Case study: Portsmouth International Port

New Year, New Name, New Brand

Navigate started 2011 by giving Portsmouth International Port, one of its key clients, a new website and a new brand, which were revealed to the world in mid-January. Last year cruise and ferry customers have departed from and arrived at “Portsmouth International Port” [instead of the “Continental Ferry Port” as before]. The new name reflects the increasingly important role Portsmouth plays on the international shipping stage. Dredging work (begun in January 2011) will allow larger ships to arrive and depart at different states of tide. This is good for a new generation of ferries and cruise ships, and makes Portsmouth the first European port-of-call for heavily laden cargo ships. Taking the sea as its inspiration the Port’s new logo is both contemporary and easily recognizable. The nautical theme is present in the colour and design of the wave. The new website featured stylish design and functionality. Both the logo and the new brand can be seen on the Port’s new website: www.portsmouth-port.co.uk To explore how to create your new brand, identity or new website, contact Julie Blackwell, 01730 235666

Cruise expo at the Port When the Port staged the first ever Cruise Expo in the city in July, they called on Navigate to help facilitate the inaugural event.

Billboard In autumn 2011 a vast brand billboard, designed and produced by the Navigate team, was erected to greet people at the entrance to the Port.

PR services | Case study: Portsmouth International Port

Official launch Navigate played a key role in organizing the official opening of Portsmouth International Port’s new passenger terminal by Dr Vince Cable MP, Secretary of State for Business, Innovation and Skills, on the morning of 13 May.

Steve Tuckwell, Brittany Ferries (left) and Martin Putman, Manager of the Portsmouth International Port (right) with early arrivals to the new terminal

New terminal opens Navigate led the PR, marketing and branding for the opening of the new terminal at Portsmouth International Port, which saw its first passengers on site in the early hours of 1 April. Gareth Gammon, Emma Gaisford and Sarah Simmons from Navigate were at the Port by 5.30am in good time to witness the departure and arrival of the first passengers at the new terminal. The new terminal building, which offers the modern high standards and style of an airport terminal, is part of a £16.5 million investment in improved passenger facilities at the Port. Designed to include the latest eco friendly technologies, the new terminal is the first of its kind in the country to be heated and cooled by thermal energy from the sea.

Gareth Gammon, MD of Navigate, said later: “This was both a great day for Portsmouth International Port and a great day for the Navigate team. We have created and planned this event for the Port for six months and the whole team worked creatively and effectively. “Navigate came up with the idea of inviting all the mayors from the European ferry ports which are served from Portsmouth. We organized the day, and the opening event went without a hitch from start to finish. I was very proud of our part in this event.” Emma Gaisford, Navigate’s PR Director, added: “Big opening events like this are always a challenge, but we overcame all the potential hazards.” For further information on organizing major events, contact Navigate, 01730 235666: Gareth Gammon gareth.gammon@navigate-design.com or Emma Gaisford, emma.gaisford@navigate-design.com

Navigate organized extensive press coverage from BBC TV’s South Today, ITV’s Meridian, and local papers such as The News. The Studio had already provided the smart modern branding which adorns the terminal.

Having joined Navigate to support the Public Relations and Digital Directors, Julie promotes the Port services, especially in the growing cruise market.

Emma says: “The Port is a great client to work for. They have a clear idea of what they want, and they give us responsibility for carrying out their needs” This means:

Julie maintains and updates the Port website, working directly with the client. She gets involved with the briefs and handling client enquiries on web content and updates.

• regular press releases for the national and trade media; • discussing and recommending a PR strategy; • digging out news stories in the press where there is an angle to promote the work of the Port; • risk management if there are any crises, large or small.

With more than 30 years experience in the promotional/ incentive and travel trade, including Carlson Marketing, Kuoni Travel, Champneys and IBM, Julie has worked in London as well as in Hampshire. Her lifetime skills and experience have proved a valuable addition to the Navigate team.

“We are in the middle of our second year of our three-year contract, and throughout the Port has praised Navigate for the efficiency and thoroughness of our work.”

Seatrade Hamburg highlights Hamburg was the autumn venue for Navigate’s team at Seatrade Europe. Hamburg is the meeting place for highlevel figures in the North European cruise, ferry and river cruise industries. It ran for three days at the end of September. In support of Portsmouth International Port this was a good opportunity for Navigate to meet with key partners such as the PSA (Passenger Shipping Association) as well as industry executives and the media. Compiling a new targeted press pack for the Port was just one of the services which Navigate provided. Navigate also undertook dedicated communications before and after the event. Graphics panels for information and display purposes were also installed. “Meeting media contacts and clients face to face is ideal at an exhibition, especially at an international event like Hamburg when supporting the client on the stand,” Gareth Gammon explains. “It is a common feature of communications programmes.” To discuss your PR and promotional needs, contact Julie Blackwell, Navigate’s PR/Marketing Support Executive at: Julie.blackwell@navigate-design.com 01730 235666

PROFILE Navigate has the experience to represent many elements of the communication process for overseas Tourist Boards and Convention Bureaux, giving them access to the UK market through PR/digital marketing, copywriting and event management. Navigate also delivers attractive visual exhibition stands – we designed the Indonesia stand in 2010. Visiting WTM gave us the opportunity to offer our skills and discuss the way forward with many potential clients. Navigate can create for all levels of budget. With our experience working with Portsmouth International Port, we are ideally positioned to offer the dedicated marketing functions in the maritime and cruise areas.

Gareth Gammon Gareth Gammon, Navigate’s MD, has a wealth of marketing and communication experience in the maritime and cruise publishing industry. Gareth and Navigate have a history of successful sales and marketing within the cruise sector, and counts The Passenger Shipping Association and its members among their key clients and contacts. In December 2011 Gareth, Emma and Julie attended the prestigious PSA Ball at London’s Dorchester Hotel. Navigate and Gareth have attended major cruise trade shows in Europe and USA, networking events and conferences. 7059 Everest

Cruise control In 2011, The Passenger Shipping Association (PSA) turned to Navigate for help with their annual report. The PSA is the trade body representing the UK’s leading cruise and ferry brands. For over 10 years, Navigate have worked closely with Bill Gibbons and his team at the PSA on numerous projects. We have help increase the exposure of the passenger shipping industry to the media and potential passengers. Navigate helped with the design concepts, artwork, proofing and the print of the 28-page annual report, which showed the PSA and the Association of Cruise Experts (ACE) to be in good health. The annual report was a key tool at the AGM held at the Chamber of Shipping, Carthusian Street, London. The media used it in writing their reports for consumers in national and trade titles. Cruising represents a fast-growing market, accounting for 11 per cent of UK holidays and 4.5 per cent of all travel. The PSA now has 42 members. In December, Gareth, Emma Gaisford and Julie Blackwell attended the PSA’s black tie dinner at the Grosvenor House Hotel, maintaining Navigate’s close ties with the cruising industry. For the best advice on designing and producing your annual report, contact the Navigate Studio, 01730 235666

Miami cruising Cruise Miami, which happens every March, is the world’s biggest conference and exhibition for the cruise trade. Navigate used this event to promote Portsmouth International Port as a major destination for international cruise ships. Cruise Review included editorial about Portsmouth, the International Port, and the cruising industry with colourful advertisements showing Portsmouth at its best. Celebrations Gareth Gammon at the South Downs National Park official opening

The official opening of the South Downs National Park in Petersfield Square on Friday 1 April brought high-profile coverage in the national media. “Certainly the quality and vibrancy of the exhibitors and demonstrators was fabulous – really showing the activities on the Downs to be varied and appealing for all.

Mass coverage on national media

The event was featured on: BBC national breakfast TV and South Today TV; Daybreak on ITV; The Daily Telegraph and The Guardian: Kestrel Radio, Heart FM Sussex, and Radio Solent; local newspapers – The Herald, the Petersfield Post, The News (Portsmouth), Life in Pertersfield; and numerous online, trade and activity press.

Margaret Paren, chair of the South Downs National Park Authority leads local children acorss a giant map of the new park

Celebrations started with singing in the Square by pupils from Petersfield Infant School. The Chair of the South Downs National Park Authority, Margaret Paren, rang a handbell to send a peal of bells across the Downs. Then she played pied piper – leading a procession of children through a kissing gate, and onto a giant map of the South Downs which filled one quarter of Petersfield Square.

Thanks to the work of Gareth Gammon and the Navigate team, there were shining, happy faces all around in the 1,000-strong crowd at the official launch of the South Downs National Park Authority (SDNPA). Joint organizer Gareth said: “We achieved some excellent media coverage, which was central to the aims of the day. “From an initial concept and planning meeting on 1 February, to produce an event in just eight weeks later was a big ask. But with the help of the Navigate team and fellow organizer Philip Haines, Lucy Soal (East Hampshire District Council), Petersfield Tomorrow, the SDNPA, and the First Friday attendees, among others, we believe the day was successful for all.” Some 29 exhibition stands included canoeists, cyclists, environmentalists, farmers, foodies, hang-gliders, ramblers, shepherds, a stately home (Petworth), a traditional gypsy caravan, volunteers, walkers, wildlifers, a yurt, and zorbers.

Marketing Milk

Since launching in 2005 ADF Milking has fast become a global leader in dairy parlour hygiene. ADF’s revolutionary automatic dipping and flushing system helps save farmers time and money when milking cows, and ensures vital work is performed consistently at exactly the right time. This makes for a healthier herd, better quality milk, and brings the potential for more profit. With business growing quickly around the world, ADF asked Navigate to help with a complete marketing and communications service. In 2011 Navigate undertook extensive research of ADF customers to help develop a targeted marketing approach. The initial result of this has been the launch of a quarterly newsletter, Milking Mattrers detailing business successes and developments. Aimed at present and future customers, and the dealers who sell the system, Milking Matters uses dynamic design to illustrate how this fast-moving company is winning contracts and awards around the world. It also helps explain new deals and financing options to farmers. A key development for ADF has been a pro-active use of public relations. Navigate has written and distributed press releases to key targeted media and other influential organizations. With the company gaining credit for its product in markets as far away as New Zealand there has been plenty to say. Closer to home, Navigate advised ADF on its approach at the National Dairy Event in August. Members of the Navigate team were on hand to meet customers, dealers and the press at this premier show for farmers involved with milk production.

Perspective on the prospectus The Navigate design team has worked with Peter Symonds College in Winchester for many years. The summer is always a busy time for the sixth form college as it prepares for a new academic year with the production of a series of publications and documents. The lynchpin of this effort is the new prospectus. For 2012 Navigate has created a fresh look for the College’s prospectus – 72 pages in full colour with information about the college, its students, teachers, and a comprehensive course directory. The look and design of the prospectus is then applied across the range of supporting materials for 2011/12. These include:• A programme and invitations for an open day • An Ofsted Report leaflet • Application forms • A leaflet and handbook for boarders • Pop-up graphics for display stand graphics. Senior designer Neil Pafford says: “Peter Symonds always provides a great range of interesting challenges. Our job is to keep the college’s material looking fresh – appealing to both potential students and their parents, while meeting the needs of the head, the staff and the governors. We also have to keep in mind the college’s clear corporate guidelines.”

Burnished in bronze Bosworth Community College is a successful college in Leicestershire and appointed Navigate to produce their brochure and prospectus. The college wanted new and improved documents, supplying fresh photos and leaving the Navigate Studio to upgrade the designs. The resulting bright and colourful brochure and prospectus – burnished in bronze – appealed to parents and potential students alike.

The school has approved a new logo showing the full school name, The Petersfield School, with the use of the South Downs inspired motif and the Hampshire rose. This design firmly places the new academy within its local area. Navigate have created a detailed project brief for the Academy’s new website. This covers the design, structure, content and schedule. It breaks down the website into a page-by-page plan, drawing reference to specific modules as part of the content management system (CMS). The site went live in early September 2011.

The Petersfield School has rebranded and transferred to an Academy with the help of Navigate. This includes a new logo, revised website, 16-page prospectus, stationery and signage.

Case study: The People’s Pledge

Making a marque

Of the people, by the people Navigate has worked closely with the People’s Pledge, the nationwide campaign for a UK referendum on the EU, since the autumn when we were appointed. Navigate helped to establish the identity, branding and public position of the People’s Pledge in the run-up to their major congress in London in October.

Zac Goldsmith MP being interviewed at the People’s Pledge congress

“We are very excited for Navigate to get involved in such a major national campaign which is important for everyone in the UK,” said Gareth. “We are a non-political business and the People’s Pledge is a cross-party organization representing a wide range of views and interests on Britain and the EU. Navigate created a new logo, branding and literature, including stationery & compliments slips, business cards, a car sticker, a donation form, branded envelopes, publicity leaflets. We completely revamped their website, which was launched in time for the Congress. The Congress in the Grand Hall, Westminster Methodist Central Hall, Westminster, was a big success. Navigate helped the People’s Pledge to prepare for the Congress, and supported them at the event. Gareth Gammon, MD of Navigate, and Senior Designer Neil Pafford were among the 1,800 delegates at the Congress to hear discussions on the Eurozone Crisis and Britain’s membership of the EU. Neil and Navigate created a range of literature for the event including: a 4-page insert in The Spectator magazine, tickets, a carrier bag, banner pull-ups, and a programme.

“It was great to see Navigate’s designs and branding in place for this event, which was covered in the national media. The client thoroughly appreciated our timely and targeted work.” The Congress featured panel discussions and debates, and more than 20 keynote speakers, such as Conservative MPs Zac Goldsmith, Priti Patel, Douglas Carswell, Dominic Raab and Steve Baker; Labour MPs Kate Hoey, John Cryer and Graham Stringer. The People’s Pledge has been created to give people a voice, forcing an open debate on Britain’s membership of the EU and leading to a referendum. Its membership includes MPs from all parties, MEPs, economists, trade unionists, academics, journalists and people with a broad spectrum of opinions on the EU – some for, others against.
