Windlasses Windlass and capstan selection chart

This chart serves as a basic guide to assist in selecting the appropriate anchor winch system for your boat.

Deck & hull

Please note: Size, displacement and type of vessel, as well as anchoring conditions, must be taken into consideration when selecting an anchor winch. Vessels of heavy displacement and/or high windage will require larger windlasses. All systems assume the use of a chain stopper, chain snubber or mooring cleat to remove the load when setting or breaking the anchor loose. The maximum pulling capacity of the windlass should not be less than three times the total wight of the ground tackle. Should you require any assistance or information, please contact Exalto Emirates.

This chart refers to anchor windlass selection only. When selecting a stern capstan for the same boat, Maxwell uses one size smaller drive, or down to a minimum of 50% of the pull rating of the windlass (unless specified otherwise).

Chain swivel The use of a swivel and joining shackles to join your anchor and rode will greatly improve anchor retrieval and help ensure that the rode lays neatly into your anchor locker. Thus, they are highly recommended for use with Maxwell’s automatic rope/chain series windlasses. Two sizes (6mm - 8 mm/1/4” – 5/16” and 10 mm - 12 mm/3/8” – 1/2”) are available to suit vessels up to 20 metres (65 feet). These robust single swivel anchor connectors, with captured pins, will not loosen under load and pull smoothly and easily over bow rollers.

Capstans The mooring line requirements for a yacht can be determined from the classification rules; the requirements being stated in terms of breaking strength. The strength of the chosen material for line will then determine the rope diameter. Diameter of mooring line: At least three wraps of mooring line around the capstan are required to ensure adequate grip. The capstan must be tall enough to allow for this, and the wraps would appear as four rope layers above the point of rope entry. The most effective way of increasing grip between the capstan and the rope for high load applications is to apply more wraps around the capstan, but no more than five wraps are ever required.

Ropes You can attach the boat to the anchor with rope, chain, or a combination of the two. Rope is the overwhelming favorite, usually with a length of chain at the anchor end. Use nylon rope only. Synthetic ropes are strong, light, easy to handle, and elastic, the latter a most desirable characteristic in an anchor rode. Where the anchor line will be fed through a deck pipe for stowage, the added flexibility of braided synthetic rope can make it a better choice.

Deck & hull

Determining how long your anchor rode should be is as simple as multiplying the deepest water you expect to anchor in by 3. As for rope size, the rule of thumb is 1⁄8” of rope diameter for every 9’ of boat length. So if you expect to anchor your 26’ boat in 30’ of water, you need 240’ of 3 ⁄8” nylon rope. Unlike oversizing the anchor, oversizing the line is not recommended because that reduces its beneficial elasticity. As a practical matter, however, rope with a diameter smaller than 3⁄8” is difficult to grip. In an emergency the line can be tied to the chain or the anchor using an anchor bend, but for regular use give the end of the line an eye splice around a thimble, and shackle the line to the chain.

Chain stoppers Chain stoppers hold the chain and take the load off the windlass. They are used to set and ride on the anchor, break free the anchor or to prevent accidental ‘free fall’ of the anchor while underway. Also recommended for VW Series rope and chain systems to hold the chain while changing over from rope to chain. Three sizes available – refer chart below.

Deck & hull

Vetus shaft anodes are designed to create a perfect fit on the shaft. Even as the anode is eroded, it cannot come loose. An interlock system is incorporated in both halves, to ensure that the bolt holes are in perfect alignment. The material around the holes is also increased to prevent the bolts becoming loose. Shaft anodes are not recommended on high speed vessels. They create turbulence in the water flow around the propeller and as they erode, can cause imbalance in the propeller shaft. These problems do not occur when using the Vetus propeller nut with integrated zinc anode. On a project basis, shaft anodes are supplied with a metal bracket.

Stairs Besenzoni ladders are all manufactured using high quality materials such as stainless steel, Carbon Fibre and teak making them extremely durable and reliable. Many different configurations are also available from manual drop in models to fully automated concealed hydraulic letterbox models which can rotate once extended, the choice is extensive. For larger yachts both fixed and rotating ladders have the option of self adjusting steps to optimise safety whilst boarding and proximity sensors can be fitted to let the captain know if the ladder is deployed.

Rubbing strakes All Vetus rubbing strakes, have a black base profile, for fastening to the boat by means of bolts or screws. Type HARO, TRAP and POLY are also available with a white (RAL 9003) base profile. The inlay strips may be supplied in the colours wine-red (RAL3004), cobalt-blue (RAL5013), light grey (RAL7035) black or stainless steel (AISI316). The inlay strips can be replaced easily. All Vetus rubbing strakes are available in lengths of 20 or 30 meters.

Based on any template or CAD outline drawing of the deck (parts) the company are able to generate deck designs, either traditional or free styled. After approval of the design by the principal/OEM the CNC milling process starts. The milling process enables the company to manufacture more or less unlimited deck sizes.
