the hearing aid you are buying is seen as a product to be sold. This is more typical of retail outlet contexts. If the product you purchased needs servicing or adjustments, or you need support in learning to optimize your benefit from your purchase, you pay for these services, if they are available. In m any other hearing clinics, including the one where I work, you are buying a treatment package for your hearing loss. That package includes a diagnostic assessment of your hearing and/or tinnitus, and considers any medical issues that may be a factor in your hearing loss. It also includes your hearing instruments, their fitting, and their fine-‐ tuning to your specific listening needs and preferences over a period of several months as you adjust and learn how to use the new sounds available to you. If you have questions or need extra help, you have access to your hearing health professional so you don't have to worry about extra costs piling up. Your package also includes regular in-‐office maintenance or minor repairs on your hearing aids, periodic re-‐evaluation of your hearing loss and re-‐ programming of your hearing aids as necessary for as long as you wear the hearing aids (typically 5-‐7 years). You also receive a 60-‐day money-‐back guarantee, a 3-‐year warranty, and a 2-‐year loss and damage policy. So really you are investing in the initial cost of hearing aids as well as the training and service necessary to ensure that you receive the m ost benefit possible from your investment for a period of 5 to 7 years. Because of the variation in how things are packaged, it is important for you to ask questions so that you have an understanding of what is and is not included in what you pay.

For  those  who  have  considered  buying  hearing  aids  online,  that  option  is  full  of  expensive  pitfalls.  The  most  obvious  one  is  that  any  hearing  aids  you  order  online  don't  come  programmed  and  fine-â€? tuned  to  your  specific  hearing  loss,  needs,  and  listening  preferences,  and  are  really  sold  as  a  product  which  it  is  up  to  you   to  figure  out  how  to  use.  Second,  I  have  seen  hearing  instruments  that  were  paid  for  by  a  third  party  such  as  WorkSafeBC  or  by  a  First  Nations  agency  sold  online  with  or  without  the  consent  of  the  individual  they  were  originally  billed  for.  Getting  caught  with  "hot"  hearing  aids  leaves  you  in  difficult  place.  In  Canada,  selling  hearing  aids  online  is  illegal.  When  making  the  decision  to  get  your  hearing  difficulties  diagnosed  and  treated,  go  to  your  appointment  prepared  to  ask  questions.  Most  professionals  are  happy  to  help  you  understand  the  process  of  learning  to  hear  with  the  help  of  hearing  instruments  and  to  answer  any  questions  you  may  have.   Shelley  A.  Corbett  is  a  Registered  Audiologist  at  Quesnel  Hearing  Centre.  quesnelaudiology.ca  Â

including maintaining healthy cells, vision and joint health, transporting fat-soluble vitamins, hormone production, and helping our cells communicate and nerves send messages. Eating good fats from sources such as avocado, coconut, raw nuts and seeds, olive oil, grass-fed butter, ghee, and animal products can actually help you lose weight and reduce inflammation. Inflammation can cause insulin resistance, which can lead to weight gain. Inflammation is caused by hydrogenated and partially hydrogenated fats found in most packaged foods, fast food, and junk food, therefore should be avoided. Healthy fats also help satiate you, reducing cravings and overeating. Although healthy fats are necessary, there is still such as thing as eating too many! Aim for 25-35% of your caloric intake to consist of a variety of healthy fats. The majority of your fat intake should be from monosaturated fats (avocado, olive oil, and nuts), approx. 1% omega-3 fats (wild salmon or flax seed), 5-10% omega-6 fats (pumpkin, sunflower, borage, evening primrose) and less than 10% saturated fats (animal products, butter, coconut oil). The most important focus should be enjoying fresh, whole foods! Ask your nutrition questions anonymously at www.spiralhealth.ca

Todayʼs sedentary lifestyles combined with fast-food diets can lead to clogged arteries in people as young as 18. Itʼs a frightening thought, but an active lifestyle and healthy eating can help prevent or undo the damage. Heart disease has no single cause and is best addressed from a number of angles. Provascin is a comprehensive supplement that has been carefully formulated to assist the heart health needs of all adults, male or female, young and old.

Whatʼs in it? COENZYME Q10 Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) is a powerful antioxidant that helps to maintain and support cardiovascular health by protecting the cellsʼ energy factories—the mitochondria. CoQ10 levels steadily rise after birth, peaking at about 20 years of age. After this, they steadily decline. CoQ10 supplementation also increases the heartʼs squeezing action (contractility), enabling the heart to pump blood more efficiently. CoQ10 is recommended by medical authorities for people taking statin drugs, since statins interfere with CoQ10 production, which increases the potential for heart damage. The inclusion of CoQ10 in this formula plays both a preventive and therapeutic role.

L-CARNITINE The amino acid L-carnitine promotes energy production within the cells by transporting fatty acids into the mitochondria. This is particularly helpful within the muscle of the heart, where the mitochondria are dense. The Mayo Clinic reviewed 13 studies from 1973 to 2012, and determined that L-carnitine has the following benefits: Compared with placebo or control, L-carnitine is associated with a 27% reduction in all-cause mortality, a 65% reduction in ventricular arrhythmias, and a 40% reduction in anginal symptoms in patients experiencing a heart attack.

ALPHA KETOGLUTARIC ACID Although itʼs a mouthful to pronounce, its positive effects on the heart are remarkable. Naturally produced in the body, alpha-ketoglutaric acid also plays a key role in the cellsʼ production of energy. In addition, it actively scavenges free ammonia in the blood, decreasing its damag- ing effects on the heart, blood vessels, brain, kidneys and other tissues. (Free ammonia levels in the blood increase following physical stress, overtraining, trauma and heart attacks.)

BETAINE Homocysteine is an amino acid present in blood plasma. Elevated homocysteine levels in the blood can cause damage to the cells lining the arteries. This leads to inflammation within the blood vessels, in turn leading to atherosclerosis. Betaine neutralizes free homocysteine in the blood, decreasing blood vessel damage.

CHAGA This fungus is an exceptionally powerful antioxidant with a long history of supporting the heart. Chaga helps normalize cholesterol ratios and decreases stress hormones derived from cholesterol. (Stress hormones lead to damage and inflammation within the arteries, and elevate triglyceride levels.)

ALPHA LIPOIC ACID A powerful antioxidant that is both fat and water soluble, alpha lipoic acid helps regulate blood sugar. This is important as elevated blood glucose causes glycation to take place. Glycation is the bonding of a sugar with a protein. Inside the heart and arteries, glycation causes cross-linking of proteins, which can cause stiffening and substantial damage.

NUTRICOL Our proprietary blend of green tea (EGCg) and grapeseed extract, Nutricol is a broad-spectrum antioxidant that inhibits the inflammatory process. In doing so, it further protects the blood vessels and heart.
