Critical Analysis
ABOUT ME Hailing from the small town of Irinjalakuda in Thrissur, Kerala, my exposure to architecture has been limited to old temples, churches, and mansions along the road. Even the number of days I spent in "the gulf" was in a relatively lesser modernized Muscat. It was only after being admitted into B. Arch. that I was exposed to the vast world of architecture, its philosophies, and concepts. I believe it could be due to this late introduction that I find myself still on the fence about many debates in the architecture community. I am still in the process of figuring this world out. I do read a bit and write too. I'm keenly interested in what happens around me, and that is not limited to just architecture. I hope to keep striving to realize how I fit into the broader picture and how my contributions can influence the world around me.

It’s an unusually dark morning. Neha snuggled deeper into her bed, trying to hold on to the final bits of a dream already fading into the murky depths of oblivion. For a split second, the entire room is illuminated by a blinding light penetrating the wooden blinds shading her room. The loud crash that followed jerked Neha into a stunned trance, somewhere in between begrudging wakefulness and a lazy stupor. She sat up as a familiar sweet scent filled the room. Still slightly sleepy, she stumbled out of her bed and ran out to look into her terrace garden, and sure enough, it was raining. Monsoon had finally completed its pilgrimage and returned home. For Neha, home always felt more familiar in the monsoon. Be it playing barefoot in the wet grass or watching old movies nestled with her family in the living room sofa on a cold rainy day, monsoon always brought a warm fuzzy feeling with it. From her terrace, she saw that the newspaper was still lying on the driveway. She ran down the stairs, annoyed that the newspaperman kept lobbing the paper despite the very obvious box hanging on the gate. She rushed through the tiny bridge to her guestroom when she saw that her Appa had beat her to it. With a slight chuckle at her obvious disappointment, he called her to join him. As they skimmed through the sports section for the Arsenal match article, her Amma joined them with the morning coffee. She sat there with her parents sipping coffee and reading the newspaper when her ears picked up the faint ripple of a small stream, cascading through the multiple gardens, flowing into the tiny pool below the bridge. She took a deep breath; the warm fuzzy feeling sneaked into her heart. She felt she was in heaven… No, she corrected… She was home.

"Omana Thingal Kidaavo Nalla Komala Thaamara Poovo" The song came to Arushi’s lips as a trance came over her. The river around her was silent but for its gentle ripples, her humming, keeping pace with the lapping waves. It’s been so long since she had heard the song, even longer since she’d sung it. For her, the memories are still vivid. Her mom, with her long hair sitting in the courtyard of her ancestral home, a young Arushi in her arms. The soothing lullaby is sung, almost whispered, as she rocked Arushi to sleep. The images came flooding back to her as she sat in the small pod in the middle of the river. She was suddenly a child again as the river rocked her to sleep. She fell deeper and deeper into the trance. And in the growing haze before her, The river merged into her mother, its flowing mass melding into the dark curls of her hair, The swaying pod, the gentle arms of hers, and the lapping waves of her mother’s voice as it sang… "Omana Thingal Kidaavo...."

Designed to be a gathering space for women’s empowerment in Baghere, the building recognizes the community’s women and emphasizes their contributions. It establishes the building as a public space without departing from the comfort provided by private intimate spaces. The spaces in the center can be unified when required to make a single area. The design takes into account the local context and the climatic factors of the site. The shape of the building funnels the wind through every point. Major openings to the West take in the cooler monsoon and trade winds from the sea while blocking most of the dry winds from the East. The channeled Eastern winds move through the pool, which acts as a humidifier to cool the dry winds. Air circulation is directed along the building axis using the wall angles. The roof design leverages the prevalent wind patterns.

When one looks out across the white plane, the lone structure stands out. It protrudes out into the frozen lake, almost like a heron waiting patiently for its meal to swim home. A small pool is fitted into its deck where the boy would swim when spring comes, but today it’s frozen solid, Its icy depths inhabited only by the most hardened of gilled beasts. Traversing the distance, one reaches the house. On opening the door, the single aperture in the blank wall, he is welcomed by a slanting bridge, made of toughened glass, apparently, that when lowered connects the icy deck to the warm interior of the house. When closed; it still lets natural light into the entryway while briefly showing the frozen tundra outside.

Beside the door/bridge are stairs slanting… leading up to the living space. The cupboard along the stairs indicates that it could serve as the space for sitting and reading a book or quiet contemplations if needed. Walking up the stairs, though, is the money shot. Flanked by the wall cupboard and the wall is a spectacular view of the icy dreamworld outside. The guy who lived here must have the best morning views anywhere, he thinks. Next to the panoramic view are two seats and a coffee table right behind which is the bed. Looking through the cupboard, he finds a few pictures of the owner. Wait. He rubs his head. This somehow looks familiar.. one suddenly notices movement beside him.

Abhivi is literally translated as “the coming together of various parts to create a unified whole.”It perfectly describes the effort that went into this unorthodox documentation. This book is an amalgamation of the works of 46 students from different parts of the country. Through tumultuous video calls and conversations muddled in low bandwidths, seated in our tiny shacks miles away from each other, we have learned about 8 settlements, each in a new corner, with stark differences. From the interior, with 46 minds put in and the chaos from the contrast of 46 opinions, it was a herculean task. But when we took a step back and looked at our book as a whole, we found beauty in that chaos. And that beauty represents this book. We urge you to step back and look at the bigger picture, one that celebrates the differences.
