THE HISTORY OF THE LONE STAR TEXAS TOPAZ The lone star Texas topaz has a fairly interesting back-story. The rough design of the lone star cut was devised by Dr. Paul W. Worden Jr, a physicist from Stanford University in December 1973. He got acquainted with the basic tricks of faceting while visiting his brother Gary B. Worden, a science teacher and gem faceter, in Texas for the holidays. Inspired by the Texan Lone Star, he hand-crafted a fivepointed star in a synthetic golden sapphire. However, the resultant stone was excessively reflective, much to his discontent. In an attempt to improve the reflective surface, he re-designed the cut with the aid of computer software after returning to Stanford. He then sent this re-designed stone to his brother Gary, who fine-tuned the cut into a bright and distinct five-pointed star, which was visible perfectly even from a distance.

Following this, a cousin of the Worden brothers, Win Brown persuaded a Midland County commissioner, Tom Craddick, into adopting the lone star cut as the official state gemstone cut of Texas, which led to the publishing of House Concurrent Resolution #97, signed by Governor Dolph Briscoe in May 1977. The resolution cited the lone star cut as the official state gemstone cut of Texas and also mentioned the specifications for faceting the cut, thus making the design available to anyone who chose to use it.

WHAT MAKES THE LONE STAR TEXAS TOPAZ SPECIAL? •Any light that strikes on it is reflected back to the source. •The rest of the stone is designed to let light reflections escape, resulting in a clean-cut appearance of the star. •Because of the light reflecting properties, what the observer sees when he looks at the star is a reflection of his eyes.

HOW TO CHOOSE A GEMSTONE FOR THE LONE STAR CUT. •Pick a hard stone which has a hardness number of 8 and above on the Moh Scale. •Choose lighter colours, as darker gemstone colours like blue tourmaline have lesser brilliance and it takes a lot of light to see the design. •We recommend picking a bigger size, the minimum of which should be 6-7 mm, as the design is easier to cut and is more visible. •We are open to commissions of the lone star cut on roughs of various gemstones. We suggest picking a harder stone as it tends to hold the cut better, although a softer stone can be given the lone star cut by expert cutters such as ours.

ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT THE LONE STAR TOPAZ COLOR: Topaz as we all know comes in a number of vibrant colors with the golden orange yellow color or the imperial topaz being the most popular. However, when it comes to the lone star cut, there is a different spectrum of colors of topaz that are considered valuable, as they reflect this intricate cut more brilliantly. 1. White topaz: The original color of topaz is white which is then treated to create the various shades of blue that are particular to the lone star cut. The largest gem topaz deposits are in Brazil and Russia, followed closely by Mexico and the USA. In fact Texas, Colorado and Utah hold some of the finest deposits of the stone, as is evident by the fact that an entire cut is named after the state of Texas! 2. Sky blue topaz: The blue color of topaz is rare in nature. The white topaz is ideally treated for 3 to 4 weeks to produce this beautiful sky blue hue, which is extremely popular with younger patrons, looking for the lone star cut in lighter effervescent tones.

3. Swiss blue topaz: The most popular color in topaz, the swiss blue topaz is a striking color that is often considered similar to the cornflower blue of a blue sapphire. While it is popular, it is also considerably more expensive than the white or sky blue topaz as it takes 3-4 years of steady treatment to produce the perfect color. 4. London blue topaz: With the longest treatment time of over 5-6 years, the london blue topaz is a sublime color that is as expensive as it is beautiful. This darker hue is as popular as the swiss blue topaz in the lone star cut.

SHAPE: Most jewellery and gemstone connoisseurs agree that the round shape compliments the lone star cut the best as it makes the star the most easily visible. CUT: The cut of the lone star topaz is quite unique. Precise measurements of the angles of the pavilion (bottom part of a cut gemstone) and crown (top part) are required to give the lone star its characteristic appearance. The angles of the pavilion are designed in such a manner that any light that falls on it is reflected back to its source (corner reflection), while the rest of the facets let the light from other reflections escape. This combination of corner reflection and dull surrounding facets makes the star design appear more prominent and sparkly, and makes it distinctly visible from a distance. PRICE: Depending on the size, shape and carat, the price of a lone star topaz can vary largely. In our collection the price ranges from 4$ to 30$ a carat, depending on the color of the topaz, the size, the finish and more.

CONCLUSION The lone star texas topaz is one of the most beautiful and exquisite stones that can be made. Given the extreme effort and rarity of a well-cut stone, this makes for a perfect gemstone to commemorate special occasions like weddings, engagements, anniversaries and more. For jewelers, this is an absolute essential in your armamentarium as it is sure to catch your patrons’ eyes!
