I am Navin, an optimist, an enthusiast and a firm believer in God. I don’t believe in the concept of fate because I have always been motivated by the idea that we are responsible for all the outcomes in our life, be it good or bad. Through my years of experience as a student I have always found that there is no shortcut to success and hard work is the only key. Architecture happened to me as an accident when I wanted to choose my undergraduate degree. Honestly, I had no clue as to what the course in itself had for me. But as soon as I started learning about Architecture I was very much impressed by the impact that built spaces have on each and every one of us. So, this idea has always been a key element in all of my projects. The user experience is the most important aspect in any design. So I have always designed keeping this in mind. We never get to choose a name for ourselves. We are given a name either by our parents or our dearest one’s. Living to fulfill the meaning of my name has always motivated me. To the best of my knowledge I have lived by my name and I am happy to continue living by my name henceforth. The main intent of this topic is to study, architecture’s influence on one’s emotions. So architectural spaces that contained pre-determined emotions had to be analyzed. The attempt is to study the spatial-cultural characteristics pertaining to cremation grounds, in the Indian city of Varanasi and investigating the problems that arise due to cremation grounds in the city and providing sustainable & innovative architectural solutions to the same. The attempt is to provide clarity while designing meaningful spaces. Moreover the design focuses on using architectural spaces as a medium for consolation for the bereaved. The design also analyses the true problems that exist due to the high volume of cremation at Varanasi and provides a new ghat system that will act as sustainable answer to the problems as well as a learning platform to the visitors. DEATH @ VARANASI Hindus believe that dying along the banks of the Ganges in Varanasi will release you from the cycle of rebirth. If you have money, you can be ceremoniously cremated and released into the water. For the vast majority of the poor, however, their bodies are floated into the Ganges, exposed to the elements. While many make the pilgrimage to Varanasi in order to die there, they arrive without the resources to live. However, the belief is so powerful that those who cannot afford to wait for death will simply jump into the water or commit suicide. The bodies intended for cremation are carried down these gallis having shops ,stores and houses by the family of the deceased everyday of the year. The main temples of these ghats are accessible through these gallis. Most of the cremations happen at night , and with two to three hundred cremations every day , there isn’t a moment when this galli is not in use. According to the myths ,the deceased are dipped in this holy river to wash their sins away before they are cremated. Ganga is the central focus and the lifeline for the people of Varanasi.

This picture was shot during the month of September which is genrally the winter start @ Varanasi. The heat waves are so intense that the all the doms have 2nd degree heat burns in their body.

Since cremation is the main functioning of these ghats the ashes, the material used for cremation process, the bamboo stretcher that is used to carry the body etc are left on the shore. This makes the entire place extremely unclean.

There are no seperate spaces to keep the dead after they are dipped into the Ganga. The bodies are left to dry on the steps of the ghats where it is already dirty while the livestock there make the situation even worse.

To witness a cremation is an absolute chaos at Varanasi. Due to lack of gathering spaces people stand in the places that are available sometimes not even able to winess the cremation of their loved one.

80 dead bodies surfaced at a village named UNNAO, after water receded near Pariyar Ghat, During preliminary investigation, local residents informed that instead of cremating the bodies of unmarried girls they are set adrift in the Ganga river.

At the start of every monsoon the water levels in the ganga rises upto 65m. The danger level varanasi is 71.2m. The highest flood was recorded in 1978 when the floods rose upto 73.3 m engulfing many farm lands and lives of people.

Due to lack of administration the people dump dead bodies , dead animals without proper permission.

DEFORESTATION Nearly 3 lakh tonnes of wood is burned each year at varanasi. A greener cremation system would be the need of the hour which would reduce deforestation as well as air pollution.

The eastern ghats of varanasi has been uninhabited for thousands of years. It is a clear contrast to the opposite shore. The western shore of ganga has been inhabited for many thousands of years. The main reason for this is because most of the rituals done along the varanasi ghats face east . So the western ghats have always been occupied. The site chosen on the eastern ghat is based on the distance from Manikarnika ghat to Harish chandra ghat. ( The two Main cremation ghats at Varanasi). The proposed site will be the newer development of the ghat. So the ganga is the only link between the past and the future.

WATER SECTION BASED ON BOD LEVEL An in depth analysis of the water purity levels at different ghats has helped in formulating the above section. The inference of the study is that, there is a high BOD level at the mid portion of the river while the edges are comparatively lesser polluted. The shore of the eastern ghats are the least polluted.

Varanasi is a city that has constantly transformed over thousands of years to what it is today. Even today the transformation is very evident in the use of spaces. The Monsoon and floods play a major role in the transformation process. So the architecture should also reflect on this character. Spaces of temporary stay and permanant stay are identified.

Only people right on their death-bed are allowed to check in and stay till they die. People who are on their death-bed can check-in to Mukti Bhavan and stay there for 2 weeks. However, if the person does not die within 2 weeks, he/she has to leave Mukti Bhavan.

BIO- HAVEN FLOATING PADS Constructed of durable, non-toxic post-consumer plastics and vegetated with native plants, BioHaven islands float on top of the water, providing a beautiful habitat for birds and animals. Microbes are responsible for breaking down nutrients and other water-borne pollutants, but to be effective, they need a surface to stick to. The floating island matrix, with its dense fibers and porous texture, is the perfect surface area for growing large amounts of microbes (in the form of biofilm) in a short time.Organic solids stick to the biofilms and become the base of the freshwater food web.

MOKSHDA CREMATION SYSTEMS The basic design of the system works on the principle that the amount of air in it is controlled and wastage of heat is restricted, hence requiring 150 kg of wood as against the 400 kg required in the conventional system. The entire procedure just takes two hours. It will also act as a deterrent for the poor who because of the lack of sufficient wood dispose of partially burned bodies or even whole corpses in rivers.

VARANASI LIFESTYLE Varanasi is counted among holiest cities of India. It is often referred as mini India as people from many religions and cultural background, lives in Varanasi. Benares is a sacred place for Hindus, Buddhists, Muslims, Jains etc due to which we can find different communities residing in this city with harmony. Here people are more religious and attached with religious and cultural values. Social and economic setup of city is such that all these religions are inter-linked and inter-dependent on each other which creates a good social bonding in between them. It can easily be understood with an example that as Varanasi is a popular sacred destination, tourists from all over the world visits Benares and Sarnath As Varanasi and Sarnath are holy sites for Hindus, Buddhists, Jains so most of the prominent buyers, in form of tourists are from these communities. It shows the clear interwoven connection and inter-dependence between these communities that confirms the social and economic bonding of Varanasi people.

The usable site after CRZ regulations. In order to design this site a set back of 50m has to be left from the shore, while the other 50m is achieved by the steps of the development. Thus the regulation of a 100m setback is achieved. The 50m set back can be used for organising turtle walks, as well as acts as a platform for turtles to lay their eggs.

Division of the site into 9 hamlets thus and programming them according to the needs of the site. The main idea of the arrangement of programs is in such a way that the user is brought to a state of calm when he traverses accross the site.

Creating connectivity to the site through bridges which take the shape of a Trisool which is Siva’s Chief weapon. The site can be accessed either by the bridges or the ferris.

The landscape concept is crucial in this design because one of the main drawbacks of the ghats is the lack of landscape. The idea is help the user feel the transformation of landscape from one space to another. The landscape becomes dry as it reaches the cremation areas and the architecture alone stands out in those spaces

CREMATORIUM FLOOR PLAN @ 83M LVL The Crematoriums are located at both the ends of the site. The processional path is the main element of the design. Emphasis on scale is used to create a feeling of inferiority in the user. More over rhythm is used to create order which helps in relaxing the mind.

The gathering zone is inspired from the streets ( Gallis ) of Varanasi. The Gallis of varanasi are very narrow and they are abutted by high walls of houses or palaces on both sides. This is the main reason why the gallis are dark during the day which promote anti social activities. The Gathering hall is designed on similar lines. The edges of these concrete installations act as seaters for the visitors to enjoy the river. As they cross these walls, the visitor starts feeling small because of the height of the walls. So the only way out is to reach the atrium on the inner part which has a water element acting as a metaphor for the Ganga. The gathering space acts as a transition between the learning center/ commercial hub and the crematorium.

COMMERCIAL ZONE The commercial zone can be used as a space for vernacular goods and artifacts. So the visitors also enjoy a shopping experience during the walk. 80 Shops and 10 restaurants can be accommodated in the commercial zone. The commercial zone also acts as a breathing space in the 1.5km stretch.

Both the parks are located adjacent to the Ganga pooja ghat because the main entry is connected to the ganga pooja ghat. So the parks act as social gathering spaces throughout the day. A Vertical flower landscape area demarcates the transition from the parks to the hospice. A small commercial hub is also located near the park for daily use.

HOSPICE

The hospices in Varanasi sees thousands of visitors every year. While there are more visitors in winters when more people die, the number of visitors decreases in summers. The priests at the residence help perform rituals and rites that help the dying depart from the Earth in peace. Only people right on their death-bed are allowed to check in and stay till they die. The hospice is located directly above the Ganga pooja ghat because :

1. It is easily accessible, 2. The visiitors are able to spend their final days on the edge of Ganga which helps them to find a peaceful death.

GANGA POOJA GHAT From ancient times the GANGA AARTHI has been done to show people’s gratitude to the Ganga. Everyday of the year this ritual is done during the mornings and in the evenings. A large crowd generally assembles to witness the ritual. This space becomes very lively on a daily basis.

The proposed development shall incorporate all the specified policies and programmes that are required but shall be specific to the vernacular context. As such the design will not only address the requirements of the modern age but shall encapsulate the core traditions of its birthplace. A Total of 1450 houses with variations such as 2bhk ,3bhk and 4bhk to accomodate various systems of society in a serene ecologically balanced enviroinment that is self sustaining in nature.


SmartCity Kochi is located approximately 12 kilometres (7 mi) from downtown Kochi and 22 kilometres (14 mi) from the Cochin International Airport. It is located in Kakkanad, which is the Ernakulam district headquarters. The project is coming up next to InfoPark, One of the IT Parks in Kerala. The presence of InfoPark, SmartCity, KINFRA Park, etc., makes the region of Kakkanad a very important center for IT/ITES in the state of Kerala. It is evident that the policies adopted in the existing PAVED : 22% developments clearly favour a larger building footprint to more OPENSPACES : 11% green spaces and incorporation of nature, the proposal shall be an inception to the reversal of this HIGHLAND APARTMENTS policy wherein open spaces and given priority over built forms. The site and locality themselves resonate the sound of vertical development. With the catastrophic number of upcoming developments, the land crisis is clearly evident and as such UP seems like the only way to go. After having established that high rise is the clear choice, various opportunities unfold themselves upon us. Site comprises of 2 parts. The north western one for the convention centre and south eastern site for the smart residential neighbourhood. There is an axis road that envelops the entire periphery of the site hence offering multiple possibilities for entry and exit.

A linear axis has been defines perpendicular to the given road that divide the northern and southern parts of the site. Vehicular circulation has been limited within this axis to minimise their movement as well as to encourage pedestrian circulation.

The distinct commercial spaces have been linked to each other through passages which run throughout. On the upper floors they act as bridges that connect the various blocks to each other. This has been inspired from vernacular context of Kerala.

Vertical cores have been established on the 4 corners of each distinct form. These cores contain within them the vertical circulation and other services such as cable lines, telephone wires and also spaces to facilitate future technologies. The walls have been reinforced more than usual to incorporate solar panels, wind turbines as well as the above mentioned.

Each core facilitates vertical circulation to 2 houses per floor through a common lobby which cumulatively results in 4 cores per block for the vertical circulation of 8 houses per floor.

This form follows the existing shape of the site .

Based on the requirement, four floors ( 2 above ground and 2 below) have been dedicated exclusively for parking and another additional floor for commercial facilities such as super markets, clinics, day care centres, play school, ATM’s and apparel stores.

Adhering to the requirements for commercial spaces, the floor has been segmented into 4 distinct forms that promote wind flow through the site snd help in the creation of vistas and view points in and around the site .

A water body that envelopes the southern end of the structure has been introduced into the design to stay in context with the vernacular architecture, provide ambient lighting for the basement floors throughout the day and adding an aesthetic feature on site.

A dedicated service area has been allocated on the south-western corner of the site that adheres to sewage treatment, carpentry and various allied maintenance activities. The landscape has been developed on site so as to create the natural ambience of walking through a park with mounds on the northern end to create a rugged contour.

Each house incorporates a perforated screen, private corridor, habitable space and a common corridor that runs around the block with viewing decks. All of which is inspired from the vernacular context.

It is a structure containing a door forming part of Compound wall for the house with a tiled roof on top. It is the formal entry to the compound with the house.

It is the prime portico soon after steps to the house. Traditionally it has a slope tiled roof with pillars supporting roof. Sides are open.

Traditionally Nadumuttom or central open courtyard is the prime center the Nalukettu. There is an open area usually square shaped in the exact middle of the house dividing the house in its four sides. Due to this four side division of the house by having a Nadumuttom.

The main building for instance, is scientifically designed in such a way that it must face the rising sun. The room is called Kilakkina or eastern room and behind it one or more of the chambers is placed one another which is called the Chaypu or lean to forming an enclosed veranda room.

At the end of Chuttu verandah there used to be a small pond built with rubble on sides where lotus or Ambal used to be planted. The water bodies are maintained to synthesized energy flow inside

THE URBAN MOUNTAIN MOUNTAINS TAKE MILLIONS OF YEARS TO EVOLVE. DOES IT?

The natural process of mountains takes centuries or even millennia to form up. But since people got into the habit of polluting and dumping, these small habits grew up proportionately as the population and Urbanization grew, over years. And today, Chennai City houses some of the largest dump-yards in the country. One such dump-yard, which used to be a barren land, can be found at a towering scale in the vicinity of Ambattur, Chennai.


THE SCENARIO

THE NEIGHBOURHOOD AMBATTUR

The dumping of wastes in the site has created a huge volume of waste which sums up to nearly 1.7 lakh tonne vs. The dump pile occupies an area of nearly 2 acres in the present scenario.

Ambattur is a residential neighbourhood of Chennai. It was made part of the Chennai Corporation in 2011. Closer to Anna Nagar, Padi and Avadi, Ambattur is a fast developing residential locality and manufacturing hub of Chennai. It covers an area of 45 km². The growth was heightened after Ambattur industrial estate was established in 1964.

THE ISSUE The main issue of the site is clearing the huge volume of solid waste from the site.

THE SOLUTION

The Ambattur Industrial Estate, spread over an area of 1,430 acres (4.9 km²), houses about 1,800 units and is the biggest small scale industrial estate in South Asia. It was commissioned in the year 1964 by the Government of Tamil Nadu. Companies like Britannia, TI Cycles of India, Dunlop, and TVS have their plants in Ambattur.

- Seperation of plastic from the compost. - Disemmenation of the soil compost on the entire site - Recycling of plastic and using it for various uses.

Ambattur Industrial Estate has attracted a lot of IT companies due to its proximity to residential neighborhoods and the lower rentals. The lease rentals of IT Parks in Ambattur are half of those in the city. Information Technology (IT) companies such as MilesTs, HCL Technologies, Dell and Tata Consultancy Services have their development centres here. Out of the 22 facilities that HCL Technologies has in Chennai, six are in Ambattur.

AMBATTUR LAKE Ambattur lake, is a rain-fed reservoir which reaches top levels during the monsoon seasons. It also caters to the drinking water needs of the Chennai city after Poodi and Chembarambakkam Lake.Ambattur lake is one of a chain of three water bodies, including the Korattur aeri and the Madhavaram aeri, where surplus water from one is transported to another. THE SITE The Site is located at the conjunction of two important roads in Ambattur. The site has a commanding view over the ambattur lake which spans a vast area.

THE PROPOSAL

The growth of this neighborhood, which contributes a major amount of the users for the park, multiplied over the last decade as a result of the growth in the IT sector. Statistics show that at an average, the population increased by 3000 per year, showing more than 30000 people in the last decade.

The site currently posseses the character of a negative landmark. The aim of the design is to covert it into a positive landmark which will have an inbound effect on the entire social character of the deveoping area.

MASTER PLAN EVOLUTION 1. Dissemenating the waste mound to form contours

2. Planning of the Landscape as a response to the site conditions, giving rise to the Gathering Points.

LANDSCAPE CONCEPT The landscape concept is inspired from the heirarchy of plantation seen in a mountainous context which ranges from small shrubs at the valley to dense vegetation at the top of the mountain.

LIVE EXPERIENCE

During my post thesis period I got a wonderful oppurtunity to work on this interior design project. The client who is currently employed in Norway wanted a modern yet simple interior design where he could reside for the rest of his life once he comes back home. Though the client had a strict budget he wanted the most out it which was a really good challenge for me. This project is very close to my heart since this is my first live project and this is the one where I learnt that theoretical design is much different from practical design.


THEME The theme of the design was based on two colors- White and walnut wood. Since the floor tiles and room color was already finalised this theme was selected so that it would go along with the colour scheme of all the rooms.

GUEST BED ROOM The client required a reading room where he could keep all his books and enjoy his leisure time. Moreover this was the only room that could be seen from the exterior since it was in the front portion of the villa, so something stark had to be designed.

The overall design of the kid’s bedroom was designed for the daughters who would occupy the room in the future. Being able to look at a photograph many years down the road and realizing that you captured that one moment, that frozen moment in time when you captured that memory, is the best feeling alone. One thing I particularly love about photography is being able to capture something the way I see it. The angle, the lighting, or the position of the subject makes it unique and makes it yours. Giving it my own twist is what I thrive for in photography. I know that no one else will ever see it the exact same way I do. My interest in 3d visualization started when I was at my 1st year in college. Looking at the 3d images produced by my seniors had a huge impact on me. I have always been inspired towards 3d art right from my teenage and architecture has helped me explore it even more.

A photograph can capture the good times and the bad, and it can unveil both the positives and the negatives of life. A picture does say a millions words, and reveals all. Photographs write the most interesting stories without saying a single word, and yet can have a million different meanings to every individual.
